How do you know when it is ready to be removed from the microwave? Does it glow like glass? How long does it need to glow for before you remove it? Just about to buy some clay but worried I'll ruin it by under firing it. Thank you
It is more important to check that the inside of the lid of your kiln is glowing instead of your piece. Once it is glowing you start timing your 5 minutes. Stop the microwave regularly (every 20 seconds) and lift the lid to release some of the heat. You don't want your piece to get too hot.
Hi Jayne. You can solder the jump ring closed if the finding on your chain is small enough to fit through the jump ring. The leaf is made darker in the veins by soaking in liver of sulphur and then polishing.

We used Art Clay Silver paste type. This is a real silver paste that you can use by itself or to glue silver clay pieces together or to add texture to silver pieces. This paste comes in a pottle that is already prepared for you.
Beautiful! Now after all that work what's the selling price? Thank you for inspiration. Was it after layer 14, completely dry, that you removed leaf mold? Do you have to keep checking the kiln after a few minutes in the microwave, or can you start with say 6 minutes?
You don't remove the leaf it will burn away while the piece is firing. Microwave on high for 2 minutes or so to get it to temperature. Once you get the kiln heated up to a glow then it needs to stay at that heat for 5-10 minutes. You don't want to let it get too hot so once it is up to temperature stop the microwave every 15 seconds and remove the lid to release some of the heat. I often go online and see how much others are charging for a similar item. There is no "correct price" for this.
The leaf pendant is gorgeous I would love to try this at home! Question: after you take the kiln out of the microwave can you take the silver pendant out and cool it in water or is it better to leave it in the kiln until it’s completely cooled down?
You don't need to leave silver in the kiln to cool it but I wouldn't recommend quenching it in water unless you want to anneal it (make it softer). I take my kiln out of the microwave and set the lid on a heatproof surface (the lid is the very hot) and let my piece cool on the base. It only takes a few minutes to cool.

My logic is the hole would already be there after firing. Are there any drawbacks or benefits to doing it like that? I'd love to make a pair of earrings using leaves from a mimosa vine! I could get very creative with tiny wildflowers. I'm sorry I'm full of questions. What size pack of silver art clay or pmc are you using and how many leaves can you make with one pack? Hi tammygurl64! The reason I didn't drill the hole before firing (which I usually like to do) was because the clay is so very fragile when you are making leaves, so I didn't want to take the risk. Always easier to drill a hole in dry unfired clay, than fired silver metal. I would recommend using a 10g bottle of paste for this project - you would make one leaf with this and have 3 - 4 grams left over to start the next one. Obviously if you used smaller leaves or tiny wildflowers it would make more pieces. Sounds like you are going to have lots of fun! Are you going to try firing them in the microwave?

Copper clay needs to be fired in an electric kiln, preferably in a stainless steel container under carbon.

I don't know, but I would assume a high speed drill with specific bits of some sort. Hopefully you'll get confirmation.

Teresa, it is just a small microwave kiln. Different brands include Glaze and Fuseworks - they are all made in the same place.

Is it safe to leave the kiln in the microwave while it cools?
It is probably safer to take it out. If you have a tempered glass turntable it might stress the glass.
