I think the comment section here is largely missing the point of what Josh meant by 'dangerous' on purpose. He wasn't contextually referring to GG Allin assaulting fans or Mayhem committing suicide/murder. I believe he was talking about the sound of the music, whereas so many bands just have this bland image and/or this super clean production. I sort of agree with RF (Don't know your name) and Josh. I like that RF brought up the fact that rock and country have merged. On a side note, I thought Code Orange was SO CLOSE to being massive, but they have seemingly spent a little too long in the shadows recently. Prior to the world shutting down they were on fire.

It's just largely not catchy enough while still having a real rock sound to become successful enough. You gotta have that perfect rock and pop balance. Too many rock artists either get too soft/pop or they're too up their own asses to make melodies a big enough part of their music.

Sadly, the way the music industry is, and the way the world is now, and how we consume music, we can never go back or get back, to how it was.
I’m 1000% confident that no new band (or any new artist really) will release an album in 2023, or in the future, that will still be talked about in 50 years time.
Regardless if you like the bands or now, there will never be another Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Kiss, Judas Priest etc etc. Just won’t happen.
It’s a reason why a lot of legacy bands are still out there doing stadium tours, when they are a long way past their prime. People still want that, but there’s no bands Is replace them.

Of course not they pioneered the sound they were the first to change the way rock sounded..it ran too far away from the roots and the older bands hate on the up and comers rather teaching then what they’re missing. But I agree it’ll never go back to the way it was. Ran so far away from the roots it’s just a bunch of cross over bullsh*t bologna..

I'm not as confident in trying to predict the future, assuming there will be no other great bands that could possibly be known 50 years from now. Things are pretty stale right now with the few exceptions that were mentioned in the video. Black Sabbath is a good example of influence. In an interview Rob Zombie said that all metal bands have basically ripped off Black Sabbath whether they are playing it slightly faster, slower backward, etc. I agree with him a lot of really great bands have come about because of the influence of Black Sabbath and other bands as well, but Sabbath and metal are my favorite. I'm hopeful that some bands will look back at the Great's and be influenced by them where you see the influence but it will be something original which will spawn a revival of sorts and start a fresh and new rock scene. I've also noticed when listening to interviews by great rock musicians that they state their influences which have been jazz, blues, punk rock, and classical music. If the up-and-coming bands/ musicians will allow themselves to be influenced by some of these same older influences from these older rock musicians I think they'll game perspective and the potential to create something magical. There is hope.

Danger in music has been done. Especially in rock and metal. And to take it a little bit further, it's been done by people who are still in the game. New artists could break their equipment on stage but people would say, they copied the who. They could try horror themed theatrics but people would say, they copied Alice Cooper. They could try embracing satanic imagery, but people would say they copied bands like Behemoth. And since The Who, Alice Cooper and Behemoth are still performing today, people still remember these antics because they only saw Behemoth last week. And maybe bands could get away with it if the old bands retired, faded into obscurity and then a new generation of fans who don't remember the old bands might see you copying other bands and think you are original. But when The Who are still performing well over 50 years later, these bands don't get a chance to copy such bands. So if you can't copy, you have to one up them. And how are you going to one up Ozzy who bit the heads of bats and Varg Vikernes who burnt down churches. I think most people are happy for new bands to not try and compete with that. Especially the youth who lets face it, are too sensitive to hear words they don't like, let alone see bands depicting violence or extreme imagery. I mean for god sake look at Roger Waters dressing as a dictator of a fictional fascist party and people complained that he was being racially insensitive. This is an act he's been doing for years and yet the further detached we get from WWII, the more people seem to think they should censor it. Rock cant afford to be dangerous when there are kids waiting to have them cancelled.

I think the biggest issue nowadays is that no one is catering to adults with anything anymore. So no one is making anything very serious because everyone knows that the biggest way to sell anything is to cater to what kids like. If you're not making something that looks or sounds addicting or colorful, you're gonna die out there no matter what you're doing. it’s very unfortunate, but thats just how it is now, which really sucks. I feel like the people born in the 1960's and part of the 1970's were the last generations to be "real", compared to the 80's onward born homogenized, sterile, whiney critics who expect perfection and political correctness. I miss the 80's and 90's when bands had attitude and their own "wavelength" that was unique to them and you could vibe with it or not, the choice was yours. Pro Tools and pop music took over and watered down rock. Guitar solos are gone. Drums are all sample replaced. Bands record themselves in their shitty home studios or with a "producer" who butchers their identity (if they even have one) instead of magical moments performed with sweat, blood and tears in real rooms with real instruments all mic'ed up. Rock has become neutered and transgenderfied. !!!FUCK!!! I seriously miss when music was ACTUALLY ALIVE and people could feel it! I haven't had cold chills, goosebumps, or tears from new music in too many years!! The dark ages have officially begun again on this planet!

I agree with him for the most part. I’ve said for years that a lot of singers sound the same or very similar, a lot of bands use the same snare samples, everything is over quantized and put on a grid and everybody uses the same patches in their Axe FX live or they run their guitars thru a 5150 or Dual Rectifier into a cab loaded with V30s. There are some REALLY good bands out there but they don’t get the airplay. I still love Tool, Sevendust, 10 Years, Periphery and Machinehead. Those guys just don’t get a lot of the exposure and consequently don’t get the top billing at the biggest festivals or get a lot of time on the biggest tours. The albums Sevendust have put out are amazing and they are the best live band I’ve seen yet they’re lucky to get 30-45 minute slots when they play out. The powers that be still push who they want and it’s a damn shame. It might not be as bad as it was before the 2000s but it’s still quite prevalent.

*_I get flamed every time I talk about this, so flame away. I don’t care anymore._*
*_When every record these days is recorded within one of four DAWs, uses the same digital amp modelers, maps drums to the grid and uses similar drum software… what do you expect? Every chance to suck the soul out of a recording, the musicians and producers take it. Every time I hear a modern rock song, all I’m trying to figure out is if what I’m hearing is actually being played by someone, or if it’s been programmed by a producer. Tom Petty records were recorded live in the studio. If one person messed up, they scrapped the take and did it again. Some songs took hundreds of takes to get right. There’s no one putting that much work into a recording these days. Literal blood, sweat and tears. These bands canceling shows because their laptops got lost at the airport is the dorkiest thing ever. How frickin’ nerdy is that? I watch bands like Spiritbox play live, and every single performance sounds exactly the same. That’s a problem! That’s where there is no “danger”. The genre has just become so fake and lifeless. It’s far worse now then it was in the eighties, but when Nirvana released Nevermind and opened up the floodgates for real sounding rock again, that’s when change happened. Bands started recording on tape again! LOL In all seriousness, it will take another Nevermind moment for the cultural shift to happen, but I have little faith it will. Too many people believe all the things I’ve mentioned above are not big deals and don’t think that’s the problem. Oh well. I’m right, you’re wrong. Keep enjoying telling people that rock isn’t dead and that you just need to look in the right place to find good bands and blah, blah, blah… 🤙_*

I think Josh Todd is spot on, and I think all the reasons there is none of these dangerous bands/front men is because many of the things you stated in the video. But all the reasons you stated in the video for why the exposure isn’t the same as it was back in the 80s and 90s is simply an excuse and all the more reason we NEED those dangerous bands/frontmen on stage, tv, online to breakthrough the mundane landscape and standout. Dangerous don’t mean necessarily doing the insane antics, but standing out from the humdrum bs that’s you don’t online where people are scared to take risks because they might be “canceled”. I think much of it is because people have gone soft due to worrying about such things. They don’t really matter. You can only “cancel” yourself.
I remember back in the early 2000s when I actually seen Josh Todd on tour with his solo project that went by his own name (probably for recognition purposes), my friends and I seen him take the stage at the Whiskey, and we commented this dude is probably like the last sort of old schools “rockstar” that there is. He’s the last of the sex, drugs, and rock and roll generation of bands, and I truly do believe that was the case.
Look, I don’t want to see people being strung out on drugs and alcohol, etc. but it’s all the glitz and glamour of those times that is severely missing from the presence of bands these days, and it reflects in the music. With so many bands playing it safe, and not wanting to ruffle feathers. It’s like it all died when Lynn Straight passed. I do truly think Snot was about to shake things back up, akin to what Pantera did back in the 90s. And no, I’m not saying Snot was on the same level as Pantera, but that they were bringing and energy and presence that would shake the ground. I truly believe that is the “dangerous” JT is talking about.
The music is simply so watered down, and safe.
As far as what you stayed about the small country rock bands selling out arenas, I’d die to the fact that it’s more accessible to women, and men alike. You think a dude don’t want to take a woman to a concert for a good memorable time that might get him “some” later? Of course he does. The chances are higher at that kind of show/concert/band.
Again I thing JT is right, and all the reasons you said in the video is the excuses why. Not that they’re not good reasons, because labels who will be willing to financially back a band to send them on tour and not face legal ramifications of risky behavior are few and far between, if not non-existent altogether.
But someone defiantly needs to break in through to the other side, if you know what I mean. 🤘🏿

I’ll never say that rock music is dead, but I agree with Josh to a certain degree. It just seems nowadays music in general has become stale and cookie cutter. Even the Buckcherry records (I love the first 2) sound like repeats of themselves. I blame the record labels for not allowing more bands more artistic freedom instead of cramming them into a prefabricated mold that appeals only to the lowest common denominator. I’m so glad I was a teenager in the mid 90’s; it seemed like every other day a friend would suggest a new band that was actually good and vice versa. It was hard to keep up, honestly. Maybe it’s because I’m older, but when people recommend new music to me now, 95% of the time I think it’s absolute garbage. More and more I find myself doing deep dives into groups from the 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s that I missed the bus on when I was younger. It’s rare that I find that breath of fresh air in new music, and I love all genres, excluding (c)rap. As long as it’s honest, I’ll listen to just about anything.

I feel old when I think about this but when I was a teen, I had a very limited budget for "entertainment". My main entertainment was music. Every once in a while, I would buy a CD, go back home, put it on and read the lyrics while I was lying in my bed listening to the whole album. I would read the special thanks and every single word printed in the CD booklet. Now, with the Internet, there's so much available like video games, movies, youtube videos, podcasts, music is no longer the only or the main form of entertainment, people no longer spend that much time listening to music, let alone to entire albums. We no longer spend our time, not only listening to the music but trying to find articles about our favorite bands in magazines, having the radio on, hoping to hear a song of our favorite band, watching MTV, hoping they'll play one of their videos, etc....that's why we no longer have these musicians that we used to worship when music had no competition.

Alot of Mainstream Rock music over the past 10 maybe even 15 years sucks, nothing i can remember is very memorable to me and ive loved all kinds of rock, punk, hardcore punk, death metal, industrial, alternative etc.Everything does sound too polished and nothing is setting anyone apart last good era i can remember when rock was good was the 90s and maybe early 2000s.People need to get back into supporting underground bands by buying physical albums from them.

First of all, this is great contact, I actually did not know that you also had a country channel. I happen to both love country and hard rock music, so I’ll definitely be checking that out. You’re definitely right about a lot of the newer well even older, Jason Aldean, Brantley Gilbert, those are some of my favorite country artist, why? Because they have a Lotta rock elements in their music. It’s bringing like the two best genres together. A couple of other things, I am a DJ so from a radio broadcasting point of view our radio station subscribe to music programs and we play whatever comes out on their programs, it’s very cut and dried. It’s very streamlined and it’s very specific. For example, if I wanted to play something off of the latest Skid Row album well I couldn’t do that because it doesn’t come in our digital package that we subscribe to. He is also right a lot of this stuff that I find myself playing on the rock side of things sounds the same that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, but a lot of it does sound the same and there’s not really a lot that stands out. I don’t think you have to go as far back as the 90s to find great bands, but the point is taken. And it’s interesting to distinguish between. Do we want to see the industry grow or do we want the industry to be more main stream. Because if it becomes more dangerous as he said, that isn’t necessarily going to make it more main stream in today’s society. Back in the day, whenever Nickelback and hinder we’re putting out songs like photograph, and Lips of an Angel. Most people in the rock industry were scarfing at it, but in reality I would argue. It was good for the genre. And we don’t really have anybody like that now. And about how people consume music yes, as someone who works in radio every day I can vouch for the fact that people don’t listen to radio much anymore. People discover music, however, they want to but there’s a Lotta great music out there that never gets the opportunity. w

I honestly think that why one artist is considered Country and another is considered Rock has to do with WHERE the given performer grew up. Today, Buck Owens would be considered Rock, simply because he’s from California. And, by the same token, the Outlaws would be considered Country. I mean, the Eagles WERE considered a Country group - their first three albums are definitely Country flavored, but on those same albums, they also had Rock tracks and Bluegrass tracks and the occasional R & B flavored track. The funny thing is, today…even Eric Clapton would be considered Country with a Rock feel. Bad Company might also fall into the Country field, too. This is going to sound weird, but we NEED another Ramones….The Who….even a new Nirvana….bands that WERE known strictly for Rocking out. Hopefully, this kinda makes sense.

I wonder if rock is a legacy music like jazz. It's interesting to think because we have absolutely NO CONTEXT for it right now but jazz was the most dangerous music on the planet when it was big and it was HUGE. As soon as recordings were being mass produced and sold on shellac the music that was being waxed wasn't classical, it was jazz! It sounded weak because the drums would bounce the lathe so they brought in a pair of sticks or maybe a wood block- or even a washboard but EVERYBODY was buying these crazy records with out-there heavily syncopated march beats and blues chord progressions played by musicians who had classical credentials. It was nuts!
The way you're describing this it sounds like we could be reaching a level of rigidity in terms of genres that was around when Elvis came in and just shattered anything and everything- all the boundaries. It was incredible when he shot to the top of what was it? The R & B, country, and pop charts all at the same time? That was confusion. They did not design the charts to be that way. And when Elvis was brought on stage at the Louisiana hayride they were calling his music a sort of folk music. They REALLY didn't know what he was going. White people thought he was black, black people thought he was white- what was in the charts was better produced and downright orchestral next to Elvis's spare 3 or 4 piece combos. Minds were being blown!

There just hasnt been any innovation in rock music. The coolest part of the history of rock has always been pushing the envelope. Started with Elvis Presley and has basically ended with Avenged Sevenfold. Maybe its time for a new british invasion? Seems like each time rock looks as if its about to die a British invasion comes in to save it. This happened in the 60s and the 80s. Technology has basically killed that possibilty of ever happening again. You basically have every song at your fingertips. If a pop or rap album has a lot of likes on social media then people are like cattle... everyone wants to like it too. Not many kids are in their bedrooms with a one box amp and the best gutair axe they can get there hands on experimenting anymore. Many find it boring and too much work. Thats whats killed rock. 1990s was the last decade that wasn't completely taken over with social media, the internet, and technology at your fingertips. Rock has suffered for it.

I went back and listen to a bunch of their songs and I still think it just sounds like country with a little distortion. The music still has a country twang to it and the singers still have that cpuntry draw in their voices. So matter how much I listened it still sounded just another modern country band which is not my taste. It will never be rock to me.

I know they're completely different kinds of bands but as far as touring and electricity at live show, it's gotta be them 2 for me, and coheed and Cambria also falls in that category for me..and as far as the future of rock music goes I think Ren might be the future 'it' guy, he wants no parts of a major label deal but this also brings in the genre issue because he makes more than just rock music. He also does rap music but God damn he can sing..

Rock music has never been ‘dangerous’ except perhaps in its infancy (1950’s) when it broke cultural restraints for teenagers. Quite frankly, the whole ‘dangerous’ thing is a stupid marketing ploy. What’s ‘dangerous’ about a musician? Nothing. Except perhaps misinformed idiocy. Bob Dylan, a folk artist, was far more subversive than GnR ever were. And I’m a fan of both.

I always picture country music as the old school 90’s stuff when I was growing up and then what I hear from my co workers sounds more like country pop hybrid. I feel country music is where rock artists go when their career isn’t happening and they want to cash in on a bigger audience. Like what you like and you do you. I just can’t get behind country music personally.

Country in the 90’s was pop country to me. I’m old school and true country music is artists like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rodgers, Don Gibson, etc. LeAnn Rimes & Shania Twain turned to country pop. Nowadays, Carrie Underwood covers GNR, which I kinda like. Country music evolves over the years. I know all the genres of music influence each other, but what I don’t like is that Dolly Parton is in the Rock-n-Roll HOF as well Willie Nelson and Missy Elliot. I don’t think they should be in the Rock Hall when I never once heard these artists played on a rock station. This country is getting too sensitive and we can’t hurt anyone’s feelings anymore, which, that’s life. I do think some of the younger generations are listening to classic rock though, which is great.
