    When I was gigging years ago, all I ever used was my 335 directly into a Music Man 2x10 65 and that was such a great sound. It is really good to see a demo on RUclips without effects pedals, just about every review or demo of guitars I see now, I have no idea what the guitar sounds like because of the array of pedals that everyone seems to use.
    Lovely tones by the way from both those instruments, just proves my theory that what really makes great tone is those long things on the end of your hand.

      Thank you Kevin, I enjoyed reading your comment 😀. You’re right, it’s nice to have just guitar into amp, even if it’s just now and again, to really force your hands to extract the tone. Cheers 👍

      Kevin. I agree. It's so nice to hear good guitar playing without an array of pedals. You can really hear the true character of the guitars. The pedals really do disguise the character of the guitars and amps

      335 into a music man 65 was my gig setup too

    • @darwinsaye

      After decades of playing and futzing with different overdrive pedals (and always being dissatisfied with how they suck tone) I finally figured that my holy grail setup would be my guitar straight into a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe, because I've seen how you can have that amp cranked and have a bright clean tone by having a light touch on the strings, but then just by hitting them harder, the mids bloom up into a thick drive. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to afford a Tweed Deluxe ANY time soon, but then unbelievably, I found a really cheap pedal, that's not an overdrive pedal, but is actually a Preamp/DI, that is voiced for Fender sounds, that *actually* does that dynamic Tweed thing incredibly well. It's a $50 Joyo that's an exact clone of the more expensive Tech 21 Blonde. It's pretty much the only drive that's ever on in front of my amp anymore (The amp is a '66 Princeton Amp - the non reverb model which stays clean all the way to ten).

    Hi Paul, great playing, but I really wanted to say that you are the best advocate for Cornell amps on RUclips. The Romany in particular is amazing. When we’re allowed out again I’m off to the local store for another demo. I’ve tried the ‘12’ with an SG Std and was blown away (specially with that EQ cut) so now need to take my own guitars in as well. However I think it’s a done deal. 👍🏻 Cheers.

      Thanks Kevin, very thoughtful of you to say 👍. It’s still my favourite amp. In fact, I’ve just posted a review of my new Vox AC30, and as good as that amp is, you’ll see I still concede in the vid that the Cornell is still my “go to” amp. Well, enjoy your amp shopping Kevin. If you do get the Cornell I doubt you’ll regret it 😀

      @paulstaffordcook8799  4 года назад

      Thank you Bruce! I’ve turned it up to nearly max, with no attenuation. At this point it would be great for overdriven blues tones and would compete with a drummer no problem. But it would no longer give you sparkly loud cleans.... it’s certainly no Fender Twin. So if overdriven blues is your thing then it would make a great gigging amp. However, if you mic’d it through the PA then you’d have all cleans too and it would be awesome. Cheers for watching 👍

    Such a difficult choice.... impossible really! Personally I prefer the Telecaster for the simplicity, the often fabulous neck profiles, the variety of tone & twang, and the whole mojo thing. But give me a chunky neck '58-59 ES 335 and I'd probably flip, because with most live music, I think 335s usually sound better than Telecasters, player talent aside.

    Always felt that a Tele with a 'bucker in the neck (a mini-humbucker in my case) was essentially the equal of an ES-335 as a 'do-everything' guitar. Great for 335 guys who have to do a good deal of traveling to various venues, maybe plug into the house's backline, a little less worry about getting knocked around a bit and packing into crowded spaces. Gig bag, and that's it.

    If you still have the Hudson broadcast, I can really recommend using the low cut to reign in a bit of the bass when you have the Romany in EQ cut mode. You can set the broadcast pretty neutral or as a slight clean boost and you should find it adds some clarity.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  4 года назад +1

      Good question. I kept them stock (250k). But, I’m noticing that my tone pot is always full up, giving me nowhere to go.... I kinda miss having my tone pot only half way, so that I can occasionally wind it up to max, and cut a few heads off. 🤣. So I will probably buy some Bare Knuckle 550k pots. I like the taper on the Bare Knuckles (audio not linear) and I think the 550k will give me back some extra cut. Cheers for watching 👍

I can do this free of charge via WhatsApp or Skype. So you can WhatsApp me on 078900 67773 and I’ll reply with a video. Or if you tell me your Skype Username, that would work too. But basically, the scale at 1:20 started with the diminished and then I ended it by just walking up the 4 chord (D). At 1:42 it was - well I don’t know the name of it, but it was very similar to major scale but using 1 fret separation (instead of 2 or 3) and then finishing that phrase with blues pentatonic played up in the BB King position. And 2:15 didn’t have a name, but simply walking up a bar chord (A) but always starting 1 fret before the normal note in the chord. And then finishing the phrase with just major scale, but mixing up the note order to create interest. Hope that helps 👍

    Paul, I have watched quite a few of your videos..and enjoyed them all -well done! There is a strange-mysterious-melodic spirt that you capture with such "primitive" equipment...that many Professional you-tubers, with much more advanced equipment could never. Your Tele has a unique sound to it (doesn't everyones on RUclips!) but I don't hear that strange (slightly unpleasant) qauckyness that everyone has gotten when you add a hum bucker to a tele (and play with both pickups engaged)... I even noticed Joe Bonamassas Tele has it... but yours does not... Your "middle setting" has something I've never herd - it combines the best of the two pickups -whereas a lot of the single coil / hum bucker set ups end up with this out of phase worst of both worlds sound (I have experienced it in my own tele -when I padded a PAF) -there must really be a great sweet spot for a under-wound Humbucker in a tele (like yours) -but Fender type and Filtertron is not even close to the Bare Knuckle you have) ... Honestly, your Tele sounds way better than the Joe Bonnamassa (bludgeon) and that is really something -well done! I guess the wiring might be inverted ? That when you have both pickups going they are "in phase" ? And how you get feedback over tones at such a low volume...and funny, you get it with every amp you have recorded -makes me think the room you record in is adding to your Brilliant tonal response ? finally, How is it, that your Tele sounds better in Blues-Jazz that the ES-335? You make it look like a battle between Thors Hammer vs excalibur - they both are great but the tele beats it with that unique character by leaps and bounds... it sings! having grown up in So Cal in the 1970s I have listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Yours sounds better than what Page came up with in LZ 1 AND..and this is the part that really blew me away: You have almost spot on captured Pages Tone from "Since Ive Been Loving you" ... that part where he has that "heated solo" tone -that sends chills up your spine. There are few musicians that can imbue such emotional melody into driven sonic expressions that don't turn out over played -over compressed or muddy ... Your sound : "sounds simply beautiful" (and many musicians know, that when you have a sound like that - it was anything but easy to put the right player into the right instrument, and mold the right instrument into its best acoustic arena) and that is real genius. Thank You ! -you are a real inspiration.

      Paul Stafford Cook Thanks for the reply! I checked out your standard vs. quarter pounder comparisons, the Seymour Duncan was a clear improvement!

    I’m a taller guy who lifts and also fronts our band - the 335 is just way more proportionate.

    You seem to enjoy rocking the tele more. Love both tones though.

      Thanks Philip, that interesting you picked up on that. Yes, the 335 is a little cumbersome in comparison with the Tele 🤣

      Hi Steve. Great, happy to help. My day job (driving instructor) won’t start again for at least another month, so I have the time available 😀. Feel free to email me at paul_ursusarctos@hotmail.co.uk and we can fine tune the date / time. On a general note, I’m happy to be available from 10:30am to 20:00 (uk time) most days. We can work on whatever you like, or if there’s a particular thing I did in one of my videos that you’d like help with, that’s fine too. Or if it’s just some tools and tricks to get you out of a rut, then all good. Cheers Steve 👍

    Paul stick with the tele with that amp, it gels terrifically, I'm not keen on the Gibson with that amp at all, sounds too Larry Carlton and fat for my ears.

      Thanks John, it’s interesting that you picked up on the effortless-ness of the Tele..., you’re right, it’s just so comfy and light and the neck fits my hand just perfectly. Cheers for watching 👍😀

    Such a shame using a gibson 335 for pentatonic blues.

      Not sure how to reply to this.... I’m a bit baffled. Surely you joke? The ES-335 is an amazing blues guitar.
