- In this retro review, Dan takes a look at the Bachmann Spectrum Norfolk & Western Class "J" 4-8-4 locomotive he purchased in 2016.
A retro review is a product review of a model that is not a recent release, and may be out of production. Examples can often be found on the used market.
Some retro review models may be modified. In this case Dan has installed an ESU LokSound Select Micro DCC and sound decoder in the engine.
The N&W Class "J" was a beautiful locomotive. Thankfully one of them, No. 611, is preserved at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Dan's model represents this locomotive.
No. 611 was built in 1950. As an excursion engine, it is still steamed up on occasion, making this a great model for modern-era modelers who want to run steam once in a while.
As usual, Dan evaluates the model's packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
There's also a RIP Track segment where Dan addresses some of the issues he found with the model.
N scale has come a long way, and this is a nice running engine. If you're a fan of N&W, Norfolk Southern, or steam in general, be sure to check out this retro review!
Great review Dan! I'm liking these Retro product reviews. It's helpful for someone like myself who is a college student and budget modeler that can't usually spend on the more recent models coming out as much as I want them. LOL. Usually these days I get used and second hand models from trains shows (back when they existed), hobby shops, antique stores, and eBay.
I've bought tons of stuff used. A lot of the stuff in the "Box of the Month" shows is from eBay. Thanks for watching!
I bought my loco #601 5 years ago,and very like this one! It looks futuristic and runs smooth ! Thanks for video,Daniel !
You're welcome. I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!
Nice retro review Dan! Its amazing how in just 5 years since this model was made that the Model railroading scene has change so much in that time frame!
I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!
I really enjoy mine, I think it’s under rated. It’s one of the best Bachmann engines that I own.
This is a good model in spite of a few flaws. Bachmann can be very hit and miss, but this is one of the better ones. Thanks for watching!
Nice! One thing I did notice that was wrong was that the 611 has written “spirit of Roanoke” on the sides by the windows. Anyways keep up great videos!
That's good to know. Thanks for the info!
@@DanielCortopassi your welcome!
What's up Dan and Nichole!! If I
didn't have a 30 year collection of
HO Locomotives and cars I would
switch to N scale with all the great
running locomotives and cars that's
now available from Atlas and Kato
along with Microtrain cars I could
build a huge layout in the same
15×17 foot area I'm building a HO
layout in!!!
N scale has come a long way from when I was a kid. Things run so nice now, and they've got pretty good detail, too. Thanks for watching!
Linda maquina em meu país não tivemos estes modelos. Parabéns pelo vídeos.
Sorry you can't get models like this in your country. Thanks for watching!
The new release is mechanically identical as far as the loco goes with minor changes in the metal shell, but is DCC and sound equipped with a new tender. The changes in the tender are small and mostly affect the way the shell is mounted. The color of the red paint for the stripe is brighter than the last release.
Thanks for the info and for watching!
Hey Daniel, I'm exited for some more Retro Reviews! Last year I got a chance to look up close at the real #611 and the bell was mounted behind the pilot on the fireman's side of the locomotive. I guess they might have relocated the bell during the restoration but I can't think of a reason why they would do that. Just thought I'd let you know!
The bell has been there since it was restored on the 80's. When the J's were in service, it was mounted on top where bachmann has it.
That's interesting about the bell. I missed that bit when looking at photos. Thanks for the information!
Which decoder works for this train?
The model is designed to fit a decoder in the tender, so the decoder has to be small enough to fit in there. There is a speaker mount in the tender floor if you want sound. I put a LokSound Select Micro in mine a few years ago, but that decoder is out of production. The LokSound 5 Micro or Nano would be the modern equivalents (Nano is a little smaller). For non-sound any of the N scale sized DCC decoders that would fit should work. It should be about 15mm or 1/2 in wide or less. My model had a circuit board in the tender that had solder connections for DCC. I'm not sure if Bachmann has changed this in newer versions. The decoder I used had wire leads so I was able to trim them down and solder them. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
A little intrigued that you didn’t replace the Bachmann tender coupler with a Micro Trains one just as the case with some HO models receiving Kadees in place of the stock couplers. Also is worth nothing that the MSRP for the DCC ready version was $229.99 according to the original TSG review.
@@TheSuperStarCarWash Straight DC, but can be easily upgraded to DCC by removing a dummy plug.
Was I off by 99 cents? I referenced my old review while making this one. I wanted to change the rear coupler, but the way the tender is made would make it difficult to do with any of the available MT couplers. Since this isn't an engine I use often, and since it's N scale (where the forces on the couplers are smaller), I decided to keep the factory coupler. Thanks for watching!
I hope you review the Walthers Sunset Great Circus Train locomotive.
Unfortunately I don't have one of those to do a retro review on. I have plenty of other models, though. Thanks for watching!
Bachman's actually making more of these recently along with the Baltimore and Ohio em - 1
That's cool. It's nice when stuff comes back into production, in case you want more or missed it. Thanks for watching!
I knew the model looked familiar, just couldn’t put my finger on it.
It's been on the channel before. Thanks for watching!
I have the ho version
Cool. I don't have any experience with the HO version. Thanks for watching!
