Hyperballad Directed by Michel Gondry. Written by Björk. Published by Universal Music Publishing Ltd ® 1996 BjörkOverseas Ltd/One Little Indian Records Ltd.
My fave lyrics from the song. eyes open, as if she wants to see herself fall to her death, last glimpse, as if she enjoys chaos, or eyes closed because she just want to die in peace, beautifully letting go. hahaha thats my interpretation
I think she is throwing off the things that could physically separate her from her lover, then she imagines if it was her... what being torn from that love/relationship might do to her.
Honey Crispp my fav lyric too , nice interpretation , I launched pebbles at the beach once against the rocks and I was surprised that they smashed apart, don't know my own strength ❤️💚💛
love not just the musicality but the emotional complexity of this song. Most hear the suicidal ideation of throwing herself off a cliff and think 'this got dark, therefore deep, and that resonates with me because I have contemplated suicide.' IMHO there's more. In interviews Bjork said this song was about a moment 3 years into an established relationship where things were going good. So good that she feared what came next. She wakes up, walks out & throws things off the mountain to purge her negativity, literally casting out her morbid thoughts 'every morning' 'before he wakes up' 'so she can feel happier' and 'safe up here with you'. Think about that. Like everybody, she has negative emotions. but she needs to ritually purge them everyday for fear that letting her partner see them would pop the bubble of thier perfect relationship. Fear wrapped around love. Love dependent on fear. Which is stronger? The growing dance-beat expressing the Joy that nobody can doubt that she truly feels in the relationship post-purge, but that joy is bought through daily dishonesty. She loves her partner, but not enough to be emotionally intimate about negative thoughts and inner demons. She's constructed a glass ceiling in the relationship and she's getting nearer to it and that. is. terrifying. Which is so reminiscent to me of one's 20's (Bjork was 30 when this song was released), when you've likely had exposure to emotional relationships, but not enough to really know what you're doing. Only later do you learn that while you have to take responsibility for your own baggage, that doesn't mean that you have to go through it alone.
This song resonates with so many people for many different reasons, but what you mention really touches me to my core. I’ve always had my own interpretations of this song, but IMO, this is probably the most accurate representation of the lyrics. Thanks for this.
She's always ahead of her time ;) I went to her "Björk Digital" exposition in March, it's all virtual reality, apps, high quality effects and sound, it was amazing!!!
Yeah this fits right in with what was going on at the time. Techno was thriving and all kinds of electronic music was erupting everywhere. Björk's real talent is to pick elements of more "underground" kinds of music and incorporate them in her own unique (very marketable) package. I really like her music but I never thought of her as a groundbreaking artist. She is a perfectionist and she has always surrounded herself with people who are extremely talented (be it visual artists or session musicians).
It honestly does sound very 90s retrofuturistic, but unlike a lot of material of this style from this age, Hyperballad isn't dated, that is thanks to the immaculate songwriting
Björk is an extraordinarily innovative artist whose contributions to contemporary music, video, film, fashion, and art have had a major impact on her generation worldwide.
We live on a mountain Right at the top There's a beautiful view From the top of the mountain Every morning I walk towards the edge And throw little things off Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery Or whatever I find lying around It's become a habit A way to start the day I go through all this Before you wake up So I can feel happier To be safe up here with you It's early morning No-one is awake I'm back at my cliff Still throwing things off I listen to the sounds they make On their way down I follow with my eyes 'til they crash And imagine what my body would sound like Slamming against those rocks And when it lands Will my eyes be closed or open? I go through all this Before you wake up So I can feel happier To be safe up here with you
Sometimes I avoid listening to her music for a while just cause I get so caught up in listening that I don't do much else. Sometimes I cry listening to it all haha
Three layers of reality in this video: Bjork filmed, Bjork projected onto herself, and the video game graphic of Bjork. This theme is repeated in more of her videos, like Bachelorette, where the stage production is repeated in many less real layers of reality. For those of us who have had a glimpse of the hyperreal, this symbolism is clear and profound.
I was a young teen when I first heard this song and automatically fell in love with it, now I’m 31 and it means so much more to me. Ahead of its time for sure. 😍🙌🏾😭❤️
Whenever I’ve been experiencing bad episodes, I always plays this song on repeat and cry. Living with certain expectations and sacrificing things to make life comfortable for others; and having doubts of ending my life. This song kept me alive and this now reminds me that I made it through my darks days.
SiliconBong Ha ha... I can feel your love, but I'm afraid I cant agree. Kittens scare me, so in my mind I will change your kittens to boxer puppies.... :)
Everytime I hear this song, I (embaressingly)think about CKY2K when there all in Iceland and climbing the mountains and walking through the streams...YEAH thanx Bam...wish I was a zillionaire. I'd take a trip like that, too.
To be so aware of our mortality is such a beautiful yet fragile thing. This song brings me comfort in a bittersweet way. This woman was so ahead of her time ugh❤❤❤
This song was my favourite 5 years ago. I havent heard this in a long time. Now.. 5 years later, i hear this song again with the video clip. And it makes even more sense why I liked this song! woaow.. what an amazing woman Björk is.
Both the song and the video are top notch even by 2020 standards. Full of creativity, musicality, execution, originality and inspiration to evoke higher levels of emotions.
My top of best bjork songs: 16. Human Behaviour 15. All Is Full Of Love 14. Army Of Me 13. Joga 12. Bukolla 11. You Only Live Twice 10. Unravel 9. Bachelorette 8. All Neon Like 7. Big Time Sensuality 6. Venus As A Boy 5. Aurora 4. Karvel 3. Crying 2. Hunter 1. HyperBallad =)
IF U HAVEN'T SEEN DANCER IN THE DARK . One of the most astounding creations on film ever. Even the critics said she designed a new way of acting a new way of being an indie type of human. 🥰🥰🙏💜
This just might be my favorite music video of all time. Such a perfect match between the images and the song. Gondry and Bjork knocked this out of the park.
After all these years (this being one of my favorite songs ever!), I finally looked up the meaning behind the lyrics. I always interpreted it as a song about anxiety or panic disorder, but nooo, it's about relationships gone *blaaah. Björk: modern day poet and so much more.
Still my #1 favorite song to listen to on the odd chance I happen to wake up super early at like 5am. When no one else is awake....and the world is full of potential bubbling just under the surface.
Of this song, the thing which I love the most is the brilliant production which perfectly captures the almost alien and ethereal nature of bjork's artistry!
this not is only a excellent video that resemble a videogame in some sense, is a incredible artwork, combined with this fantastic song, makes a amazing psychical show, imaginative work of Bjork.
sé que quizá no sea el significado de las letras ni del tono, pero para mí, esta canción suena a romance y me parece que de algún modo dice lo que uno siente cuando esta feliz en medio de la depresión...
SO BEAUTIFUL! I first heard this when she performed it at Bonnaroo. She seems to be describing their love, so far above "regular life" -- (on the mountaintop)-- she throws off things that could physically separate them or end their love in the earthly realm; then she imagines throwing herself off, what it would do to her if their love died or was destroyed.

"I imagine what my body would sound like slamming against those rocks. And when it lands will my eyes be closed or open." What beautiful morbidity.

Ursine ComicGeek this is art she has a good voice
Mizti Mcquave what would you throw off if you wanted to? ❤️💚💛

Honestly I'm only looking for musicality.
Brilliant comment 🌟💡
glad you
are still here
Holy Sh%t 🙂. . . , thoughtful answer.
Arguably one of the most unique and innovative singer songwriters of our generation!
Which generation exactly? your generation?
I was born 2 years before this song came out.
But I probably don't quite make the cut..
@@Siberius- No argument.
No one sounds like her #OG!
unarguably
The most innovative
this song sounds so modern, I can't believe its from the 90's, she is such a visionary !
Riggo Lamb this song is art is really good
She's always ahead of her time ;) I went to her "Björk Digital" exposition in March, it's all virtual reality, apps, high quality effects and sound, it was amazing!!!
The 90's is full of these Cyberpunk sensibilities germinated through the 80's. Movies, songs and especially literature, full of it.

Love her... Who is still listening in 2020?
it's me
i never stop
here!
🙋🏽♂️
I will listen her while I could breath...
Hyperballad, Pagan Poetry, and Joga are the holy trinity of Bjork's magnificence.
Aqmal Nazeer I include another trinity stonemilker, wanderlust, all is full of love
I agree and would like to add another trinity:
Black Lake, Army of Me, Mutual Core
Aqmal Nazeer tea
Unison, Pneumonia and Generous Palmstroke all kill me
Unravel
Björk is an extraordinarily innovative artist whose contributions to contemporary music, video, film, fashion, and art have had a major impact on her generation worldwide.
Yes. She is. I love her because she is in her own musical world. Post is one of my favorite albums. She is what music should be. Beyond creative.
Very well said...
Who's Bjork?
Bjork is Bjork, who are you instead?
your right, I hate internet. but.... well thanks.... halo from Slovakia. Middle Europe... enjoy it people.... it was granted to us....

rulanoz rulan this is art. I love her voice
John Johnny yeah i know from my wife too, her music genre more artistic than me
Nani Orellana thanks, now almost 8 months without her in my life, i love and missin her so much, nothing compare with her
rulanoz rulan I can only imagine how beautiful she was. Stay strong my friend ❤
whoever did this video is a genius.
Michel Gondry - Yeah, genius fits him perfectly, so many amazing (music) videos
@@marfu999 did he also do eternal sunlight of the spotless mind
@@lynnpehrson8826 (yes)
He also did 'Be Kind Rewind'.
fausty150 that wasn’t so good.........Green Hornet was poor too
We live on a mountain
Right at the top
There's a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around
It's become a habit
A way to start the day
I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
It's early morning
No-one is awake
I'm back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes 'til they crash
And imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks
And when it lands
Will my eyes be closed or open?
I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you
Fiam M Thank you!
Thank you very much for the lyrics!
We need the lyrics to sing her beautiful songs! Thank you very much once again!
Fiam M 😭😭😭😭😭
Bless your heart ❤️
Sometimes I avoid listening to her music for a while just cause I get so caught up in listening that I don't do much else. Sometimes I cry listening to it all haha
She's so cute it hurts.
Björk, you are So Cute You're Hurting My feelings
Me too xc
She makes me feel emotional
But u aren’t the unique
me rn sigh
There's a purity in her voice that's almost too much to bear. This is beauty in its rawest form.
I borrowed this album from the library on tape when I was about twelve and had my mind blown
That's when music works best: the element of surprise.
Possibly my favourite Björk song.
possily my favourite song

Thank YOU
I'm about to turn 30 and I remember dancing and singing to this amazing song when I was 15. Such good memories, I grew up with this genius.
happy birthday
She came from another world..and inspire us:)
The planet of Iceland.
what a legendary song
This needs to be reuploaded.
and to me, it sounds like she was singing while recording the video and not lip syncing a finished song
no it is not unfinished. the verse was re-recorded for this musicvideo, taken from the layered video with her singing.
Also this version is on the single
This song has been making me cry cathartic tears since the 90s! Loooove it!
Whenever I’ve been experiencing bad episodes, I always plays this song on repeat and cry. Living with certain expectations and sacrificing things to make life comfortable for others; and having doubts of ending my life.
This song kept me alive and this now reminds me that I made it through my darks days.
not long enough at all. could cry for a few more hours tonight.
can't stop coming back to this
No one can take Björk out of my life. I adore her for last 25 years.
Pure Art.... I love her more than life.
I love her almost as much as i loves kittens :)
SiliconBong Ha ha... I can feel your love, but I'm afraid I cant agree. Kittens scare me, so in my mind I will change your kittens to boxer puppies.... :)
Lucy Lloyd You're beautiful :)
I do too !
Then.... I love you too
I really relate to these lyrics, in a weird way. What a fantastic song!

this is without a doubt one of the best songs of ALL TIME.
She is as Elvin as a Human can come to being Elvin and her voice is as close to Heaven as your going to get. This girl is worth dying for.
Michel Gondry is a visual genius. He and Björk were a perfect partnership.
One of my fave tracks by her. Just listening on a dark room, I get such vivid imagery, even before the video came out.
I think this is pure brilliance. The song is brilliant, the clip is brilliant. Björk is brilliant, Michel Gondry is brilliant. PureFuckingBrilliance.
This vid is def still ahead of its time :')

If I was asked to describe my 90's in one artist, it would be Bjork !
90s & millennium! her music still effects me.
barely listening to this amazing song mid 2024, curse you god for bringing me into this universe so late
One of the best songs and music videos ever made 👌🏻
A classic! Almost 25 years old and still a breath-taking song…
one of my most favourite ever songs....still gives me goosebumps when i hear it
I was in her concert in Bogota... That was one of the best nights of my life.
My god she is an angel. I love her and this is a great song. Simply amazing.
So many memories connected to this one...
This just might be my favorite music video of all time. Such a perfect match between the images and the song. Gondry and Bjork knocked this out of the park.
This has been one of my Queens since the 90's! 2020.... still and forever!

Poeple Say EVERY Human on Earth is Unique
But Björk is Really a 1 in 100 Years Unique.
I love bjork
There's a very fine line between genious and madness. And Bjork walks it flawlessly.
This song is like a mystery mountain.
One of my favs from Post, first time I watch the video and fell in love at the first second.
Still Amazing even now, Her voice just grasps’ at ME emotions.....Only Bjork and Lisa Gerald can do this to me...
i'm totally in love with Bjork, she is the best!
What an amazing video, gives me a very specific kind of nostalgia.
BJORK I EFFIN LOVE YOU MAN! YOU SERIOUSLY ROCK. KEEP GIVING US THE GIFT OF YOUR VOICE..
Her videos are even more beautiful when you're high. The concept of this video is so cool and weird and amazingly different 😫🙌
theoriginaljean this on LSD

This video is the perfect gem to watch again Hyperballad--both so good!
Ela é atriz, instrumentista e produtora musical. Lançou nove álbuns de estúdio e duas trilhas sonoras.

Can't wait till I get to see this in 1080p. It's gonna be so awesome
The crazy thing is fifteen years later this song is still ahead of it's time.
This is strangely beatiful
I NEED a book read out by Bjork, any book, even the bible will do, it will definitely get me to sleep, just with her lovely voice....
Bjork is a true what ever she is
artiste...incredible..
There was DaVinci... There was Picasso... And there is Björk.
She's Bjork. She's from Iceland. She used to be in a band called The Sugarcubes and there is NO ONE like her. She is always changing.
You are lucky to have found her.
the best Gondry video
There's so much beauty in this song. She imagines herself crushing against the rocks so she can truly appreciate the luck of being alive and loved :)
Incrível que esse vídeo foi postado um mês antes de eu nascer

She´s a weird kind of fairy or angel. Crazy, yet beautiful!!! I love her. I love this song. Never tired to listen to it.
no one like her , never will be
Listen to Aurora. She is heavily influenced by Bjork and on the same wave length.
