However each singer has different qualities to his voice and interpretation of songs and how they should be sung with expression and feel. To me that was the main unique quality of Layne. Of course it very subjective but I think Jerry Cantrell bought out the great potential in their performance, song writing, embellishments and harmonies.love hate love is brilliantly sung as are all the AIC songs and what a great group of musicians they were. I think Chris Cornell is an objectively better singer. Especially listening to some of his acoustic work. His phrasing and improvisations are creative and sensitive and just impeccable. But Layne had a voice that was so perfectly suited for their style, plus his harmonies with Jerry, it all just worked so well together that I can’t even dispute Layne being #1. Chris is an extremely close second though, in my opinion.

@@daltonc.5720what is everyone basing this “Cornell is technically better” on? Staley had plenty of technical vocal training and experience and had a far wider range, better control, power, vibrato, distortion, and made it look effortless. Cornell, to me, is a bit one note excuse the pun. He really stays in what is obviously a comfortable range for him, and in general he’s not doing anything particularly interesting with his vocals, it’s usually very typical type of classic hard rock heavy metal fare that doesn’t really take any risks or produce any real “wow” moments. Not to say he’s bad, he’s obviously talented, I just don’t get this “he’s technically better” talk it seems like people who don’t have a technical understanding of singing looking for a reason other than personal preference to justify their choice of one over the other?
