Teleprompter on a Gimbal? YES!

- Recently I had a client ask if there was a way we could put a teleprompter on a mobile-camera rig, and, although some of this may be obvious, I'd just never seen it done, and I got it done with this rig, it worked great, and it was a lot of fun :)
I hope you enjoy my little description of how and why I used this particular set of gear, and why other options just wouldn't work for what I needed.

I was looking for a video about using a portable teleprompter on a semi-portable gimbal with a small mirrorless camera... and this video is that. Parrot has been ordered (already have a DJI gimbal that can take the weight), and I thank you for recording this extremely clear video on the topic! Wish it came up sooner in Google search results!

I would love to get that to work for me. Any time I have placed anything directly onto my lens the camera doesn't like it. That is definitely a use case I know I will eventually be called upon to do. Very good video.

This particular Parrot Teleprompter is designed to go on the lens and is very lightweight, even when you add a smart phone. Many lenses are way way heavier themselves than this small Tamron 17-28mm lens plus a Teleprompter plus a Smart phone. So the camera should be able to take it if it can take heavier lenses.

@@MarcusHutsell I tried to mount one onto a Canon R50 with a stock 35mm lens and it can't take the weight. So I am looking into different mounding options. When trying to gain focus would get Err 60, will shut down automatically.

I have the FX6 and FX30. Neewer X12 is coming next week. I'm planning to find a way to mount it on a tripod with a dolly and the DJi RS2 on top. Wish me luck :)

what is surprising is that the talent was comfortable reading a text from a moving teleprompter while walking around and looking natural. Wouldn't it be easier for the talent to learn their text and speak to camera "spontaneously"?
Hi Blas. Yes, I actually cut a portion out of my script talking about this point, and that the talent on that particular shoot just didn't have time to memorize the script, but I'm actually (also) very surprised he was able to read, walk, talk, and act pretty naturally on camera. I guess he was better at all 3 of those things and not as good at memorization. But, I'd probably be the same way, I'm ALWAYS reading from a prompter in 99% my videos.......but granted, I'm not walking-and-talking too!

i guess you can shoot in 4k and punch in. i am going to be trying this with a sigma 24-70. i used to have the tamron 28-75 but sold it.. which is lighter. and woulda fit for sure. probably would have been the perfect lens for this.
I also have the Tamron 28-75, and for my particular gimbal, the 28-75 would have been too heavy with the addition of the teleprompter. But of course different gimbal where you can get the camera further back would work just fine with the 28-75.
Also, shooting in 4K and cropping in and post would actually be worse and limit your final resolution.
Because even when you put the Sony A 7iii on APS-C mode on camera… You still get a true 4K output file.
Whereas, if you shot wide in 4K, and could see the Teleprompter in frame and then cropped in post, you wouldn’t have the same resolution, you’d have less to work with in post.
Regular full frame mode on the A7iii oversamples from 6K down to a 4K image file. When in APS-C mode, it’s simply crops in on the sensor, but you still get a true 4K output, because the on-camera crop mode is still a bit more than 4k, without seeing the teleprompter in-shot in the first place.

I was actually very glad this combination of gear worked out, it's the first time I'd been asked for a mobile-teleprompter, and I just knew trying to dolley a huge tripod and 17" teleprompter wasn't going to work for this particular shoot, so, this little rig did the job. It’s the Zhiuun Crane Plus gimbal, and for a fairly budget gimbal, it works well for me. I just used it a few weeks ago on another gig. I would prefer a lower-slung rear motor, but I don’t use it often enough to justify selling/buying a new one.

Hi there. The gimbal you used in this video is no longer available on Amazon. Do you have any other recommendation for a gimbal to work with this teleprompter? I have the teleprompter and iPhone but it wouldn’t balance with my Zhiyun Crane M3S Handheld Gimbal.
Does it work well on sunlight?
Well, I DID use this rig outside. However, it was a bit of an overcast day, and we were behind a building, so not in direct sunlight. I guess it depends a little bit on your performer's eye sight, but I think if you were close enough to the talent, they'd be able to read it well enough. I just tested this outside myself, and, as long as the sun is off to the side of the prompter so the prompter glass is in shade, then I was able to read my script just fine from about 3.5' away. It's currently a mostly-sunny, bright-ish late afternoon here in Texas with misc, small clouds, but, it worked for me, I was able to read it just fine. I hope that helps. Good luck.
I just noticed with another test that some of my lighter clothing and hands were reflecting off the prompter and can obscure the white-text-on-black-background from my prompter app. I was wearing a black shirt, and when my black shirt was reflecting in the prompter (to my eye's vew) then the text was easier to read. but, if you get the angles right, I can still read just fine.

I need a teleprompter that I can attach a tablet to my Gimble so I can do my own recording for my own blog is that possible?
Hi there Zoltan. Well, yes, there are teleprompters that will hold a tablet. But, telepromtpers that can hold a tablet are going to get large and heavy very quickly, If you are wanting to be MOBILE (hand-held) then I think the weight of the entire thing would be too much if you're trying to VLOG/self-film, especially since most larger teleprompters to NOT attach to the camera direclty.....usually they come with a larger sub-structure that you then attach the camera to.
The PadCaster Parrot is large enough for what I needed for this walk-and-talk shot for this video. It worked well enough for the talent and they could still be about 5 to 7 feet away from me and still read my iphone very well. You just have to have the right lens/field of view so you don't "see" the teleprompter in-frame. This Padcaster Parrot may be the only model that is light enough to be able to do what I do in this video.
It looks like Desview makes a model that still attaches to the lens and holds larger tablets: amzn.to/3IkD6ia You might give that a try.
However, if you are going to be stationary then there are plenty of teleprompter models out there that will hold a tablet.

The teleprompters that can hold a tablet start to get large (ish) and expensive relatively quickly. But, if you're in a fixed-location, they're absolutely worth it. I've used this one from Glide-Gear before, but I did find it took a lot of camera/angle adjustment to get everything just right: amzn.to/3Iogmhj It works, but it's also $200.
