From the Vault: Colt Boa Revolver

- On another field trip to the Rock Island Auction House, Brownells resident firearm historians Keith Ford and Steve Ostrem show us a rare Colt Boa .357 Magnum revolver. This is a gun every Colt "compleatist" collector MUST have. In the 1980s, the distributor Lew Horton had Colt build a limited run of 1,200 Boas - and that's the total number of Boas in the entire world. Looks like a Python, but... it's not. The Boa is a Python barrel mated to a Trooper Mk V frame and given the Python's high-polish blued finish. The Python's action is distinctly smoother, but the Boa IS the far rarer gun. If you see a Boa for sale somewhere, Uncle Steve has some advice for you....

I'm a proud owner of a Boa four inch barrell ;)
Lucky!
The Boa “The Constrictor” Colt 😮😲😮😀😎
$9,000 to $13,000 WOW!
"They're not ever going to make any more"
Laughs in CZ ownership
Cool thanks for sharing
Pretty cool feature. 👍
Nice beautiful revolver
Beauty.
I find it ironic that a dog in its day was the Colt Viper but now another collectible.
"...for putting you in the predicament of having to choose through all these guns...." I feel so sorry for you, Steve. I tell you what, if it's too much for you, I'll be glad to take your place next time. 😂😂😂😂
Another great video, fellows - thank you - I learn from each of them. With this said, I’ll stick with my five-inch barrel, early 1970’s, Smith 27-2. Colt “snakes” may be more rare and valuable, but I respectfully suggest Smith M27s (of that era) are more useful, durable, and reliable.
Nope! But you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. A Colt Python leaves that Model 27 of yours in the dust. The only downside about the colt is its expensive to repair and replace parts these days. Usually the double hand will go out as they made that part cheaper so it wouldn't wear on the ratchet. The guys that can tune them are becoming more hard to come by. Its just as durable and reliable as any Smith. And useful? You sound dumb man lol As long as you know how to take care of a revolver and don't abuse it. It will take quite a while for a Python to go out of time. Get your head out of your ass.
@MKnight515: Beware, arrogance and ignorance is a horrible combination. And vulgarity certainly does not enhance your credibility.
@@roykiefer7713 I only say this because this isn't the first time I've seen your username on a 'From The Vault' video talk up your Smith and talk down the Python. There are many individuals out there who have thousands of rounds down range with their Pythons and the lockup is still tight. And yes they know how to check the lockup, unlike some people. Beware, your opinion of the Model 27 doesn't enhance your credibility.
@MKnight515: Yes, we certainly are all entitled to our individual opinions. What gentlemen are not entitled to, however, is to treat “internet strangers” in a demeaning, abusive or vulgar manner, Your writing “you sound dumb man” and “Get your head out of your ass” doubtless qualifies you as extremely boorish and obviously violates the tenets under which gentlemen are permitted behave.
@@roykiefer7713 Com'on Roy, Don't be such a snowflake
I picked up a colt border patrol can't find to much about it. Didn't pay much for it and it good condition hardly a turn ring and the finish still looks dang good
This is when men took pride in their work.!.!.!
Saw one sell on gunbroker yesterday for 34k
Old model King Cobra must be something very close to this Boa, isn´t it?
Same lockwork of 1st generation King Cobra. Both are on "J" frames, similar in size but different from Python "I" frame.
I never cared for the MK 5 actions compared to the MK3
I’ve always preferred the Mk5. Good to have options.
@@brentchambers511 I carryed a MK 3 so I compare all others to it
The Mk 3 Trooper with a bulls eye spring kit and a worked action is a wonderful feeling.
I have a python and I shot a lotta hot loads through it and have no problems. If I do run into problems like the timing who can I take it to
A qualified gun smith should be able to handle it. If you are not comfortable with that, maybe Colt would fix it.
بدي واحد مثلو بس من برى ماادخل عحدى
If Colt had used a Mark III frame instead of a Mk 5 it would have been a much better gun.
Now selling for $25,000
I would love if this dude took his gloves off, spun the cylinder and cowboy flipped it.
I remember Boa was a completely market failure
For what reason?
@@vabbe71 Dunno, nobody interested in it at the time.
I remember dad built a cougar back in the day. Colt python barrel, on a ruger security six frame. He has small hands, so the ruger fit his hands better, but the cheep security 6 gun, with the python accuracy. More practical than the Boa.
@@jackdundon2261 nice. I don't see the Boa as a shooting gun, it's a peice of collectors item I hardly think anyone shoots with. Bersides that it's a 357 on a fragile frame, and because of that the Boa was discontinued due to the high risk of backfire / explosion, a much higher percentage than with other 357's. That's the most logical of all reasons I've heard about WHY the Boa was discontinued immidiately after it's first batch, is that far too many of them when tested in the Colt lab couldn't stand the pressure of the higher grain 357 cartridges, but by then Colt har already shipped all Boa's to Lew Hortons for sale
@@vabbe71 I hate do say this.but your spewing 100 percent nonsence! Here is why:
The colt trooper, the trooper mark 3, mark 4 and mark 5 were all .357 Magnum guns. The ONLY difference between a python and a trooper was trigger, hammer, 'better fit' internals, and much more time for fit and polish. the other difference was the barrel. Python vs standard
So when somebody tells me the Boa can't take the backpreassure, I go.... BULL crAP. Backpreassure is something in a cars exhaust, not a problem in a 357 fraimed gun firing another 357.
What I honestly think your talking about is the colt Cobra, the aluminum framed 38 speacial. Those has fame issues. Infact RIGHT NOW, there is one that's blown up for sale in gun broker. Opening bid is 50.00 it's worth checking out. I am thinking about buying it, and pouring epoxy around it, and making a book end out if it.
Anyhow, the reason the boa was discontinued, it was a limited production gun, and was VERY expensive. They didn't sell well. The dan wesson is arguably a better gun. The python was already made, I have read the mark 5 had. Great trigger, but without the 8" target barrel. Why buy it for target shooting?
Anyhow go check your story out, I could be wrong,so go prove it.
Three rules to gun collecting Colt,Colt and Winchester!
...back when Colt cared about their customers. I'll never buy Colt.
Can't afford one?
"The ones that don't like Colt's Firearms Can't afford them"
Anyone going November 2nd, 2nd Amendment rally at the Whitehouse front lawn...
Never to be made again. OK 😁
Have you guys seen what these pistols demand??? Obviously not. “ I wouldn’t trade my 3k Python for a 12K Boa.
If you did that $12K Boa is now worth $25K
@@ken03903 Thats is why It is still in my safe 🧐
@@edgarvega6906 I'm selling my Boa in the next month
