Thank you for sharing the dangers and what you do to weigh the odds in your favor. When I started as a bucker in Forks Wa. in 1972, I had no experience except cutting firewood. I had been setting chokers on a highlead side.The falling contractor was getting older and the timber was so big that he wanted a bucker. His two sons were falling everyday also.I made so many mistakes and was so slow that he wanted to fire me everyday but I showed up and gave 100%. He had been falling since hand saw days and was so good that he could put enough wood on the ground in 2 or 3 hours for me to buck for 6 hours.Bucking 3' to 6' dia. trees all day takes a long time. He was good to me and I learned how to fall just watching him.Some of the 8-10 ' dia. took several hours to buck. I am 76 and love watching you. I wish I knew 1/2 as much about falling and bucking as you. You are the greatest faller I have ever seen.

you cut some real good wood over there, that maggot clinton gave a lot of that wood away to Asia where they have it submersed in saltwater, I cannot remember how many supertankers full or wood I saw leave the piers in Seattle during that time, Nafta. clinton, real loser, gave it to them.. the lagging was huge on the pennesula, then one day it stopped cuz clinton was out and they stopped that cutting of our national forests and giving it away to asia, they were taking ancient maple out of the ancient forests... just got greedy, the lines of trucks you would see driving out to forks out of work, some outfits had 20 tractors lined up, no wood to haul .. had they done it right and kept the wood here in the USA and replanted accordingly our timber may be in better shape, the poor poor management all but destroyed it, the lack of proper replanting and cleaning up took its toll... sad really, all that old virgin timber that we never even used... could still be standing tall, that and the lack of spotted owls of course... :-) did you see they are on the come back? someone spotted one or spotted an owl, spotted a spotted owl was it?
Worked as a production cutter in Scotland, what you and your felling brothers are up to is on another level 👍 what you call bucking we used to call snedding and cross cuts to contract size, respect !
Bro the balancing on those two skinny logs doing a face cut is ballsy as heck. That is some serious sawmenship. I’d love to shadow a guy of this caliber to learn from them. Seriously impressive.

This tree already had rot in the base and it was a dead tree. All trees have a useful lifespan and then they fall and decay. This is healthy part of forest management and old growth is in parts of the forest on federal land. That’s what it’s used for. I own 15 acres of forest in the Bradshaw Mountains in Arizona. I have fir, ponderosa, and blue spruce. There are so many downed 125-150’ trees it’s ridiculous and all that wood is a fire hazard and not good for anything else. The forest needs to be thinned and wood harvest for products. There is mismanagement of forests but this isn’t it. Forestry is good for the forest. Allows young generation of trees to flourish and well as other vegetation. Yes huge trees are wonderful to see but their days are numbered. Use them while you can and nothing goes to waste.

It's funny you speak in kilometers and meters, us at the south border have to get our our calculators out to figure it out. Inches and feet here in Oregon. Great video, be careful up there.😊
That’s how my cousin got rolled into the ground by bucking an old growth. he was some what lucky because the ground was semi dry small swamp bog But still suffered brain injury.
Over here 'DOWN-UNDER' our TOOLs with HANDLEs are FIBERGLASS,. Maybe you might consider installing likewise with said HANDLEs, having an added twist? By inserting an aluminium rod for extra re-enforcement, using a handle template as a mould for the pouring around the aluminium rod? 😁👌& angle your moulded handle to sought your trade usages!?

Thought about using a fiskars composite axe? If mine were wooden i'd have broken it 2 dozen times already, nearly indestructible
do you change the chain at all during this or is it all done with the same chain? if you use the same chain do you notice that it gets duller/ slower as the job goes on?

Around 600 a cubic meter and there might be 30 meters in it so 18k ?

Anyone know how many hours a "shift" is and what a good or bad day is regarding the number of trees felled in a shift?
6.5hrs on the saw a day. 14-21 day shifts. We don’t count the number of trees we cut in a day. It’s about how many cubic meters a day, on average, you cut. Which also varies depending on the wood type, size, terrain, weather(ie. wind) understory, snags, hang-ups, heavy learners, location of block boundary and block size and shape, conventional or heli and what type of helicopter. Easy walking or thick bush, retention and designated “leave patches”. So there’s a lot of factors that will affect a fallers day-to-day volume of merch wood.

Bajarne, how long do you think it took you to get proficient in ambidextrous logging? I had a friend who was left handed and he use to nick up his chaps all the time tell one day he went to deep and bound up his saw. Took me awhile to figure out how he did it tel l I picked up a saw left handed. It brought the power head closer to his leg. Then I was wondering 🤔 do they make a saw for left handed, or is he just a idiot lol 😝

What a beautiful place to work . Little hard on the body but keeps you in shape. Much respect to all who do this work day in and day out . Also is a bit sad to see those beautiful giants fall and likely never be replaced by anything of that size again . Simply too much demand to allow them to grow to that size and that is why these giants are being cut from these hard to get to locations because all the easier ones are gone already. Great work from great men dropping great big trees.

No the cutblock is assessed before cutting. So an estimate of the value has already been done
that loks like a very small chainsaw for such a big tree...
When i started at the beginning of day rate it was 90 dollars day a and that was what a pare corks were i seen the destruction a few years latter i tried to stop the export of the raw log export hens the term save the old growth 😢
Concerns about the sawdust damaging your eyes and ingesting the dust A light set of goggles and a face mask would help.

The axe is a very personal thing to fallers they all have their own preference , Bjarne seems to favor a short one more than his bigger ones. Buckin Billy Ray Smith has a head shape he calls the wood bullet, they both know Donny Walker it would benefit them both to put a ring on a wood bullet and Bjarne to show him what he likes in handles .😀
a maul why u ask the maul on the back has the sledgehammer yes its heavy'er then say a spilter or a chopper but will not crack in the handle. or simply carry a heavy hammer on u and you use that been done that lol.

I like old style tools and axe’s . I have a few lovely old axes and a couple of double bits however I’ve been using Fiskars for work for 15 years and I wouldn’t use anything else. You should try one 👍
I got a Fiskars last fall with a glass handle. It’s great using the blade and it’s nice and light to pack around but it buzzes my hands so bad when driving a wedge I had to go back to a wood handle.
