Bought a brand new carb for my weed eater (Craftsman) and it wouldn't start. I come to RUclips and put in Craftsman weed eater wont stay running and voila! FIrst link was yours! I had the adjustment tool in my tuneup/carb kit and didn't even know it! Made adjustment to the low end first and it started right up! After running a minute made adjustment to high end and it runs like it should! Thanks man...I appreciate it!
Thanks for the video, I just did what you showed and now my old weedeater and a new one that i got last year to replace the old one will run again. The new one had started the same thing that my old one was doing, bogging down . Now I've got both running good again. Thanks you save me money .
I have the same craftsman weedwacker hasn’t ran right since I got it about two years ago. I did your trick with a pen today and thing is running amazing. What a difference. Thank you so much for posting this!
Thank you!!! I have this exact weed eater and it would idle great but bog down when on the throttle. I bought a set of adjustment screw drivers off Amazon and this was the "double D" as it has 2 flats and 2 rounds on the sides. Mine was 2 full turns out and it was perfect!! On this craftsman, the inner one is the high, and the outer is low, contrary to what another poster said. Thank you again!! Mine runs great now!
Thanks, Chris this info was a God send!! I've tried changing the gas with "brand new" fresh gas, adjusting the idle, cleaning the air filter, changing the spark plug and anything else I could find that might "fix" the problem of it bogging down and dying on me. I was really starting to think it hated me!! I tried your trick with the pen...tried a hack saw to cut the pen and it did not work, it cut it but changed the size of the hole. Then used a box cutter and HOLY CRAP... It cut it the perfect size and worked like magic. I was able to fit it and turn it and now my 'Craftsman Weedwhacker gas trimmer' works like a dream. I never would've thought to use a pen...lol Funny how they don't want the consumer who bought their product to be able to make minor repairs to it, and if we mark up the products trying to do it ourselves our warranty gets voided. Your way made it so I didn't have to spend money I didn't have, but still fixed it and it does not affect my warranty status. Thank you so much for this video. :)
Chris!!! I'm not worthy! OMG...i've struggled with this SOB for TWO YEARS!! And I've watched about 15 videos - some of them extremely well made, and I know the video makers sincerely try to help. I'm not taking anything away from them. BUT...Chris...I've got the EXACT model weedwacker as yours, and I'd tried everything I could think of - new fuel filter, new bulb and lines, cleaned spark plug, higher octane gas, clean carb, clean air filter....you name it. But your advice got me to the Promised Land! How cool is RUclips?? And how cool are excellent contributors like you!?!? Finally....I'm getting full acceleration/rpms from my Craftsman. Thank you!
I have this exact one as well.it idles really high with the choke on but when u give it gas it just dies out.im gonna tay this tomorrow.do you guys know the model number because my sticker scratched off half the numbers.thanks alot
Chris,You are a pragmatic genius!!! Watched several videos and after wtaching yours I was able to fix my weedeater under 2 minutes before going out and thinking of repairing or buying another. The mark on the screw paid off and making your own adjustment tool with a plactic pen (used a Bic pen and forced it a bit) was pragmatism at it best. Thanks from Montreal and keep making videos on youtube as you have a talent to fix things but most if all to make the complex so simple. Lucky Louis
Thank you so much for the advice on the high speed set screw. I couldnt use a pen but was able to "punch" a groove into the top of the screw and make an adjustment from there.
BTW Harbor Freight sells a kit with 4 different tips, 4 different screwdriver handles. each one has a different configuration to fit the various fuel adjustment screws. So far i haven't run into an adjustment screw that one of the 4 didn't fit. . I did have to modify one of screwdrivers a little, but they work. its worth a try. I think I paid 5 or 6 bucks for the set of 4. i work on these small motors all the time and I learn new tricks from you guys out their in RUclips land! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
You can buy the tool off Ebay for not too much. Many problems are the result of old lines and primer bulb. They get micro cracks in them and leak air which will cause stalling. Replace those at least every other year.
Haha! I have this SAME weed eater! I used the tiny pliers from the craft section at the dollar store! Thank you very much! I’ve never been happier to cut my grass! 😂
Seriously my man, I've been fighting this all summer, replaced fuel line like wtf?? Thanks cant wait to try, didnt even see tthem screws 👍👍👍👍👍 your the man Thank You
The new Craftsman trimmers seem to suck. I bought a 4 cycle Craftsman about 10 years ago. It was the attachment type model. It stopped gabbing the attachments that were attached to it and a replacement shaft cost as much as a new trimmer. The new trimmer is about a year old and already has problems restarting after warming up, bogging down when giving it full throttle, and I think they gave me about an inch of trimmer line in the trimmer part.
Illegal??? WUT? lol You can order any carb adjustment tool on amazon. I wouldn't say that's strong as ever if it shuts off when you release the throttle. You need to adjust the idle screw for richer mix.
Thank's a lot.. Got the same thing happen to mine while I was cutting the lawn.. Use your idea but with a small cutting drill bit and a small screwdriver.
I don’t think they’re lying. When I went to buy one the guy said they aren’t authorized to sell them due to EPA restrictions but he told me I can buy them online.
Carburetor adjustment tools of the various types sold on Amazon in a kit for about 20 bucks. Mine came with cleaning kit for carburetors, as line, and a gas line filter. All in a nice pouch. Somebody may have already informed you about it already. I know nothing about why the mechanic would say they were illegal for him to sell one to you. Strange!
i agree with several people on here. I was also told it was illegal to have the tools for adjusting the carbs. i have the tools to adjust them with. Shocked me when I found them. I agree that Small Engine repairmen will tell you they're illegal cause they're losing your business.
These new engines are crazy. I had to run my trimmer with the choke on constantly to make it run. Same for a small tiller I have. I bet it to comply with emissions testing or something.
Thanks for the vid. I just took my needle nose and stuck them right in around one adjusting screw at a time and gripped as I twisted little by little. Worked like a charm.
All you have to do is open the low jet about 1/4 turn, maybe more or maybe less. After doing this you might have to adjust the idle screw. I've adjusted two cycle carbs for 60 yrs.
Bill Gerlach Bill, I'm fighting the same problem. I changed carb, plug, fuel filter. I cleaned spark arrester screen and ran engine degreasor through carburetor while running. Still, itruns in half-choke but bogs down with choke off. Did you figure it out?
I bought the *Single D tool* online that fits those consumer trimmers and was able to tune my trimmer so it works better. I also discovered that adding Marvels Mystery Oil to the gas cleans out the varnish that restricts the fuel and I had to lean out the fuel after two tanks (a quart of gas). Now I use the walmart Super Tech oil with Marvels in the gas and the trimmer runs strong and as hard as I can push it. The trimmer is four years old and I run a brush cutter blade on it.
Sheik Shakur The guy said it was illegal for him to sell it to me not illegal to buy off eBay. This video is for quick fix without waiting for shipping
My man you can do that with a Dremel just cut straight across both of those screws and that makes a flat head screw on both of them makes it a lot easier
There are two screws yet nobody ever says which one they turned or that they never touched the "other" screw. They just guessed and got it right. They just say "then I turned it".
Why did that guy say that those adjustment tools were illegal? Never heard that before. There is a tool for just about anything. I am sure if I searched up adjustment tool for weed eater it should come up on google. I think I might try your method though I am not sure how well I will complete the job. We will see.
Go on Amazon and order the carburetor adjusting tool kit it comes with all the screwdrivers you need like a 12-piece kit some of made me mad the brushes and a jet cleaners
I cant believe that letting you have or buy the tool was illegal. I don't know about you guys Big brother tell me what I can and cannot do. That just blows my mind
I'd say it's pretty stupid not letting the consumer adjust the carbs themselves and subsequently having the weed wacker thrown into a landfill because they aren't worth fixing.
When all fails, go on either Amazon or EBay. I bought a new carb for $12 and the adjustment screw drivers for like $6 for a set that fit almost all models. illegal my ass. They just want to bend you over Bro.
awsome trick. i have a murray brand just like that one n have same prob. had a guy completely disassemble it but didn't change a thing. weird thing is that it actually came that way for whiz mart?anyway thanks man. gna try it soon the weather here in maryland clears up. been raining for a week now.👍👍👍👍
5/31/2018- I've been trying to solve this problem all day. They must've caught on to the pen trick because the distance between the top of the carburetor screws and their housing is just tight enough to not allow the body of a pen. I tried shaving the pen down to fit the gap- it fits once the pen is thin enough to just tear rather than turning the screw. Save yourself the time and use a dremel if you have it. I've seen other vids of ppl using wire splicers/connectors (sorry no clue what theyre called) but didnt get a chance to try it, they may work. Remington rm2510
Man even 3 yrs later yoir video is saving people money. Thank you. I couldn't figure this out til i used your method. Your the Man bro...

Thanks allot!? Runs like new!!

You can also take the carburetor off and cut grooves with a hack saw.

robert patterson I am not sure about the model number I can look when I get home but this should work on any weed eater where you can adjust the carbs
Chris,You are a pragmatic genius!!! Watched several videos and after wtaching yours I was able to fix my weedeater under 2 minutes before going out and thinking of repairing or buying another. Lucky Louis
TheMatthewandLeo I appreciate your kind words very much thank you. And I am glad this video was able to help
The adjustment screw on the outside is the high and the one closest to the engine is the low or idle. They are marked H. L
That's right Jenny Greer
You are correct I apologize for that piece of misinformation but I would say the same logic applies as in which direction I had the screws turning
Thank you so much for the advice on the high speed set screw. I couldnt use a pen but was able to "punch" a groove into the top of the screw and make an adjustment from there.

I have that same trimmer, someone gave it to me and it was doing the same thing. Adjusted the carb abs it runs like a champ now.
That's Craftsman for you,all of the trimmers i owned could be adjusted with a regular flat tip or phillips.
Haha! I have this SAME weed eater! I used the tiny pliers from the craft section at the dollar store! Thank you very much! I’ve never been happier to cut my grass! 😂
Seriously my man, I've been fighting this all summer, replaced fuel line like wtf?? Thanks cant wait to try, didnt even see tthem screws 👍👍👍👍👍 your the man Thank You
I used narrow needlenose pliers. 1 turn and runs like a champ. Ty

Yep, aka pack-man wrench
Thank's a lot.. Got the same thing happen to mine while I was cutting the lawn.. Use your idea but with a small cutting drill bit and a small screwdriver.
Glad it helped bro
small engine shops tell you they're illegal so they can charge an arm & a leg to adjust your carb...I bought a set of 4 from Amazon for 20 bucks.
Alan Marshall yea figured they were lying.
i got a set of 5 for $8 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FAP7T44/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
yang mills man, you got a great deal on those! Must be getting cheaper, I've had mine for about 3 years now.
I don’t think they’re lying. When I went to buy one the guy said they aren’t authorized to sell them due to EPA restrictions but he told me I can buy them online.
I was told by a small engine repair shop they didn't make a tool..lol..
Thank you for the video. This experience i am having with my piece of crap craftman blower made me decide to never buy anything from them again!
I completely understand .
Carburetor adjustment tools of the various types sold on Amazon in a kit for about 20 bucks. Mine came with cleaning kit for carburetors, as line, and a gas line filter. All in a nice pouch. These new engines are crazy. I had to run my trimmer with the choke on constantly to make it run. Same for a small tiller I have. I bet it to comply with emissions testing or something.
Just FYI, you can go online and buy everyone of the adjustment screws drivers in a case.
Thanks brother, I have the exact same problem and u just made it easier! Thanks again man
kill Joy Your welcome glad I could help man!
Chris Byrd got it rippen soon as I got done watching your vid. Keepm comin. Thanks again!
They are actually fuel mixture adjustments. Turn clockwise to lean mixture and counter clockwise to richen the mixture.
Thanks for the vid. I just took my needle nose and stuck them right in around one adjusting screw at a time and gripped as I twisted little by little. Worked like a charm.
It's a Pac man driver that fits in those ports. They normally come in carburetor purchases online, mine did at least
All you have to do is open the low jet about 1/4 turn, maybe more or maybe less. After doing this you might have to adjust the idle screw. I've adjusted two cycle carbs for 60 yrs.
Thanks Chris, gonna try this on my Husqvarna. It usable on half choke but bogs down when throttled on no choke. Appreciate the tip!
Bill Gerlach No problem glad to help!
Bill Gerlach Bill, I'm fighting the same problem. I changed carb, plug, fuel filter. I cleaned spark arrester screen and ran engine degreasor through carburetor while running. Still, itruns in half-choke but bogs down with choke off. Did you figure it out?

Appreciate the video. Gonna try this and hope it fixed my weed eater.
Great video with useful info! Thanks!
Mick Galyean your welcome. Thank you for watching
Good idea with the mark with the knife
Use an 12v mal3 or female connector electrical connector . Works great on those jets for adjustment.
You are the man!!! Thanks so much. Worked perfect.
Francis Scullin glad it worked for you man!
Same trimmer, same problem. THANK YOU
Seth Patterson your welcome
Very good advice. But it should not have shut off when you let go off the throttle. It should have went into low idle with the cord head running slow.
I used a dremel with a cutoff tool and cut right across the the pair of screws and the housing making a slot in both screws.
All you have to do is to buy a Carburetor Adjustment Tool Kit for Common 2 Cycle Small Engine, you can get 10 different shape tools.
I just ordered the tool on Amazon hopefully I won’t get arrested
At :50 I thought, dude is a cop,. At 3:05 it's a power wheel. lol. Nice vid I will try your technique.
Now thats funny
wow sir thanks so much the pen thing worked for me and now i am good to go thanks from canada
Chris Clayton you so welcome
For me 2 :)
You can get the H/L adjuster tool on eBay or geek/wish to buy.....I don’t think it’s illegal ....
Sheik Shakur The guy said it was illegal for him to sell it to me not illegal to buy off eBay. This video is for quick fix without waiting for shipping
yes i did remove the plastic 1/4 turn cap off..........still no affect...prob has other issues
My man you can do that with a Dremel just cut straight across both of those screws and that makes a flat head screw on both of them makes it a lot easier

Thanks for the genius tip!! Found a plastic pen in the house that did the trick !!!
je n'ai toujours pas reçu mon carburateur!!commandé en mars!
What if jet adjustment does not solve the problem?
Spark arrestor good.
Plug good.
Gaskets good
Fuel filter good
Thanks Chris! I will give it a try!
Good vid bro, also a valve stem remover will work as well to adjust the settings.
krisjingle thanks!
or go to ebay and buy the carb adj set of 7 tools for $8.00
Go on Amazon and order the carburetor adjusting tool kit it comes with all the screwdrivers you need like a 12-piece kit some of made me mad the brushes and a jet cleaners
Clean the exhaust screen aka exhaust arrester usually helps it breath too good video
Thank you, made the slots with my drumel tool. Made a 1/4 turn and my weed trimmer works like new! Sweet
That is what i did, used a dremel-type tool from harbor freight with the tiny cutting disks.
It cost me $8 bucks
Thank you so much brother.. u just saved me
Your very welcome
These machines come with bad carb adjustments right out of factory. They are set to some default that doesn't work for most people.
Did you cleaned up the carburetor?
Ebay you can get the single D carborator tool set $10✌
I cant believe that letting you have or buy the tool was illegal. I don't know about you guys Big brother tell me what I can and cannot do. That just blows my mind
Use a Dremel and cut the sides around the screws down.
It just needed a spark plug more than likely mine did same thing changed plug and ran like a champ again....
good video thanks for posting
California had a short time when those tools were not permitted into the state, but it was not enforced. They finally removed it from the books
Thanks bro, the pen worked for me!
you can get the tool on eBay
5 dollars for a carburetor spline tool on ebay! spending 5 bucks is way easier than hacking away at the smallest pilot screws in existence
I'd say it's pretty stupid not letting the consumer adjust the carbs themselves and subsequently having the weed wacker thrown into a landfill because they aren't worth fixing.
Ray Mihulka you can buy the adjusting tools off the internet. Walbro carburator adjusting tools.com
Very helpful. Thanks
Set of 6 special drivers about $6 at amazon!
Pretty sure you got high and low mixed up, cut slit with dremil and use small screwdriver.
Checked the spark arrestor?
No but it runs fine now
Dude a 1/4 inch copper tube fits tight on the top and they turn
mine has no affect when adjusting high screw....any ideas? and it only turns 1/4 turn...it has a tab stop on it
Take the limiter cap off to give yourself more adjustment
I use A wire butt connector
I put a new carb on my Poulan pole saw and now It needs a coil.
When all fails, go on either Amazon or EBay. I bought a new carb for $12 and the adjustment screw drivers for like $6 for a set that fit almost all models. illegal my ass. They just want to bend you over Bro.
awsome trick. i have a murray brand just like that one n have same prob. had a guy completely disassemble it but didn't change a thing. weird thing is that it actually came that way for whiz mart?anyway thanks man. gna try it soon the weather here in maryland clears up. been raining for a week now.👍👍👍👍
DIRTDIVER882 no problem man Glad I could help someone save some money.
The EPA yes on Amazon but don't get caught with it
You can it tools knline though
Buy a set of 5 tools on ebay for about 6 bucks. they work great
You should buy a splined screw driver on ebay.
Thanks dude, can i use a Bic pen instead? lol good job
Ordered mine from Amazon
Clean the fuel filter in the tank. Bam new machine. You are welcome.
Can anyone tell me what model troy-built uses the carb that has the adjustment screws I've got a Ca. non adj. model Thanks
You can buy the tool. I bought one from Amazon. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B073RZN5PQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Its called clockwise and counter-clockwise😀
It's not idling? They should run without you holding the trigger.
eBay has all 3 type tools for about 12 bucks
Took a Dremel and ground a slot for a flat head screwdriver
Cool trick Thanks
Thank you👍
But it's easier with the proper tools. Thanks for posting this vid.
