I owned record stores for decades...and spent every chance I could turning folks on to Karla.....enjoyed seeing her play with Bryndle in Asheville, NC along with my little girl who cut her teeth on Karla's music. While other stores were pushing Ronstadt...I was introducing folks to the woman who wrote the songs...and sang them with such great heart! Thank you, Karla...from the mountains of NC.
I saw Karla perform in 1978 at the Kimo Theater in Albquerque, NM. Sitting in about the fifth row, it was mesmerizing. As a veteran of decades of concert attendances, that was the most intimate and moving experience I've ever had.
Thanks so much for watching our journey together! Love to have you join the Living On Music Nation, go to facebook.com/groups/livingonmusic and also subscribe here on my Living On Music channel! Love to have you!
I too being the big music lover that I am have attended countless performances of various wonderful artists since I was a teen. Now 66. I just rediscovered Karla tonight on RUclips with her hit from 1982 'PERSONALLY' which is a fantastic upbeat fun song thatI adored when it came out on the radio. I have been reading and watching her perform on RUclips and her talent I can compare to Linda Ronstadt. I am amazed at the songs she has written. I could kick myself as she was just her in my town of Dallas in Jan. 2023 just few months ago! I did not know. Darn! So glad you got to see her.
It's so wonderful to hear how Karla wrote these magnificent songs. They are full of enrichment due to a solitude beyond understanding. Absolutey, great voice. Both her and linda compares to none singing the same song.
It's amazing how Karla never seemed to receive the recognition and fame as those who covered her songs. Karla's voice is so pure and pristine. I've never experienced a musician more capable of evoking so many tears.
Thanks for watching us, John! Yes she didn't get the personal career recognition she deserves but remains a revered songwriter and still has a huge fan base. And wow I see what I think your name is, you know what my Dad's name was? John Franklin Houk!
This is a true story : Just recently. I was on you tube watching one of Karla's video's and made a comment in the comment section that I wished that she would come to Asheville, NC. About a month later, I saw tickets on sale for Karla coming to the Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville... The Grey Eagle is a very small venue of about 200 seats and I couldn't believe she would play such a small a venue but I bought a ticket anyway, I went and she and Nina Berger put on a wonderful show !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After the show I met Karla and I was just tongued tied ...she was as beautiful as she was on the Restless Nights record cover ! I thanked her for coming to Asheville and told her she was awesome. She took off her mask and made a big smile that just melted me ! She has a beautiful smile !!! Nina was also great ! I hadn't heard a guitar played that well in a long time ! She played the Ukrainian anthem which was heart warming. It truly was a very special evening with her on July 24th, 2022 8pm I got a poster from GE and framed it. Thank you Karla and Nina !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this walk down rock and roll land with one of the real founders of the sound of the 70’s and the 80’s Karla deserves her own tribute for her dedication to the sound and music she helped create
I love Karla Bonoff!! Her voice is so pure, straight from the heart!! What an amzing Artist!! Thank you for this interview with her! She is a Treasure!!
Karla, you are a perfect pairing of vision & sound! Thank you for all your past & current contributions to music. It is MUSIC that makes the world go around & not Money as others have said.
Thanks so much for watching our chat, I loved talking with her. If you wish, please subscribe free to Living On Music on RUclips and check out all the fun runs I've had!
What a great interview with Karla Bonoff. I just happened onto your show on RUclips and am really I did so. I admire Ms. Bonoff and her work. Would have loved to have met her back in the day as I still write and perform and breathe and do it all over again! Best wishes to a wonderful 2023 to both Ms. Bonoff and you Steve Houk. Thanks for a great interview! I just subscribed! I’m #199! 🎵
I am 56 and I just watched About Last Night with Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. I faintly heard a song playing in the background in one of the scenes. I decided to look it up. It was Step by Step by Karla Bonoff and J.D. Souther. What a beautiful song, brought me to tears. They were both excellent as their voices blended so beautifully. It was the one most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. I can't believe it never became a top 10 hit. Karla is an amazing talent. People are right, she does not get enough credit. She needs to fire her manager as she should be a household name.
I absolutely love this woman and her songs I I first heard of her when Linda covered a couple of songs of hers. I immediately went out and got her album. That was around 1977.
Just discovered this channel (thank you RUclips), and subscribed. I was in college when Restless Nights came out, and immediately fell in love with Karla's songwriting and especially her vocals...bought the albums and the sheet music books (for piano), but those first songs inspired me to try the guitar (I even have a picture of me trying to play from that book). Tougher than I thought, but picked it back up in my 30's and now I play every day, and have written a few songs of my own. Thanks for all the great music and for the inspiration!
One of my favourite songs that Ms Bonoff recorded was ' The Water is Wide ' featuring the most improvisational Accordion solo from the brilliant genius Garth Hudson . She is rather special ,isn't she ?
My first cat Snookie was a feral kitten rescued from Grass Valley! She gave me 18 years of extreme love! Man. Karla looks more like my sister than she does! We are half Italians....thank God for me...the lower half.
James Taylor was my First Music Love! Sweet Baby James! Mom and Dad got me His first album! Under the Christmas tree when I was 12 ! 🎶🎶😂👍💗it was on a reel to reel tape😉😀
More of this, please. Thank you, Steve. KARLA!Your voice ***has not changed*** !!! You sound p r e c i s e l y the same as you sounded when you began. I swear it. Your pipes are velvet. All the best!
I am really enjoying this interview. I agree with the host regarding Silent Night….it gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. Nice to see you in your home with Benny. You said there were several cats around; I always saw you as one cat kinda gal. 🥰 I have told you many times, but let me say it again. You have an amazing voice, what a gift. Thanks for continuing to share it with us. I hope I get to see you live in 2023.💕
Saw her in Dallas Texas, with Jackson Browne as the headliner. I will never that show. Her solo album with "Rose in the garden," and "I can't hold on," is a masterpiece.
Such an amazing talent, just look at the artists she's worked with and written songs for. I love her duet with Christopher Cross 'what am I supposed to believe', and many many others. I have Karla's first 4 albums on CD. Truly one of the best singer/songrwiters in the history of music.
Thanks so much for catching our Living On Music episode Arun. It was a thrill for me and I love that people have enjoyed it. Subscribe to Living On Music if you wish, there are alot of fun rides with some big leaguers!
While I have yet to listen to this interview to completion - I find it very mentally satisfying to be able to put a name to a face - When I first heard the name “Karla Bonoff” I couldn’t figure out how to pronounce her last name - - I wasn’t sure if I needed a “running start” past “Bon” in order to get to “Off” part of the name - Plus, learning peoples name pronunciations manage to give me anxiety - not wanting to muddle them. 😳
She has most gorgeous vocals needs to do spiritual roots ballads introspection stories to song Folk Art. I have always mostly adored all the powerful inspiration ballads that saved my life. I love easy listening harmonies ballads great sing along that I can sing to my kids and pets harmonies soul food,

I am exactly Karla's age and she is unbelievable. What a talent. Incredible voice.
Thank you! Karla Bonoff is one of my favorites who doesn't get enough attention as a songwriter and singer.
I don't understand why she doesn't have a HUGE FAN BASE,AND MILIONS PEOPLE WANTING TO HEAR!
As I have written before, she knows how much I love her.
Would love to see a documentary made about Karla Bonoff. She’s got a great story and the music to back it up! 🎵

No other artist sings the songs that you have written like you do. And can I just say you have always been so stunning throughout the years.💕

Such a great interview with such an incredible musical artist.
I just watched this in preparation to see her in Vashon, WA tonight. Great interview with a great artist.

I saw Bryndle once, after they reunited. I've seen Karla four other times, once with Kenny Edwards.
👍Amazing Karla.
She is up with Kathy Mattea & Suzy Bogguss who are ALSO MY ALL TIME FAVORITE SINGERS !!
ALL 3 are !!
Karla’s stuff is awesome.
He songs are sung best by her especially "all My Life"
Steve really likes the word "Wonderful"
She even toured with Janice Ian about 10-15 years ago. They were both great.

More about Restless Nights, which is simply full end to end of beautiful songs and the most solid entire-record in my opinion.
He forgot to mention another fabulous singer who performed Karla's beautiful songs....." Nicolette Larson"
Thanks John, wasn't aware of Nicolette's involvement, so thank you.
MINE TOO
i had no clue karla did this song i only knew the wynonna version 🙋♂️
Her voice is every bit as compelling as Ronstadt or anyone else.
True Steve, hope you liked our conversation. Subscribe if you wish, Skunk Baxter's show with me premieres tonight at 7!
WOW! MICHAEL MCDONALD IS GREAT!
need closed captioning.🙋♂
