I think you are completely misunderstanding LEGO. Their RC stuff can be amazing, check out the huge crane! They are designed for kids to run indoors. You are paying for the building experience. We are adults who love LEGO and RC cars, but Tamiya will never be LEGO and vice versa.
I need to interviene here, Lego is perhaps 'the' best toy of all time, and evaluating a Tamiya RC car against a Technic kit, while a great idea and makes a fun video, wasn't ever going to result in anything other than a drubbing for Lego. It is a great intro to RC cars and building kits for young kids. And a fun toy even for adults. But as for a comparison, try building a Tamiya car into a space ship, then a plane, then a lorry, then a boat, and I suspect the Lego would win out. Not having a go, I love your content, don't ever stop. I'm a die hard lego and rc fan 😂
I have seen a few people comment along the same kind of lines and yes, on the surface it sounds logical until you stop and think about it. These kits have a large number of dedicated design parts and this kit can’t actually be built into a space ship, bike or whatever. Lego kits like this have evolved into a build one thing design. Sure you can take all the inside little bits out and sling them in a large box with another ten plus other kits and you then might have the opportunity to build other things. Also, like I commented in the video, the “car” build experience was rubbish as 90% of it was just building the internal structure that has zero resemblance to an actual car. Now this isn’t LEGO issue, it’s a design issue as my other Lego car is way better in this area. I’m not sure how many people actually watched to the end to see me talk about that aspect. To top it off it didn’t look good and the performance was way below expectations even for a Lego RC car. It was on par with the most basic cheap RC toy grade car. I think Lego could have done a much better job for sure.
@@RCKickschannel I think the title 'Worst RC Car Ever' is perhaps the reason so many people have commented. I don't disagree with your review, I just don't think anyone who knows Lego would have expected it to come within a 1000 miles of a real RC car. So defo helpful for those unfamiliar with Lego. Lego is really about many things, not least using your imagination to create alternate builds, usually in combination with your existing Lego collection, and as an adult, trying to improve on the kits design. I do agree it is a shame that in recent years the kits tend to lend themselves to a narrower range of outcomes. I think my child like brain could however still very much fashion this kits 800 plus parts into any number of interesting toys. If it feels like you have touched a nerve, at risk of stating the obvious, Lego was and still is so many peoples beloved childhood toy, giving it a poor review relative to a 'real' RC car might always have proved a little controversial. Your new mission sir, should you choose to accept it, is to build a Lego Car that 'does' perform like say a 'Tamiya Grasshopper'. If successful, perhaps Lego will adopt your design ? 🙂 but good luck, as many of us Lego (and RC car) fans have been trying to build a decent RC car out of Lego for flipping decades !
I was lucky enough to get a Lego 8860 for christmas back in 1980, lots of working parts, moving pistons, reclining seats, working 3 speed gearbox, a differential, rear suspension, steering. Mostly from relatively standard lego technic parts. This new thing is a huge step backwards. I feel a "diy RC 8860" project coming on.
@@bleedinghandshughes interesting, I wasn't aware of that one, which came out just after I think. Its the 8865 and added a V config engine, front suspension and retractable headlights. Damn, I can see myself on ebay today trying to relive my youth !!! I think the fact that the car Gav is reviewing here so well fails because its an all in one core unit with a bunch of custom parts specifically for lego car kits. I learnt so much about using standard parts to create complicated mechanics, all via lego. They do an offroad RC buggy too now, at least it actually looks fast and quite usable. Kit 42124
@benfarmer5848 I spent weeks trying to create working full front/steering suspension from stock parts I had, was basically impossible without ball joints the test car had, I did also make a fully functional lego camera
@@bleedinghandshughes sounds like it would be fun and educational to try though ! The 8860 does it using relatively standard rotating flat bits. I actually went "boxart" on mine, replaced the custom "shocks" with the rod and spring non-custom one shown on the box. Its amazing how much detail I remember from 44 years ago, I doubt this "Porsche" will be so fondly remembered in 44 years.
I remember that one, my brother had the earlier chassis with the straight 4 'engine' up front, I had meccano but used his Lego way more, I moved onto RC, he liked football, we're very different! 😂
Thanks for your review of this one. Legos are definitely a totally different animal, and I've never felt they're good for a hobbyist who's into RC and wanting to remote control one. But for a child who wants to try to blend or bridge the two, they're not usually a bad choice. I've always loved my Legos, and am looking forward to Christmas this year, when I should be getting the Formula One that you wanted to build. I'd say go on and do it, I don't think you'll regret the experience if you're doing it just for the fun of it and not comparing it to an RC model.
I agree with most of the comments, Lego is a completely different ball game. It was fun for us AFOLs to watch. 😂 Too slow? Vintage motors, BuWizz, and Gearing can get Lego cars to go so fast parts break in a crash. I build vehicle MOCs, mostly off-road expedition vehicles, but also tracked racers. By the way, all those unmotivated different colours in the 'chassis' we call colour vomit. But many of your comments were spot on.
I have about 17 lego kits to build, i love it. But yes, these are very slow. I have the rally car and the buggy that are remote control. The cats love chasing them 😂 the bigger sets are great to build. Moving engine, working transmission and gears 👌 but lego to me is a static model. And great for kids to build whatever they want 👍
Hobby grade? What aspect of this video gave you the idea I expected a Lego RC to be a hobby grade Tom? I just expected a little more performance over a £20.00 chuck away 1-2MPH RC, that was all.
@@RCKickschannel you literally compared it to a Lunchbox kit lol. Apples and oranges. Not trying to argue. You didn’t like it and that’s fine! Just think you were a bit harsh on this thing
I have the gray and green Lego off-road truck. It was fun to build, too slow to have fun with. But I only buy them for parts to build huge cranes. Just have to build them to speck once. The bulldozer is never being taken apart
Yah you to harsh on this! Its legos!!! I love it! And it's for kids or for a show case. But thanks for doing something different on ur channel. I say keep it coming
You’re comming at it, from the completely wrong angle. LEGO does not advetice it as an RC car, but as a Technic model, which just happens to move. Look at it as a LEGO kit which has been fitted with a small motor, not as a full blown RC, which just happens to be made from LEGO! -do not review it, as you would with a Tamiya kit. This is for fans of LEGO, not someone trying to get into RC.
I recently made the ecto 1, pug le mans and mercedes f1 lego kits. They are OK but I prefer tamiya / kyosho etc kits. I made a 4x4 rc lego kit from a couple of years ago that had suspension and also a rotating hinge in the middle to give more angle when going over rocks.
There is only 1 Lego RC car that is (a bit) faster. All the others are way slower. But since it's Lego, you can modify the rally car your son has and add motors. If you get a Buwizz, it will even be 'fast'. But keep in mind, there's no bearings, so they are not really meant to be driven a lot. And you would have been really disappointed with the F1 car, I certainly was.
No worries, you are not too harsh; this kit was roasted ny more or less every serious Lego reviever. If you want something amazing and actually functional in the brick section, have a look at Cada. ;)
not surprised lego is more to show off what you can push lego to do, not how lego does anything well. It's a fun exploration of mechanics if a bit expensive.
It's the fun of the build as a LEGO - the RC ref must not be confused with "an actual RC Car" LEGO is its own beast with a huge following - and should not be criticised because its not a TT01!
The fun of the build was extremely lacking, that’s one of the aspects that disappointed me the most. That and along with the final car look was weak at best, so it failed in my eyes as a model. With those two big negative aspects along with it being beyond terrible and equivalent to a £20.00 ultra basic RC performance, unfortunately I see no upside to this Lego product. I had hoped it could be a first step into RC for someone introducing the build and run experience to a 8-10 year old child but it didn’t tick any box that a super simple Tamiya Lunchbox couldn’t. If anything it showed me just how good a basic RC build experience is vs something like this.
I enjoyed the video and the concept of getting kids into R/c and engineering through Lego could be great, but that motor unit is rather underwhelming...although if I were 9 years old I would be absolutely thrilled with it!
I won't lie, this was hard to watch, but I made it to the end... just. It's Lego, building something that can move under its own power, not fast nor should it be. At the skatepark all I could hear in my head was "gettin' it now!!" 🙈 now who says that I wonder... 🤔🤭😂
Way too harsh. Like others have commented, this was never designed to compete with hobby grade RC cars. However, as a fan of both, I wouldn't recommend this either if you want an RC car. But if you want a motorized Technic set, then sure. And the build experience isn't supposed to be comparable to a Tamiya kit or any other RC manufacturer. It's consistent w/ Lego Technic which has a huge loyal following. That's why they can charge such extreme prices. And no, it really doesn't need to go much faster, but if you want to make it faster you can. I've put hobby grade electronics in some of my Technic builds. Was fun, but didn't end well. And the folks at BuWizz do this all the time. Check them out, but still don't expect anything close to hobby grade.
Rc lego is for putting around your livingrooom or driveway at max. I don’t know how you managed to slog through that. Lego building is not for me it’s painfull.
You got this one wrong mate. It isn't put out there by Lego as a hobby grade rc car. It's a model that you can drive. So all your expectations of what an rc car should be able to do or look like are not relevant. As far as the design goes...Porsche obviously liked it or they wouldn't have put their name on it. Not fast enough? Rebuild it with some real rc parts. Show us how Lego should have done it...😜
Lego parts are big in comparison to scale, doing something thats fast, has suspension and is small is basically impossible and for bigger cars it flexes way to much. the example that you mentioned is around a 10th scale and suspenion is normal in lego for that scale, however the porsche is a smaller car with rc system and all three dont combine
I guess if your a 'Lego minded person', it'll be amazing to have an Lego RC... but at that speed and the sheer horror of crashing it and rebuilding... that excitement will soon expire and it'll end up a shelf queen (or joker) 😂 Great video Gav either way ;-)
Oh dang. I have a Lego Technic F1 to build. My sister bought it for me. Smaller than the one pictured though. I really loved Lego and still do a bit. I dunno though, the recent kits I've built seem to just irritate me.
quick fact for you, Lego are the worlds largest tire manufacturer, producing over 700 million tires per year! I have to be honest, the Lego RC Buggy is worse, the control is shocking. 🤯 😂😂
Lego is not designed to be like an rc car. Most people add more and more motors to make a functioning crane or whatever. There are some Lego motors that are quite fast that run with mind storm robotic legos. Motors are much better. Most legos are built that way, they have to have a base to start with in order to allow more parts. If you build this like a real car you won’t have enough base to build off or
Sure, if you don't mind a terrible build experience as its just a blob box until you finally bolt on car shape skin parts at the end, twinned with a final look nothing like the actual car. To top these major issues it had zero performance as an RC car to the point it falls below every toy grade RC car ever made and sold. If that's cool to you, well spend your money and enjoy your product.
Ha would love to see you tackle LEGO RC buggy instead since the design is pretty close to classic Tamiya design. Also would like to add that i personally wanted to get one as addition to my collection but seeing the pricepoint i might as well get the real rc cars lol
Got to say I love lego sets and when you announced this build I kind of wondered if you were going to try and adapt a standard lego kit with an rc motor, esc and servo kit, would be interesting to see if that could be done with one of the big F1 kits, maybe by removing the "engine".
@RCKickschannel I've had a look at my 2 F1 lego kits and there is definitely the room to fit an electric motor in but would be a bit tighter making the room for the rest of the electronics and a battery, also I wonder how well the lego gears would hold up🤔.
What can we say, someone had to do it .. its all part of life's rich texture .. and you have learnt something .. On a more serious note, what onboard camera do you use or would recommend? I am keen to get a camera view for my 1:14 Tamiya Trucks, I guess its called and FPV ?? I have no experience, hence the question. Any info / help would be appreciated. Keep up the good work ..
@@RCKickschannel Thanks for the info, it looks interesting, is that the type you use for your vids?? thanks as always for you dedication and sharing your info/vids.
Lego has lost its core reason.. A box of bit's to use your imagination to build anything. Now you spend £735 for a Millennium Falcon with probably £1.50's (if not less)worth of injection moulded plastic. And that's it, nobody is going to split that set up to make anything else.
Yep, this strategy has been extremely financially lucrative for Lego as the production costs vs retail price is massive, especially with kits focused towards older collectors. It’s amazing to think Lego is owned by a single family 🤯
It’s Lego Which can drive not an rc lego car I built the top gear one had 3 gears drove off my phone pretty cool very slow though ok got fun in the kitchen for 5 mins!
The rc part of the car is a gimmick. The main selling point is the building, displaying, and interactibility their sets have. Not with performance in mind. Legos are a different animal in the hobby space.
Now let's see your rc cars disassembled to many pieces and be used to make into something totally different to whatever you want like a mech, a spaceship or whatever you want it to be. It's a brick that runs. Let's see some rc's that runs fast becomes many bricks for other builds. :-) Good advice though not to buy these if you're into real rc's.
Lefo will never go fast as if you crash it more than 3mph you will be there for hours rebuilding it. I habe many model's, these are my only shelf queesn not my RC cars.
Its lego, you build it and put it on a shelf. As to you saying it will brake if you were to hit something with it going a bit faster, that is wrong, lego never brakes, parts just fall of. ;)
Sorry, normally enjoy your videos but this is lego not an rc car that is made for driving round a track. No younger kid would have this as a stepping stone into rc. Comparing apples and oranges.
The car does look like a disappointing build! It is not even a driveable "model" by definition. There are no "model" details. Only the outer skin and stickers are the only parts that are modeled after the car it is supposed to resemble. To me , it looks like a bad version of a Nissan GT-R or a 3rd generation Mitsubishi Eclipse. I am a huge Lego fan and some of their kits are awesome. This one is not one of the awesome ones....
You're trying to compare a toy with a model. You're always going to be disappointed. Lego is building for fun. Yeah it moves a little, but to be honest this is no intended for RC enthusiasts. Many of their other motorised models make a lot better use of motors than this.
🤦🏼🤦🏼, I really don’t see the point of this video 🤦🏼, Lego is a totally different animal from proper rc cars, I’m not sure what you was expecting 🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼
Sorry but I have to say, you saying “don’t go near this” is ridiculous..your comparison between this Lego set and an actual rc kit like tamiya etc is equally ridiculous. Lego is a long standing brand that makes some amazing sets but it’s Lego you honestly can compare them. Very disappointed in your opinion and views.
Sorry to say but I think you totally missed the point of this video my friend. I was not talking about Lego as a whole, but just this single kit. Yes, some Lego builds are really good and engaging, this was not the case with this individual kit as the build experience was rubbish. I was not comparing this kit directly with a Tamiya RC, I was looking to see if this would make a good first step into RC before getting a dedicated RC kit like a Tamiya Lunchbox. I think the confusion is coming from my comment on how bad it was at the RC aspect and it performed like a £20 toy grade RC. Due to the bad build experience, rushish RC aspect and the overall look of the finished car, I don't think it would be a good fit for someone looking to get a younger child into RC. I personally feel you might as well just get a basic Lunchbox to start with, that's all.
10+ Lego for a youngster? Please stay away from Lego. This was very awkward to watch, and your comments are embarrassing, but maybe this is the sort of content you are going for. Oh and your sons car very nice not a cheap kit ether dosen't look like what ever it's supposed to be that dosen't turn with an RC or drive by RC ye know the one ye actually have to push around that is just not sitting on the shelf where as this Technic set can move and turn thru the power of RC. NO False high-speed claims it's fkn Lego. Keep this up and you may as well review barbies RC car or an RC Christmas train set.
Na, it looked a total mess. The back was OK but the sides, doors and front didn’t. So many better Lego kits of cars available. It wasn’t fun to build either, especially when compared to the other Lego car my Son built.
No, I’m pretty sure my experience with this Lego kit was a bad build experience, mixed with a finished car that looks nothing like what it was based on, twinned with a totally pointless RC aspect.
The Lego hobby is a whole other animal. I love them!

There are some Lego motors that are quite fast that run with mind storm robotic legos. Motors are much better. Most legos are built that way, they have to have a base to start with in order to allow more parts. If you build this like a real car you won’t have enough base to build off or
Did you not see the other Lego car I showed in the video?
Its very cool, everything you said about it is wrong. Its great for kids just getting into rc and lego.
Sure, if you don't mind a terrible build experience as its just a blob box until you finally bolt on car shape skin parts at the end, twinned with a final look nothing like the actual car. To top these major issues it had zero performance as an RC car to the point it falls below every toy grade RC car ever made and sold. If that's cool to you, well spend your money and enjoy your product.
you should just drop the motors from the porsche into the other car, problem sorted!
Ha would love to see you tackle LEGO RC buggy instead since the design is pretty close to classic Tamiya design.
Also would like to add that i personally wanted to get one as addition to my collection but seeing the pricepoint i might as well get the real rc cars lol
Dude, u poisoned me. Make me search me lego porsche 911 rsr to mod into RC. Guess what, found it here in youtube to do one. Dang it.. 😅
I still have my 12 v train from 1986 and it still runs. Thats peak lego for me. This is just a bit rubbish 🙂
The Lego trains are great
A proper rc kit would be easier for a little kid.
Got to say I love lego sets and when you announced this build I kind of wondered if you were going to try and adapt a standard lego kit with an rc motor, esc and servo kit, would be interesting to see if that could be done with one of the big F1 kits, maybe by removing the "engine".
I think if you glued all the parts together, you could come up with something
@RCKickschannel I've had a look at my 2 F1 lego kits and there is definitely the room to fit an electric motor in but would be a bit tighter making the room for the rest of the electronics and a battery, also I wonder how well the lego gears would hold up🤔.
Looks like you have to combine the two for the next video 😜
is this a new spin off channel starting? Lego Kicks?
Na, I was just interested to see if this could be a good first step into RC before getting a kit. I was wrong lol
@@RCKickschannel put a 6 cell lipo in it!
Buwizz!!!!!
I would take a look at the Insta 360 go 2
@@RCKickschannel Thanks for the info, it looks interesting, is that the type you use for your vids?? thanks as always for you dedication and sharing your info/vids.
Sounds like you coming at this from to much of an RC angle. It’s just a Lego build that moves basically. But I enjoyed watching nonetheless 👍
Do 8s conversion
It must be on 50%, where's the switch? 😂
I thought it was another TT02 !!!!!
In fairness, this is a Lego that is also an RC... They've never really been able to make a truly great RC but thats not really what it was made for.
The rc part of the car is a gimmick. The main selling point is the building, displaying, and interactibility their sets have. Not with performance in mind.
Legos are a different animal in the hobby space.
I nearly fell off me chair when I see the Bugatti and McLaren price £330. The Porsche is £150 and still not worth it.
No it’s Lego first and RC is just a feature. It’s not meant to be quick. Your building techno not an rc kit.
Maybe I just expected it to look better, drive better and have a better car like build experience like the other Lego car
As to you saying it will brake if you were to hit something with it going a bit faster, that is wrong, lego never brakes, parts just fall of. ;)
Put max10 in it lol
3S it baby
Electronics upgrade?
An rc car it is with most 1/10 cars. The chassis is a flat piece of plastic with holes in it😅 it's not a toy
What was you expecting, it’s for children in door running really, your way to harsh on it.
Sorry, normally enjoy your videos but this is lego not an rc car that is made for driving round a track. No younger kid would have this as a stepping stone into rc. Comparing apples and oranges.
😎👍👍👏👏❤️🇨🇦
I can't believe you didn't sniff the tires. Unforgivable! Unsubscribed! 😁 Just kidding!
This one is not one of the awesome ones....
no no no 😭😭😭😭😭😭
You're trying to compare a toy with a model. You're always going to be disappointed. Lego is building for fun. Yeah it moves a little, but to be honest this is no intended for RC enthusiasts. Many of their other motorised models make a lot better use of motors than this.
🤮
First!
The weather is very nice tho.
You wasnt. Your comment was 32mins ago, mine was 36mins ago ❤
Timestamps changed... your were 1st haha
👎👎👎
Worst video you've done. Completely missed the point. It's fun. The final thing looks a lot like the real body. You play with toys, too, don't forget.
Na, it looked a total mess. The back was OK but the sides, doors and front didn’t. So many better Lego kits of cars available. It wasn’t fun to build either, especially when compared to the other Lego car my Son built.
I’ve been collecting Legos for over 40 years and have a massive collection. I think you’re missing the point of Lego altogether.
No, I’m pretty sure my experience with this Lego kit was a bad build experience, mixed with a finished car that looks nothing like what it was based on, twinned with a totally pointless RC aspect.
