Jimi Hendrix had a guitar. John Coltrane had a saxophone. Giorgio Moroder had a synthesizer. J. Dilla had an MPC.
Obama had herpes
That should be on a tshirt 💾
Although I think his equipment may have changed to include pro tools and a ‘boss’ sampler by donuts 🍩
Still it’s a great quote
They basically said this comment in the new video about J Dilla lmao
ze zyntheziser
If this doesn't make you want to flip a sample, you have a cold heart
fr just wish i could one day make a flip to this lvl this is really peak sampling and my fav/ what i think is the best flip oat
@@benthosundercover7916 Yea bro. When I think about my computer and all the magic I get out of my hundreds of plugins, it's just humbling to know how much Dilla was getting out of basically just an SP1200, an MPC 3000 and a stack of records. Next level, bro.
I know nothing of flipping or anything I just love j dilla, but it seems incredibly fun and cool
Such chopping habilities are light years out of my reach.
@@thechrissguy naw brother. Not if you really want to do it
and JD did it on an mpc 3000 with no wav visuals. all chopped by ear which makes it even more genius.
Nigmatics actually he used an sp303
Sahil Jyoti you’re right, this is off of Donuts, so 303. Crazy!
@@Nigmatics yea, thats even more crazy lol
ruclips.net/video/JeabWifppgI/видео.html
I love this video where 9th Wonder paying homage
@@sahiljyoti5770 bro the fact he did this on a 303 just puts it in a different spectrum of genius and difficulty, what a legend
The Jimi Hendrix of hip-hop.
I really love that comparison wow
facts my man
Fun fact DOOM called subroc hip hop hendrix on Kon karne
Everybody knows Subroc is the hip hop Hendrix haha
Yop!!!!!
4 treal!!
Astral League!
probably the most impressive thing about this flip is that it don't just sound like random chops thrown together and it actually sounds melodic. If you put a low pass filter over it, you can hear a new bassline made from the sample chops with small bass notes under them. It's insane bro
I know I love that funky bassline, that never existed on the original track.
Fr (I have no clue of what you just said)
Bro reading this is like reading another language. I wish I knew more
@@jumpropemfjust to summarize it for you:
The original sample had a cool ass bassline going on, but when Dilla chopped it all up, He ended up making a whole new bassline with those chops thrown in together.
That's like... the whole point
J Dilla being a drummer really shows in this beat flip, he literally is drumming the samples and fills in the gaps with the rest of the song so his drums don't always fall on the same beat its pure fucking genius. Dude just wanted to drum.
Yup
Well i don't think he was just thinking about the drums, but yeah, that's a big part of it
I like how with alot of his beats, the sample starts with the drum, regardless of when the melody or bass comes in
@@eduardchirica8139 Exactly the bassline fits too.
@@SomePersonOnRUclips The baseline is already in the song he sampled. He is playing the chops with whateva came with it
It breaks my heart that JD did this song to say don't cry for him to his brother and mom :'(
The whole album is a farewell letter. "Is death real?"
@@joesap91 nice dilla reference
word?
@@joesap91especially the last few tracks on it, yoh can definitely tell it is
@@joesap91BROOO WTFFFF I THOUGHT HE WAS SAYING “ITS THAT REAL”
Old man here wanting to share something about this. I really feel I have to.
Its already nutty having these kind if channels breaking down samples in visual form. You can tell Dilla really saw things different.
But what blew my mind more was when I started to make beats, we didn’t have many references of youtube like this to learn about chopping etc. Heck, knowing what sample someone used was hard as hell.
When I finally found samples Dilla used during his Fantastic album and donuts, I put them in my MPC, and almost reversed engineerd his patterns.
I was floored, because by doing this you really start to understand what was going on in his head.
Tracklib is one of my fav channels which I wish was around when I started to love hip hop in the 90s.
But that being said, I implore all young beat makers: Really try to figure out yourself how guys like Premier, Dilla, Pete Rock, or even newer producers like Hit Boy, J Cole, and stereotypes etc flip their samples before you look up how they do it.
I had to do this because we didn’t have a choice back then, but looking back, not only was it fun, but you really start to understand what your favorite producers like to do!
Love this comment! There is so much information seconds away from finding out what sample was used in which track. Im glad there are a lot of amazing new producers out there learning and inspired by Dilla and some of the greats just by listening and checking out their techniques here on youtube.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I really enjoyed your comment. gonna try this out. thanks for your knowledge!
Real talk. Took me hours to get something resembling this...Even with the video.
This would have taken me years without Tracklib. I have no doubt.
Ive watched almost every breakdown of this segment from all producers...just looking at the chops he used and HOW it was used is beyond alot of heads out here....makes sense why Qtip pulled him in...tip was there already but didnt reach the stringent parts of chopping records. like you stated, the breakdown of sampling makes you understand the producers mindset a bit more and if you still cant quite reach it (understand) then THAT detail ALONE is the GENIUS in the mind of the creator. Whats even greater is that he didnt leave any secret tips for ones to follow. Look how long it took for ANYONE, let alone Tracklib to find out not only what songs were used but the PIECES
My jaw dropped the first time I heard this and it dropped again seeing a visual... The fact that he did this with just an mpc 3000 blows my mind
I heard it was done with an sp 303 which is even more unbelievable
a legendary producers tool, madvillain, donuts and recently scaring the hoes@@flowerponyrecord
Dilla makes me want to simultaneously chop a sample and give up beatmaking at the same time
Do the former. Only Dilla will ever be Dilla, but only you can be you. So go do that
@@tracklib thanks, keep being dope tracklib we appreciate u 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Tracklib, if Grammy's were awarded for youtube contributions to producers/music nerds/hip hop heads, you would be a lock. Keep doing what you're doing, you're a blessing to the music lover community.
FACTS
Frrr
This is a great visual. Truly one of the greatest to ever flip samples
Yes excactly. Remember, he had to do everything by his ears only
Sounds almost like he sampled the drum hits while ignoring everything else and it came together beautifully
thats exactly what he did
I heard he created that in the hospital 4 his mom. Truly amazing!
ironic how a song called dont cry makes me damn near break out in tears. arguably the greatest sample flip of all time
0:24 In my opinion the best sample pileup ever!
Same
Probably the greatest sample flip of all time to me
The Way he Flipped Samples was so Advanced . I swear this man Mastered it . He was a Genius
watching this gave me goosebumps. and that he did this without the luxuries of sophisticated DAWs and/or sample-centric applications.. truly ahead of his days. dilla could never get enough love-all praise!!
Right like now days Daws auto chop and include the visual waves to fine tune the chops and this man literally dissected everything he sampled and surgically fine tuned and created master pieces yes indeed way ahead of his time long Live J.d.
nah he made it in protools lol
Having the ear to put different parts of one song together is truly amazing
Best sample based beat ever
Being alive when J dilla made donuts is like being around when the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence
In that case I would've been born on April 1776
PHUCK THE DECLORATION OF INDEPENDENCE!!!! LETS GO TANK!!!
This shits gives me the chills everytime but where’s that “little brother” by black star visual I NEED to see the microchops on that
J Dilla and Daft Punk are geniuses of sampling, different in their own way.
And people say sampling is easy
i wouldn’t say it’s hard, it’s mostly when people say it doesn’t take skill to sample
It depends who's sample😁😁😁
To make great samples like rza, kanye west, madlip, jdilla, a.m.m., you need skill
@@ericfurst6091 havoc is also fire with sampling
@@ericfurst6091 don't forget 9th Wonder
best hip hop flip of all time
W same
one of the greatest hip hop tracks of all time
Literally God level sampling❗️
This is insane. This backs up why I think it’s my favorite dilla beat
I always tear up to it
Not many musicians reach this level of genius, this is generational talent.
Well I'm crying dammit, miss Dilla.
More J Dilla breakdowns please
I love how the intro is unchanged and then Dilla was like "now watch this shit"
Can't believe i watched this breakdown more than 50 times
Oh same bro!
Amazing. I’ve been looking for a visual to explain how insane his flip was, this is great.
I know right I had It in my mind how the chops looked the very first time I heard this joint .
The closest I’ve seen to this is in vox’s earworm series: “How J. Dilla humanized his MPC 3000”
I hope they do the "light up a spliff" part on donuts - that's no where in the original song - he chops the vocals to make new words !!!!
I know I can't even do this on serato sample.
This is now my favorite RUclips channel. Thank you
Look at how God blessed us all with amazing gifts. Dilla truly had a passion for the art of beat making. Keep shining and be a light to others through your gifts, giving God the glory. Be blessed yall!
This is sheer madness.
I just discovered this channel and immediately searched for a Dilla breakdown. Was not dissapointed 👍🙌
Dilla lives on forever!! Rest In Power
I'm eating a donut right now listening to this.
i'd be tearin up
This is probably my all time favorite Dilla beat. It just gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. RIP Legend.
yep
the GOAT
J Dilla Changed my life
Absolutely mind boggling
Greatest to ever do it, rest in beats
Rest in peace legend 🙏🙏❤
fun fact, j dilla and nujabes were born on the exact same day of the exact same year… february 7, 1974.
I think there’s a video of 9th wonder showing a classroom full of people this song and how dilla chopped it on the mpc. Y’all Should def check it out. 🔥
he used an SP 303, even more impressive.
Donuts for me is one of those albums where I notice something new every listen
this is fucking insane
never gets old
Jay in the Hospital like "Aw yeah, let me make a quick sample beat rn"
the best to ever do it !!
It's a tradition to come watch this masterpiece at least once a day
thats some serious chop
whoever edited this is as genius as that flip gawdamn
I really wish i had the chance to meet Dilla
😔😢🥺 and for some reason i get emotional when i hear this track…its like he telling folks dont cry cause he passing away slowly. It just very heartfelt
R.I.P dilla man 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
This is the Perfection of Madness in the best way possible
Everytime I hear and listen to DILLA tracks my mouth drops then my head starts to nod cuz it knows respect ✊🏽, R.I.P.
thats why he is the goat
This is what we all aspire to.
Damn! Dilla was a fucking genius.
R.I.P J Dilla
Wow, this is incredible all of those chops and he made it sound so smooth!!
The longer you make music the more this one hits.
It's ridiculous how good of a ear he had for samples, you could've given Dilla a Merzbow record and he would've given you soul.
This sample breakdown series is the best on your channel! Definitely love them!
This the greatest musical example of GENIUS.... RIP....
Damn this is true art, this made me cry, but i try don't cry.
I get chills on all of these breakdowns jheeez
So useful, you gained a new fan thanks so much for this!!
This idea is great, love the visual
00:24 makes me drop a tear mañe thinkin bout J D I ain't talkin Jermaine dupri I'm talkin James D Yancey 🍩🙏

Chopping is a science… or a feeling.
Please do more of those! This is awesome!
Crazy how people hate on artist that sample. This is so creative and also giving homage to the artist being used.
Dilla was amazing.
The precision and attention to detail in these breakdowns is amazing
I saw this video like a year ago and an instagram post brought me back here. Great job
It's beautiful. I've looked at this for five hours now
This is such an amazing channel
