My favourite song of the 80s. This song was like a comfort blanket at a difficult time. The smiths songs saved many and were the story of my adolescent life.
It's funny you mentioned that. I just commented last night that Twenty One Pilots is like a warm reassuring hug when you are having a bad day. I'm almost 50, so The Smiths and The Cure were like that for me back in the day.
I graduated high school in 1980 and started getting into music like this. Peter Gabriel, XTC, the Cure, Kate Bush the Smiths and then Morrissey solo music. This is some good shit man.
Great reaction! You kind of got The Smiths in a nutshell, some of the lyrics are sad or depressing but the music itself is mostly upbeat. LOVE The Smiths, I'm so glad you reacted to them!
This has been voted one of the best pop songs of all time. Its definitely one of my favorites. Sad, beautiful and somehow weirdly hopeful all at the same time.
YES, you totally get The Smiths. The discord between Morrissy’s mournful lyrics and Marr’s jangly, upbeat guitar is what made them great. Try Cemetery Gates or Girlfriend In A Coma for other perfect examples of this style.
Also Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others, The boy with the thorn in his side.... Not gonna lie I love almost all Smiths songs. I add Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others because. "Send me the pillow The one that you dream on Send me the pillow The one that you dream on And i'll send you mine" Has stuck with me since I first heard it.
After recognizing this song, I gotta repeat, The Smiths "How Soon Is Now." Far more dramatic, musically. Your ears will buy you flowers and take you out for a fancy dinner. TRUST ME on this.
The extended version of How Soon Is Now. Also, try A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours, Frankly Mr. Shankly, Big Mouth Strikes Again, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish...so many awesome Smiths songs to listen to!

It's a song that I just can't resist having on repeat sometimes. One of favorites from The Smiths. The lyrics are a bit dark, but they are profoundly beautiful. That feeling of maybe being depressed but not wanting to wallow in it and instead be reminded of the liveliest atmosphere. Just to go out and try to enjoy the moments that could only be shared with your friends. Or the beautiful sentiment of dying by someone's side being okay because it's someone you love and care about deeply. Kinda romantic really. And the music...speaks for itself. I always loved the bass on this one and it's tone. Awesome bass line.
Alienation rarely sounds so bittersweet as it does with The Smiths. Those flute sounds sure push this song to the next level vibe. When you're ready for more from The Smiths, check out "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" or "This Charming Man" for super-smooth bass lines, "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "What Difference Does It Make", or "Still Ill" for slick driving guitar jingle-jangles, and "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" for making two minutes feel like five in a good way.
Your reaction is on point and on fire! The juxtaposition of the sad lyrics and and the upbeat music makes this one fantastic. A great song of teenage angst, discovery of love, crushes, fear of rejection, and so much more. "...To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die". If this isn't love, then I don't know what is. This song makes me happy and puts me in a great mood whenever I hear it. The flute and and strings are next-level!!! A roommate of mine was a Smiths fanatic and introduced me to them back in 1988 when I was twenty. I had no idea back then how great they were. I certainly do now.
The Smiths had already split by the time I got into them.....but I was converted FOR LIFE! The lead singer Morrissey is a lyrical genius - he tackles all those dark things a lot of singers won't, but he normally puts a humorous edge on it. He was the voice for the shy, the misfits, the awkward, the 'I don't belong' people - he made them feel less alone in the world through his lyrics. He went solo shortly after the split and is still an icon, releasing new music & playing sold out gigs due to his legendary status. I have seen him over 20 times in concert and it's like a religious experience - his fans are intense! He is known for being unapologetic and refuses to play the fame game for record companies, which normally leads to him being dropped by the label - as if they think he cares! You should react to this video of him playing the Hollywood Bowl to see the amount of fans that NEED to touch him by invading the stage: ruclips.net/video/vPij63mSH30/видео.html Or 'Everyday Is Like Sunday', the 100,000 crowd out-sung him: ruclips.net/video/A6WEeM7dqLQ/видео.html They don't call him the 'MOZZIAH' for nothing! He's a staunch animal rights activist and The Smiths album, 'Meat Is Murder' is often cited for the biggest shift to vegetarianism. He refused to play his sold out gigs at Madison Square unless McDonalds agreed to close whilst he was there - and they DID! 😆 Another great track you should react to about police corruption is 'Ganglord': ruclips.net/video/8Gowz4V1c-0/видео.html At his concerts, he plays a collage of footage showing police brutality at it's worst. One of the most unique, talented and REAL artists out there today. THANK YOU FOR YOUR REACTION!!!👏👏👏 PS Other Smiths songs - How Soon Is Now, Bigmouth Strikes Again, Still ill, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, Nowhere Fast, Panic, Girlfriend In A Coma, Vicar In A Tutu....so many songs....!
I fuckin love the man! I'm 16 and got into the Smiths originally a couple years ago when I heard 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' on the radio. From then on I bought Meat Is Murder and that's when I found Mozza's solo work. My first album of his was Low In High School and I've got the whole collection of The Smiths and Morrissey now. I saw him for the the first and , so far, only time in London last year just before lockdown and didn't stop shaking for the first half of it (too starstruck at the time). Hopefully the first of many!
@@lukerawle4220 There speaks a person with "incredibly good taste"! I'm almost jealous of your road to discover his full back catalogue - B-sides as well - the Mozziah simply cannot write a bad song - it's impossible! And how dare lesser people criticise him for his views & opinions - FUCK THEM - they aren't worthy!🤬 And the LIES the press print about him are ridiculous - just cos he hates the media and refuses to play by their rules - just makes me respect him even more! Would it make you jealous if I told you I've touched his hand? He took a letter from me when he played Omagh (NI) - I was front row on the barrier (as always) - the letter was about how he inspired me to be a voice for animals - I have worked in animal welfare for 20 years professionally and I help run an animal sanctuary in my spare time, so asked if he'd consider being our President. He put the letter in his jeans back pocket - I was crying with AWE! LOL! I didn't get a response, but knew I wouldn't as he is asked by EVERY animal charity to work with them, plus he already does so much for animals💕 BUT I know he reads letters given to him, so that was good enough for me!😄 I also have a small shred of his shirt from about 10 years ago when he played Dublin - he took it off and threw it right at me - I was clutching it, but about 10 others bounced in grabbing it as well, so a tug of war ensued - I was trying so hard to rip a bit off it! But there was a burly suedehead and a BIG retro 50's girl beside me who ended up having an actual fist fight over it and security had to step in - but she ran away with the shirt almost in tact - LUCKY BITCH!😂 He also handed me a white rose in Dublin whilst singing 'Irish Blood, English Heart' 😍 I promptly put it in my Mozipedia as soon as I got home to press & preserve it - still have it. I also have his autograph from when he did an album signing in Belfast for his album 'Southpaw Grammar'; got a couple of brilliant pics that day when I snuck into the press enclosure, before being trailed out by security! @@kittenklub1964 OMG, I'm so jealous right now! That's mental! I hope to touch that sacred hand one day.🙏 Yes fuck the media and all the lies they tell about him. Can't believe how they can call him a 'racist' and they wouldn't if they knew the first thing about him. How could he possibly be a racist if he donated £75,000 to the Love Music, Hate Racism event when it was in peril saying "this is a historic event spreading an important, anti-racist message... it must be allowed to go ahead. This is something I am committed to". If anyone listened to his lyrics they'd know he's the complete opposite of a racst. He even cvered the Bob Dylan track 'Only A Pawn In Their Game" speaking out against racism in the USA, which Dylan himself sung in front of the civil rights activists. I'm in the minority where I actually prefer his later solo work to his earlier stuff, (but of course, it's all perfect). I couldn't tell you my favorite albums or songs as there all different and brilliant in their own way but at the moment, I'm listening a lot to 'You Are The Quarry', 'Years Of Refusal', 'I Am Not A Dog On A Chain' and 'Bona Drag'. It's nice to speak with someone who actually has a good taste in music as, at my age, I go to school with most people listening to rap and modern shite, (some of which is good, and when I say some I mean very little).
The melodic phrasing of Morrissey is so unique: the resolution of the melody: “I haven’t got one, da da da, oh I haven’t got one”. He has these idiosyncratic vocal fills that are just brilliant. One of my favorites is in “What difference does it make”-the way he holds the note and rolls/descends.
One of my favourite Smith's songs. Morrisey was our pub (Railway Inn, Hale, Manchester), owned by our family since 1984, on October 10th 2021. He was my idle as a kid growing up in Manchester in the 80's but I couldn't be their to greet him as I was sat by my mothers bedside as she passed away the same evening. Mum was a massive part of the local community (President and the Chamber of Commerce, member of the local civic society, Landlady of the biggest pub in the area, key member of the local church, volunteer in the local charity shop etc etc) hence why the title of this song has taken on such a bigger meaning (Mum's light will never go out). Hopefully he will visit again one day in the future and I will get to meet him.

Not my style of music but with that said, it shows you the diversity of 80’s music and how much talent was out there. You could appreciate the talent even if the music was out of your style.
aaahh The Smiths. where to start ? Emotion, Pathos, Humour, Guilt, Love, Repressed Feelings, Growing up, all that stuff and more. the full gamut of teenage angst. Morrisseys lyrics take you through all of that. Johnny Marr's Guitar work, and songwriting arrangement added tons and tons. this band dominated the British alternative scene in the 80s. Other songs to consider would be How Soon is Now, Nowehere Fast, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, The Queen is Dead, there's loads more. this is a very deep band, and a very deep hole bru. as for Morriseys' gloomy outlook. Half the time he's being ironic, tong in cheek, never ever make the mistake to thing that he's all doom and gloom. far from it. he's passionate. thats a whole different riff. You got it man., You got it
The happy/sad duality of The Smiths is what they were all about. Morrissey and Marr wrote their parts entirely separately (Marr dropped a cassette of the finished music to Morrissey), and the result is the almost random clash of the two contributions. Musicians, something sad to say will instinctively pick up their acoustic guitar and strum a D minor (the saddest of the keys). Given downbeat music they will pen a sad tale. Uniquely, Marr never wrote a word and Morrissey couldn't play an instrument, so they were able to shun that convention and create a more dynamic mix - the upbeat music brought out Morrissey's defiance, humour and sense of the bittersweet. Conversely, Marr avoids emoting through his guitar (despite his proficiency he firmly rejects guitar solos), instead giving Morrissey powerful structures to hang his words on. However, really relating fully to the lyrics is probably not for party people.
It really sounds sums up living in the north in the 80's / 90's mainly 80's. It's a slightly upbeat song that was basically an oxymoron of the time. The smiths really tells the story of the North of England in a way that makes sense to people in the north of England. I can't speak for Yorkshire or the North East of England. It made sense here though as the north of England has always been neglected by the south and it's so true today.
This wouldn't be the song that I'd recommend to listen to for someone who has never heard of the smiths. I like this song but its not one of their hits. You should listen to "this charming man" by the smiths - everyone loves that song
The Smiths had chart success but as far as "hits" go they weren't a commercial band and their songs weren't played on commercial radio. They had a huge fan base and following though (and even after their split and over 30 years later they are are loved by many more) There Is a Light That Never Goes Out is one of their most loved songs, so is How Soon Is Now which incidentally, was originally released as a B-Side on the single William It Was Really Nothing, it was later released as a single after their record company realized the fans were going nuts over it. It's hard to name hits when it comes to The Smiths because they really don't have hits, they have GREAT songs. (This Charming Man was a chart success and definitely deserves a reaction!)
@@oscillatewildly6553 Oh well i don't recall saying any song was on a billboard chart - I guess for you a hit has to be on some mainstream chart. I was there in the 80s when they were releasing albums and I'm well aware of their popularity and the fact they weren't main stream necessarily.
Morrissey (the lead singer) usually wrote the lyrics and then Johnny Marr (the lead guitarist) wrote the music which is why the lyrics on a lot of their songs are pretty depressing but the music is upbeat and cheerful lol.
Not usually, always. The lyrics aren't always sad or depressing, often times they're sarcastic or downright funny. Even this song which sounds melancholic employs a fair bit of slapstick humour.
The Smiths are one of the all time great bands.....but I will say they are somewhat of an “acquired taste” & they aren’t for everyone. The Queen Is Dead was voted the greatest LP ever in England! High praise from a Country with the Beatles, the Stones, The Who, Led Zep, Elton John & many other great Musical artists. The Smiths have a ton of great songs imo & it’s def. a rabbit hole worth exploring. Some song ideas: The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, Panic, This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now...that’s for starters. Morrissey, the lead singer, has a bunch of great solo songs too you should check out.
I'm glad to finally see another human experiencing the disparity between the tone of the track and the darkness of the lyrics. This record changed my life. I gave up on heavy metal for The Smiths

This charming man
“This charming man” please
Not my style of music but with that said, it shows you the diversity of 80’s music and how much talent was out there. You could appreciate the talent even if the music was out of your style.
The Smiths, The Cure, kings of happy sounding sad songs.
Love your reaction!
Glad you enjoyed
I second How Soon Is Now for your next Smiths song!
aaahh The Smiths. where to start ?
You got it man., You got it
You forgot Cheeky, mate 😉
Candlebox--You or Cover Me or Far Behind, great band.
I Know it's Over - The Smiths
Pls!
Glorious song 💕
The Smiths were amazing 🙌🏻
Fina-fucking-lee someone else has started a journey with the smiths
This Charming Man, That Joke isn’t Funny Anymore, or Nowhere Fast. All 3 are good second listens
How Soon is Now is THE BEST song ever made!
He 1986 they 8 albums and smith’s and solos albums great song
Bruh, The Smiths are fire 🔥 Great reaction! 👍🏼 Check out Big Mouth Strikes Again!!!
Sad lyrics + happy music = The Smiths lol

Check out "Shoplifters of the World Unite" by The Smiths
Wonderful reaction
The Smiths are the most beautifully depressed band. They don't have a single happy song 😁😆
Well, there's Girlfriend in a Coma.
Vicar in a Tutu
You gotta checkout Morrissey "Come Back To Camden"
Great song, well suggested
Great reaction man. Gotta listen to bigmouth strikes again by the smiths.
listen to the whole "the queen is dead" album by the smiths its heat
Morrissey (the lead singer) usually wrote the lyrics and then Johnny Marr (the lead guitarist) wrote the music which is why the lyrics on a lot of their songs are pretty depressing but the music is upbeat and cheerful lol.
Not usually, always. The lyrics aren't always sad or depressing, often times they're sarcastic or downright funny. Even this song which sounds melancholic employs a fair bit of slapstick humour.
@@ravenknight1704 thats all part of Morrisseys personality which is why people love him so much.
Hand in Glove.
I'm glad to finally see another human experiencing the disparity between the tone of the track and the darkness of the lyrics. This record changed my life. I gave up on heavy metal for The Smiths
Manchester, so much to answer for
