  • When the dress you want to wear is too big, and you are in a hurry, the first option is to start sewing from the underarm, down as far as you need to go. Then you turn it inside out and see that the seam is all puckered at the underarm. What happened! Why is it like that. This video explains how you can get it right and it will probably only take you another 2 minutes....

Thank you, thank you. I am just about to do this to my house coat! I am also going to sew the Tie so it doesn't keep coming out of the Loops!

Thank you very much for a very detailed and clear explanation. This really helped me as I was having this "bad finish" on the dresses I was taking in. Thank you again.

Thank you Winifred. I try to create informative videos. It's just me, myself and I doing the filming, editing and uploading. At 64 (on the 6th of this month) I taught myself how to keep up with the world of change. Love it and enjoy doing what I am doing. Cheers

Nice video but I was unable to tell exactly how you did it, I opened the seams at the underarm area and seem to be having difficultly fixing.

Hi. What I am trying to explain here is that the seam needs to be opened out at the underarm so that the SEAM ARE SITTING FLAT. Once that is done, you can start to sew from the top of the underarm seam and sew down the sides taking in however much you need to make it fit you. If you do not unpick the seam and try and sew from the underarm it will catch the fabric on the other side. If you have opened out the seams, now all you have to do is stitch from the top taking it in the amount you need (everyone will be different with the amount taken in) and then overlock off the excess and rejoin the seam at the top. Does that help you?

I use a Janome. Just the basic model. They cost around AUD$400 in Australia. The thing is that doing clothes alterations does not require an industrial machine. Just a normal basic sewing machine that does straight stitch and zig zag. And buttonholes. And just a normal standard overlocker. Clothes alterations is not like dressmaking, or piece work like manufacturing. It is just about taking in or taking up garments.
