Does Reolink support NVR functionality through something outside their own NVR box? Say you have a NAS already and want to setup a drive for this specifically? And would you loose out on their software doing that?
Thank you Paul, great video! I've been using their gear for many years and the cameras are great. Sometimes the software gets a little screwed up with an update but they do fix it. One issue I find is they do not support their hardware for long, meaning it is superseded by new versions fairly quickly and I've found that there are no longer updates for hardware that was bought the year before even though it was bought directly from Reolink.
Mate, I left my synthetic chairs outside last winter and the freezing did a number on the fabric. Recommend slinging them in the garage or at least under a tarp.
If you also add the Reolink cameras to Home Assistant with the ONVIF integration, it gives it even more stuff you can do with it, a lot more in the image and PTZ department. Home Assistant seems to know too and keeps the two integrations under the same roof.
My Zmodo before it died, was twice the size you have there. I could read the tag on my neighbors licence plate from about 200 feet. Boy do I ever miss that camera.
Those things are huge! I am, of course, referring to the RLC-823S2 cameras. I'd have to say that they're definitely in the mindset of "of course they can see your camera and that's part of what makes things secure" school. Clearly, Reolink is also in the "annoy you until you set up the camera" school as well. There's probably something about that in the instructions, but who reads those anyway? The mix camera: I like the idea of combining a zoomed in and zoomed out camera. Often enough there's a large area you want to see and a smaller area that you'd like to really see. This does both at the same time. I'm glad they added in the functionality to quickly find the clips you're looking for. Home Assistant integration: Clearly Reolink and the HA folks have been talking to each other and whatever API HA has to use has everything exposed to it. It's good to see more companies embracing open systems. It makes Home Assistant that much more powerful and makes the users happy. (I can't help but imagine that that has a positive effect on sales, even if it means some folks won't buy their NVR.) I agree that, at first glance, all of this sounds expensive, however, I also agree that, considering the feature sets, it's not nearly as expensive as the competition and it delivers more of those features directly to you without having to go through the cloud. Thanks for a great review of some great products. See you next Saturday.
As a Qnap NAS owner, I’d like to use my NAS as a security camera recording system, but only certain cameras are shown as supported on Qnap website. I bought a Reolink to try out ‘just in case’, and couldn’t get it to work with my NAS. So this experience has prevented me from getting and installing a security camera system. It would help if companies like Reolink tested their cameras with popular NAS software, such as Synology & Qnap and reported on their websites what their cameras work with.
@@TheLDunn1 it's kind of their whole thing. They have an article specifically talking about the benefits of it. Not sure their purely wireless cameras have it though. We're they WiFi?
"Just in the nick of time! One of my Reolink cameras just got water in the connector. Love how you’ve neatly housed all the connections in an outdoor box. Thanks for the tip!
A *really* important difference to note with the old 823A, 823S1 and 823S2... I had the 823A which failed due to water ingress, so I "upgraded" to an S2. Moving from 5x zoom to 16x was great, or so I thought. In reality, the lenses are entirely different and for me, the S2 was unusable. The S2 has a 50' odd degree field of view, which is so incredibly narrow, I couldn't film both cars on the drive at the same time. The S1, like the 823A, has a 110 degree FOV - which captures both cars and most of next door's drive too. Unless your camera is far, FAR away from the primary subject, stick to the S1. You'll only have 5x zoom (which is still incredible), but you'll be able to see more in each frame. Having owned both, I realize the 16x zoom is more a fad than real-world useful. If your subject is close, you won't want to zoom up their nose. If they're far away, they're probably of little interest to you. Also worth noting... Reolink have changed the design in the S series. The reset button is now inside the camera, under the waterproof SD cover. The 823a was a button on the cable which, when wet, constantly reset the camera to factory settings. The supplied waterproof grommet typically failed quickly, hence the redesign. Last thing - unless it's changed *very* recently, doesn't expect full quality in HA. My HA installation only views the sub-stream on my S1's, doorbell and 833A. Still reasonable, but far from 4K quality. It's only the view however, not the recording quality - you can still playback at 4K.
I think it follows the best looking person. It always seems to follow me 🤷♂️ ... in seriousness though, the Duo 3 is sooooo good. I could have happily installed 4 of these!
13:27 As you explained, the Reolink app doesn't show a picture. But if you integrate it into Home Assistant you could make an automation and use the "Camera: Take Snapshot" action when doorbell pressed, person, pet or motion detected etc.. and then send that picture in a HA notification. (Tip: if you want to be able to see the notification picture even when not connected to your home network, use your external domain in the notification action to reference the picture location)
Great video Paul, I've had a Reolink system for about 4 years now and it's fantastic (POE/NVR). You mentioned Rich Text notifications, well I set up a separate gmail account and in the NVR you can have an email notification sent which includes a v still image of the detection, I filter out in the gmail account (inbox filter) all the camera locations to make it easy to distinguish, it's a great way of having a still image but when you need to search within the NVR for playback video it helps with the searching...Reolink have some great kit, BTW the NVR noise it's pretty low and just get it put in a cupboard out of sight (which you should do anyway)...
You can always have homeassistant grab a screenshot of the doorbell when the button is pressed and send that via a notification. I also have homeassistant grab the current state of my front tv, cast live view of cameras for 10 seconds, and then go back to previous state.
Has Reolink finally pulled their heads out of their butts yet, and allowed someone elses camera to work with a Reolink NVR? Every advert I've seen has in bold letters WILL NOT WORK WITH NON REOLINK CAMERAS. ??? I don't mind doing a partial migration, but you're not going to make me bin the dozen other POE cameras I've already got!
@@cognoscenti2011 - Sure, I get that direction of thought, but... I * was * willing to buy one of their NVR's since the software is so so nice (I have 3 other ones, and they're all total crap!). Happy Saturday Paul! I've totally seen those gray packages before...because I've definitely ordered from Reolink before. Also definitely heard that setup message before. That's why I set them up before they went up on the house. Yes, Reolink are camera gods! The only issues I have with them are because I'm too lazy. Both of the cameras I've installed on the back of the house are battery powered, which means I definitely put a solar panel on them. The laziness comes in when I haven't moved the solar panels to where they actually can catch a decent amount of sun, so the battery dies on them. To be fair to myself though...I've got a few physical issues affecting my ability to work on stuff like that.
As mentioned below add to HA via ONVIF as well as your current setup & then begin to throw motion or door contacts into the mix with some automations running on HA. The PTZ camera's can now see & detect events when they are looking other ways via the motion or door contacts, map your PTZ pre-set's to target doors etc when the automation runs. Simple yet so effective!
Paul, I’ve got a Reolink doorbell on HA, I use the LLM Vision integration blueprint to summarise what the camera sees on the notification and it also gives me a snapshot of the door in the notification 😁
If you want to get Rich notifications you can put a snapshot from the camera in a Home Assistant notification, plus pressing/holding it loads the live feed 👌
It amazes me how good home security systems are these days. They quality is better then some professional systems sometimes. I work in a control room with 50 odd cameras and your stuff is on par with some of the gear I use. I have Eufy cams at home and they are good as well. Couldn't afford to change everything now to these though. Plus I loke the wireless versions as easier to install on my property.
The duo 3 sounds interesting seeing its compatable with a home pc. but works out expensive if you have to buy the magic box just to be able to use the camera
Omg hysterical! I feel your pain! I had to get my ladder back out so many times when I set up my ReoLink cameras. 4 of them! Love your videos! Definitely an inspiration for my own HA integration!
Don't apologize for wearing a Starfleet uniform. They say you have to dress for the job you want. Though they still look at me weird at work when I come in with my Ghostbusters flight suit and pack.
With the camera in Home Assistant, can't you get HA to send a notification to your phone via the HA App? If you can get that working, you can then use a VPN on your home network (I have one built into my router) to have your phone access HA as if you are in the house without paying the subscription. Also, all NVRs seem to make noise, either the cooling fan or the mechanical hard drive.
And with the software that is part of the NVR or Home Hub, you should be able to turn on http / https and access it from a browser ( local only ) and access a similar interface. The Windows app itself is quite good; the browser interface is also surprisingly good. Only have had the Home Hub so not 100% on what the NVR brings to the table. There are differences between the NVR and the HOME HUB and Home Hub Pro. Main differences is the amount of included storage, and the number of cameras that can connect. There is also a NVR Wifi version too.
Im just starting into the world of homelabing. Just finished my first build (Ryzen 7 2700x b450 itx and 32gig ram) Out of all the channels ive been watching this is def the funniest and makes it a lot more fun than i thought was possible. Captain Hibert on the USS Home assistant keep it up
Hi Paul. I also have the Reolink doorbell. Through Homeassistant I do get to see who is in front of my door, so that doesn't have to be an elephant in the room. Just make an automation that home assistant will send you a preview.
I want to love reolink but currently my doorbell, hub and chime, all reolink cant be used together, meaning i can only get doorbell notifictions from the hub and the chime is useless
Hey Paul, another great vid , a while back you spoke about the annoying way no door bells give you the function to mute notification temporarily. I stumbled on the notification entity in home assistant of the reolink doorbell. From that I've made a simple automation to mute the doorbell notification for 10 minutes. Then placed a widget on my pixel home screen to quickly activate the automation! works perfectly!
I thought reolink has image notifications of the person moving around with time stamps as the move. Or if this a after the fact feature you download later?
Have been slowly replacing my cameras with Reolink and they’re great. Planning on using the onvif integration instead of their Reolink NVR though. Only downside I’ve seen so far is the doorbell. When you have the feed set to load on an Alexa device with a screen it hijacks the audio so you can’t talk on the app.
I can’t help noticing that this feature is very much backdoor heavy. Not sure if this was a deliberate choice in post, or, if it was the master plan from the start. Touché good sir, touché!
If I was crazy rich I would buy a FLIR camera for at least, 150000 € :-) But for now my Reolink stationary camera have been working non-stop for 5 years up here in northern Norway from freezing cold to hot summers (not much of that) Reolink makes good stuff for an affordable price, It's time to make an upgrade from my old one.
The zoom camera is too narrow on the wide end and they've removed IR blasters from the previous model. TrackMix on the other hand doesn't do well at night.
If you change the cheap fan on the NVR with Noctura 20mm fans (NF-A4x20 FLX) - silence!! If you use email notification (e.g via your email account) you get a snapshot on the event notification. And video of your doorbell event.
I've recently set-up a Reolink NVR and a couple of cameras, and I have to disagree with you Paul about the software. I don't find it easy to scrub through footage at all. Having come from Nest (I'd had enough of the annual subscription and crappy cameras), I was used to being able to scroll through footage and advance or rewind by a few seconds. The Reolink cameras are great, but the software still has a way to go IMHO. Still, I guess that's something that can come with some live updates.
Hang on, there must be a way that you can connect the NVR to wifi or ETH right? Then can you access your home network whilst mobile? Or set up an old phone with an app that watches the screen of your security system to then push notifications upon movement?
I got the twin ptz reolink when it was on offer and it’s good, but it has a massive fail on it when it comes to privacy. I have a neighbour that has their back door facing my house and the place where I want to put the camera means I can see in to their kitchen. Quite rightly the guy objected and in the end I didn’t put the Blink camera up. So bought the reolink because it has a black out feature. Great I thought, but here’s the bit that is a massive fail. The black out box dosnt take in to account the panning and tilting. So you can black out the neighbours house but then just turn the camera and you still lose half of the picture but you’re now pointing at the door with half of the picture so you can see in. Unless the black out feature picks up on the black out privacy side it’s useless. Now waiting for the fixed version of the vandal proof dome camera with zoom to become available and will add that and install the ptz in the back garden.
Thanks. A Reolink system has been on my list for a while now since I suffered a theft. I'm discounting any WiFi systems as they are getting easier to jam.
If you are talking about Deauthing of a Wireless camera by targeting the router, well, there are a number of cameras that support WPA3 which makes deauthing a non-issue. But then and again, any security camera can make a thief pause. While one camera may make a thief pause, more than one has additional benefits.
Yep. I installed cameras on top of a hospital where the police did a demo after and they can zoom in on a person over a mile away in rainy weathet and see the color of a persons eyes.. they also have ai tech in them that can spot one person who is acting differently in a crowd of a few hundred people then record just them while still viewing the field of people.. the cameras are about the size of a basketball with 8 separate cameras inside a bubble. They cost 30 grand each.. record in 40 megapixels all the time with capabilities of recording at 80.. which is unheard of and wr dont have monitors that will show that depth of that many pixels.. i put up 2 of those cameras on the hospitak about 2 years ago..
You just need to have a warehouse to host those two humongous "beasts" on without looking like some kind of category C prison. I think the big Ubiquiti beast is possible the only larger camera.
You can record via FTP, and the cameras have RTSP and onvif 😄 I assume you would then use onvif integration in home assistant rather than Reolink integration
OK, I got three minutes into the video and had to stop… I giggled like a little girl 😂 Bro, you crack me up! It is literally 5:30 in the morning and this has been a great way to start my day! Sending support from across the pond!
I've always had a couple of them kicking about, but after their last doorbell arrived at my house I decided I wanted all Reolink stuff, I am certainly not disappointed!
I'm contemplating buying some more Reolink cameras (probably POE). I have all Eufy cameras currently and love the rich notifications, but I have noticed sometimes the motion detection on some cameras is hit and miss. I just got a Reolink Argus 4 pro and it seems pretty good, I have only just had it for one week so still early days. I thought maybe it was a good idea to have 2 different brands of cameras on the off chance if one system is playing up, then the other will at least be working
I’ll have to keep an eye out, as I’ve got EZVIZ cameras and while they were great a couple years back, each one has water in the lens so get blurry and even doesn’t clear in the summer… so I’m going to get a new system
4:40 It talks forever in 50 different languages and it's really f-ing loud. The E1 Pro took forever to see the barcode and I kept having to reset it because the network stack kept crashing and losing settings. I looked at that Reolink PTZ super zoom but decided against it since the neighbours might think I'm literally China spying on them...anyway I switched my cameras to Annke for better compatibility with BlueIris. Really happy with them.
Recently ripped out my old cameras on Synology and replaced with Reolink. I have eight cameras including a trackmix, duo and doorbell all back to NVR. Software is good, cameras are great and best of all the value is amazing.
Happy Saturday everyone! Best. Security. System. Ever.

Happy Hibbert Day 😁
and to you brother!!
Blimey that clip from the Bill Toshed meright in the nostalgias
If Paul was security/tactical, he would be wearing gold.
But no, he's in command, playing with the toys 😂
HIM wearing his StarTrek uniform killed me! Funny because the one in the read is the one that always gets deleted first.
You know, wearing a red shirt is pretty risky.
Bloody lucky he didn't die on the ladder!
I hate cameras that advertise they aren’t working like that.
It happens at the worst times. Just shut up and wait to be fixed dammit.
I set up my Reolink doorbell with pushover and it sends me a notification with a picture.
‘Back door cam’ 😂
Kinda sad you called that area "The Rough" and not "The Badlands" Paul. There could be Maquis hiding in there....
Best comment in this whole thread 🤣
Never fails, Paul reviews a product and home assistant interventions after I figure it out. Good to know I did it right 😊
I love the follow feature!
Thanks Paul. Happy Saturday.
Captain Hibert on the USS Home assistant keep it up
I'm assuming your neighbours have restraining orders out on you to stop you filming them in their houses.
Great vid, and those prices aren't bad for a professional CCTV system
Hi Paul. I also have the Reolink doorbell. Through Homeassistant I do get to see who is in front of my door, so that doesn't have to be an elephant in the room. Just make an automation that home assistant will send you a preview.
💯 this!… Works perfectly and loading the snapshot full screen is super fast so extremely handy for a quick glance
I want to love reolink but currently my doorbell, hub and chime, all reolink cant be used together, meaning i can only get doorbell notifictions from the hub and the chime is useless
CSI : 'Enhance ... enhance'
My Saturday night is complete. Thanks, mate - it was a fun watch. I really hope you don't get in trouble for the squid games thing. EEk!
Bet it has a star trek price attached too.
Nice ha-lcars! Your dashboard is coming along nicely. 🖖 Live long and prospee
I can’t help noticing that this feature is very much backdoor heavy.
Not sure if this was a deliberate choice in post, or, if it was the master plan from the start.
Touché good sir, touché!
I have a good looking back passage 🤷♂️
@@paulhibbert you sure do!
🤣
If I was crazy rich I would buy a FLIR camera for at least, 150000 € :-) But for now my Reolink stationary camera have been working non-stop for 5 years up here in northern Norway from freezing cold to hot summers (not much of that) Reolink makes good stuff for an affordable price, It's time to make an upgrade from my old one.
Haha, that camera reminds me of Hikvison and Dahua camera i used to install on mobile CCTV towers.
I no longer call them peeping Toms.
They are now called peeping Pauls.
The two lens one is much better to give you both views and allow you to set it. The zoom one is waaay to slow for anything moving.
Well, the beast has sold out lol.. Great video pal thanks ! :) Have a great weekend, Birthday today just chillin' lol
@4:56 Matt (Next door) seems a really good egg hahah, especially at that time of the morning
Hang on, did you move next to DIY Perks?
Hi Paul!
Great video!!
What about the "Home Assistant, Home Assistant, Home Assistant" moves ??
Regards from Portugal!
Think the prices have gone up somewhat since you posted this. The DVR is more like £300 at the moment alone.
Have they added drive encryption to this NVR, like the Reolink Hub products have?
Perfectly normal work attire? We all know that you aren’t wearing pants! 😂
They cost 30 grand each.. record in 40 megapixels all the time with capabilities of recording at 80.. which is unheard of and wr dont have monitors that will show that depth of that many pixels.. i put up 2 of those cameras on the hospitak about 2 years ago..
it needs a laser pointer, preferably in the form of a corsair....
Great video: I’ve had a basic system from them in my wife’s business for almost 2 years and it’s amazing
I've been amazed at just how good their top end stuff is. I always knew they were good, but this is crazy
You just need to have a warehouse to host those two humongous "beasts" on without looking like some kind of category C prison. I think the big Ubiquiti beast is possible the only larger camera.
Price of those cameras are really decent. Do you need the NVR? or can you record to a pc/server of your own? And view it via home assist?
You can record via FTP, and the cameras have RTSP and onvif 😄
I assume you would then use onvif integration in home assistant rather than Reolink integration
OK, I got three minutes into the video and had to stop… I giggled like a little girl 😂
Bro, you crack me up! It is literally 5:30 in the morning and this has been a great way to start my day!
Sending support from across the pond!
Check out the CX range for the night colour camera, really good stuff for the price.
Someone buy Paul a pocket knife for Christmas. Dude hacking away at the packaging with an open pair of scissors hurts my soul.
can you use these zoom functions within frigate or home assistant? i use frigate exclusively, i love it
How does the person tracker work if there multiple people - who does it decide on and tracks
Great Camera's Reolink, I still have 6, all work as they should.
I've always had a couple of them kicking about, but after their last doorbell arrived at my house I decided I wanted all Reolink stuff, I am certainly not disappointed!
@paulhibbert now that I've seen more of this one though..... May need one 🤣 can't do POE though unfortunately.
5:01 good neighbours lmao
Is this how Paul end up on a register ?
I’ll have to keep an eye out, as I’ve got EZVIZ cameras and while they were great a couple years back, each one has water in the lens so get blurry and even doesn’t clear in the summer… so I’m going to get a new system
Your cameras are gonna cost more than the house...
Thanks for the amazing video review. Do you have to pay for a subscription to view the camera in Home Assistant?
No subscription required. They offer a cloud service, but it's really not needed
@JoeyMoieYW Thank you, appreciate your reply 🙂
At what temp do the PTZ cameras freeze up?... no gardeners in the UK?
I thought that is a banana cleaner device.😅
4:40 It talks forever in 50 different languages and it's really f-ing loud. The E1 Pro took forever to see the barcode and I kept having to reset it because the network stack kept crashing and losing settings. I looked at that Reolink PTZ super zoom but decided against it since the neighbours might think I'm literally China spying on them...anyway I switched my cameras to Annke for better compatibility with BlueIris. Really happy with them.
Nice!! and yeah, that setup process was brutal when I realised I couldn't cut the power 🤣
@paulhibbert do you not have circuit breakers?
@TheWebstaff yes, but unfortunately the camera was wired to The downstairs sockets, cutting power to the camera meant cutting power to the fridge 🤣
Didn’t u get interest ever in Unifi cameras? You would get network and camera management with home assistant compatibility in one go.
Recently ripped out my old cameras on Synology and replaced with Reolink. I have eight cameras including a trackmix, duo and doorbell all back to NVR. Software is good, cameras are great and best of all the value is amazing.
