Hello Painters 🎨🎨 In this video I want to talk about how to unblock your creative flow for BIG inspiring breakthroughs and the positive and negative impact our mindset can have on our creativity. Have a lovely Sunday! Best wishes, Marie Louise
Loved ❤your entire message to us fellow creatives!! It was much needed. I appreciate your positivity & absolutely love what you've created on all your paintings 🖼️ especially the charcoal ones, all beautiful work!!! You are such a beautiful soul to think of others and share such positivity & I pray & send positive vibes back to you 100 💯 May your bravery continue to grow!! 🥰😁👌✌🏾👏🫶🏽👍🏼 Jennifer
Be kind with yourself, as if you were talking to a friend or a child... I couldn't agree more. I let my Inner Child sit in the passenger seat and put the Critic in the back before I put the key in the ignition and take hold of the wheel. The joy comes from enjoying the journey even though you don't know where you'll get to :)
What a gentle supportive way you have of encouraging your viewers. I, too, have charcoal still in its box, and I now feel that I really ought to experiment without expectations. Thank you.
I've just had cancer surgery. Fortunately my surgeon chooses not to adopt "a beginners attitude" when resecting a malignant tumour! Same is true for virtually all other professionals regardless of their particular discipline. Thank goodness! 😂 I've never met an authentic zen Buddhist. Plenty of quotes but not much practice. 😂
Another fantastic video. Listening and watching you is like a very gentle therapy session. I am so inspired to use my soft pastels, which I love, but I really don't know how to use them, so I just look at them on my shelf. Thank you for the inspiration.
I had a laugh when you talked about your history with charcoal as my experience was similar. It was just to messy. After watching this video I am digging my charcoal out again. I like that you use large large surfaces and big strokes. This painting is lovely thank you
We made charcoal differently. Birch twigs of the cut size and the required thickness are placed in a tin can of the right size (from under canned food), then all this is covered with sand to the top and closed with a lid made of thick foil. Then it is guessed into the coals of the fire and completely covered with them. Baking time depends on the size of the jar and the amount of sand. Then the coal is obtained of the required quality and the whole is evenly baked!
Awesome! Since I’ve retired I’m just loving to paint and I have innumerable inspiration from nature. I spend hours without even noticing that time has flown by.. it’s Devine and I feel creative and getting very proud of myself! 😊🎉
Thank you for reminding me that I too have put my charcoal in a box- loved seeing and hearing your supportive encouragement to loosen up, play❤and try some different ways of approaching my practice😊
Thank you! I just began painting a month ago and you have given me confidence, and after a couple of fitful mistakes, I quit expecting a particular outcome and my art has been so freeing in many ways. I got out of my own way.
I play this video from time to time to remind me to not get so precious about my work and to use more of the birthday and Christmas presents I have not done justice to. Thank you. X
I enjoy imensly watching you paint. I did use charcoal a lot in the past but never like you. You are endless source of ideas🎉. I used it for studyeson paper and scetching my subject on canvas before laying the oil paint. Sometimes even add details on top of oil paint. For solution I used turpentine. But it is much cooler in your way. Because the beautifull layer of deluted charcoal does not dissappear under the layer of oil paint. And is much quicker. :) Thank you a lot.
Wow, I just came upon your video by chance. Thank you. I have been painting portraits in oil and have been fighting with myself to become looser in my painting. Tomorrow morning I'm going to get a large canvas, charcoal, pastels, watercolour and music and go for it - Thanks 🥰
I was the exact same with charcoal!!😂 Now I've bought compressed charcoal and all sorts! This is my 1st time watching you and I'm inspired! Rona Main ( Glasgow School of Art).
I am by nature a pretty detailed and controlling person, so "letting go" on a canvas was really difficult and yet, something in me wants to do it, so lo and behold, today I did it and boy, did that feel good. Thank you for your help in setting me free!
Thank you for the inspiration and reminder to just let go and enjoy the moment. Excellent video Marie Louise… I love your simple, clear instructions. The Zen philosophy of always having a beginners mind… so easy to link with. Shut out that adult monkey mind and play….play like a child ❤
Wonderful advice! I actually have an old box of pastels and some charcoal and I’m breaking them out and using them today! I’m curious what music you were listening to while painting? Always love your videos Marie Louise 🎨☀️🌙⭐️🌎
Brilliantly put. There's a balance to be had and too much control can actually interrupt creativity. The more you TRY, the worse it can get. Love this explanation
I've recently returned to painting after a 15 year break, and I have 80 works done and I haven't had any creative blocks at all, knock on wood. I'm on a roll!
Very interesting. Adding water to charcoal was a game-changer for me. A 'Beginner's mindset' is so important and is key to my working process. But it can be unsettling because sometimes I feel I am forever in the 'experimental stage' and never actually 'arriving'.
Oh yes I get that too where the experimental stage seems to go on and on and on. I try to work on something else and the energy follows me there. Sometimes days or even weeks. Then it's time to go hiking, gardening and beach combing ;-)
That is sooo kind of you... but I honestly struggle a lot - that's way I'm so fond of "layering" because it means I can cover things up that I don't like hahaha. Thanks for watching :)
I have just got into charcoal too! Someone gave me some homemade charcoal years ago and I’m loving it. the different marks it makes and unpredictability of it. Can spay it with a fixative then before painting if you don’t want to move it around so much. 😊
I have enjoyed most of your videos and like your work very much. I am about to turn 80. I have drawn and painted and sculpted and taught for most of my life. When Covid struck, I left figurative art behind and leapt into painting abstracts using any and all of the supplies in my studio. It has been fun but now I'm lost. No expectations can have a downside. Any ideas for me?
Such an encouraging video. I totally agree with you about the need to leave comfort zones behind now and again. How else can we develop? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and techniques.
Same as you, i thought charcoal is very messy and difficult to control and as you left it in the box for a very long time. Them friend of mine have told me about few days ago to try it and she said ,I know you will like it. And now I saw your video and your gentile support really is making me think to think outside of box, to push myself out from comfort zone and try it again, and keep open mind! There is a saying, when two people tell you you're drunk, you should believe them! Lol Thanks again!
So interesting to see you use a screen printing squeegee to paint. I've not seen that before. Just shows that you should try all sorts of atypical tools and see what comes of it.

Thanks Precious. Glorious art, soothing & encouraging voice, wonderful video! Happy painting 🥰
When I'm very quiet, I can hear the oil pastel chalk on top of the cabinet screaming and crying. 😊 Thank you very much for your advice!
Zen Buddhism teaches to always have a beginners mind
'To the beginner, the possibilities are endless.
To the master, the possibilities are few.'

I can really relate to what you said.

Thank you for this. Many of us know what you said but forget it time and time again. We should put a big remainder sign near our work space!
I made a sign like that for my studio wall. It works ;-)
Thanks a lot for sharing these inspiring thoughts. I feel like you uncovered some inner thoughts of mine.
I literally gasped when I saw the thumbnail for this video in my feed. 😮💕
❤🙏🎨 „Shift your mindset for a creative breakthrough“ … Thank you for sharing 🎨🙏👍👏😉
Love, love, love your work! Thank you for letting us be part of your process! What music do you normally listen to while painting?
Thank you! Greetings from Mexico.

Guess I’ll be digging out those pastels I bought 10 years ago and never used😊. This is a wonderful video. Thank you.

Good for you, so glad to hear it. Being in nature brings me so much joy and inspiration too!
yes, move forward, no mistakes, no rules.
Yes!! You know how much I love charcoal ❤ I’m so glad to see you having fun with it. And I love making messes, that part is pure joy!!
I did not know Rhod Evans. Now I do. He is an amazing artist! Thank you!
thank you!!
Love to see you painting large, Marie Louise! Maybe sometime you could show us what you’d do with soft pastels?
I have some charcoal I may just give it a try, thank you for the encouragement.
Thank you for reminding me that I too have put my charcoal in a box- loved seeing and hearing your supportive encouragement to loosen up, play❤and try some different ways of approaching my practice😊

Good advice, I have a never ending battle to 'loosen up'. Thank you.
Thank you, what an encouraging video. ❤

Love your style. You are truly talented ❤

For your artwork and Recommendation
Brilliantly put. There's a balance to be had and too much control can actually interrupt creativity. The more you TRY, the worse it can get. Love this explanation
Thank you once again ❤
I've recently returned to painting after a 15 year break, and I have 80 works done and I haven't had any creative blocks at all, knock on wood. I'm on a roll!
I had to subscribe to your channel but no paintings though
I love your work!
Great lesson...
I really enjoy your videos and am learning a lot from you. Thank you very much!
SWEET😊 so right on.

Sometimes is hard to just let go ,
Going to try this as I’ve a box of charcoal and pastels and I’ve been scared of them
Thanks again
You can do it 🎨🎨

I felt the same way about charcoal until I discovered Austrian charcoal! It’s a completely different experience, very elegant, give it a try!
That is so intersting I haven't heard about them - will keep my eye out. Thanks for the tip!
Useful tutorial, thank you
This is REALLY helpful 😆!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻😎
Thank you!
I need to try this. Thanks. Oh, and I may just make my own charcoal if I like the process. Thanks again!
Thanks for this . We all have that old charcoal box somewhere. Loved the approach ❤encouraging
Fantastic for reminding us, I did exactly this the other month and helped me get back on track
Thanks again Marie Louise, you always give great advice, cheers.
This was very inspiring to me! Thank you for sharing it!
Nice work. ❤
Your composition is always spot on perfection. Anything you paint is beautiful honestly..
That is sooo kind of you... but I honestly struggle a lot - that's way I'm so fond of "layering" because it means I can cover things up that I don't like hahaha. Thanks for watching :)

Boy,are you right on the money! Thank you.🇨🇦

So true… great advice!
wonderful reminders!! Thank you!
What an amazing video. Thank you. Would love to see the completed paintings younwerenworking on.
When you put transparent acrylic paint over the charcoal mark, does it 'fix' the charcoal so it doesn't smear? Thanks!
I live in San Diego, California and love your video! Thx
Such an encouraging video. I totally agree with you about the need to leave comfort zones behind now and again. How else can we develop? Thank you for sharing your thoughts and techniques.
Thank you so much for this video.

Thanks Louise’ a great video’. I have been given a box of charcoal from my son, a great way to express ones inner thoughts by just going for it’ x
