Waiting for EVs to get out of beta. Battery tech is really primitive right now, lithium batteries are only at about 9% of their theoretical energy density limit at present.
Is that 215kph limiter just because it's a test car or is that actually the top speed of it? If so that's a bit silly considering a 2L diesel these days will easily crack that. Especially for a german car 😅
well it's electric after all, the energy consumption was already insane on those 215kph, if the limiter wouldn't be there it would run out of juice before it even reaches its top speed lol
@@borecko1 bwah, if you wana do crazy speeds with your own car i think you should be allowed to (on the autobahn), even if the consumption is dumb. maybe with a little bong warning about high battery drain (that is if the reason is purely software and not like: the motor reaching it's max rpm or something)
@@MichaelVanBladel If you want freedom you'll have to opt for a Tesla. For 20k less you can have a Model 3 Performance that'll go 160mph - because Tesla knows their customers are smart enough to understand the consumption implications.
The Germans no longer have an edge over the rest of the automotive industry. They used to be known for refined engines and great build quality, now everyone is using electric motors which are generally smoother than ICE, so no edge. Quality has also gone down the shitter, case in point, Golf 8 interior.
I have to say, I agree with you. I'm a huge Mercedes fan, and currently have a 2005 S55 AMG, upgrading to a more recent S550 in the next year. But if I were to go electric, there is absolutely nothing compelling about this to me. Here in the states I can get a Tesla Model S or Lucid Air with more power, more range, and all for the same price. The Euro offerings just have no appeal. I do get to drive a E-Tron GT for the weekend though, so maybe that will change my mind?
Their build quality has been bad for almost 2 decades now, due to the "excellent" laws of Germany mandating that close to 70% of the car has to be bio-degradable... or something like that. So it was their engines that were very good and still are. And with china mass-producing what used to be called high-quality, luxurious interiors now, although they were always garbage, just visually pleasing, now even cheaper cars can have better-looking interiors. And the future is Hydrogen ICEs. Just look at Toyota's Hydrogen engine. The only waste is water vapor, greener than batteries 1000x times, and hydrogen is produced using ocean wave energy and watter. Which also cleans the excess water.
@@markusjaguar1258 Generally no, we're not. But some of our vehicles are built to a very high standard, and depending on what you prioritize for electrics (speed, range, the ratio of speed and range, etc), the cars we're building here make WAY more sense than a 400 horsepower mercedes with 200 miles of useable range.

Really? Do you lock your car ever? Does it have an alarm system? An immobiliser? This is just a next logical step in ensuring only authorised users have access to a vehicle. And these modern systems can provide other benefits: remember when Tesla remote enabled extra capacity in all their cars to help Floridians escape a natural disaster?
@@mediaserver8265 If I push the button on my alarm, it can't refuse my command. If i put the key in the keyhole, it doesn't refuse my key. So how about you stop with the false equivalency nonsense? "remote enabled extra capacity".. Oh really? And where did this magical "extra capacity" appear from? Thin air? How does a software update increase physical battery capacity? It doesn't because it can't. Superb example of telling me you don't understand how these things work, without telling me you don't understand how these things work.
@@QBDLettuce you're missing the subtlety here. . You say 'my alarm' and '' my command' and 'my key'. In the video, Matt is issuing commands to a system that is not his. If the authorised owner were to issue the commands, the system would comply. Just like the possessor of the key can unlock their vehicle. Its not false, its a fully equivalent. On the Tesla question and where the extra capacity came from, the vehicles in question were software locked at a lower capacity than was physically available. This was a commercial model that the vehicle owners agreed to - they could unlock that capacity for an extra fee. So nothing nefarious there at all. It didn't suddenly appear. Maybe it's not me who doesn't understand?
@@mediaserver8265 why would one want to have to unlock extra capacity. Just give all the capacity without any silly pay walls. Longevity compromised because too many things will also go wrong electronically and no hope of repairing anything yourself/cheaply....in other words throw away crap
@@KingofInterns Now that's just adding more whatabouttery to the discussion. (and I don't necessarily disagree with you at all). The main point here is that the cars 'compliance' systems are an evolution of security and are there for the benefit of the owner. The Tesla example was to illustrate how technology can be leveraged for good as well as the usual perceived evil. However, to answer your questions directly on the 'why' - I imagine it's a commercial decision by Tesla to offer a vehicle at a cheaper price point to users who can later 'upgrade'. (I believe it's a $3000 saving, or upgrade fee, depending on how you look at it). I imagine the logic from a consumer perspective is I can get the car today a little cheaper than I might otherwise and add the extra capacity later as and when I needed it. With the comfort that that upgrade is there as an option. (there's a wholly separate discussion here about consumers over-stretching financially for the latest toys, of which this is likely a symptom, but that's for another day). Now, I'm not saying I agree with that particular business model, or that particular mindset on behalf of the owner. I was just using that example to illustrate the point that not all modern technology systems = bad. And in any case, all of this is quite off the point - that refusal by the Mercedes to comply with the driver request was completely valid in my opinion as the driver is not the same as the owner. What I don't know is if the owner can select to remove this restriction and allow any driver have full access to all features? Or is 'login' mandatory? I'd be interested to find out.

Here in the UK the government passed legislation that every new house should have a basic car charger built in. They're not very good the basic ones but its a start. The current grid won't cope if everyone suddenly switched tomorrow, you're right there. But its a gradual thing and the grid is currently being and will be optimised as time moves on this is another reason Energy companies give cheaper night rates for EV charging to incentivse charging when the grid is under less demand. I'm not a fan of a electric either with my current hot hatch Ive got 400hp with more range for a hell of a lot cheaper, nearly 1/4 of the of the price of the cheaper EQE350+ which only has 290hp. In my experience the german police is usually rather friendly but I guess there are exceptions
Well, they were friendly but there definitely are exceptions as is the case with basically everything :D
I had an issue with the police exactly one tome because I accidentally parked in a really dumb place.
I caused them a lot of work and I feel bad about it because they were really nice
UK people when they see Mat Watson: screams and cant wait to see Mat Watson in person
German people: does nothing
They might do that to Liam instead, the host of the German carwow.
I quite like the look of it to be honest. It might become the new style with manufacturers chasing efficiency
Looks like every other hybrid… gives me old Civic Hybrid vibes
Mercedes design group, is that you? The car looks like a Prius.
In grey, it actually looks great full stop. I think it's because the way light reflects on the paint hides the strange proportions well. In blue though, it becomes readily apparent how aerodynamic focused the design is. The window line in particular is very very odd looking.

The 'Beauty' of all electric cars is a range anxiety, you just cant enjoy, relax and drive. No music, climate control or fast acceleration if want to get from point A to point B. Matt is good to show all aspects of car, well done to him.
That could be true for German car manufacturers as they're still trying hard to catch up. I charge my Tesla at home for a ridiculous price, enjoy climate, full Spotify access on a mega sound system, "smoke" all boy racers, all that with around 486km of range at 90%...
@@WiZe1972 Tesla's aren't beautiful either, the word 'beauty' and 'electric cars' don't belong in the same sentence. It's not possible to make a beautiful electric car, they're all ugly.
Electric cars are boring as fuck, they're quiet and aren't as fun as internal combustion engine cars. Most people including myself still prefer internal combustion engine cars.
@@automation7295 don't get me wrong, I'm a car guy, but for city driving I'd rather ride my bike to work without having to put up with diesel and petrol smoke, it's hideous. Electric ftw. (ICE cars are more fun tho, especially on the track)

"German police is much scarier than British police." - Ever dealt with the police in the US? xD
You're comparing real Police officers who respect citizen's rights with people that think they can do whatever they want just because they have a uniform 🙂
American police are just lazy rather than scary. They only shoot you so they don't have to run after you. (especially no mercy for fast runners)
It's not the guns that make police scary. It's how frequently they make use of it)
German police got very violent in the past few years - even before Corona there were plenty of cases where the police just went mad.
Even a special representative from the United Nations was send to germany to have a look at the demonstrations and how the police behaves.

I think those people were just being extremely rude to Matt Watson when he pulled up in his fancy Mercedes EQE. That is definitely not how you treat famous people.
Ever heard of tinted-glass? They probably can't see him at all. I think you're wishing death on people, especially on children.
What would the range be on a 400hp petrol Merc sitting at 120mph? Be an interesting comparison.
An E class about 6km per L with cruise control. With a 65L tank it would be about 390km.
@car no that would mean the e class has a fuel consumption of 16l/100km which is absolutely wrong. You should have a range between 800-1100km depending on the roads.
@@j.r.5263 Who cares about the range of ICE - anything above 600 is fine, it takes 3 minutes to fill up and you are good to go.
@@j.r.5263 READ! The poster asked about 120mph, which is about 200km/ph. With a 6 cylinder E class, that would be about 6km per liter more or less.
In a 400hp petrol BMW I’m seeing around 10 l/100km at that speed. So range is around 600km with a 60l tank. Usage goes up if there’s traffic and it’s constant acceleration instead of cruising.
The blinker of the BMW works??? What the heckkk!!
I saw an EQS the other day and they do look better in person. And this EQE does look better even on video.
I do appreciate almost all of Mat's reviews on cars. He does an amazing job. Can't fault him for his reviews, but I do fault him for not liking Mercedes.
30kwh/100km at 0,50eur/kw = 15eur/100km. Hmm.. that’s like 8L/100km diesel without range limits.

*This mans enthusiasm is wonderful and I've gotta say I like the look of this one* 🔥
Haha, that reminded me of when me and my friends were staying in the same hotel as the Roma team in Milan. There were hundreds of fans outside, so we walked out of the hotel as a group waving at the crowd. There was a loud cheer that abruptly stopped after about 2 seconds!
Mercedes really let this man put his feet up from the backseat on an unreleased display car 😂
Of course they did. Everyone fears his stick of truth 😏
Could you put kilometres wherever you display miles for your videos?
Hey Mat, thank you for mentioning my indicators on my BMW. I didn't know until then what the funny lever behind the steering wheel was for and I accidentally bumped into it when changing to the right lane. When suddenly a light I have never seen before flashed three times next to my speedometer, my first thought was that my car is defective.
Isn‘t that the build-in party mode?
Oh, i always thought party mode was those extra bright headlights that you flash rapidly when you're really close behind another vehicle.
Great video. What I can’t get my head around is that if this the new e class it’s about twice as expensive as the current one.
That's technology for you.
I would take an S Class

Wait so you're telling me this car comes with two different interior designs depending on the spec?!
EV cars are excellent for all purposes except going fast on the Autobahn... the German drivers will probably prefer ICE cars until battery tech improves significantly 😂

The EQS was a MASSIVE fail. Both in styling, and rear seat luxury.
This EQE looks like a step in the right direction.
Yeah, the EQS should have been the EQA in reality.
EQE price is a huge disappointment to me. I was thinking this was going to be my next car but now not so sure. You could possibly get a base level Porsche Taycan or Audi E Tron Quattro for the same price…

Waiting for EVs to get out of beta. Battery tech is really primitive right now, lithium batteries are only at about 9% of their theoretical energy density limit at present.
Buy a Tesla and take advantage of their superior supercharger network.

Between Matt and Rory, these are my 2 fave RUclips motoring journos. Well aside from Harris of course.
I think the EQE is gorgeous! It's modern but not "too extreme". It doesn't look weird just because "well an EV's gotta look different lol"
For 20k less you can have a Model 3 Performance that'll go 160mph - because Tesla knows their customers are smart enough to understand the consumption implications.
my dad’s 110 hp 1.5 dCi can do that too
An e220d is better in every way and like half the price
The Germans no longer have an edge over the rest of the automotive industry. They used to be known for refined engines and great build quality, now everyone is using electric motors which are generally smoother than ICE, so no edge. Quality has also gone down the shitter, case in point, Golf 8 interior.
But this car was smooth due to the suspension, no? And that is hard with evs due to the weight
If you're going to tell me, that Americans are building vehicles just as good as the Germans, you're definitely on that pack, son.
Thanks for constantly uploading Matt.

If I want anything to NOT be in my car is a moody computer.
The sheer amount of stupidity and incompetence Mercedes has managed to put into a car is astonishing, I would have driven this car into the closest river/pool/chasm I could find to get humanity rid of this abomination.
If Mercedes is so incompetent, they should stop putting computers in their cars or even better, stop building altogether.
@@hirondelle8734 Why would I be limited to a single manufacturer then? Not all car manufacturers release cars with faulty software and hardware from the '90s.
Get a japanese car bro.
Japan might look like a technocrat dystopia sometimes, but at least they get the basics: don't wire everything to a computer you never tested.
Yeah, the fact the voice control told him which buttons to press instead of doing the fucking thing he asked is utterly ridiculous.
Also, damn is this ever one chatty system, how incredibly annoying!
That infotainment system refusing to do something the driver is telling it to do, is a glimpse at the dark, dystopian future of EV's under complete control of either the government or private company. Beware what they tell you is for your convenience. 🙂👌
This is precisely proving QBD's point and why so many of us really hate modern cars. Poor build quality, touch buttons and screens one doesn't need.

One word BULLOCKS!!!
I will never drive a electric car!!!!
Unless it becomes law!!!
It's all a joke , fuck me if every single person got an electric car tomorrow this would happen
1.the queues would be miles long for waiting to get a charger
2, the power grid could not cope
And maybe to solve these 2 huge future problems every new house being built should have a charger point lol!!
