I went to an Airbnb once that used those type set tray as a sort of “guest book”. People staying would leave a little trinket behind in it! Some of the things people left were like tickets, coins, little souvenirs, pieces of nature, etc! It was so fun and definitely had me looking for tiny items to put in it my whole stay 😂

Oh my gosh that place is a gold mine. I would be at that place every weekend and get everything I need from there. I am in Florida and there’s no place by me that’s like that. When I lived in Maryland we had a place like that and it was fabulous. Especially when you’re going for the aesthetic that you’re going for. you need to thrift there all the time. And those trays you got are from a type setter cabinet. The ones with compartments people crave and they put little knickknacks in them. I’ve not seen one like you found that had no compartments in it. They came from some big printing house.

I have several of these Type Setting Drawers on my walls and they hold my Wade Collections. Wades were miniature ceramic figurines of animals, circus animals, Noah's Arks, nursery rhyme characters, etc. that were packaged in Red Rose Tea in Canada (1967-1984) and America (1983 to 2012). They had some collections that were sold directly and not included in the packaged tea.

Those "drawers" are type-cases - the lead letters were stored in them - with drawers for different sizes and different fonts - used for hand typesetting and letterpress printing. The compartments are differing sizes for the lower-case letters where quantities were different - e.g. more "e" than "z" - here in the UK they sell for GBP£30 and more each!

IDEA: Use the left over piece of veneer with the leaf cutout as a negative for a picture. Anything could be put behind it. Another wooden drawer OR create a new frame to fit the cutout size. Wall paper, paint or fabric could go behind the leaf shape to show through. I loved the drawers you found and the idea you had for them. Very cool vintage stuff.

Those are letter set drawers - they were used by printers to store sets of letters in, back in the day when printers had to set every letter into a frame so each sheet of paper could be printed. Each size of font and font would have its own drawer. I have one - I put rock, mineral specimens and seashells in the compartments. My son used some of compartments for his Hot Wheel collection.

Those old drawers with the sections look like they came from an old type set business. They would have held letters of different fonts for print on flyers, newspapers, magazines etc. I have not seen them in years.
Miniatures would be collectibles you could showcase in them........or a memory board for peoples graduations or weddings or babies collectibles............dozens of things. I am a seamstress and I could do threads in there and hang them and the colors would be beautiful of the different threads I use. I run a industrial embroidery machine as well and have a couple hundred of threads of different shades of like colors and it would actually become an artistic wall hanging that I could use but the rainbows of colors would be gorgeous! Love how you have used those. I will have to contact my sister in Omaha and see if she knows of the place and perhaps have her get me one or two and I can pick them up when we visit............that would be toooo fun! Lots of family there so I am sure they know of it.
    Thanks so much.........fun video!

I love the old type set drawers. Mine sadly was a pain to keep dusted so I sold it.

I prefer the project with the recycled drawers with the veneer leaves on them. Very cute & clever idea. The white recycled canvases seem a bit stark to my eye. They do brighten up the dark wall, but it appears to me like 3 snow swept empty fields. If they had small dark birds flying across them in the distance, some other small wildlife images, even a lake, I might like them more?

Here in Spain the wooden typography drawers are so difficult to find and extremely expensive! Inuse mine to hang my rubber stamp collection. This place is heaven

How about putting on legs for a table. My grandmother had a table with the same top and it had a safe glass on top. Used it as a side table next to my uncle’s recliner. (Her brother)
