Renault Scenic E-Tech: the Efficient, Family-Friendly EV We've Been Waiting For?

  • On 14 December 2023, Renault published its prices and final specification for the new Renault Scenic E-Tech in the UK. It's an extended range 87kWh battery EV with generous but not oversized family proportions. Deemed to be nearly as efficient as the Megane E-Tech, it's available in a comprehensive 'Techno' package for which you do not need to add any options, not even a metallic colour as the price is all inclusive. The range is very mighty and the charging curve is in theory significantly improved on the Megane, which was one of that little sister's downside.
There are a good number of efficiency led efforts on the car which are noteworthy. We go through the spec and conclude on where it stands compared to some of the alternative propositions in the market.

Just ordered one in the the mid range Esprit Alpine which imo is better than the top spec Iconic given it has the sports seats which are a dark colour and look way better and much more comfy not to mention the wheels on the Alpine are way better too. Iv gone for the Shadow Grey 2 tone roof in matte rather than metallic. Never had a matte finish car and iv been told it’s a nightmare to keep clean as you can’t just use any old car wash and it’s prone to chips more. But the look is way better so hoping the extra t costs to get it in matte (extra £500) I think so £1750 extra with the colour selection.
Iv test driven the Peugeot E3008, Megane ETech, Cupra Born & MG4 in the past week and the Scenic wins. Bearing in mind I’m currently driving a 2021 Peugeot 3008

Sounds like a well researched choice! All the best and enjoy your new car when it comes.

Also worth mentioning: The car supports Apple's next generation CarPlay, so you have that to choose also so it won't just be Googles operating system in the car.

Definitely interested in knowing more about your calculations at 06:36 . Regarding the Scenic, it definitely looks like a very good EV on paper. You forgot to mention the amazing sunroof feature which made my kids go “wow” when we watched the fully charged video. 😂
17.2kWh/62 miles, that’s 3.6 miles/kWh, which is definitely not amazing. At motorway speed, people seem to be getting around 200 miles of range for the Megane e-tech which, for 100%-15% gives 3.92 miles/kWh. So on mixed roads you’d probably get closer to 4-4.5 miles/kWh for the Megane e-tech. I have made simulations and any slight variation in efficiency can impact the annual running costs quite significantly. For example, the Citroen e-C4 would be more expensive to run than the Megane e-tech in my circumstances. The boot of the e-tech is also already quite big, definitely bigger than the Ioniq28. The charging curve is what seems to be a bit disappointing for the e-tech, but maybe that’s something they could address with a software update?

It's probably safer to assume the megane charge curve will stay as is. Any update would be an upside.

Thanks, I am interested. I am wondering if we will pay the extra road tax on cars with listed price over £40,000 from 2025? I will have to check again and wonder if this affect prices next year? I am hoping to find a cheap lease sometime in the future and would be happy to purchase a second hand one. Depreciation on new cars is terrible and I’m not sure if EVs are any worse. Obviously, upgrade of model is a good time to get old model. There are good opportunities for value, but timing is very difficult. Cheers.

That's right. At least in the UK depreciation of used cars (not just EVs) has been a roller coaster. But it means lots of solid EV propositions are now available at £10k-£15k

We're you tempted by the Mégane?

Yes. A bit too small and the charging curve falls below that of the Ioniq28 at c50% despite lower efficiency...

      @@evdabblerwow, did not know that.

In reality most people won't need such a huge battery (even if they think they do). Hopefully there will be a cheaper, smaller battery version along in a while...

Absolutely. And particularly true for the UK audience who have no intention to cross the border. Elsewhere there is a 60kWh battery option (like the Megane).

    625km range ! (not 610)

Marketed as 379 miles in the UK that's 609.9km. Marketed as 625km in France. Oh well!
