Imagine not making varsity at Newbury Park because your team contained several of the greatest American HS runners of all time.
Running like a 16:20 and not being varsity
@@Jiggen4biggens you mean 15:00
They could legitimately have a future NCAA all american that's JV for them.
Imagine not being able to make Newbury Park's Varsity XC team, but you could set course records for other high schools.
@@Jiggen4biggens I’m running 17:30s
Newbury Park had all 7 go under 15:00! What kind of insanity is this?!
Colin - 14:03.3; Leo - 14:05.1; Lex - 14:05.5; Aaron - 14:14.4; Daniel - 14:45.0; Hector - 14:52.2; and Dev 14:59.6
That is insane! Definitely, the greatest cross-country team ever assembled bar none.
Even better than the dynasty from York HS and Joe Newton!
Absolutely insanity
Crazy!! I graduated high school in '08, my little charter school in Fl and myself competed at states my 7th and 8th gr yr and all top guys were only running mid 15s, some low 15s, never 14 mins, crazy how these times just gotten way faster!
Imagine running 15:00 and not making vatsity
You can tell newbury really tried this race. Cause every other race this season. You just see them walking off smiling but this race they are completely drained at the finished. It’s crazy what these guys can do when they go 100%
Yeah. They really tried.
Nah they went 100% last mile
Why would they not go 100% on every race?
@@carsonutley4134 cause they don’t need to, they save themselves for the important races, They use smaller races as workouts to get better
These guys are so dominant in America, I'd love to see them do u20 international cross country or track. I remember u20 2018 when Cooper Teare ran u20 and got experience running against the likes of Jacob Kiplimo, Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Selemon Barega. Cooper talked about how great that international experience was.
Something desperately needs to be done about the footage quality for future broadcasts. Not only is it blurry, but the constant freezing made this extremely frustrating to watch. One would expect better from a meet of this level. Now this is going to be what people have to watch whenever they want to see the high school national record being set. Very disappointing.
It's not too bad for a live stream off a bouncing and jolting golf cart
@@MacQuiddy Maybe, but the stationary finish line camera had the same level of quality
certainly.
@@MacQuiddy there was better video by Rod Dixon 35 years ago
While I appreciate the free content, Ive seen videos taken by parents running around the course on cell phones that were better. Get a stabilizer or something. Although at least we got to watch the record be broken unlike last year when Hutchins outran the camera in the last 20 meters 😂.
Running is a thing now...it's so good to see crowds "10 to 15 deep" and described as "large as football games". This is inspiring for those wanting to run or coach XC. Getting kids into this sport is a challenge but things like this race, all the good XC movies (Overcomer, Patriots Day, Brittany Runs A Marathon, McFarland USA, Pre, etc.), and marathon coverage is a start...
it's translating into Americans being more competitive at the global level. I wonder why it's happening? I would have predicted the opposite trend (shows how much I know, ie. nothing).
Their 4x1mile during track is gonna be insane 😭😭
Probably not going to run a 4xmile though.
@@biguzivert they would definitely break whatever the record is I don’t see why they wouldn’t try it

What is the current record for that?
It took ~60 years for the national 5k average to go from 15:45 to 15:00, it just took Newbury Park 1 year to bring it from 15:00 down to 14:15 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Technically they get kids from across California to race cross-country at the school. It's not like they all live in the area.
@@Skibidibobobeebop No they don't, they are all from the same area lol

The announcers kept saying “its going to be a foot race” dah it is a foot race. 😂😂😂 awesome running - congrats to the runners - very well done. 😀👍🏃♂️🏃♂️
That’s what I kept thinking. People gathered from across the country to - run a foot race. And now you’re in the middle of said foot race and the announcers are telling you it’s a foot race.
The announcers made sure to let us know it was a foot race...
yea bruh as opposed to a car race smh, commentators def annoying
I was thinking the very same thing. =)
"It's going to be a footrace..." with 10 meters left in the race. SMH.
Congratulations to the Newbury Park Boys Cross Country team on an outstanding season and National Championship. They have a great coach as they seem to be a powerhouse in cross country year in and year out.
I'm gonna say this again...this is an ELITE College D1 Team!
At a minimum they are a Div I national qualifier team, a no doubt top 30 at minimum.
@@ryanfitzgerald2816 .... check out top 3 even top 4 times in the CA state meet. They are near if not had beaten Nico Young's time (jump in and correct me tho all good either way). That's basically 4 Nico Youngs on that squad. 5Fifth man also close. Yes they do gotta cover 8k even 10k tho at the NCAA D1 national level so you have a point ;).
@@arvandero As a one-time participant at the NCAA meet myself, I was mid-late pack runner there. I'm very confident their top 4 would have beat a 21 year old me. I'd have been competing to be the 5th/6th man on that freaking HS team with a 3-4 year age advantage on them! Now that I think about it more, I think they'd be safely top 20 finisher, maybe as high as 15th.
Announcers: “this is going to be a race to the finish”
“footrace”
Newbury Park 4 guys under 14:15... The Young brothers are the younger siblings of NAU Nico Young like what's in the water at that families home?
...and Colin Sahlman is going to NAU. I imagine the Young bros will also attend NAU (getting ahead of myself), and possibly also Aaron Sahlman.
@@tawfeeqismail9279 literally NAU in 2 years is just gonna be Newbury park part 2😭😂 the all the brothers gonna be back on the same team for sure lol
@@roro6064 NAU is going go down as a legendary NCAA distance running powerhouse.
Can you imagine Nico as a senior with his younger brothers and the Sahlmans as a college team?! It’s a possibility, these guys are humble and share a very close bond with one another. And why not the others going there and a transfer from Jace. Kinda wishful thinking on the last part, but the Youngs and the Sahlmans is very possible.
@@mizrahimjew9351 yea there’s no way the youngs and younger salhmans don’t go. There’s no way NAU doesn’t hit all them up to go the college. Literally possible for next year for the twins and the young salhman to be 1,2,3 at nationals So NAU can literally get the 3 fastest dudes in the nation if they aren’t dumb 😂 I just don’t see how NAU doesn’t get all of them especially since both youngs older brother and salhman older brother are both committed to NAU😭
I'm very happy to Congrats to the Newbury Park HS, Is Making History 1, 2, 3, 5, 17, (20, 27) Total 28 Points a NEW MEET RECORD!!!
I would imagine that every college in the country is looking at Newbury Park High School's coach and salivating. It's probably inevitable that he will not be NPHS' coach much longer because someone will through a much bigger paycheck at him. It's stunning what he has done with the program in 4 years.
That was 2.1 miles at 9:41. That’s just where they were able to put the banner
That makes a lot more sense given how fast these guys are
I thought they ran a sub 4 last mile for a sec thanks for this comment 🤣
I assumed it must have been 2.1 miles as well. No way those guys were that slow at just 2 miles and that crazy fast for the last 1.1 if it was a 2 mile split.
Was the 2 mile split like insanely wrong? They literally had to break 4 in the last mile to go from 9:41 to 14:04. Even with a big kick their 2 mile split should have been around 9:10 or 9:15.
It's actually a 2.10 mile split but the announcers didn't know that I guess.

Yeah pretty much, I think they’re 3 mile split was 13:37
Wow- so this was a true 5k race then! This is insane (in a wonderful way)- glad I’m alive in 2021😀
Love that 360p upload masked as 1080
It was pretty crazy watching a national record be set in person
Yoo logan what's good
Wow, now I want to crush my marathon training this week even more (despite it being a cutdown week to 46 miles, down from 50 this week). I'm training for a marathon in February but the 5k is an entirely harder beast IMO.
Ok
Dude - are you running the GA Marathon in Atlanta? I'm just under 600 miles since June; will be about 1100 by the late Feb race - and I'll be 59! Son and I ran ATL half-M Thanksgiving; Kennesaw 13.1 this Sunday and the Galloway next Sunday - slightly shorter and much more fun than a normal training run.
Newbury Park averages under 14:30 for the 5 (of the top 7) that are returning next year. Plus, they have another guy who was supposed to be in their top 7 but had been hurt most of the season and just started racing again. He ran 15:29 in the Silver race.
They have a really fast 8th grader coming in too
Quite an accomplishment! What a memory to have and just the beginning and the coaches must be stocked also! Great climate....atmosphere. Girls race?
Let's never stop breaking records keep it up
All Courses are different - records are somewhat Subjective and course-specific. This was still Very fast! (*Training and running knowledge is so Much More Advanced than it was 20+yrs ago in, 2000! Haha!)
Ritzenhein did his record solo as well! Got to see him run a lot being from Michigan.
Incredible race. Even if the course is fast and short, who cares, they ran fast as heck and it was a race. Love that Young Brothers pushed.
Wow! Kole mathison from Carmel ran an amazing fast time 14:23 in this and just a junior. Maybe he’ll brake Futsum’s record on Lavern Gibson next year of 14:48. It’s amazing how many sub 15 guys have ran at lavern Gibson over the years, but that record of 14:48 is still standing since 2011.
13 finish is Shane Brosnan at 14:25.6. Had to stop and look three times to be sure I wasn't seeing Sean : )
yeah i was there running a 16:57 😱😱😱, bad day for me 😭
The amount of lag In this video is stupid
Never knew N Young’s brothers were that fast!💨
Thanks for explaining this was going to be a foot race. I was lost for a second.
Outstanding..!!!! That about sums it up...
Kole Mattison is on my cross country team for my high school and it is the most impressive thing watching him run
My dude Zane Bergen coming thru in 14:09 for Niwot, WOWWWWWWWWWWWW
A race for the ages
My right earbud loved this video
FASTEST RACE OF ALL TIME.
Holy moly!!!
Nice job newberry school...keep on producing great runner
Newbury Park 7 under 15:00. Newbury Park has 5 returning next year. Let that sink in.
Those two Young brothers are going to be the first two to run in the 13s next year.
Aaron too tbh. He's really not far off at all
How do you have a "record" time in XC where courses vary wildly?
right
there should only be course records
the 2 mile split was 8:58 commentators called out the 2.1 mile split on this video
Glad I read this, cuz I was doing the math and that would’ve meant their last mile was a sub 4 lmao
Run a 15 minute 5K and be 70th. Holy cow. Unreal. Rock on guys
65 boys under 15 min... WOW
my fastest 2 mile was 10:46 (which devastated my body), these guys made 9:41 look like a warmup
So at Newbury Park, some kids be like: well, I guess I will try out for that high school musical, after all...
What’s running lane?
That’s insane
I run xc and I’m a JR
I know this hurt SO BAD
I ran a PR and that meet and I felt so slow compared to them😭
How do these announcers not know that 9:41 is not insanely fast for this caliber and when they hear themselves say it multiple times, it still sounds correct to them? Geezus
it was actually the 2.10 marker they reached at 9:41. Hence, Colin ran a 4:23 for the final 1.0 mile.
Leo and Lex might break 14 this year!
Flying !!!!
What a coaches dream to land these 4 kids at Newberry park!
Who would have imagined a foot race ending in a foot race?
Somebody needs a camera upgrade...but way to go Panthers! Impressive!
And now these three Newbury Park runners, along with Collin's brother, have ANNIHILATED the national high school record in the 4 x 1 mile relay with a time of 16:29, breaking the 17:01 record by an astonishing 3.2%. That's four guys from the same high school averaging 4:07 miles.
W Aidan cox mention in the beginning
Its funny how Aidan barely even got mentioned bcuz of how unbelievable the NP guys were. If there was no NP Cox would've set the all-time junior record. Another kid set the sophomore all-time record.
Something is not right. The 2 mile [3218m] split was 9:41, which is 3:00/km pace [15:00 for 5 km]. They did not look like they picked up the pace to 2:30 /km pace [60s per 400m] for the last 2km. Even if the top runners did, all the rest could not have followed at the very high pace.
it was 2.1 miles
Poor Zane. He lives about 10 miles from me, and he'd be a national XC hero, if not for half of Newbury Park's team.
wow!!
California baby.
Are we ready to beat kenya???
i lost my shoe during that race hehe
Awesome race. Wish they swapped out the potato for a good camera though.
6:15, we just gonna act like we don't see that guy? twice?
Scary to think that the rest of the field only beat Newbury Park 26 to 29 if you used all other athletes vs their team. No way you'd know the correct 7 other runners to have chosen ahead of the race either so likely Newbury Park would have beat the All-Star team straight up.
super shoes!
Don’t even think I’d make jv at newbury
Crazy how Riley Hough never lost a race and in this one he lost to three guys all from the same high school. Imagine if he went to newbury high school as well omg
As a high school XC runner who was on varsity for a top 5 state team...what the actual fuck are these guys on??
How do they run 9:41 for the first 2 miles (4:50 pace) and then 14:04 for 5k (4:32 pace)? That would mean the last mile was 3:55. Either the entire race course is short or the 2 mile distance marker is long. The figures don't make sense.
9:41 was for 2.1 miles not 2 miles
The 2mile split is actually 2.1 if you look at the data field it says 2.1.
@@danielnalley3087 thanks for pointing that out. I was just listening to the announcer.
@@rrbearcat my son ran the race and I was looking online at his splits and standing at the 2mile mark and they didn’t match. That’s when I realized they had the pace mat at 2.1 miles so they could capture everyone’s last mile.
It’s going to be a race to the finish?!!…….
Rep the 805!!!!!
9:41 is not an insane 2 mile split. They actually had 8:58 at 2 miles. I was there, I know.
Saying a 9:41 2 mile split is not insane for HS runner is absurd... That's still sub-15 pace
How do you go through 2 miles at 9:41 then run 14:04? 4:50 pace for 2 miles but you average 4:31 the whole race? They would have to close their last mile at 4 flat pace??
You could be a 15 mid runner which would obviously be incredible and not even get a sniff at the Newbury team, this last year and next. Insanity
Why are we watching a race that is more than half over?
the video was very laggy
How could they finish with 14 lows knowing that they passed in the 2 miles mark (3200m) with 9:41?
They passed 2 miles at 8:58ish. That was the 2.1 mile area but the commentators messed up
Average slope of the final mile was downhill relative to the second mile. Not “downhill” in the normal everyday sense of the word, but enough to make a better relative pace.
858 for 2 miles not 941
Runninglane > Nike
Running Lane always the better course
@@CoReOmega no doubt. Nike missed out on the greatest xc team ever too.
so if their 2.0mi time was 9:41, did Colin really run 4:23 for the last 1.10 miles?
Nice to see the US boys breaking records, but they still have a long way to go. European and African boys have been and are far faster. For instance, Jakob Ingerbridtsen was a lot faster at the same age, Japhet Korir was 3rd in the World U20 CC when 16yrs.
Jacob was already running professionally at 17, and didn’t have to worry about school

Why is Colin brother always falling behind at the end?
He struggles at the end tbf. Guess it’s when they kick and leave him behind as a result
I think he’s just not his brother and the twins level yet. That’s why he just can’t keep up. Cause if you take out his older and twins. He wins every race this season lollll So it’s not like he can’t finish fast or whatever. I think he still needs put in some work. To finish with the other teammates
It must be a little frustrating to run 14:20 and be the 4th fastest guy on your team. He could win State in 49 other states.
Seriously, why even ask this question? The guy is one of the top 5-10 HS runners in the nation.
Not sure, seems like a middle distance guy by heart but MAN he raced so hard too, great strength
Aaron in this race pushed the pace for majority of it so that’s what got him winded at the end. He helped his teammates in positioning to go 1-2-3 at thats what matters

No it is 3.107 exactly
I got 3.14 on my watch
