yeah when their second hand cars were checked out by Mr. Manlove
no, thats the e30 challenge. they called him up during the sport saloon episode in germany
+Kristaps Zarins that's what I said. Now thinking about it, it wasn't ManLove who checked their cars. I distinctly remember it being a portable thing that their cars were checked inside of. Jeremy called up Martin from beneath the damn car
Watching this 13 years after it was made I can say he is spot on. that's crazy, if I wasn't 8 years old at the time u would've bought both hahah.
Only thing is now these rules don't always apply because pretty much anything old now gets stupid price tags on it 😂

Had you taken the advice of Hammond back then and bought the 190E 2.3-16, you would have a enjoyed an awesome car and sold it today at a likely significant profit.
Yup they've definitely gone up in value and are very sought after.
They’re still pretty cheap though. Compared to an E30 they’re next to nothing...the prices on e30s now are just stupid
@@p4vns433 Which is why my brother and I bought an E21 323 for £1200, A 635CSi for £1000 and a BMW E46 323ci for £600. Just a handful of years ago! 👻 What are the worth now? Well, I'm not telling you..
But I bought a Rover P6 V8 for £2000 on a whim around the same time, and my insurance valuation just came back at £10k. And that is a far less desirable car!

I love how Hammond calls the Merc a future classic in this series 2 episode. Thirteen seasons later, he completely rails against it during one of the Top Gear challenges.
90's Japanese sport cars almost perfectly fit into the category of being future classic cars,
They are now.
Impreza and EVO will be classics.
But you look like an immature dork driving them. Can’t be around successful people in those cars. Terribly embarrassing
@@niftycritter1870 allot of older gents have very nice jdm 90s turbos in my country

Quite funny when Hammond used that Brundle quote about the Merc, when in a later series May kept quoting that and Clarkson and Hammond did not believe him, and when Clarkson phoned Brundle he said he does not remember ever saying that. Ha ha
Yeah I thought the same thing lol
@Jay Leno So why did Hammond act like the car was not that great?
@Jay Leno I am british, you muppet. Yes I know this was before the episode where May said it (go read my original post, or is that too complex for you). Nothing to do with "British humour".. just another scripted portion of the show they forgot about from a past episode. It has happened many times before with Jeremy saying something in one episode and then seasons later saying the opposite.
@@CapHowdy yup. In the early series he said the new Honda Civic Type R in the news will be fantastic, but when he test drove it in 2007 he absolutely hated it. Same with the Peugeot 1007, had it in the studio and said it’s a brilliant small car, but then later on in the mum run he said it’s an absolute load of rubbish. Then when May and Hammond drove the Porsche Panamera against the Royal Mail Letter, they were talking about its ugliness afterwards and Hammond said he didn’t think it was that bad. The next series against the Maserati Quatreporte and Aston Rapide he said it looked absolutely hideous. Another more subtle inconsistency is when he tested a Škoda Yeti (which is actually classed as a crossover/SUV) and said it was an absolutely remarkable car and one of the most complete he’d ever driven, but then series later he banged on about how much he hates Crossovers and that they’re all terrible. It’s all for the script!
And he also said engine not that good
I didn’t realize Hammond had perpetuated that Martin Brundle myth about the chassis lol. Love that later episode where Jeremy calls him on the phone with Capt Slow and he says he never said that lol 😆
My prediction (made Monday, 8th of September 2019) is that the Fiat Coupe Turbo will absolutely skyrocket in coming years. It was lightning quick, it was quirky and Italian, it was and is still rare and it was really damn good. Its also one of the most unique looking cars I've ever seen

BMW E60 M5 (Garage Queen) will be a future classic. Imagine cars of future, either turbocharged 4 cylinders or EVs and you have this M5. How many sedans have been made with naturally aspirated V10?
close edge That doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a future classic. If you’re spending $100,000+ on a car, you don’t care
The E60 is a tough one. People liked it for its engine at the time, but it looked like a rental car and is, as far as anyone I've ever asked is concerned, the ugliest M5 ever. The engine is memorable, the fact its the last NA M5 is memorable, however they aren't reliable, and they aren't good looking, and from what I've read the gearboxes are absolute shite. It's one I could see going either way
Dan Evans Looks are subjective. I know that it definitely grew on me. It was also offered with a stick in the US, so I think a well kept manual one post LCI (better infotainment, headlights, taillights, etc) will be a future classic
The SW is even more desirable. They made much much fewer of them. I would go for it, no doubt.

Couldn't agree more. Future classics are super fun to speculate about. I've always maintained that the mk3 supra should be in that category. It's not an especially good sports car without lots of suspension work and much wider tires, but it makes an amazing GT car once you deal with all the issues to make it reliable. It's supremely comfortable for long trips and truly makes ME feel special, which is exactly what a car should do for an enthusiast.

+GunfightersINC I'd go for e60 or e34. E39 doesn't look as promising as e34(when M5 didn't have massive horsepower) or e60(biggest naturally aspirated engine by BMW). But still, it's from an era when BMW still made good and more or less reliable cars.
+Kaavs both great cars, time will tell.
One of the best Tope Gear piece. I really loved this.
Just had my Corrado G60 burned out. Some shortcircuit in the back while i was on the highway, only noticed it when the smoke started to fill my car as the fire was in the back. It was probably old wiring as the car was in almost new shape but had some electric issues with the lights in the cabin and trunk after I had the rear repainted. I watched it being burned starting from a small fire in the back to completely being destroyed by the fire. It broke my heart but still I want a new one. It happened a few days ago and I already miss the car, or even looking at it while it was parked. The engine is indestructible and mine had over 260 K miles on it. I had it for 13 years and once it got proper maintenance, I went through the yearly MOT without a hitch. It drives fantastic and the sound is so good, every week someone would walk up to me to tell me they love these cars as they look awesome as well.
I'm thinking of buying a VR6 now, Once you've driven these cars combined with the looks, it's fantastic. Plus the good ones maintain their value. One of the coolest productioncars ever made and VW did indeed know what they were doing. Ich lieb dich, mein Corrado.
Too bad it needed a war to build this great car.
Whoever thought the BMW M5 E60 was going to be a future classic back when it came out was 100% spot on. Unbelievably unreliable, but unbelievably fun and exciting. It was from the era where cars were at peak ridiculousness before electronic driver assistance features became overly abundant. Man, I miss the early 2000s
Yeah, even though it is a shit car with a relatively bad engine (due to unreliability issues but it is extremely good while it works) and a terrible gear box, they will go through the roof soon.
why not to buy a e34 m5? good fuel economy compared to e60 m5, good reliability, insane 6cyl sound. For an e60 you need to rob a fucking bank to afford it .....
@@boringstuff3463 first guy to agree with me, the v10 is a piece of garbage, the E34 is a tank with a proper best BMW engine the Inline-6
@@FEGTTTSDH Not really. The problem was never the engine, it was the oil used that was causing all the engine issues. The oil they used was way too thick so it had to be quite hot to work properly and since it mostly wasn't, it never flowed well enough to keep everything lubricated at all times. As a cause of that rod bearings and piston rings would seize, damaging the engine and sometimes even killing it completely. BMW never really admitted the error but they are now putting the correct oil into the cars that come in for service at their dealerships. The more you know...

Yes :D
I loved Top Gear just for one reason: in those days, Top Gear actually cared about cars. In a funny way, but it gave informations.
In the latest seasons it has become just a show for 3 comedians insulting people, acting like idiots and that like to waste stuff (I still suffer for that manual 928...), not giving informations about cars.
I hope that the new top gear version will be like the episodes in the previous decade: funny and hilarious, but still about cars.
Snarl616
I disagree about Top Gear not giving information. For instance, to me their review(s) of the Lexus LF-A is the best out there. You can google up all the information about the car, and plenty of other journalists will give better descriptions of the handling and other abilities of the car, but no-one connects the emotional value of owning/driving that Lexus to the audience nearly as well as Clarkson. Now that's information that you can only measure by how much of a human being you are.
donkgated Yes, but they also made some other really stupid reviews. See the old review of the Golf R32 vs the BMW 130i and then compare it to the new review of the BMWM135 vs Golf GTi to see what I mean. I also think that the Ferrari F12 and the Corvette C7 reviews are just not good enough.
Add this to all the scandals and the controversy they generated and you can see how Clarkson & co. in the last 1 or 2 years really were starting to get uninspired.
Snarl616
I don't understand the point you're trying to make about the VW and BMW comparos. In both instances Jeremy preferred the VW as the cheaper and more practical hot hatch that is 80-90% as fast as the BMW. That's the essence of both reviews.
Lol the new Top Gear was so bad, they had to throw the whole cast around after one short season. At least Chris Harris is top notch. Grand Tour is still better though, even for gearheads.
Well, everyone should have listened to this when it was first aired! Spot on with these two.
Especially the 190 E Cosworth - selling over £150k nowadays
My prediction as of September 2020 is that classic vaxhauls such as mk2 Astra gte nova Sri and mk3 Astra gsi will sky rocket because there are none left and you only have to look at the prices of nova gte‘s sand mk1 Astra gte’s to see how crazy the will go.
or the Honda NSX. because it is by far the best car Honda has ever made but for some reason, no longer produced

The c-series engine wasn't very good in the world of Honda...I mean it's beats most other engines when it comes to design and profomance but in the world of Honda it's kinda trash....if you was to swap it for a k-series with a big turbo and make 700hp then you have a real gem just my 2 cents.

Brundle most certainly did describe the 190 cosworth as the best handling rear drive chassis ever made; I remember it from a contemporary interview, talking about the cars he’d owned. It was a long list. It was published in CAR magazine, where J May was then a contributor.

I see the earliest Subaru WRX's as going that way in a few years as well. Not a lot of frills on them, but they were excellent cars and are still relatively speedy even today.
with no ABS etc there wont be many left......... you may find afew spare parts up a tree somewhere lol. early scoobys were what cars should be! just you and the car the tech that go into cars these days take the drive away
gingerbread man Should have specified those sold in the US. We only got the WRX in 2002 and it did have ABS by then. The front end design was a bit love it or hate it but it was at least a bit distinctive.
As far as I'm concerned, if it still has a mechanical throttle control, it's for me. I don't need a computer second guessing every little thing it do. Also, it's fun to be able to rev the engine while under the hood.
ILikeTheThingsIDo Prices in the UK have just started creeping up for the last of the GC/GF turbo models, but still easy to pick a decent one up for between £2,500 and £4,000. The problem is you find a lot of them have been modified in some way or another, mostly increased BHP upto around the 270 mark, where the bottom end becomes pretty vulnerable.
I agree, finding a stock one with low mileage is impossible
Big issue with the Subaru is its Japanese and Japanese cars, despite often being brilliant, often suffer quite a bit on value. Even the really valuable ones aren't as valuable as they should be, Supra, NSX and some GTRs withstanding. It might go up, but it might be a struggle to have it go up by much. I really struggle to figure out why this tends to be a trend with Japanese cars, maybe its the badge? Like who wants something memorable that is the same make as what my nan drives? Although people have no issues snapping up old Fords for stupid money
I just got a 04 crossfire. Still almost new. 6 years will be the 20 year time to be considered a classic:)
LOL at 4:20 ..... in the sports saloon challenge Richard and Jeremy both said that James was peaking utter tosh when he claimed Martin Brundal had said that the Merc had one of the best handling chassis!!
7 years later and none of those gained much value, especially Corrado VR6 that can be bought for £2000-£2500 in very good condition. Considering inflation it's not worth much more than when this show was aired.
+OhFishyFish This is from 2003
+Kieran White Doesn't matter, 2016 and there are plenty of VR6 on autotrader and ebay for under £3000. Whoever invested in them in 2003 is now rather disappointed. It's a 2-door Jetta.
+OhFishyFish I beg to differ. 190E Cosworth prices have pretty much doubled, close to tripled over the last 2 years (good luck finding a well kept one under £10k, used to be £4-5k not long ago) and they only seem to keep growing.
VW kombis are a completely different story.

If you compare the prices back when this clip was shot, to the current prices you would have made a bad deal right there. Instead of the Corrado you shold have bought an Audi S2 coupe, instead of the Mercedes E190 you would have been better off with a BMW 525 E12 or even better the Alpina B7 S Turbo. Though I have to admit that the E190 is also a very fine car.
Right now the merc is definitely more valuable than the e12. It could change depending on where you're located, but i've seen some e12's go for 10k to 35k€ while the price of a 190e cosworth is from 20k upwards to even 60k€.

My dad used to own a Corrado (can't remember the model, but I think it was the VR6). It was a truly amazing car that stuck with him for over a decade before it sadly died from age in the mid 2010's. I will never forget that car and the great speed it would achieve when he would go flat out.
The VR6 would actually hit 150MPH... so yeah it was quite a little rocket.

E36 M3 anyone? Like sure it's obvious, but c'mon, there are some biiiiiiiig things about it that came from the E30 M3, but NOT carried over to the E46 M3. This kind of made it the last of the "smaller, less powerful M3's" that weren't focused on how much power was put to the ground, but rather how (This is still an opinion though)... Idk I thought it was at least worth a mention, but these were nice too
This is a really old episode.

E30 yes. E36 no. I'd sooner bank on the E46 being a classic than the E36.
M, AMG and RS/S cars are always potential classics if original and well kept. But the real value is in the special editions, like Black Series or CSL. All others will eat profit with maintenance cost.
By now you are actually right. Only downside is the fact that most of them are driven to destruction. But a mint one today is much more expensive than 5 years ago.

kristenburnout1 The GTA is practically already a classic, it's value is stable since last few years, when the regular 156's, those in hands of average joe will be gone the value will go up substantially. That's practically the same story for every modern Alfa in past 50 years. Hell, it's already happening to the 155 Q4.
I'd love a Alfa with a V6
Any Alfa with that Busso V6 will go up, the engine was brilliant, one of Alfas finest. The 147 GTA I think will go up more because its a mental hot hatch that with a bit of work is regarded by many as the best front wheel drive car ever made
I know a good future classic. The smart roadster
i've got a 92 e36 325 coupe and im pretty proud to be stepping out of that
I bought a Corrado VR6 just after seen this video. I just sold it 12 years later. Awesome car.
Subaru Impreza WRX (STI) 2002-2007
That's a future classic. Especially ones that are world rally blue and have those forged gold coloured wheels.
***** Most (if not all) car's prices drop a little while after their debut before their prices begin to climb once again. The WRX STI really isn't that old and could still easily be on the decline. Compared to most cars, Subarus hold their value extremely well and a while back I found an '02 WRX Bugeye and the seller wanted $10,000 for it which is really saying something when the car is 14 years old now. So personally I think WRX (STIs) will become a future classic especially considering the unique engineering in them, the race heritage and the fact that it's getting harder and harder to find them stock.
+Kevin Brun If you want the real deal look at Ford! A mk2 escort was a few hundred quid 30 years ago and now for a good condition basic model you are at least 4-5k. Then look at the rs, sport and mexico models selling for up to £30k.
You do have to factor in inflation though.
2 door one is rare so should be a classic
Primarily because most of them have been riced to oblivion. Basically any good sports car that 95% of its owners modify goes up in price after 10 years because it is so rare to find one that still has its original parts.
The VR6 Corrado in good condition is almost impossible to find. All of them driven to shit by boyracers.
The 190E Cosworth is rare and prices are climbing. No idea why Richard recommended a auto for a drivers car.
I'd say the next future classic will be the MX-5.
Joe Barbaro
people say that, but there are so many MX-5s still around, so values won't be rising extravangantly. The Cosworth Mercedes is rare as you point out, hence the value increasing.
donkgated The first MX-5 model with the flip up headlights was in production for 10 years. According to wikipedia 900.000 MX-5 models were sold by 2011.
MX-5 model is still in production, it got some upgrades over the years, but in style its still very similar to the first model from 1989. No model really stands out, so why would someone rather want a second hand early model than a brand new mx-5 thats better equipped, has no milage, better engineered etc?
The MX5 is a classic in the same way the nokia 3310 is a classic, its great stuff but there's just too much of them around. And theres too little that makes an early model so special that its worth to pay up for.

Yes, that large production number is generally my point - at the moment. Though in maybe 10 years when more and more are seeing the scrapyard and you happen to have an original, largely unmodified example in good condition, maybe then it will be worth something.
I wouldn't say that in style all the gens are very similar - you'd have to say the same for the Mini and Porsche 911, but that didn't stop some of the old ones becoming a classic.
1. this is 12 year old piece of video 2. the mx5 is wayyy too common
I reckon the Audi rs5 they are going out of production.
Ford Focus RS, Fiat 124 Spider, Alfa Romeo 4C, Shelby GT350, Porsche Boxster Spyder, Audi RS7, VW Jetta GLI, BMW 8 Series, BMW M2, Chevrolet SS, Fiat 500 Abarth, Smart Roadster, VW Phaeton, Ferrari FF, Honda S2000, Lexus LFA, BMW i8 etc. etc.
i was proud stepping out of my redtop calibra.
u watch your mouth hammond! Probe's are AWESOME!!! lol
Ahh mercedes. Unkillable (talking about old 1980-2000 models), fast, classical, rwd.. They're perfect!
rusty
@@laurentheinen6941 Name a car that isnt
@@ansgaming5807 Audi 80
Laurent Heinen Bullshit, they rust as all others
@@ansgaming5807 They rust a lot less, many of Thema are still in excellent condition
Some of what Hammond said in this episode is referenced in Season 15 when James bought a 190.
buying my first car in a couple of months and hoping to get a Corrado. wish me luck, I have a 6k budget so I should find one!
190e, very yes
automatic, lol no
Probably because the manual has a dog-leg gearbox.
Well Richard wasnt wrong, these cars are very pricey today.
That Merc is the car James had in the Track day challenge, His car had a smaller engine tho, the 2.3
My old coworker used to have one. Such a cool car.
