    Every time I hear anything about student loans and interest rates and how hard it is for newly graduates to pay them off I become increasingly happy that I live in Sweden where education is completely free, unless you apply to a privately owned institution, and where the interest rate on student loans hover around the 0.05% mark most years. Being hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for multiple years would definitely give me crippling depression short after finishing my education.

    I’m so glad this video exists because it let’s so many people know what to expect when making big life decisions that not a lot of people actually go to in detail about.
    While not applicable to my situation as I was fortunate to have my parents cover a portion of my tuition; I also lived at home with them and commuted to school, and lastly worked/studied from home. I did all this simply to avoid student loan debt because I knew from the get go that a bachelor’s degree in fine arts wasn’t going to get me anywhere without having the skills and portfolio to back it up - which fortunately now as I’m in my final year of school, I can confidently say I do.
    So while I did sacrifice a lot of experiences like travelling, moving out, etc… I honestly am in a better position now financially than I have ever been because of the choices of my past self. :)

    Great vid! I first worked as a draftsman and then paid for school. I work full time and go to school part time. Im ok with getting my degree at 27. No debt and I am able to enjoy my 20’s still being able to travel and party. If you can live with your parents then do that. that will definitely help you save big time as you also want to put money into a Roth IRA while you are in your 20’s

    Speaking of ocean-bound plastic, a little piece of plastic was in the salmon I ate for lunch! I thought it was a bone when I was chewing. Nope! Even as an aware environmentalist who washes and sorts all spent materials, I was surprised. It was like: "THE PROPHECY IS TRUE!". I kept the little piece of plastic as a reminder.
    On a more related note, you did an excellent job. Many people dig a massive debt hole for themselves that enslaves them for many years. To any young people reading, it's best to pay with your own money. Work and save as early as you can and work through college. It's possible to pay as you go one semester at a time if you manage your time and budget right. Financial aid and scholarships make this significantly more manageable if you qualify for them. Please don't make a habit of borrowing money; most people bight off more than they can chew.

    it's a shame how architecture is one of if not the most demanding fields during studies and after graduation, yet it is one of the least rewarding. so, when i hear stories of success such as yours i just lift up but still feel sad that it comes with many other struggles on top of the struggle that is architecture. anyways, i feel blessed too. immensely. compared to the west, in my culture parents pay for your tuition... you also live with them, that "by 18 get out" mindset is nonexistent. so i feel grateful to have had that. my goal is to work and be able to provide for my family. i don't want my mom to lift a finger for the sake of money anymore. i hope that becomes my own success story lol. thank you for these videos, they're super encouraging and i learn a lot 🤍 i pray we all make it!

      @Entertainless distribution center in California, won’t say what company, but it was very few duties beyond just shove all the product, safely, into a freight truck. In late 2008, they were paying 13 an hour. When I left in early 2012, it was close to 17. Work/life balance was just an idea basically. 10-12 hour shifts were a normal thing. So beyond necessary expenses, gas, food, maintenance on my car, paying my share of rent and the monthly pair of new boots, remaining of my income went into my savings account.

    I’m not sure if it’s the same in Canada but a lot of US firms do not allow “moonlighting” (like my first job). So you’d have to freelance in like photography like you mentioned - not architecture. Also some parents charge rent or bills for their like 25 year old child to move back in if they allow them at all…

    Hello, Ms. Dami!
    I'm an architecture undergrad student currently studying in the Philippines. I've taken a great amount of interest in your work, especially in your Master's Thesis project. I was wondering if you could discuss more comprehensively about the exact nature of spatial design in relation to a user-based experience? I would also like to ask if you are familiar with this architectural theory I recently stumbled upon called the "Aleatoric Milieu" which also highlights the importance of proxemics and navigation-design in space planning. I was wondering if you could give any thoughts or discussions regarding this theory, as I trust that it is in your expertise and it would be interesting to hear your ideas about it.
    Thanks and I wish you all the best and more power to your content!

    I think it's bullshit that literally every aspiring architect nowadays has to have multiple jobs to make ends meet. We are the only professional field that has to live like peasants before the grandmasters deem us worthy of a crumb of a decent livable wage. Why did I go to school for 5 years and currently work in New York City and I still can't afford to move out of section 8 housing? This profession needs some serious restructuring if it wants to survive in a meaningful way in America.

    Yeah, I'm sorry, but HP doesn't give a damn about the environment. Case in point, look up their ink cartridges and how anti-consumer and wasteful they are. They contain virtually no ink (literally a slightly damp piece of foam) and comes with an ID chip to prevent you from using third-party cartridges.
    Heck, it gets even worse, check out Louis Rossman's channel where he showed a case where an HP printer would refuse to scan documents because it had no ink and another case where you had to subscribe to their ink subscription program just to use the included spare cartridges.
    How is forcing people to buy their wasteful product environmental? Corporations DO NOT have morals.

    • @DamiLeeArch
      @DamiLeeArch  2 года назад +4

      This is a question that can open up a massive can of worms, but I think the core of it is that architects throughout history have not been great at communicating the value of their work, so we traditionally underprice our services. I hope / think we are realizing this and making some big changes.

    • @reemb6571
      @reemb6571 2 года назад +3

      @@DamiLeeArcha very interesting perspective. I often wonder whether our work truly impacts people's lives or whether we were taught to overestimate the importance of design. I look at indigenous and native cultures and it sometimes seems like societies intrinsically know what they want and need and their environments reflect that. Sometimes when architects dwell on the scene they unfortunately destroy the existing character of a place because we live in a studio environment completely detached from reality and people. It's a paradoxical situation.

    📺💬 How do I pay back debt from the intern architect within 2 years.
    🥺💬 That is hard and present of ability, I pay my school semester fees by myself too because in my country that is not a high amount of fees, it is about 600 to 700 dollars for computer engineering and of course, I learn in English. I agree that if I have more money I could go abroad and have life experience or apply to a famous school. My sister also does the same but she goes aboard to India where Philosophy and the national relationship are name subjects for the school.
    📺💬 You can do as me do
    🥺💬 Yes, that is the great option you selected I could do I know you in person when now I had a Master's degree and I took exam certificates for free as it's a promotion 49$ per month and 7 days free trials. 🥺💬 I am not to promotions them I had passed 50 and more certificates with professional levels in data science, Advance data science, IT Backend developer and Tensorflow developer, and project management.
    📺💬 Anyone working on fulfilled my life as me.
    🥺💬 That is a great option and please keep continuing there are many people doing on their tracks try to be in the best position for themself and possibly give a great opportunity to next. 🥺💬 Everyone doing the same but do not forget to spare some time with love and family.

    Priceless topic Dami. I also relished in the great luxury life of solitary confinement with my parents during internship. But I don’t think they much appreciated the basket of a dozen 4-karat diamonds in my 18k gold pinky ring rent-free….and my color-matching Ferragamo shoes…🫣Career focus!? But I did manage to pay off my loan in a little over 3 years by moonlighting at various firms as a CAD Specialist. The key is definitely to beat down that compounding interest as quickly as you can afford and also invest in your firm’s success.
