    Dear Kamon, add to your sugar syrup 0,2g/l of thymol + citric acid (pH good for bees). Thymol has to be dissolved in 95% alcohol first, then you can keep your syrup tightly closed for many months. BTW they did studies on low pH syrup and it is better for wintering bees. I live in harsh climate in the mountains. Greetings from Poland.

    • @kaistumer198
      @kaistumer198 3 года назад +1

      first dissolve in alcohol, then add water with dissolved lecithine

      Hi, I want ask you what weight of citric acid do you use

    • @ThEcLoUdBuStEr
      @ThEcLoUdBuStEr 3 года назад +1

      @@fercho9003 my goal is ~4pH of syrup. You have to buy strips to measure pH of liquid, then add what you need like ~10 teaspoons citric acid on 100 liters, but it depends on your water (parameters), so you have to measure it.

      My Dad use to say to me as a kid "Sometimes less is more". While watching your video loading up your nucs I was just once again floored at how you manage your mites. I know there are some frustrations with wintering that far north but gee wiz I wish we produced as few mites as you all do in your short season. All well, I guess I will just have to comfort myself with getting to fool with bees longer.

    I have always found answers on questions about "essential oils" to be lacking. Over the years I have not seen those pushing the "natural" methods to not have a great success rate. I am not saying that a particular substance has no value, but that those promoting them tend to not have good answers.

    Thanks Kaman. I'm in my second year and had my first hive robbed a week ago. I do add a teaspoon of Honey b Healthy to my sugar water (it smells great) but you're right, I never thought how the smell can promote robbing. The things we learn from you experienced beekeepers. Thanks again!

    I jumped on the essential oils band wagon years ago and thought I was doing good.Well I ran out one day and had a drum of syrup made up so I just used it without oils.Well there was no difference with or without the oils.I feed nothing but sugar syrup now.

    Thanks K&L for the video. It didn’t have your normal ending so I’m just wondering if it didn’t all upload. I had some sugar syrup ferment and a friend put it on one of my 5 frame nucs and they absconded. The bad syrup was the only thing that I could figure why they left. Since then I’m very careful with it and don’t mix it until I’m putting it on the hive. Please ask Ian approximately how many tons of honey did he harvest this season. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I appreciate all the valuable info that is provided by you and Ian. My question is about Marketing what does a commercial beekeeper need to sale his honey for per pound to be profitable? how can the industry make more money per pound to compensate you hard working people for this priceless commodity? You guys got bees figured out "bee guru's" treatments queens flows extracting your so smart. I hope you can discuss with our friend up north strategies to increase profitability. Please use some time in your think tank tonight to improve your bottom line. All the hard work in the world is for not if you can't make money. I look forward to the collaboration :)

    Hey Kamon, was that a chicken in your arms or were you just happy to see me post?
    I use bleach in my summer feed, but feed straight sugar, maybe with vitamins and electrolytes added, in my winter feed. Have never had a problem with fermentation. Empty jugs get a bit moldy if not washed out though.
    Looking forward to you and Ian chatting.

    Randy Oliver Scientific beekeeping has an article on adding bleach to syrup. Studies have been done and showed bees lived longer with bleach added at a certain ratio. The article is a good read and can be found on his site. I have used 1tbsp per 5 gal for years and no ill effects. The chlorine bonds chemically with the sugar when mixed.

    You make some very good points. I used a little bleach with my bees feed this spring, but it was more due to my circumstances. My hives are about an hour’s drive from my house so I wanted to be able to put out at least a week worth of feed at a time (started from packages) so they would have plenty to build comb with. In retrospect, I’m pretty sure they took it slower than they did when I trickle fed them through the dearth with unbleached syrup so it probably didn’t have as much benefit as I thought it would.
    If you give them a gallon a week doesn’t really matter if it takes them 3 days or 7 days to suck it down. It’s still a gallon a week...

    Do you feed your strong colonies that are for honey production with this syrup? Does the quality of honey degrade significantly? I have gone the entire year without any and the honey I sell to people has gotten absolutely ecstatic reviews. Someone who bought a jar in the morning texted me saying they need another one delivered that same evening because they already ate the whole thing! Meanwhile the beekeeper who helped me get started feeds his colonies plenty of syrup and when I tried some of his honey it was no competition to what I was producing, not even close! We are housing our apiaries in very different environments so it may be entirely due to that. Thank you Mr. Reynolds & Family for all these great videos!

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  3 года назад +1

      We feed any colony that needs it. Some do some don't. We won't place honey supers till April. This will all be long gone before then and the honey supers are not on the hives. Literally a handful of miles can make all the difference in the taste of your honey. Some areas honey isn't that good. Sugar syrup tastes like sugar and has no flora notes. We sell barrels of pure honey each year and it all goes in 2-1 lb jars and we don't even need to advertise. If you have a great tasting honey and the prices aren't too high you can sell literal tons.

      @@kamonreynolds Yes, absolutely. Its fascinating how you can see all the factors playing out right in front of your eyes. Everything about beekeeping is so awesome (besides that time I almost died from getting 40-50 stings at once) 😅. And I am also lucky to be distributing my product in the New York City metropolitan area which is full of wealthy folks who love all natural things, letting me get away with some rather healthy prices for the ol' wallet as well!

    Wondering Ian, when you have most of your value chain, in-house, why don't you go further: packing, extending branding to consumer level and distributing. In this way: giving work wintertime, yielding more working positions and increasing turnover and hopefully increasing profitability?

    As far as I know yeast is responsible if things starting to ferment. Also higher temperatures and low temperatures can slow or even stop the fermentation processes until the right temperatures return to the level where yeast can thrive again.
    Anyone know if this is right?
