I love your channel. It has everything. Your tutorials are always clear and there is no waste of time. Most videos I have to skip through to get to the point.
Are there any other settings that need to be considered ? I've tried this a dozen times on different midi tracks and I cannot get it work. Any ideas I'm using version 5.941/64
Check that your MIDI track is sending to another. If so, you will need to apply a Volume envelope on that track. Looks weird because the track looks empty, but that's what was happening with my Kontakt strings.
Thank you for your great videos, Kenny! I'll try one question here: is it possible to fade in and out the volume of a long single note (or chord) played by a VST instrument...(strings or Hammond, for instance)...? Of course you can't do it by effecting the velocity... Thank you in advance for your kind attention!
Excellent video - I also use the workaround/trick for the "fade in not starting from zero"... but... for some reason I never thought of applying these techniques to MIDI!! Really useful, will use this idea right away! Also, I did not know about the drag-drop way of rendering. Nice!
It depends on the vsti you're using. Some vsti sounds may not respond to velocity input. Also, If you play a long midi note, the volume won't change throughout the duration of the note, only the initial velocity will be affected. If either is the case, you'll have to adjust the Volume Envelope (keyboard shortcut "V") to achieve your desired results.
Great video! I have a question: how do you do a velocity fade-in for long, held notes, like you typically encounter in string section parts? It would appear velocity can only change from one note to another, and not for one note lasting more than a beat. Is there any way velocity can be brought up gradually on one note? For instance on a 1/2 note starting piano and soaring up to fortissimo?
@@mateusrodolfo98 That doesn't gradually fade out a single long sustaining note. I've been trying to figure out how to fade out a long sustaining note but can't find a solution.
Hi Kenny. Need your help. Watching your video on fading in with Reaper, I find that when I try to set a fade on an analog track, it works fine. But when I try this on a MIDI track it seems to do nothing (using a Podolski FX for example). The only way to add a fade in is by showing the volume track and creating edit points. Unfortunately they are linear only though. I believe there is a magical setting in Reaper which i am missing. On a personal note, Reaper must be the bet app as far a support. Your video's are amazing and I certainly promote Reaper to anyone I can!
Excellent ! Wasn't aware that you could render MIDI Items as you did on 2.01. I thought that trick could only be done with AUDIO Items. Again, learned something valuable from you so thanks for that Kenny ! Warm Regards.
What am I doing wrong. I'm using Kontakt and I've got about 8 midi string instruments going. At the end of the section I want one of the long notes from the violin to fade. I've tried using both mod wheel and velocity automation, but neither cause it to fade. Any ideas?
I just learned it's so easy to just RENDER each set set 4 bars or 8 of MIDI then Render them in a track alone to Stereo or Mono whatever you want. Then you can work without Midi Notes going on and on because of a VST or not. Then you can decide to use the leftover ringing and have control to end it or not. Then Glue that part to any other and split it at the Measure you want and Presto you have silence, carrying on or whatever. YEAH use the MIDI and then RENDER IT. STOP all the NOISE! LOL God Bless.
Doesn't work with my version (Sep 17th 2021) neither with the older ones. That's why i was looking for a solution. Your videos are sooo helpful though.
In my case I just have one note (velocity). It just don't work. There's not any sequence to fade, the note stays at the same Volume. Forgive my English, great video!
When I apply fades to Midi tracks, nothing changes, even if I render out the track as seen here at 2.01 it doesn't change anything? Is it instrument specific or a setting I need to change?
This simply isn't working for me. I put the fade in/out on my midi piano track and it shows the red fade in but there's no change in the volume at all. Same when I open the midi editor. Nothing is changed. Help
How to change from altering velocity of a midi file to altering volume? And quest. 2: i managed to make a fade out but don't hear a difference. Anyone?
Question - I'm using Trumpets VSTs from VSCO2 Orchestra pack. I've created a track using it but the fade-in/out function doesn't affect the sound at all i.e. there is no audible difference when applying the fade. Any tips?? Thanks!
Help, not working here on midi track. I use reasynth. What to do? Dont want to use envelope. Would like to fade like on other tracks, dragging corner of item....
So, I've been using Reaper for months and constantly fading stuff for my applications like shown at the beginning of this video. I went to work on a project today and that fade symbols suddenly no longer appears and I can't figure out how to fade anymore. I've used that same tool in numerous audio and video editors but suddenly in Reaper, it is just a half box with an arrow running through it that allows me to stretch or shrink the item. No fade is available no matter how perfectly on the corner I put the mouse. Any ideas?

Alright, it goes well with a few MIDI notes in some part of time. But what to do when we have one long single MIDI note (ex. at the end of the song) and whe want to fade it out? Is that possible? It's not working for me.
through MIDI CC 07 Volume MSB or 11 Expression MSB but these may not affect velocity, only volume and also volume automation as was already mentioned in the comments or you may try modulating velocity over time with 01 Mod Wheel MSB CC message, not sure whether this will work

Yes! I found the issue... well for me any way. When using ReaSamplOmatic5000, I had to set the Min vol to -inf.

@@WmBarrettSimmsMusic I know this was 4 years ago but thank you so much!!
So how come this doesnt work for my midi track?
It works for most of my VST instruments, but does nothing for others. I have no clue why lol. You can use the volume method instead though.
Hi, Did you ever find a solution?
That’s neat, Kenny. Thanks as always!
I didn't know! Now I do! Thanks Kenny!

@@jrfoster1980 is it a midi track or audio track?
