    Hey Boo, you made the comment a couple of times that it's hard to get over 90% with a flute. I don't know about that. The first time I ran a sugar wash through my Mile Hi 4" 6 plate flute I got 95% all the way through the hearts by accident cause I sure as hell didn't know what I was doing. Now that I've had the still for just about a year I consistently get 95% on my vodka runs. I very rarely run it in the pot still mode, I tune it for more flavor and lower proof by removing plates. I've got to say this still was the best purchase I ever made. I am still learning and I am very much looking forward to your future video on running a flute still. I learn new things every time you put out a new video. Thanks, dude!

      That's awesome to hear and Austin at Ballmer Peak shared a similar story which makes me think I'm misinformed about how hard it is to achieve 190 proof. I've tried a few times about 5 years ago but I was less experienced then. I'm overjoyed the unit works so well for you, brother! Thanks for your continued support and your compliments! Let me know if I can help you with anything, man. I'll be here!

    This is some gloriously nerdy knowledge. I feel like I'm in a buddy's neighbour's garage getting the full introduction while doing some mildly confused pondering. My suggestion is taste stuff at different points of exercise. Ive noticed my first half of my whiskey pint hits different than the second half cuz I walk a few blocks after relieving myself and chugging some water. Random knowledge from other substances: your tongue can taste the blood that runs through it, yet you dont percieve most flavors... unless you know, then you know.

    So I see who got the last funnel. Lol. Good video wish we could make it to Colorado but that’s along trip from North Carolina. Maybe one day. The infusion spirals came today can’t wait to try them. Keep it brother.

      I've gotta dip into our stock a little bit sometimes, unfortunately! If you ever make it down, let us know and we'll give you a tour of our shop and we can chat! Enjoy the spirals, brother and thanks for your support. Also, looks like my supplier is out of the funnels which means it's going to be a little longer than a week before they're back in stock. I'll check back with them every few weeks to check their stock and order them when they have them in.

      I think this is a GREAT video idea! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll start coordinating a production schedule with Ballmer Peak Distillery on this. Would you like a shoutout for the suggestion on the video? You can reply to me here or send a private email to milehidistilling@yahoo.com and let me know the info you'd like included and I can do that. Howard suggested this video and only wanted his first name, but I can shout out whichever way you'd like.

    Hey Boo, Great series with a lot of information....and hands on to show everyone. My one thought is with the "heads" removal....Having run industrial distillation for a long time in the "chemical" industry, hobbyist need better understand the heads/methanol does magically jump out of the "POT". It takes a lot longer and needs to be run SLOW to concentrate at the start. For a 16 gal pot, to concentrate the methanol even with "reflux" ( reflux ratio is SOO long on small stills) should seriously take 60+ mins... In an industrial setting on start-up a column/Still are put on Total reflux to concentrate overhead lights, then take a shot off.....and reconcentrate. If this reflux only, and "shots" method is used....the amount of "loss" in the heads can be reduced dramatically, also the light component flavor's can be concentrated as well..
    I know long winded, but something to think about.... And HARD to do with a pot still, other then real LOW heat input to allow reflux to come from natural cooling on the metal verse a reflux condenser
    CHEERS

      Man, very detailed, thanks for the awesome notes. I'll have to find a time where Ballmer Peak can have me for a little while longer during the day and really try to focus on this process. Appreciated!

    How do you deactivate the plates I'm curious

    • @milehidistilling1
      @milehidistilling1  Год назад +1

      Your best bet would just be to take them out if you're trying to de-activate them. You can put all the caps onto one side of the plate to de-activate them because you plug them up when you do this, but I would call it safe and just take them out.

  • @hondo2757

    So you put 3 sections without bubble plates

    Boo any thoughts on which orientation the onion head goes? I have seen them both ways. The Helmet counts as a reflux as well as a plate does it not? Also You stated that in pot still you tossed out the Heads or Forshots and you don't have to do that when you rerun it in Flute mode. I think that's incorect because forshots is still in the product and is released during the rise in temperature process? Please correct me if I'm incorrect. Ok have another question why run a pot still run for a neutral sprit run ( I know you get flavor) and then run a finish run in flute mode which strips flavor. Why not run two rund in flute mode? Nubie here obious with all the silly questions. I have your 16gal setup with two plates, Helmet, sight glass and a 12" copper extension, and the Dephlegmator. If I wanted to run in pot mode, I call it my hibrid with twin 5500 watt elements. Also considering making a 5 gal thumper if I run in pot still mode. Wanting to run Rums and brandys and whiskies. I incorperated an all copper arm and elbow and condenser. all 3" except for the shotgun condenser which is 1.5 " Hope to be mashing in in a couple of months. Trying to learn before I start making mistakes.

      After you have tossed forshots (methanol) and heads from a batch, they are gone forever, and there is no need to toss again if you do another run (unless you screwed up and missed some)
      I too have seen the onion both ways, not sure which is right/wrong

    • @milehidistilling1
      @milehidistilling1  Год назад +2

      I've seen both orientations, but I think the way they're designed in the "onion" design with the larger diameter at the bottom is more appropriate. I don't think you'd see much difference if you flipped that, though, so to each their own.
      As the comment below mentioned, foreshots are gone once they're cut out and won't resurface from an increase in temperature.
      As far as the pot still in a neutral run, this was PURELY just to showcase the flute in pot still mode. Typically you would run just once in flute reflux mode or even twice in flute reflux mode.
      Love the setup, man! Sounds like you're doing it right with your setup!

    10% low wines and 8 bubble plates seems to absolutely piss out 190 proof azeo 😬

      @milehidistilling1  Год назад +1

      Haha! Not naming any names, but you may be on the right track. That's great to know an 8-section system can do it relatively easy. I was a little worried about a 6-section being able to do it consistently, but feel much more confident being able to keep consistently at 190 proof first run after talking with Ballmer Peak Distillery for a little bit about it. I'm going to attempt to do 190 proof first pass in a future video instead of "cheating" with a stripping run like I've done with this run.
