Thanks for posting. Nice to see some war footage from the other side with mariners at work and at play. Cool 40's technology, too. Who knew that they sunk enemy ships with explosives, and saved the crews from certain death?

It's the Hilfskreuzer Widder. This raider sink the Fininish sailing barque Killoran. The sailing ship, though owned by a neutral state, was carrying goods for Britain, making it a legitimate target. Minute 19:30

My late father's cousin was the sole survivor of an attack by one of these auxiliary cruisers. He was C/E of the SS "Arabistan" which was sunk in 1942 by the auxiliary cruiser "Michel". There were two survivors out of a crew of over 40, picked out of the water by the "Michel" the next morning. They were subsequently handed over to the Japanese, the other survivor, a 17 year old Deck Cadet didn't survive Japanese captivity.

I was in Graf,W.Germany in '77 and Love Every minute I wasnt on Duty. The Iron Curtain was impressive to say the least and the Beer was awesome. cannot say anymore publicly

This film has been made by combining footages of several different ships. That’s why some of the raids seen here were not by Kormoran.

If this is 1940 it canot be the Kormoran as she did not sink a ship named King John, also Kormoran did not sail until 10 December 1940, My 2nd cousin went down wit hthe Sydney Con Smith RIP

Valparaíso is in Chile Republic, not in Uruguay. The Graf Spee, a combat ship, was sunk by order of his Captain, Capt Hans Wilhelm Langsdorff in Rio de la Plata waters, close to Montevideo (Uruguay) Little time after Capt Lagdorff comitted suicide in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Not really. Kormoran went down after sinking the Australian light cruiser Sydney. But most of Kormoran’s crew survived the battle and were saved by other ships. Nobody survived from Sydney though.

I've seen the film of the sinking barque before in a 1960's documentary about the First World War, which suggests that it was actually filmed during the first world war and the film was reused here by the film makers.

Very nice the German sailors. Did you know that the US and the British gave an order forbidding the rescue of German sailors in distress?
