Thanks for the update. I agree that EA has kind of ghosted the community on what's happening. It feels like the company is severely under-resourced and just not in a position to deal with a crisis. I say it in basically every charging video, but I've had great luck lately with EVgo using Autocharge on my Bolt. While EVgo's old 1st gen hardware has questionable reliability, the new Delta units are generally solid. Just wish EVgo had the distribution of stations across the US that EA does.

Last night a Tesla driver was (unsurprisingly) waiting for me to leave so he could use the Volta (now I guess Shell?) charger.
I politely shared with him the knowledge that there is now a CCS-to-Tesla adapter and he could've used any of the 4 empty EA chargers at the corner of the parking lot. He wouldn't have had to wait and he would get a faster rate of charge.
His reply, "yeah you have to pay for those chargers and this is free."
So once again, the guy who bought the expensive car cries pauper when those of us who have no choice but to use hard-to-find J1772 chargers are constantly blocked by Teslas. FYI, there are Tesla Superchargers just a short distance down the road.
I don't know which annoys me more, that Teslas driven by cheapskates are constantly hogging the J1772 chargers or that car manufacturers don't have CCS as the default connection in every PHEV/BEV. At home J1772 is fine and on the road, you would use the CCS.

YOU and wife team are making the changes and I think you. I'll never get an EV, but you are making the progress through these video. And they will get attornies- it's kind of obvious they got the government funding, put up dead charging stations, and you challenge them. OUTSTANDING. If we could get someone like you to challenge the battery makers for our cars/diesels! Memphis area has been in ice for 3 days, I plugged in my diesel heater block for the 24-26 degree nights. I believe the batteries, 1 yr old, would flat die at 5 degrees, forget lower. When I cranked the voltage bounced from 14 to 11v for 5 minutes. Here's a question before I leave- Memphis has had 3 hour interstate blockages, several a day, for these 3 days due to ice. And 1 day for protestors blocking I55 at the Memphis Bridge for several hours. How do these EV handle stopping in 24 degrees for 3 hours work? Can they actually provide heat and radio during this? Assuming they are not at full charge, as winter takes some 50% power away, I assume the people are cold? Thanks for what you're doing.

All chargers worked just fine with no waiting at any stop. Trip back through Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas was all at temps in low single digit temps. Charging on the way back were never higher than 50 - 60 kw, after warming up. Sure could have needed to watch you video on conditioning the ID4 before hand, but now I know. ID4 performed flawless, except 1 time when the Navigation and radio went dead. These were cured by turning the car off and walking away and coming back to reset the car, this done at the next charge point.

I’ve yet to get one of the newer EA chargers to work on my Ioniq5. Haven’t tried in the past few weeks though, so maybe they’ve done something to gets them to actually work now.
Regarding the charger frying an EV, highly unlikely but possible. It would pretty much have to happen through the communications part of the link. No way it would happen through the charging portion (at least on a DCFC, may be possible if AC charging). If anything got weird over the DC charging connection, the car would open the contactors and effectively disconnect the battery from the charger within a split second. The communications lines, however, that kind of depends on what the vehicle manufacturer has installed as far as circuit protection. If nothing, than the charger could potentially send higher that designed voltage through the circuit and damage whatever module controls charger communications on the car. That said, if a charger “fried” car through the communications line, it would also likely fry the charger as well, since the communications circuits in the charger are not going to be designed for higher than specified voltages either.

You could not be more correct, the lack of transparency by Electrify America amplies the problem. Most of the car manufacturers suffer from the same problem (I am looking at you Kia and the battery preconditioning issue for pre-June 2022 USA built EV6s). In this day and age it is mind-boggling that companies do not understand the need for effective communication. If you are working on it but don't have a solution yet just state the extent of the issue, how hard it is to fix and an expected fix or update.

Yeah EA has been very out of touch here in Southern California too. So many chargers that have been broken for months on end now, or new stations that have been done for 3+ months but not taken online. When I call their support and tell them that two out of three stations are down, they tell me that they know and that the repair order is in. But if I ask how long until it gets repaired and I tell them it's been down for months, they have no answer. I do feel bad for their phone support agents, they're probably getting sick and tired of hearing it. So now whenever I get to a station where half or more of the stations are busted I just leave bad reviews on plugshare/google maps in the hopes it gets EA's attention.

If one owns an EV, charges at home, and drives locally, it’s all very workable. 2. If any level of long distance driving is necessary or desired, EV ownership becomes a hobby, and not always a fun one, depending on the level of predictability and excitement one finds tolerable.

thanks kyle, you are doing a huge service for early EV adopters and all future EV drivers. it is always good to hear good news and updates, but I want them to come from EA! considering that EA has become the defacto "only option" in many areas for staying safe and warm while on extended road trips in the USA with electric vehicles, they have a public duty and responsibility, whether they like it or not, and should be required by law to give accurate/timely reports about charger function, availability, etc. These are public safety issues for people travelling in EVs in the cold weather and should be treated as such. In the event of unexpected hardware/software issues, EA should be responding to public feedback within hours, posting updates to media outlets and email to customers, letting them know the exact nature and extent of the problems. Just like how if your power goes out, local energy utilities will text you with periodic updates about where the crews are, where the problem roughly is, and roughly when they expect your power to come back online. EA and every other charging station operator should be no different. The fact that their charging stations are isolated, not staffed, with no protection from weather, does not help. The entire design of them is flawed. Charging stations in areas with extreme temperatures (and really all areas) should be built appropriately, have some protection from weather, up to and including building them inside a mildly heated or fan-cooled enclosure, and feature everything a gas station has--bathrooms, food/drinks, one employee who knows the chargers and can do basic trouble-shooting/maintenance or know who to call, and also make sure things are reported. Right now, it's all a money-saving thing, and what we have are the cheapest possible solutions to complex problems. Just drop 4 chargers in a walmart parking lot and call it a day. "hope they work". It's not good enough. Why isn't EA working on a prototype indoor charging station in Colorado? Maybe you could find new ways to motivate them? :)

In my opinion, having a gasoline engine for when the electrons aren't flowing is the sensible path to follow.
Plus, with a PHEV you still get the max range of a normal car. Yes, I want the ability to go 500+ miles on a single fill-up should I choose to do so on a whim rather than be confined to just my local area.
If a BEV gave me 3,500 miles (coast to coast) range on a single charge, then I would be much happier.

I've been very disappointed with EA lately in California. I try an average of 3 charger units to find one that will work. Either the app shows In Use when not, dead screen but can charge, only credit card works not app, app won't start charge, etc, etc.

The car aren’t “fried”. The required safety systems in the cars isolates the high voltage batteries if it detects faulty currents, voltage or isolations. The manufacturer resets the safety system, unfortunately you need to visit the workshop for this. Sometimes the cars has had problems with the safety system when charging at our fast chargers. And sometimes the chargers have had problems with relays, internal cables or power units that caused the safety system in the car to close off the HV battery.

Maybe the fault isolation test that was failing was a new or updated test in these machines. And maybe the new test wasn’t qualified for cold conditions.

Well their problems aside, if you are talking about the guy who “hacked” into their (very poorly protected) terminal and took control of it, if EA wants to press charges, they have every right to do so. No matter how easy it was, and it was disturbingly easy, to do, what he did was a crime. I’ve worked in cyber security for couple decades and know better than to do what he did without permission from the system owner. Now is that the best move for EA to prosecute, no. They should thank him, find out exactly how the exploit works and patch it and maybe start an authorized bug bounty program to help stiffen up their product. I’ll just saying, they are not wrong to prosecute if they should so chose, as the guy was foolish enough to all put video out there about it (just like you blur your speedometer out when having a bit of spirited fun driving). Please continue tho to call EA out on their poor performance issues and hopefully change is coming for the better, or we are all doomed that rely on them for roadtripping or everyday charging.

Some day electric vehicles will be feasible. Early adopters will wonder how they ever supported a battery technology that requires child slave labor to mine the cobalt one solid state batteries are mainstream. The Ford F-150 electric is already having battery failures. I predict all these new low cost EVs coming on the market will end up producing massive buyer regret.
I see in some places the cost per 100 miles is higher for electric than gas.

How hard would it be for a charging company to add a little booth and an attendant. Mark that charging station as an equipment TEST station, at heavily discounted rates or even for free. Guaranteed the real customers will find the real problems, and the attendant/tech on site will be able to troubleshoot, run diagnostics, and get the freaking system up to production reliability 20x faster than any "in the lab" design testing could do it?
The goal is to get a great reputation firstest and capture the market forever after, right?
So the cost of having an attendant tech on sight, even for just two shifts a day, is chump change.

9:00 I have to disagree with you here, Kyle. Kilowatts was wrong for doing that, and they were definitely wrong for demonstrating how to do it publicly. If they found a security vulnerability, they needed to report it privately to EA. I have personally reported similar behavior to EA in the past that was being bragged about in private Tesla owner groups. Yes, for a lot of people, this might just be innocent fun, but there are also a lot of bad actors. The behaviors of some Tesla owners (purposely blocking public chargers, shutting public chargers down through the interface, posting false negative/fail reports on PlugShare, etc.) are also why a lot of people in the EV community refuse to buy Tesla vehicles moving forward, so some internal policing of that community could do Tesla some good too.
Either way, there has been a recent uptick in vandalism and what appears to be hacking/sabotage. At least two different make/model CCS EVs have been bricked at different EA chargers in the last month or so. That's never happened before in the 12+ years the public CCS networks have been operating. If EA is aware of intentional hacking/sabotage on their chargers that has resulted in catastrophic damages (and potentially life-threatening situations) and are pursuing legal remedies, they have probably been instructed by their attorneys to limit or cease all communications. The timing of this is also suspect, following so closely on the heels of Tesla's push to get their proprietary standard listed as a public standard (NACS), which would make them eligible for billions of dollars in public funding.
This is an issue that I personally take seriously, and I can't blame EA at all for being extremely upset as well. At least two EV owners have lost their vehicles, multiple chargers no longer work, and a segment of the EV community (i.e., Tesla owners) are reveling in it for some reason. It's not a good look.
