I feel u!! They are self taught for the most part....Neither one of them attended Berkley, GIT, New York School or Julliard for that matter.......I have knowing these cat for a long time. They are a little older than I, but I can remember growing up and watching them at Afro Days in The Park!! Leon is very proficient in theory. We jammed together once at a guitar center thing and I mean he hip me to a lot of theoretical aspects of music...
Daryl Darden is one of my childhood heros, we grew up together in STL and he's still one of the most incredible players as are the fine gentleman playing in this video WWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!
These cats are good friends as well and do everything that they can to help enhance each others talents and careers....... Jross aka lethbptl - Let Everything That Has Breath Praise The Lord!!!
Daryl Darden grew up right around the corner from here...He used to play Afro Days in the Park when he was a little boy....Greg Haynes which is his cousin he taught while living in the projects....Pruitt & Igoe........Lean Perry has played around here since he was little as well... Daryl used to hang out with Mitch from the group The Thirteenth Floor & Tower of Magic with Mark Carol on Bass......He left here and hooked up with acts such as Gladys Knight and cruise ship gigs.........Jross
Nice! 3 wonderful musicians just having fun, not trying to outplay each other. That kid in the room is probably going to be a guitarist one day. Lol. This would probably be one of his most memorable moments.
These guys are just fantastic. So relaxed but at the same time there are some great lines going on here. On of the best I've seen. I need to see more from these guys.
Hey lethbptl, I'm just wondering in regard to these guys learning curve. Are they Berkeley or GIT educated or are they self taught? Sure! not every jazz musician is professionally trained but to be deeply rooted in theory sure helps. I did notice on one vid I'm sure I seen Daryl reading just before taking a solo. just looking for some kind of roadmap for pointers. Jazz is definitely the most difficult style of music that I've ever tried to learn. I hope you're feeling me. Thanks Bra
What's up fellas all of you guys are still sounding good my favorite song by benson.... I miss playing with you guys... Hey Leon .. Darl.. and Greg Just want to say hi ... miss see you all one love always .. Dennis Brock (guitar)
I cant wait to one day be able to play anywhere close to this level. I want to learn more about the chord relationships and the incredible playing I just witnessed. great work! peace
lethbptl, this is some awesome stuff, I mean note of note and more. Man how do you get so much talent in one home gethering without any intimidation. This is and sound beautiful, true artistry at it's best. I really would like to meet these guys. St Louis has it going on.
You know, I'm surprised we haven't met. Maybe you are but a youth compared to me. I used to hang out with Daryl and BBs during the Monday night jam--and then we used to hang out on Friday nights after my guitar lesson. I'd go hear him at Westport. And then I'd be wherever he was playing. I also used to teach at Silver Strings. Do you remember that store?
At the first few (10) seconds i thought these people were just some guys who sold there soul to a certain someone...:P But after a while...I realized those sweet Jazzz licks are just TOO "HEAVENLY" SWEET! Cant imagine how much more you guys may have improved in the last 3 year :O No words...
Amazing. I play a little myself (nowhere close to the level of these gentlemen), and I know from my own experience how hard you have to work to make it look that easy. Although I know each of these players has been around for awhile, I only "discovered" them today, thanks to your video. Thanks for sharing -- I now have three new heroes!
PS. I remember growing up Daryl use to hit all the local bars. If he moved to Cali he still holds residence here seeing as though he still has a 314 area code. Greg is the band at Westside Missionary Baptist Church here in St.Louis and Leao is a preacher at his church not ten minutes from where we grew up.
No they don't. Daryl lives in LA. I'm asking if you all got together in St. Louis and played--and if so, I've got so many question about the place. I'll send you a video from Quartette Tres Bien at their height--this was a great great group.
This is why I play guitar...to hopefully get as good as you guys...great inspiration and great improvisation on a Benson classic!
Such staggering skills in one room, hangin'. What a joyful sound.
