    Seems a lot of capital to tie up for a £2k profit....and wouldn't a potential buyer be worried about PX or trade on in the future
    when there is considerable depreciation in the pipe line?

    Rule of thumb in car auctions is first price is best price put it through a second time will go for less. On that basis the arse is falling out the market.
    Cap clean is bottom book so if a car is selling on cap they isn’t prices rising

    Hi Jonathan,
    Thank you for all the content. I am on the verge of switching from ICE to EV and found your channel.
    I've binge-watched many of your videos and feel like I've found the best way to buy an EV :)
    I need help deciding what to buy and will soon be contacting eco-cars with my requirements.
    What I've set out for: Value for Money. Spend as little as possible to buy a Tesla close to or under CAP Clean prices, and still under warranty.
    Notes: Buy a car that is Grade 1 and still under Tesla Warranty (4 years/50K miles). Tesla offers an extended warranty for cars still covered under the new car warranty. So, I will buy a two-year warranty from them for peace of mind.
    Here are my options:
    Buy a Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2021 with less than 30k miles or under 50k miles for close to CAP Clean prices.
    Buy a Tesla Model 3 Long Range 2020 (70 plate, under 50k miles) for close to CAP Clean prices.
    Buy a Tesla Standard Range 70 plate (under 50k miles) for close to CAP Clean prices.
    Shanghai-built models are preferred, but I acknowledge that for Options 2 and 3, they are a rarity (70 Reg - Jan - Feb 2021).
    I live in the Midlands, doing mostly local runs (school runs, groceries, etc.) with occasional long trips during holidays (think traveling to Scotland).
    Could you please share your thoughts? Also if possible a note on what i can expect on each options. Have seen your video and got a rough idea.
    Appreciate all the knowledge being shared.
    Regards,
    Siva

    Hi Jonathan, do you see many MG 4's at auction? They seem very popular with lots about, but hardly any seem to get auctioned recently? I wonder if most people buy them rather than lease, due to the cheaper starting price?

  • @jonathantaylor1998
    @jonathantaylor1998 Месяц назад

    Hi Jonathan.
    Andyfox1680 makes a valid point - it's all well and good saying that EV prices are "on the up" because they're selling at auction for over CAP Clean, but, if that CAP Clean figure represents a HUGE depreciation hit anyway, then it's not exactly a shining example of positivity.
    For example, that Cupra Born 58kWh V2 sold for £22,600 on a '73 plate with under 5,000 miles.
    On Autotrader, that car can be bought for around £31,800 after discounts.
    So, the difference is a £9,200 (29%) depreciation hit - which, I think in anybody's eyes sounds like a lot for a 7-month old car...!
    But, if that compares equally with similar combustion-engined cars going through the same auction, then that's fine - so, as others have also mentioned before, maybe adding a few equivalent ICE car auction prices in your videos would be re-assuring to potential EV buyers that their money is 'as safe' as it would've been if spent on an ICE car.
    What do you think?

    • @cjmillsnun
      @cjmillsnun Месяц назад

      It is comparable with ICE. Every brand new car loses a lot just driving it off the forecourt.

    The PCP on my Leaf E+ is ends in October 2025. I will owe a whopping £16,972 on it. I am going to have to hand it back to the finance company and have nothing towards a new car. When I switched from my last Leaf PCP I had amazingly £7,000 equity in the old car!

    A pity no Kia eNiros there to get a gauge of the market, but still interesting to see what's happening. Planning on switching from a Kona Ultimate to a Niro with a heat pump so would be useful to see what a 4 or 4+ is going for. Sent my form back to Ecocars a week ago and not heard a peep yet, both of my sons bought through them (one was the Ioniq from Aston Barclay to Caithness) and experienced similar levels of customer servcie but persevered, I'm not sure I'll be so forgiving.

    • @JonathanPorterfield
      @JonathanPorterfield  Месяц назад +1

      As i said in the video, the 1st 9 cars were from Octopus electric vehicles ( leased) and they instructed Aston Barclay to sell at values Octopus want for each car.
      The next vendor ( seller) was zenith , and it looks like they too had set 'reserves' much lower than cap , overall most of these sold for over cap , hence my comments that values are rising on the hammer !

    • @Cupidstuntfc
      @Cupidstuntfc Месяц назад

      @@JonathanPorterfieldfair comment but still confused. The fact that the first seller of the 9 cars didn’t accept the bids doesn’t alter the fact that of those 9 cars only 5 got above CAP average and only 1 got above CAP clean and that was by only £200. 1 of them was 4k below CAP average. it’s obvious to me that unless you lease a car which is exactly the same as hiring it, the residual values mean there is no point in even considering an electric car. Anyway never mind good luck with spreading the gospel. Until you can charge an electric car in five minutes and there are many charging points as petrol stations it’s a no from me. I find it sad that as a society we are going backwards instead of forwards. my grandfather who died in 1979 could not only get to New York quicker than I can today despite the technical standards of the time, by flying on Concorde, he could also get in a petrol or diesel car from his home in London and drive to Edinburgh quicker than an electric car built over quarter of a century after he died. For the record I’m not a climate change denier but I can’t help feeling that electric cars are the betamax of the automobile industry.

      @Cupidstuntfc i often use the comparison with concorde verses todays flights , and how 'no one' complains it takes longer than 30 years ago to fly London / New York.
      You're the 1st !
      I personally dont think it's a bad thing that we all slow down a bit in life , and with video conferencing the need to fly huge distances to meet 'face to face' to do business is not needed.
      Same with driving vast distances in an ev , my limit is around 250 milesin a day , then i need to sleep 😴 ( and i pick hotels with a ev charger , or an outside 3 pin socket) when i awake ive a good 300 miles range in my kia e niro.
      EVs are not for everyone, but if drivers think differently they can change and see that driving an EV is no great inconvenience 😊

I cannot tell you how many times in a negative market I extolled the virtues of a buying a house. Maybe they are the future but the ridiculous mission statements of the car manufacturers that say they will stop producing petrol/diesel engines in the very near future is just madness. I’m sure at sometime in the future there will be electric vehicles that can be charged instantly and infrastructure that supports it but I reckon that could be as many as 30+ years away. ...and how do you think the fuel for your dirty combustion-engined cars is created?
      I find it laughable that the anti-EV trolls are quick to assert that electricity power generation for EVs means they're not that 'clean', yet they completely ignore the environmental carnage that drilling for, transporting, refining, distributing and dispensing petrol & diesel has inflicted on the planet and its populations for over a century...!
      Even now in 2024, every 6 weeks on average, there's an oil tanker spillage somewhere in our seas, releasing 10,000s of tonnes of oil in to the marine environment.
      And it's not just at sea - according to their 2023 annual report, Shell reported a pipeline oil leak every 41 hours on average, releasing 1000s tonnes of oil in to crop soils and waterways.
      So, do you STILL want to argue about which fuel is cleaner...? 🤦‍♂
