As a Canadian music promoter, I became personal friends with Johnny for the last ten years of his life. I got play both his white and sunburst Firebirds. Those occasions were the greatest guitar moments of my life! Even more so than playing a 59 Les Paul!
specifically the firebird iteration which are more like double p90s (bar magnets as opposed to pole piece magnets like fender style single coils or regular buckers or like les paul deluxe mini buckers)
@@Noseheros sure you got that the right way round? The magnets sit directly in the Firebird coils while mini humbuckers are magnetised by bar magnets beneath the polepieces like regular PAF style humbuckers and P90s.
@@rabbitspliff Correct. If you spend any time reading about Firebird or mini humbucker pickups, or pickups in general, in online forums or RUclips you will pull all of the hair out of your head. A majority of folks really don't understand that they are totally different, both in construction and sound. Modern specialty winders make variations of just about everything, but the basics of the original designs are lost on most people. One RUclipsr even referred to traditional Firebird pickups as mini humbuckers and said that many people get worked up about it so it's important to "know what you're talking about". Hmm, ok.
Love ya Andy. In deference to your job of demoing the products assigned to you, time after time you demonstrate a natural humility. The guitar community should honor you my man! You play like a contender (without the baggage)... and we ALL appreciate you.! Give it a thumbs up guys!
Andy is a killer player, and very thoughtful in how he showcases each product.... always thought so, but man, this video is something else... amazing. Makes me want, want, want these pickups.
Andy certainly your best demo, very inspired, thank you for your contribution to test in perfect condition new hardwares during all these years ! Cheers from France
OMG!! Andy, I dig all your demos but with this one you really hit it out of the park. You should give up you PGS gig and hit the road playing the blues! Love it-
I have never heard anybody get that close to Johnny's sound til now! OMG, if I close my eyes and listen to this video I could swear that it's Johnny Winter. Good job dude! I am planning on building a guitar soon and I think this is going to be my Pick-Ups. Hope they sound as good on a Strat Clone.
Sorry to answer so late. I don't think your strat copy is gonna sound the same. It probably has a 25.5" scale length and a tremolo bridge instead of hardtail fixed bridge. The guitar will be brighter, but I think it should sound good, just not similar to the Firebird sound.
Those pickups sound beautiful! Great playing too. This video gave me a good look at your right-hand finger picking for this style of electric lead playing. Very helpful. Thanks!
I truly regret never going to see Johnny play live. Been a big fan of his for years and years. I'm glad to see Mojotone release such a quality product in Johnny's name. And this may seem cliche or cheesy to some. But there's one song in particular that I think of almost every day that eases my troubles and simplifies this crazy world. The song is "Life is hard" on the "Let me in" album. In it, he sings "Life's hard, and then you die" True and honest words from one of the greats.
What a lovely sounding pup set. I upgraded my axe recently to mojotone classic 57 alnico 4 overwound. Couldnt be happier and the guitar sounds they way I imavined it to. The secrets in the mag mixture.
This is amazing, this guy can really play and he's just a demonstrator. Great job! Congratulations to whomever hired him. Most videos like this feature an absolute hack showing their product.
G-d Bless him, some of the greatest influenced Texas Slide tones ever from a Firebird player that was just as unique in tone as the styles of one talented Rock&Roller doing it on Highway'61!!! BTW Andy does an amazing tribute with impeccable preciseness that tone is pure WINTER!!
I see by the website that these fantastic pickups come in a neck, bridge and middle pickup. Sure would like the output of the middle. Wonderful playing and tone as usual.
Haha! That was well done. Do you think you might get Rick Derringer to handle the chords and backfills? One of Johnny's finest qualities is that he never needed anyone else to put it all out there.
I’ve had a 72 firebird V reissue for 40some years and can say with confidence those pickups are excellent reproductions of the originals. I just might buy a couple and put on a new firebird to play out with. Much as l love my old one, the big banjo tuners are getting worn and their size requires a much deeper case making it harder for an old timer like me to pack around. I think Firebirds are the best sounding guitars ever. What amp is that? It sounds first class too.
Like the other guys here said, your playing is exceptional. But the key thing is -- it's not cookie cutter like many YT demo guitar players seem to sound like. Some really good riffage in there. It makes for a great demo of these pickups, which, obviously in 2014 when this vid came out, Johnny was still with us. I'm still trying to learn stuff he played, and I don't think I'll ever be able to stop.... The pickups sound good 'n' gritty, too. Peace.
I had a friend build me a very nice firebird kit. Great for a kit and he did a great job but the pickups are weak. Thinking about upgrading to these. I had a 76 bird but had to sell. A long time ago.
Well, shit sorry for that mislead song title man. Hopefully you didn't actually search that song up xD But the song in the intro is highway 61, and the end is a live version of good morning little school girl. Great versions too probably one of the best out there. Johnny Winter was an amazing blues master.

Cherry Picker Guitars I’m envious my friend! 👍
That is very cool !
What cant this guy do? He seems to know every tune and is a master of all styles!
Agreed, the only other living jukebox that comes close imo is Phil-X. An Andy and Phil-X duo would be unstoppable!
Johnny would be proud!
RIP Johnny.
both minihumbucker pickups and the firebird are so underrated
specifically the firebird iteration which are more like double p90s (bar magnets as opposed to pole piece magnets like fender style single coils or regular buckers or like les paul deluxe mini buckers)
This statement x 100. I love p90s, mini humbuckers and firebird pickups.

Andy Winter! That's some of the best playing ever by Andy.
👍

Damn, you nailed Johnny's tone. Great job dude.
Ace, Andy, be proud, you've done a lovely tribute to Johnny.
Nice playing in the spirit of Johnny ...
Andy is a killer player, and very thoughtful in how he showcases each product.... always thought so, but man, this video is something else... amazing. Makes me want, want, want these pickups.
I have no idea how you master so many songs and styles. You sure did a good job on this one! I like the pickups, too.
Andy's playing is just awesome. Great pickups too!
I liked this demo so much I actually clipped the first 45 seconds and am using it as my ringtone. Well done.
Love it-
Saw Johnny twice, stood on stage in 87 and up front in 92 and that sounded dead on.
Glad I stayed in Friday night to catch this. When you let it rip, you let it rip!

Andy's an amazing player! And I love how he can play so great without a pick!
Andy, I’m a long time Johnny Winter fan. You sound incredibly like him. I just bought a set tonight. Great job Mojotone! Johnny lives!
High!!
Are you satisfied with your new pickups??
Is a Firebird??
I am impressed! Nice job geting the Johnny sound.
Those pickups sound beautiful! Great playing too. This video gave me a good look at your right-hand finger picking for this style of electric lead playing. Very helpful. Thanks!
Awesome playing.Johnny is smiling at you for sure. Mojotone has out done themselves with these pickups.

The first concert I ever attended. I got lucky, and didn't really appreciate it much then, but I do now.
InspiretoVictory Totally agree, the one track that really resonates with me too. 👌
What a lovely sounding pup set. I upgraded my axe recently to mojotone classic 57 alnico 4 overwound. Couldnt be happier and the guitar sounds they way I imavined it to. The secrets in the mag mixture.
Woah. This may be one of the best videos you've ever made! Fantastic playing!
YES! More Firebirds please!
i think johnny's really proud of this review andy.
good job! Johnny would be proud.....
Johnny be good!!!
Johnny would be proud!!!!!!!
This is amazing, this guy can really play and he's just a demonstrator. Great job! Congratulations to whomever hired him. Most videos like this feature an absolute hack showing their product.
Awesome guitar playing and tone!!
Faaantastic played with this great sounding Blues Beauty!
Was looking at new pickups for my Firebird; sold!
That is a tone I'd die for!
Andy simply the best i've heard since the late great JW not necessarily the pick ups but your playing keep it up
Dayum. Sold! That was a great demo. Fine chops and exquisite pickups!
Thanks so much, this video was treat to make!
WONDERFUL PLAYING GREAT VIDEO
Faaantastic played and a Beauty with a great sound!!!
Incredible playing, light my fire, awesome review of these pickups. Now I have to buy a pair . . . . .
Great playing and tone! Andy´s got it nailed
Great job Andy! You did your homework on Hwy 61!
I appreciate that! Johnny was a huge inspiration when I started playing.
Awesome video! Good Morning Little School Girl totally rocked! Thank you.
god, watching him play that without a pick is crazy!
I mean Johnny played with a thumb pick and his fingers so it’s pretty similar to him
the slide stuff especially sounded just like john dawson winter's tone!
I see by the website that these fantastic pickups come in a neck, bridge and middle pickup. Sure would like the output of the middle. Wonderful playing and tone as usual.
Man fantastic playing. AmAzing tone.
RIP. Was hoping to see both brothers in Rockland at the Lobster festival. Very cool product.
Great job as always
Sounds great, and well played ...!!!
Great jam Andy, and very fine
Guitar, high definition sound quality.
Nice work on Good Morning Little School Girl, Andy
Johnny Lives!
Nice pickups and playing there Andy
Thanks so much! I grew up listening to JW so I really wanted to make this demo special! ❤
damn!! that sounded great! i want a set.
Great video, guys!
Andy Portland misses you, hope you come back up once in while to play when this virus is long gone.
Great work.......ROCK ON
Andy great job on this one ...you did JW proud !!!
I know this is older, but you rock bud! You nailed his style so dead on
I really appreciate it! I grew up listening to Winter, so I'm happy to hear that!
Andy
Dude, you need you need to get out there and rock the stages! And bring those great pickups with you!
Andy is such a great guitarist and demo-er of gear
Groove with Matt RIP
Haha! That was well done. Do you think you might get Rick Derringer to handle the chords and backfills? One of Johnny's finest qualities is that he never needed anyone else to put it all out there.
A real good player and good sounding pickups. I don't think you could go wrong, if you don't like your present FB or LP PUs.
Nice playing dude!!!
Awesome Demo!!!!!
Great playing Andy. Almost thought it was Johnny at the start of the video.
I’ve had a 72 firebird V reissue for 40some years and can say with confidence those pickups are excellent reproductions of the originals. Man thats as close as anyone can get to Johnny's slide playing!Outstanding job!!
Andy a beast wow

Great demo/tribute. Probably one of the best I have seen from PGS or anywhere. What's the overdrive being used for the last section of the demo?
i like this guy's playing style
what song is that a 3:30?? u play it great!!!!!
Wow. . . You definitely do JW justice. Wow 🙏
So sweet
I don't think Johnny was using a Firebird just quite yet when he recorded Second Winter. Probably still using the Epiphone with mini humbuckers.
The Bird is the Word.
Damn i can't believe how these pickups sound so close to Winter's tone ..
Make sense for signature pickups though ..
Andy rocks!
Searched all over the Mojotone site-These pickups are no where to be found!
They are still there: look under the humbucker category, you can still order them with various options.
Andy wow, is there a style or artist you can’t duplicate?
SWEET
were the stock capacitors changed as well? If so what kind/ value ?
Do their Wide Range HBs next or Lollars
Awesome demo! What amp/settings/pedals were used for the demo?
Is there anything PGS Andy can't do? Pickups are incredible, but I'm watching the video over and over for Andy's playing
Bet if; Andy demo'd a cheap O clone set.. They would break new sales records!!
If I had money to throw around, these would be my pups upgrade.
I had a friend build me a very nice firebird kit. Great for a kit and he did a great job but the pickups are weak. Thinking about upgrading to these. I had a 76 bird but had to sell. A long time ago.
I think it is great that Andy knows about "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl:.
Had the "Johnny Winter And - Live" album growing up! Thanks,
Andy
So the real question is, where’s the backing track for the intro?
Fuck thats a good looking and good sounding guitar ! Good JW style playing there too
Standard tuning?
Are these blades under the pickup covers?
Does sound more like Johnny with those pickups.
So these are actually Firebird pickups or are they mini-humbuckers? ProGuitarShopDemos
Bradley Stroup firebird pups not the mini buckers
My Telecaster with a regular miniHumbucker (not Firebird) in the neck position is the best sounding guitar ever.... 😀🤩😎✌
Yeah, great tone and playing! Amp used here anyone?
Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue. 3:27
Derek Heidemann Ok, thanks Derek!
Most demo vids the playing is meh........ dude your techniques are on point.
Fuck yeah!
Please, the correct song's name...
Well, shit sorry for that mislead song title man. Hopefully you didn't actually search that song up xD But the song in the intro is highway 61, and the end is a live version of good morning little school girl. Great versions too probably one of the best out there. Johnny Winter was an amazing blues master.
Thank you, Tyler.
Hiway 61
Now that's what the Firebird should have sounded like from the git go
