Just got a steal on a used 501 and it's pretty epic. The feature set is extremely similar so I really appreciate you going through and broadening my knowledge of the product.
I work on high end commercials as a First AC and have had one of these as a daily driver for About two years now. To me this is 70% of a 703/TVLogic, having the build quality and a lot of the pro features. That said the lack of Lemo in and passthrough is a Big let down. Just make sure to watch for Color accuracy, as these tend to go wayyy off after 3-4 months and need to be re-calibrated. I’ve now gone over to a 703UB because I need those^ features and more brightness. The 702 OLED is really an overlooked monitor, just cheap enough to let you enter into the pro monitor world without having to spend €2500+
Yeah smallHD due to the camera we use supporting sdi out. I feel like it’s the little things that separates professional feature/TV gear and technology from people starting out. The ability to save profile presets and transfer it from one monitor to another is a must when working with lots of rental houses.
Thanks for your review Justin! I also switched from Atomos to SmallHD 702 (standard version) Since bmpcc4k I do not need an external recorder. What to speak against Atomos - build quality - Touchscreen (fingerprints) - Got hot like a toaster - Battery life - Personality of Atomos CEO ;)
Yep, I just switched. The EL zone system, multiple SDI in, to name a couple thing, are game changers. I talked to Atomos before I switched … EL is not in the near future.
That monitor is really good I live in Garden Grove so I know how the sun make my phone where I can't see anything and I can see your monitor better from this video then my phone in real life
I prefer my atomos over smallHD and I've worked with both. One the set of the first feature I worked on the DP running A cam had smallHD and I was using my shogun inferno on B cam. He hopped on to my cam for a few shots. After using the atomos and playing back the footage I shot and previewing it on the atomos, he liked it so much he said it's a good chance he's going to switch. I've seen pics of atomos on sets for big budget movies that's been in the theaters. But I do agree that I've seen smallHD on sets more. I believe it all comes down to preference. I didn't really care for smallHD because it was too contrasty and the menu system was complicated.
I bought the Smallhd OLED AC7 for £60 used . there are bargains to be had , even on eBay .. Older gimbals and Sachtler Tripods are also cheap as chips and worth looking out for .
the term you are looking for is that it cross converts from SDI to HDMI and vice versa. Sorry, don't let me interrupt you. Wow, that is a lot of good info. Cheers!
This video made me think, I already got Fotga DP500 for my BMPCC6K, is ot worth it to get Atomos for A7s III? I have Fuji X-T4 and plan on getting C300 Mk3, so it is really odd to think how atomos would integrate into my system. It seems to me that perhaps I don't need it if I am running mobile, 10bit is quite enough for a small camera setup. Is ProRes worth it in a small setup that can shoot 10bit? I would appreciate your opinion on that, thanks! P.S I ditched not only Zhiyun Crane 3S, but also Ronin S after your video. Apparently DJI focus on Apple devices and my Sony devices are not compatible, I went for a Glidecam :) Less features, more rigidity, no electricity.
@@JustinPhillip thanks! I like how you keep up the interactiveness! It means a lot to us viewers, I wish you best and infinite creativity! Thanks again!
Nice video Justin! What would you recommend for shooting skateboarding with my A6500, SmallRig cage, top handle (etc)? Bright enough for being out in daylight, but with latency low enough for shooting action stuff real close to an obstacle or person. So you know, I'm looking to get a monitor that does exactly that without breaking the bank. Cheers
I prefer the HDR Video Assist, the scopes are better, 2500nits, HDR, can record ProRes proxies from my P4K simultaneously...what else? The main things i miss from smallHD are the custom false color, screen grab/overlay, and being able to send custom screens/LUTs downstream.

I’m currently shooting with a Nikon d3100 , with all types of limitations, recording time limited 29min, 1080p, slow motion, etc...
