  • It's interesting how the message that's intended is not always the one that's heard. I'm truly looking forward to reading your thoughts. Here is the link to a copy of the AAC meeting agenda so you can see the wide variety of topics they covered. The use of social media (via zoom or like) should be a high priority for municipalities to implement. Due to Handy Lift not running past 6:30 pm, it is vital for the municipality to offer inclusion for individuals with physical limitations, that are not able to be there in person. The Handy Lift Bus is most likely, partially funded by the municipality and depending on where you live, may not be a cost effective method to run past 6:30 pm. When I lived in Barrie, ON after my car accident, they had Specialized Transit and it did run until 10 or 11 pm. I did have to complete a short medical form filled out by my medical practitioner or qualified person, in order to use transit. There are all kinds of rules and regulations that do not cross over into all levels of government (Federal, Provincial, or Municipal). As a person that is considered disabled, I do not feel that is discriminatory. It is my belief that the use of social media for inclusion needs to be a priority for the Municipality of Elliot Lake.

Great comment! I agree that we could offer much better access by using a platform like Zoom. There is a by-law that would require changing in order for that to happen, if city council agrees. Our Handy Lift operates on the same schedule as regular transit and so Thursday and Fridays services is until 9:30 and there is no Sunday service. Our city council meetings are every other Monday at 7 pm, so there is no transit available to attend, even our regular, accessible buses. Having specialized transit service is a good thing. I hope it served you well after your accident - how are you doing now? It did surprise me that each municipality decides it's own criteria for who qualifies as a user - and I like one idea I saw where the application asked to determine whether the user would require Unconditional, Conditional, or Temporary service - recognizing that the weather should be considered in an evaluation and also take into account people recovering from a broken leg or other temporary impairment. It allows the service to help more people when they need it. As Ontario transit moves towards implementing On Demand services for all users, I hope the information required to deliver those services will change as well. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, it really does help a lot. How are those hot peppers doing?

@@LeonaM-MyABCs It's been 9 years since the accident and I have relocated to NB. Count yourself fortunate to live in a much more inclusive province for people with physical limitations. Here, they don't even have building codes that mandate the electronic doors on the main entrance or even in restrooms, etc, etc. As for my injuries, they will affect me for a lifetime, but I have made significant progress in some areas. I had my own struggles with an unseen disability of scent sensitivity, especially in a confined space like Specialized Transit. Despite there being a policy in place for personnel not to wear scented products, they still did. This at times brought on anxiety, asthma attacks, massive headaches and caused me to feel sick to my stomach to the point of vomiting. I could really go off on a rabbit trail here of how, not only the transit company and drivers, but also the municipality chose to cover up and branded me a troublemaker, etc. It actually caused me a great deal of harm...........on demand service is a good thing that should help people when they need it the most........some of my pepper plants have begun to set fruit. I will be thinning them out today or tomorrow to allow more spacing 🙂

@@AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu I have heard a few stories of the lack of accessibility and inclusion laws/codes in NB. It doesn't sound like a fun time - a lot of promises without any follow through. It's mind boggling to consider that we have an Accessible Canada Act that pretty much says we'll handle the federal stuff but the provinces and territories will deal with their own individual stuff. So a federal building will have a whack of bells and whistles but not so much - maybe - one in Nunavut or New Brunswick and everybody can just go along at their own pace and fix stuff and enforce it or - maybe - not. Barrier free Canada by 2040?

It's sad to be attacked for stating your opinion. We should all be respectful especially on social media.❤

Agreed. I don't expect that everyone would agree with everything - I'm one of those that talks back to the TV - but we should be able to discuss issues both spiritedly and with respect.
