I really disagree with you the 320d is an amazing car. The auto is fab and it keeps the revs nice and low so it's not too loud ! And generally the car is quiet.
I have a 320d F31, and i love it. The 8 speed auto box is a dream. Like most diesel cars, they rattle a bit on start up, but once you get going there is no problem. The run flat tyres are on the hard side. I've had mine 3 years, and hasn't cost me a penny, only MOT's and stainless steel trim around air vents, speakers and switch gear that look much smarter than the black plastic.I would not have bought one with that naff looking blue trim inside. May change the car this year, almost the same,Estoril blue, auto box 330d, perhaps on 18" rims
If you thought the previous 15 cars were such dog shite, why the feck did you keep buying them? Says a lot about you that does. Also comparing a 320d to an E class Merc is like comparing a 5series to C180d.... Stick to shilling used Porsches!
Get the automatic and - if you can - the six pot. I've owned 6 BMW's and the F31 LCI is my absolute favorite (except for the electric power steering, which every car now has unfortunately...)
Driver 81 you would have been better off getting an old Peugeot 405 mi 16, almost bullet proof bottom ends, lovely daily driver, none of that jerking on those!, nice comfortable seating, and not too much of "electronics to go wrong" and "easy to maintain", to be honest, I am loathing these new cars (I worked in premium brand garages) for years, and I would rather have an older Audi, or Peugeot any day of the week over ANY of these "NEW FANDANGO BAGS OF POOP" That do nothing but make you poor for having owned them!!, crikey an old triumph herald has more character, just an old mechanics shillings worth lol. BUY AN AUSTIN ALLEGRO........ JOKE!!!!!
Just had a thought!, get a vanden plas Austin allegro Estate!! sensible option for the hard up!! due to there's naff all to go wrong! lol, well you never know the radio might pack up pmsl, you gotta have a bubble bath haven't ya!!.
You should have went for any of the 6 cylinder diesel engines, so much better sounding and more refined than a clattery four banger and, so much more power!
I have the f30 320D efficient dynamics business my wife has the f31 320d sport and we don't have any problems mine has done 46k and hers has 33k no problems at all best car I've had reliable good mpg I drive is the best (pro nav) on mine just had mine mot (63 plate) not one problem love them, my next car will be the 335d m sport as I test drove one and it was even better
100% agree. I swapped from my 210ps 2.0T petrol scirocco to a 64plate 120d M sport. Rattly, unrefined, crud suspension. Really disappointed. Had it 5 months and looking to flog it.
Its your driving style mate :) You to realize F30 clutch start immediately in a first 1 cm from floor. You are letting the pedal too far up thinking its a bite point. Its not. They have initial bite-point and then settling region that is also used for down-shifts. For smooth down-shifts with manual BMW you have to press, release about 1/2 then return 1 cm back down and slowly release. It will be smooth as butter. You just simply cannot drive well. AND ! the noise stuff might be something broken in your car. Mine is completely quiet and well insulated even on highway i hear just a wind. Engine I can hear in city and its more quiet than petrol golf 4. So probably your dual mass is shot or silent-blocks or something. This is a rant.
ive got a 2015 f31 328d with the luxury package and its an automatic. It shifts like a dog too. Very clunky at low speeds/Traffic scenarios. Its as if the car is just itching to get into the next gear. as soon as it does, youre on the brakes again and it has to downshift. Quite annoying. With a diesel Engine i would have expected it to hold gears and use the engines torque rather than constantly searching for gears.
I have bmw f31 lci 320d 190 ps and manual also. My car is the B47 not the old n47. Is very quiet car , only when i start the car you can see is a diesel. About the gear is your driving stille !! My car is ver smouth even is a manual with 400nm!!!
Do have 320d and 330d, the 320d i have the 2019 as i like the "older" look more than the new design in front. And my favo car for daily things, 330d with a tune is more fun maybe for most but would take my 320d any day of the week over my 330d if i just could keep one. And for sure not sounds like a tank, but you really should have pick the 8s auto as it´s just brilliant. :) Had many cars over the years and 320d is just brilliant allround car. :)
In our house we have a 2012 W212 e250 sport estate and a 2014 F32 m sport 430d x drive and I spend pretty much half my time between the two. The bmw is without a doubt the better car in almost every respect, the mercedes is a frustrating car with these being my biggest peeves with it: The electric steering, the sluggish auto box which changes gear exactly when you don't want it to, the heated seats which turn themselves down, the interior materials which are inferior to my ford transit, the suspension which bottoms out if you leave it parked on a hill and won't let you drive away for several minutes because of "vehicle rising" and finally the senseless dash display controls. I'm not a mercedes hater, I think it's a beautiful car to look at but we used to have a W211 elegance and that car was totally superior. If you're used an F30 bmw then a W212 is going to be really disappointing.
I made a video on a BMW jerking when changing gears and suggested it was the CDV as you mention, and I got slated for it. Who knows, i did read that the F range dont have the CDV installed so shouldnt even be an issue. Who knows...
How can you be certain that the CDV is the problem? I'm certain that the rev-hang and the ration between the gears are the cause, for me at least. If I engage the second gear as soon as possible the change is smooth. If I rev up, I'll have to wait for the revs to drop, else it's jerking. Isn't CDV used for protecting the clutch?
I've removed the CDV in two of my BMW's (320d touring and 130i) and it fixed all my gripes with the gearshifts. The CDV slows down the engage and disengage of the clutch.
I’m in the process of selling my F20 M Sport (Estoril Blue) 118i (1.6 turbo) and mines going for the same reasons - only 13k miles - looks amazing - but just a big disappointment - the main being the engine noise and gearbox .... going to Audi or Merc when it sells
I think it is your driving style gear 1-2 is a bit more sensitive and different from the rest of the gears, I’ve noticed it in my e30. Maybe bmw made it that way? Probs just have to pay more attention to shifting from first to second then you would 3, 4 and 5
Idiots buying disel cars with m sport suspension and 20inch rims. And telling tath sound like a tank and is not confortable. Buy a citroen then you will be ok.
neven blaskovic I can't think of anything I'd rather not buy than a Citroën! The only comfortable Citroën is the C6 with that daft suspension which if was to go wrong, in the factory next to the guys who built it....even they wouldn't be able to fix it! Why would anyone be so dull to go out and spend their hard earned £s on a bloody Citroën!
to be fair , the manuals are horrible , especially mated to 2.0d . 3.0D with 8 speed auto seems to do the trick. I had e92 petrol manual , and hated the gearbox too. It had that delay during the change etc. something to do with cluth. RIP E92. However, I am back in the market for BMW , but this time I will do it right.
6MT in the F31 clunks because of the Clutch Delay Valve to stop you wrecking the drivetrain , just need to learn a different driving style ;) However I do wish I got the 8 speed auto! Well that and a 335d haha
Get a Toyota or something. You'll complain no matter what. I had a 1979 320i bought new. I wouldn't trade my 20 year old F-150 for it. It runs great and pays me back hauling furniture and freight. I'm 6'6" and love the seating position.
My E90 auto is smooth (apart from a rough idle now and again). It seems like all BMW automatics are way superior to the manual, hence why BMW will make all their cars Automatics in the coming years.
I have the same problem when changing gears in my e91 320d. The main problem is rev-hang, and it is especially noticeable when changing from first to second (and also from 2nd to 3rd). The revs don't drop quickly enough resultning in too high revs when engaging the clutch. I did some modifications to smoothen it out, but the main problem is still there.
Free stuff on the website as normal take a look fellow 81'ers www.diagnostic-world.com/pages/diagnostic_tool_competition_217788.cfm
It’s a four pot diesel. All four pot diesels are noisy. And it’s a manual. The 8 speed automatic is sublime. There’s no reason not to get it.
Yes I agree.
But the BMW diesels are really very noisy.
The most of other 4 cylinder diesels from other brands are much better in Terms of noise.
I really disagree with you the 320d is an amazing car. The auto is fab and it keeps the revs nice and low so it's not too loud ! And generally the car is quiet.
You should have got the 320d with its brilliant 8 speed ZF gearbox....super smooth gear changes!
Should have bought the 8 speed auto?

It's a bloody diesel! All dieses cars sound like farming tractor, you wouldn't have those problems with a 320i (which I own)
I have a Kia Sportage diesel, and my dad has an X1 diesel. they are both much quieter than this 320d. it does sound like a tractor but not all do.
A BMW like that is best sampled as a 3 litre diesel auto, all your concerns are then sorted.

The Car is nice.
But overall there is no premium feel in the cabin.
The sound Isolation is not good and the materials feels cheap.
that tank sound makes it sounds like a real machine though.

You can drive any car smooth if you modify your driving style - why did you buy it if its that bad?
Clutch Delay Valve. Remove it and all will be fine.
I made a video on a BMW jerking when changing gears and suggested it was the CDV as you mention, and I got slated for it. Who knows, i did read that the F range dont have the CDV installed so shouldnt even be an issue. Who knows...

Doesn't the latest (LCI) of the G30s have a newer diesel? 2016 to 2018?
Idiots buying disel cars with m sport suspension and 20inch rims. And telling tath sound like a tank and is not confortable. Buy a citroen then you will be ok.

Just get an 8 speed auto, get some better options, the cheapest iDrive is crap and get the M sport model, then it’ll be fine
to be fair , the manuals are horrible , especially mated to 2.0d . 3.0D with 8 speed auto seems to do the trick. I had e92 petrol manual , and hated the gearbox too. I've just text drove one 320d auto absolutely brill
it's not bmws fault if you can't change gear :D
Why dont you get the f30 f31 335i msport? Massive difference, test drive and you will see
Just have bought the perfect automat...

What is that camera looking thing behind the rear view mirror??
Actually very local to me? As its whickham front street at the start.
Complaining that a diesel sounds like a tank, is like saying you hate when your woman moans after you given her the best she’s ever had.
Can you tell me what the CAR DVR you are using XD
