    PORT PHILLIP GEOGRAPHY/GEOLOGY
Port Phillip Bay is a horsehead-shaped enclosed bay on the central coast of southern Victoria, Australia. The bay opens into the Bass Strait via a short, narrow channel known as The Rip and is surrounded by Victoria's two largest cities -Melbourne and Geelong. Most of the bay is navigable, although extremely shallow for its size.
    Surface area 1,930 km2
    Average depth 8 m
    Max. depth 33 m
    Water volume 25 km3
    Shore length ~264 km
Port Phillip formed between the end of the last Ice Age 9950 BP and ~7950 BP when sea levels rise drowned the vast river plains, wetlands and lakes at what was then the lower reaches of the Yarra River. The ancient Yarra flowed through what is now the middle of the bay, formed a coastal lake in the southern reaches of the bay, which was dammed by the Heads. It subsequently poured out into the prehistoric Bassian Plain, which was later completely flooded and became Bass Strait (Holdgate et. al. 2001; Parks Victoria 2023; Wikipedia 2005).
