WHO DOESN'T LOVE THIS SONG ITS A CLASSIC
I hear the song more on RUclips now than I did on the radio then. Watching them live here on the video enhances the experience too. Good song by Ram jam, and very good reaction by Millie.
i hope the new Generations accept, the old Guard was real and so funny and great.
"Black Betty" was Ram Jam's only big hit in 1977. But it is one of the most fun & energetic songs. Just some dudes hanging out in someone's back yard & jamming out. Love it! "Black Betty" is a 20th-century African-American work song often credited to Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter as the author, though the earliest recordings are not by him.
While some may think “Black Betty” refers to a woman, others claim it’s a nickname for any number of objects, including a bottle of whiskey, a whip, an 18th century musket or even a penitentiary transfer wagon.
The literature I've read on this is that it's 3 references, one in each verse. 1st refers to black powder rifles, which blinded the shooter many times. 2nd refers to black hashish, and the 3rd verse refers to a local "lady"
The long version with the guitar solo is even better!
The guy in the black who is just dancing around is the band’s lead singer. Incredibly, their One Hit and the lead singer is singing backup!
It's a really old song, a very early blues from Lead belly circa 1939 that was covered by Ram Jam in the 1970's. They made the film (they didn't have video's back then) in their backyard for next to nothing. The radio version had a longer instrumental. Verse 1 is about an old flintlock musket called Black Betty, Verse 2 and 3 is about a lady obviously but a great rendition.
Now this is my kind of backyard picnic. LOL This is their big one hit wonder, but they did have some regional success, even so, this is a classic that needs to be recognized as such. When this first came out on the radio people were like "WHAT!!!" and couldn't wait to be played again to really listen to it. Because it was so short it was difficult to catch it all at first. It was when they recognized that intro, they knew what to listen for. BTW: Love to see you get so into it, Millie.
The guitar player was in the Lemon Pipers earlier with "Green Tambourine". Its funny to watch them back-to-back. Black Betty lyrics are over 200 uears old.
I knew you would really get into this one! One of my favorite songs. Rock on Millie!
There is an extended version (on record at least) where the solo gets totally berserk! Find it when you have a moment ;-)
Yep. The studio version is much better. This is the radio cut that keeps getting reviewed because of the video. It's still great, but the ace where the solo is cut just makes me cringe.
Yes....this was way too short....long version rules!
70’s greatest song
This was on the radio everyday as a kid.....so...that means I'm old.....Peace!
Dating myself here now, but we DID used to dance to rock instruments! Great song, & great reaction, thank you!
Back in the day, this was your classic "head banging" song.
The s has always been one of my all time favorite songs and I love your reactions Millie.
LITERALLY my childhood in the 70’s jamming with bands like this in our front yard!! So fun!!! 🥰🎶
My party song the guitaring is Phanomenol ❤😂😂 still kicking it in 2023.
No fuckin Party without this song for the last 45 Years !!!!
Oh, I have _sooooooo_ been waiting for this one... 😁
Hahaha glad to hear 😄
@@MillieMochiTunes please tell me where that wonderful accent is from???
Here we go! Bam ba lam!
And they recorded under the Epic record label!
Can't believe this band only lasted one year.
What are you talking about? They put out 3 albums from 77' 78' and 95 and they have a few other really good songs like "Right on the money" and "Hurricane ride".
@@LewDanLascivious8276 Never heard any of their other tracks, but will try to find them now. I meant they were only around for a year in 77-78. They of course did resurface later, but not with the original line-up. Don't think they were ever that popular in the UK. Just found a Best of album, so going to listen later on. 🎧
Turnpike
The kid next door
Gone wild
Pretty poison
This band is more than just Black betty.
Best reaction I've seen in a long time Grats
Others have probably already pointed this out, but this was a work song that chain gang prisoners (about 99 percent of whom were black) would sing while breaking rocks, digging ditches, etc., in the early 20th Century southern United States. Ram Jam just did a rock 'n roll remix of it. It is fucking awesome, though!
There is a longer version of this song Millie,it's great!
The original was written and performed by Leadbelly. Jim
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 Another great reaction to a great song.
You got good taste Ms. Millie. You really know good music. Thank you so very much for playing some Mamacita. I really did enjoy it very, very much. Have a Blessed Evening. Adios.
You’re so cute! ❤ Okay, about the song. The original was in the age of black powder muskets. The black musician
Leadbelly did a version in the 1930s. There was a for-real chain gang version too. This one is simply about a white guy and black woman in a relationship. It was banned from some radio stations for being racist. Not so. Their affair was nobody’s business but their own.😊
so catchy!

The incredible fate of a girl found with a broken collarbone at a bus stop and ended up in an orphanage.
One of the most famous hits of the king of rock 'n' roll in an unrivaled gorgeous, phenomenal performance by Diana Ankudinova ( 18 y.o.)
Can’t Help Falling in Love (Elvis Presley / DARK VERSION cover)
VERY IMORTANT, the video must be original (duration - 8.56m) from Diana's channel, NOT a short pirated copy from "brocoli".

Great reaction Millie!
The drummer looks like Frankie Banali from old Quiet Riot!
Patreon peeps need to have her discover Ten Years After, "I'd Love to Change the World"
One of my top 5 dance songs along with New Orleans is Sinking. Play this song at a party and record people dancing. I tell you once you start dancing to this song it is hard, but very fun to take all the way. Important is to pace yourself. Like Carmen.
Short but a lot of fun.
Great old tune
This is from the mid `70's but the singer used to be in the band, The Lemon Pipers and I think one of the others was in The Ohio Express or The 1910 Fruitgum Co..
Here's a couple more of that ilk you'd like. "Cottage Cheese" and "Slow Down" by Crow. Both are from `69 or `70.
A Black Betty was an 18th century musket and VERY inaccurate. IT was eventually replaced by the Brown Bess, which was more accurate.
This is a radio edit. The album version is over 5 minutes long.
Loved your reaction!
This song is really old! By really old I mean ... it's from the 19th century! It was first recorded many years later, because of the lack of technology. The oldest recording of this song is dated back to the year 1933! So the first recording of this song is 90 years old! It's a real classic! :)
I was going to mention Lead Belly, but someone else has too. Check him out, i was surprised. "Gallis Pole" Led Zeppelin did a version of. The best version is, i think on The Jimmy Page Robert Plant album "No Quarter" They call it Gollows Pole" "Black Betty" You just listened to. "House Of The Rising Sun" The Animals. "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" They sing that song at rugby matches in the UK. "Midnight Special" Creedence Clearwater Revival. "Pick A Bale Of Cotton" was in the Steve Martin film "The Jerk" "Rock Island Line" is a good one also. The 60's bands where influenced by not just Rock and Roll but the blues and country people too. What the 60's bands did was change the songs to make it there own. They made great versions. I think lead Belly is classed as Blues/Bluegrass.
THIS TUNE IS A WALLOP & A BANG 😎
The orig artist is : Leadbelly 🎸👌
There were a lot of quarters spent on this song back when it was on jukeboxes. I know I played it a lot and so did my friends. It got some radio play but not that much. It was more of a song that was played at parties or while you were riding around partying. Get some cheap wine or a quart of beer, fire up a big fat doobie and put on some RamJam.
EVERYBODY LOVES BLACK BETTY!
Pure Fun!
How dare RUclips copyright "Black Betty" this song is tradition that each RUclipsr must experience sorry about your strike. They should take it back!
Just shows her channel is getting popular.
Thank you, means a lot 😊💜
Ram Jam made a lot more more $$ off the ad revenue than what thier stingy record label ever paid 'em (Why they quit after one LP)..I've heard it in at least 4 car commercials and 3 car-chase movies. I retired from playing live about 8 years ago, but some of the most fun shows my band splayed were at backyard parties like this video! Fun watching ya bop around !!
there is a version with a longer solo in the middle, when they really speed up.
Seek out the original uncut version. Tragic they couldn't afford to put the smokin' middle section in here.
It is also from 1977 like Barracuda from Heart, which i just heard your reaction of it. Black Betty is as far as i know a one hit wonder, but a one hit wonder that everybody knows. It is simply greatly composed, excuted and how it is sung.
Ram Jam formed in 1977. They split in 1978.
This is 4 on the floor stomp rock beat. The kick drum rules this tune. You can see why rappers and other samplers always go back to the 70s to steal a good line.
That's a shame 😮
Google Rock&Roll.....this song should turn up. The '60s and '70s ROCK!!
appropriate reaction young Millie. Same as mine 47 years ago or so. It was my graduation favorite song
Nobody has had this vid blocked
Gorgeous Millie, Daje tutta
What do they always react to the music video it's like 3 minutes shorter than the original studio song and the studio song has a kick butt guitar solo I don't get it
For any fans of the show Heart Of Dixie. The bar is named The rammer Jammer lol. Fuckinf legendary!
They have a few other really good songs like "Right on the money" and "Hurricane ride".
Kick start my heart by Motley Crue!
The origions of this song lead to the great delat blues man Leadbelly. Though there is some thought he took insperation or took parts of old "slave" songs and melded them into this sone. He lived from 1888 till 1949.
❤❤❤
Best $200 music video ever!
Classic
I'm at the lower end of 50 so I've heard this around 12,326 times.. Great song, but norm I'd change the station around 2:24 ..
This sounds to me like a combination of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Beastie Boys and a shit load of Red Bull energy drinks. I like it ......I like it a lot.
One take, everyone's drunk on Strohl's in the lead singer's back yard, total production cost, $30
There is a very convoluted history to this song because despite many people claim it came from the civil war in the US from the description of a musket rifle, which is false. The origin does however go back to the chain gang era around the turn of the last century as a song black inmates sang which there are early recordings of, which you can hear in this article I'm posting below. But the history of this song takes a few turns. This chain gang song was stolen by a black singer who recorded his version of it in the 1933, then it was stolen again by a more well known artist called Lead-belly 1949, who once again created his own version of it. Then as the decades passed it was picked up by this band you're listening to now but the lead singer added an additional verse to it and created his own current beat of it and it started to take off on the charts. All pervious versions never amounted to much.
Then the NAACP along with the ADL told the lead singer he had to give all of the proceeds of his song to the Lead-belly estate because they claimed he owned the legal rights to that song despite Lead-belly stole it from a previous singer. They said no. Then the ADL along with the NAACP contacted major radio stations in New York and California and told them to stop playing this song, which they did. There was a court case and the judge sided with the Lead-belly estate and gave all the proceeds to that estate and the lead singer of this band never recovered from that loss and he has never been seen since and as far as we know, no one knows his whereabouts to this day. That band created their own version of this chain-gang song, added another verse to it and lost all that revenue to a former singer who stole it from an earlier singer. Truth is far stranger than fiction. bshistorian.wordpress.com/2016/04/30/whoa-oh-who-was-black-betty/ www.reddit.com/r/blues/comments/ls6e87/1933_texas_chain_gang_black_betty/
I feel like the record label gave them money to make a video and instead they got a keg, threw a party, and bought an ounce of weed.
According to legend the video clip costed anywhere between 50 and 200 dollar of which at least half went to weed.
This song is actually two hundred years old of course this is the rock version of it. An its not about what you may think it is.
Leadbelly also was the orig of alot CCR tunes - Led Zep Galos Pole - Midnight Special and much more
Are you ready for ; Radar love by Golden earring ?!
Aww man I missed a live stream..
Don't worry, I stream on twitch on most evenings of the week 😊
@@MillieMochiTunes Thanks beautiful....will try to catch you not on twitch though.
The only people that dont absolutely love this song are the ppl that have never heard it.
Thanks for the memories! This song is not THAT old; I was in my thirties the first time I heard it on the radio.
When YOU heard it 👍😎 - it's been around, in one form or another, for well over a hundred years.
❤
I heard they said it cost them 20 bucks to do this video .
🎼🎵🎶🥁🎸🤟🇬🇧❤️
Music is composed of three parts. Lyric, Rhythm and Melody. The challenge of Rap is that is missing one third of that formula. No melody. Try what I call the 'Whistle test' next time you listen to rap. After the 'song;' is over - try and whistle the melody. Generally, it is impossible. Rap is essentially poetry set to Rhythm. Great lyric and solid Rhythm. But Rap has to work ten times as hard at Black Betty to reach greatness, because the melody is missing or NOT memorable. Thus Rap ''songs' will never be remembered by future generations. They will never be played in a supermarket or elevator as musak. Never come around again to enter the public's consciousness. Black Betty has Melody. It will forever drill into your brain along the pathways of neurons into the music storage part of your mind. Welcome to the world of melody.
Epic Classic Rock song!! too bad someone pinched the shit outta this one. Shame on em! Check out the full version when you get a chance.
Fun reaction anyway thanks for your energy and smiles!! You Rock!!
Do Bloodrock DOA about 1970 1971
sadlt this is the only song ram jam did that made their name
Most of the video production budget was spent on beer and weed.
NOT the 60's, was released in 1977. What is rock intrusments.????
This video cuts out the guitar lead
There is a version of this by Spider Bait
This used to be normal..lol
70s love not 60s!
They got more good tunes although most people only know this one........'Turnpike' and 'The kid next door' come to mind immediately.
i like Spiderbait - Black Betty better
You Look different on the Thumbnail. Why? You dont have to be embaressed
I think you are jewish, am I wrong?
