Never knew this. I had no polish or mirror but I had a wet stone small bick with a super smooth side. What could be better than a shaping stone I thought. It worked great .
if you use this method to help sharpen your cutter blades make sure that you keep them matched up with the guards that they came with. If you just jumble them up like what happened in the video you will find that it will take a few weeks to get a good shave because they are specially machined to fit each other.
Also works very well if you have a sheet of ordinary copy paper on a flat surface. Apply a little Flitz (or Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish) to the paper, then using the same method with a finger moving the blade assembly around for about 1 minute for each blade...
Hi, I found your video very enlightening. I have thought about the possiblity of sharpening my Norelco shavers cutting blades for years. I realized that I didn’t have any small mirrors ir even a piece of glass. I was in the process of working on and sharpening some of my pocket knive and had a though. I accomplished the sharpening by using my Arkansas sharpeniung stone. Just added some honing oil and it did the trick. Honing stones are exceptionally flat. It shaves much better now and I didn’t have to spend a dime. Thank you for the inspiration!
Hah, I was just like that too. Replacement heads are expensive, what kind of world do we live in when buying a good sharpening stone costs the same as buying 2 sets of shaver blades?
Thank you for the video-instructions. I was going to re-sharpen the blade but after I removed the blade from the housing, it turned out there's a lof of hair trapped in there. After removing it I can use it again. because the blade still feels sharp. I have remove the razor blade housing from the head before but did not try remove the the blade itself from the housing.
it will help and I will do it for the fun of it but be aware that the blades are 2 part blades and the other half is the nest ribs in which they sit. The whiskers go through and get sheared between the 2 blades. So sharpening the one sharpens like one single blade of a pair of scissors.
Ah I see... so should one buy these nest ribs and blades from Philips? Do they sell it or must one buy from aftermarket? Also, I've seen some putting diamond paste in between blades and head. Would that sharpen both then?
Very good video but it is advised by Norelco to keep the SAME blades and screens together for the BEST results and not mix them up like what it appears in your video. (I have this shaver in your video.)
Thanks for show how to sharp the blades of my shaver , very helpful, “ now my question is , we’re can I buy the material (polish) to sharpen my blades) thanks for answer my question, also what is the specific name of thsty polish…………thanks again………….🙏
I watched another video that said to use diamond paste, what do you think about that or do you reccomend a specific polish. Replacement blades are crazy expensive, it's like printer ink only worse, to just throw away a razor and buy new because of the cost is crazy. Thanks, Mike
I am confident this process works as described but the question I am left with is how often can you do this before the blades are worn down too much and just need to be replaced? At some point they must be worn down but it is after 5, 10, 100 sharpenings? Another question is do you rotate the baldes with or against the cutting angle in the sharpening paste. It is hard to describe the direction I am talking about but the blades rotate in one direction to shave. Would you rotate them in the paste in this same direction or the opposite? I would think the opposite because if you were sharpening a knife that is the direction you would do it as well.
Theoretically you could do it for many times, but you're only sharpening the rotating blades. You still need the shields of the razor that they sit within to be in good condition. So this limits the number of times you would probably want to use this technique. I have tried it twice and extended the life of my blades by about two years before just buying new. On the Norelco type shavers I have, the heads rotate anti clockwise. I used car polish, any type of thin cutting polish would do. For sharpening I have tried clockwise, anti clockwise, figure 8 orbits and even random. It didn't really matter too much they still came out noticeably sharper. Start with clockwise and see what results you get.
I'll try it. It would be good if it works because the replacement blades are very expensive. Add a little more and you can buy a new shaver. Not that I like replacing shavers. They cannot be recycled.
@TestChannelOne the polish is very, very fine abrasive paste. It's like when you're polishing metal from rusted or extremely dull you start with lower (rougher) and move to higher (finer) number grit abrasive sheets.
For 5$ to 8$ you can buy new blades at Walmart and forgo all the hassle of finding the expensive polish ( 5 to 8 $) ruining the mirror- and making a mess. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Also blades need to go back where they were removed. Video was good though and I like.
Yeah , you don't know what you are talking about. a new set of rotary blades is almost the same price as a whole new electric razor. Next time post the link of these $5 blades, oh wait, there is no such thing.
$35 is a bargain price for genuine blades on the slightly higher end models. So even if you only use this method twice before finally ditching the blades you'll be saving $$$$. Makes plenty of sense. Also you need to learn a little bit about the Mohs scale, which measures scratch resistance. Glass and ceramics are harder materials than common metals. Definitely more so than your average steel razor blades. So polishing on a surface like this can't (and won't) mark it.
Never knew this.

I’m wondering if brasso would work, I’ve got some of that from when I was in military

I don't understand how the metal polish sharpens the blades.
