DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

How good were Dusclops and Dusknoir actually?
Dusknoir is underappreciated. Makes me sad
They're really bad, but I still love myself a Dusknoir sometimes
They're outclassed by almost any ghost type in the game. Even Eviolite Dusclops sucks because of Knock Off
Their low HP coupled with lack of reliable recovery outside of Pain Split really holds them back. Also, Knock Off is everywhere and absolutely destroys Dusclops.
I really like them, shame they're outclassed by almost everything.
Dusclops and Dusknoir unfortunately have to compete against Cofagrigus for the "Best Suicide Trick Room Setter" title, as it's fun to use Trick Room + Destiny Bond.

I think you missed some part about Mence in Gen 4 and 5 in Uber. Yes, it is mostly considered an inferior Rayquaza, but people actually put them both in the same team. Since Mence power level isn't much different from Ray, it is as if a "loophole" of species clause, and one can potentially soften the counter of the other. Team support is needed to patch up the same weakness of both, but it can work with the right support.

What about doing special smaller videos about the Little Cup meta once a month? (or less!)
I'm a super big fan of the channel and I love all of these meta analysis', but I think it could be super fun to learn about a huge meta game that very few know about. We all know Garchomp, Dragonite, and Salamence were good. However, did you know Chinchou is a top meta threat in Little Cup? Or Timburr, or Shellder? I think it would be fun and actually very surprising to learn about the babies! Keep up the good work and I look forward to next week's video :)

Side things like little cup are so fun. It's a damn shame the games STILL done have stuff like a tournament creator or the ability to properly host multi battles. Sword and shield had so much potential but its online is just so bad
I had no clue chinchou was so good in LC, I love chinchou and lanturn! Shame lanturn isn't very good.
And despite the yanma line being bad, in LC yanma is really good (I think)!
@@microwave8931 I heard that yanma was once outclassed by ledian in competitive

Gen 7 Salamence: Arguably the worst it has ever been Competitively. It’s too strong for UU, but very mediocre in OU. Outclassed by Gyarados and it’s Mega as a Dragon Dancer in OU. It can use Flynium Z, but that’s it.
Mega Salamence in still great in Ubers.
Gen 8 Salamence: Mega Salamence is gone, but Salamence is strictly a UU mon. It does rather well in UU and has new tricks like Hurricane and finally has a good Physical Flying STAB to use in Dual Wingbeat. Salamence can go Physical or Special whenever it wants. Salamence is one of the many Pokes who love the Heavy Duty Boots, letting it avoid Stealth Rock. A Defensive Defogger set popped up with Roost.

There’s been some news recently about how Salamance’s ancestor, Roaring Moon, might become banned along with the likes of Ursaluna’s new blood moon form in one of the competitive tiers. So perhaps in an updated video of Salamance’s competitive career can see how Salamance did and his paradox ancestor performed in the competitive scene.
Salamence just went 3 for 3!
Was it Ubers before DLC 2 dropped? It’s OU as of now but I can’t remember if it was banned before new DLC
Salamence might just be my favorite Pokémon due to its awesome design and awesome evolution story
Gen 7, normal Salamence remains in BL because Fyinium Z Fly is too much for UU to handle with the snowballing with Moxie, and the steel/fairy dominated metagame in OU renders it invalid and useless. Megamence, however, still is solidly in Ubers at A+, the second best Mega in the tier after Mega Gengar, even WITH the Aerialate nerf. That should say something as to how brokenly good Megamence is, coming behind only the best of the best like Dusk Mane Necrozma, Yveltal, Marshadow, and Xerneas.
Well done! This could be realistically part of his gen 7 vids.
True. Xerneas especially countered it if salamence didn't already have momentum.
Megamence would be the strongest DDer in the ubers tier if it wasn't for Megaquaza not needing an item to megaevolve in gen 6

Personally, one of my favorite builds is a bulkier wish-passer and defogger. Nobody sees support 'mence coming, you'll get free defogs and wishes off when people switch to their sweep-stopper instead of something to set up on it, then when they realize it's a support set, a lot of people forget that even uninvested, Salamence hits really hard.

Interesting. But, yeah I'm afraid it would be an only once time surprise.

How good were misdreavus and mismagius actually?
Finally Sun and Moon...
Mega Salamence was never allowed in Sun and Moon OU, returning straight to Ubers. Where it was, once again, amazing. If anything it was a even better than before. While Aerilate now only gave a 20% boost to Normal moves, its typing let it check Pokemon like Ho-Oh, Marshadow and physical Primal Groudon. Dusk Mane Necrozma’s popularity meant Earthquake was no longer required, as Prism Armor meant it wouldn’t KO after a boost anyway. In that slot it could run Substitute to use weak walls like defensive Zygarde-Complete and Ho-Oh as set up fodder, or Facade to take advantage of burns. It could also run an offensive Defog set, which freed the user up to run a different set on their Arceus. Mega Salamence was arguably the best mega in the tier - while it didn’t have mega Gengar’s trapping potential it was much bulkier and had much better defensive utility, thus making it easier to fit onto teams.
Regular Salamence wasn’t so lucky. It quickly fell out of OU, but the arrival of Z moves made it way too strong for UU. A +1 Supersonic Skystrike would tear through even Hippowdon after a Dragon Dance, and if it got a Moxie boost it was game over. And it could still run its old Mixed set, so not even Quagsire was a safe check. It was banned to UUBL, but it couldn’t do much in OU with all the new Fairy types running around, so it was left in forgotten and unloved in the Underused banlist.
In VGC 2017 it saw pretty much no usage. As an Intimidator it was outclassed by Arcanine while Garchomp gave you a better Dragon type. Things improved once it got its mega back in 2018 though. It could now abuse its base 120 Speed right away with the new mechanics, it packed Intimidate pre mega and it could run physical, special or mixed sets, giving it a lot of versatility. At worlds in the Masters division it came 4th at the hands of Japan’s Yusei Matsuno and amazingly 1st at the hands of Ecuador’s Paul Ruiz. He ran a mono attacking set of Dragon Dane, Double-Edge, Roost and Protect, making for a threatening bulky sweeper. It didn’t see any top 8 appearances in the seniors division, though it did clock up a 5th place in juniors at the hands of Japan’s Yuri Yahashi. But in VGC 2019, the restricted Pokemon came down and no one was using Mega Salamence when they could use Mega Rayquaza. Even the small niche it had in 2016, where it could outrun and OHKO Mega Rayquaza was stolen by Ultra Necrozma, who didn’t even take up the mega slot.
*ouch...*
Really surprised Dragonite wasn't mentioned once among all the comparisons to other Dragon types... I feel like it and Salamance had a rivalry for a while, with one pulling ahead of the other, only to be outdone the next Generation.
Between these two, I've been in Camp Dragonite ever since it got Multiscale.
Screw Dragonite, Salamence is the man.
@@xyro3633 My nigga
I'm more of a salamence guy, didn't dig the fat goofy looking dragon
Dragonite as it stands is the 2nd best pseudo legendary solely because of its ridiculous versatility.
Anything that is a weakness to Dragonite can be countered by something in its ridiculously large move pool.
If Dragonite ran ice beam flame thrower and thunder nothing was stopping it making you have to get creative beyond taking advantage of typing to beat Dragonite.
How Good was Primeape Actually?
Decent PU sweeper/revenge killer.
