      using animation stuff like blender for 3d printing will lead to a lot of issues trying to print stuff that programs like onshape and auto cad wouldn't have, like the floating vertices and especially non manifold parts which is when a part doesn't have a fully enclosed interior and thus the slicer can't tell what the limits of the inside and outside so it just breaks.
      printers always print faster horizontally than vertically so if a part can be broken up to lay flat it will be both stronger and faster to print.
      costum supports will be a lot cleaner and better supportive but u have to manually add them.
      parts can be heated with water or hair dryers to allow you to bend them so u can print stuff entirely flat then bend them to the desired shape to avoid supports entirely.
      always make sure your supports infill is significantly less than the models infill, i usually use 0-3% with single wall thickness on supports.

    As someone who did a lot of 3D modeling in animation school, I'm very excited to see you start 3D modeling and printing!
    My biggest piece of advice is primer/filler! Rust-oleum makes a great 2 in 1 primer that fills in all the layer lines to help give it a smooth, finished texture. I usually go through 2 rounds of priming then sanding with various grits and then hitting it with a clear coat to really give it that professional prop feel! (It can also help really blend in seams between multiple print pieces on larger props) Really makes a difference when 3D printing!

    Fun fact: the hand guard between the blade and grip on a rapier is sometimes called a 'basket'! I think because of its bowl-like shape and the fancy weaving designs it can have.

    tip: to erase the print lines on bigger pieces like this, you can use filler primer which is usually used on cars, it'll fill up those cracks :)

    As a fellow D&D nerd and lover of printing and painting mini's I think 3D printing is the best thing that has ever happened to table top gaming.
    Did some larger models, specifically I printed a model castle because I thought that would be neat. One large enough for characters/combat to actually to take place.
    Larger/Multi part models take a bit of practice and trail and error but you can make some really smart mechanism to just click parts together. I made the castle for our next game buuuut I had to take it with me. So I made it in 13 parts with little nubbins that would lock into place.
    Now the only thing I need is a printer that make me snacks and I'd be set for life! Which, with some of the advances in the 3D printing might/will very likely happen in our life time.
    Which is insane. in like 10~20 years you can just press play and print a burger with fries.
    Thank you for your awesome video's, it's so nice to know someone exists that has the same dragon energy but also the chaotic chipmunk energy I have ^^;

    Super impressive that you picked all that up so fast!! Blender has a steep learning curve and you just kicked it to the curb! I wonder if to get your shapes projected onto your objects if you couldn’t just do a lot of subdivisions on the target object and then use the shrink wrap modifier to project your shape onto it and then cut it out.

    Not sure if someone has told you yet; however, when you get to the print stage orientation of your print and planning based on orientation can make finish work easier. In particular I’m thinking of your hilt shaft. If you had oriented the print vertically the hollow for your dowel could have printed without support. Depending on length you may have had to chop it up a little more; yet, another benefit is that round cross sections would have kept you from getting long layer lines. Very impressed by your modeling skills - you definitely went from zero to hero with the blender.

    A really good tip for printing next time is to split your print into smaller pieces and then into identical half pieces. That way you have much lower short prints that you can iterate on quickly! Then you can just super glue the final pieces together and reprint failed small pieces quickly as needed

    great video! and also a tip for slicing since i work with 3d printing sometimes too. if you cut a model in the middle so that you have two plane surfaces to print on (for example the handle of your sword will really increase the print qualitity and needs less support material = less cleanup. maybe that helps idk but thanks for your video really inspired to get back into blender once more 😅

    A few useful tips for starting out!:
    PLA can be formed after printing using a hair dryer. Good for weird angles
    Some slicing softwhere has variable layer hight which helps for speed and detail
    Tree supports, the name differs per program, are very useful for organic models
    Some filiments can be vapor smoothed! Be careful for which though since some that can let off some nasty fumes.
    Some slicers have the ability to split an item into parts with pegs to attach for easy assembly.
    Things will sometimes fail and that's sometimes on the printer! It's part of the journey that can be planned for.
    Welcome to printing!

  • @savejeff15
    @savejeff15 7 месяцев назад

    Very good results for you first 3D print with self designed parts.
    I would recommend orienting the parts differently. Especially long ones upright look better in the end but will take longer. Also look into tree support if the anker slicer supports them. They are less of a risk/pain to remove on fragile parts

  • @clangauss4155
    @clangauss4155 7 месяцев назад

    Looks great! A skill to consider from here is how to optimize the models for print time/quality in the slicer after they have been designed. For example, note that the handle is a cylinder that tapers towards the pommel. Either in Blender or in the slicer, you can angle the bottom of the pommel down in the Z axis towards the build plate and the top of the pommel up in the Z axis slightly away from the build plate. If you follow the angle of the taper this will reduce the amount of support material needed, cutting down on both waste and print time!
