  • The internet was buzzing when Jeff Hardy mentioned he could have been bigger than John Cena if he stayed on the right path back in the mid-2000s.
But what does Matt Hardy think about that?
He gives his thoughts in this clip from The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, available every Friday at ExtremeHardy.com or wherever you get your podcasts!

In the hood, Jeff has always been way bigger than Cena.

@ - I’m from The Bronx NY grew up in one of the rougher sections of the city and I can definitely confirm Jeff always had support from the hood. Rappers always mention him in songs too. Dude is a generational talent.

Jeff didn’t have to say much to get over had a natural aura, a cool move set and wasn’t afraid to take risks. Look at guys like the undertaker he barely cut promos and the man is a legend.

The thing is a lot of my older friends that stopped watching wrestling around 2012 say that Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio is one of their favourite wrestlers and none say Cena so I think Jeff is bigger in certain ways but Cena has legacy.

Cena destroyed his legacy a long time ago when he became the CCP's lapdog.

He already was on the way to do that cause he was outselling Cena in merchandise. Plus, Jeff was himself, he wasn't a "character" in the wrestling biz hence why he always went by his actual government name. But to play devil's advocate, Jeff not being 100% there in the wrestling business is also heartening in a way to his character in itself. On the Twist of Fate DVD and even his My Life My Rules DVD, we saw how many other passions Jeff has besides wrestling like his artwork, music, motorcross and etc and how his main thing back then was being artistic and enigmatic. Jeff was a real person which was easy for fans in my opinion to gravitate towards him easy. So yeah, if Jeff was 100% focused on being at the top of his craft back then he most definitely would've passed John Cena as the face.

Im a fan of both Jeff and Matt, they were on my wall growing up but Im with Matt, he couldn't have been. Mic skilled wise he wasnt arriculate enough and not on Cena's level. But yes if he was sober, Jeff and Rey had the highest merchandise sales back then on smackdown but if he was sober and on the right path he very well could've put in the work and been as big and successful as Cena and locker room leader like Cena for sure absolutely. I'm ambivalent on this. Great questions asked. Always good to see Matt❤

That Jeff Hardy second WWE run made me a fan, especially during 2008-09, the WWE title chase was amazing, the Edge feud, the CM Punk feud both were awesome, he main evented almost all of the ppv's during that year, while Cena was getting more and more hated, and it's know that the only reason why WWE didn't went all in with Jeff was because of his demons, and time proved them right, sadly 😞

Kids love John. Adults love Hardy especially during 07-09. Jeff I believe was bigger but he wasn’t consistent whereas Cena Fans were kids and now as adults still love/hate him.

I definitely think he could have because the question in itself even changes the reality of the situation. If Jeff was in a good place at the time, who's to say he wouldn't have been like 'Man, this is really going somewhere...' and done a few acting/improv classes... A great example of that is Edge, during his return his promos and even his selling had this extra believability due to his acting having improved during his retirement.
Definitely an interesting thought to imagine though, Jeff always had the It Factor, arguably even more than Cena as Jeff had people buying into him while never really speaking, in a tag team and on a roster which included The Rock, Austin, Jericho, Taker etc...

In 09 it was a legit conversation between Cena & Hardy but Jeff didn't see it through. He got burnt out. I think the way vince was pushing him I think vince would've found a way to make it work. He was too marketable with the different facepaint every week. Similar to Mysterio mask. The early 2010s look very different if Jeff Hardy's stays

  • @Bengal3scape

Anyone being honest will have to admit that Jeff would have been the face of the company if he did not choose drugs. Guys like Cena, HHH, Roman Reigns etc are all great performers but Jeff had a unique authentic connection with the fans that is so genuine and cannot be replicated, it was more than just a work or more than just wrestling, he is just the best

I don't think he would have been the number 1 guy, but when Batista left in 2010, that number 2 babyface spot was wide open (even though he turned months prior). I mean, they had to turn Orton babyface because of it, for Christ's sake.

I think just because he couldn’t cut a promo how they wanted him to doesn’t mean he couldn’t cut a promo the way HE wanted to. To be a good actor, you have to believe the character when playing the role. They didn’t have his character verbalized in a manner that suited what he was portraying.
When he was the “anti christ” in TNA, he did just fine.
You also have to remember, Jeff was a big fan of sting and ultimate warrior, which both of them weren’t big promo guys. Warrior had the exception of sounding at least interesting but lacked any sense at all. I think Jeff’s “character” would be the same. Similar to raven. More abstract poetry than cena, rock, Austin

It's a shame, there's been so many guys who got overlooked in wwe that when somebody get's the ball the way Jeff did and fumbles it makes it a little difficult to feel sympathy imo. Jeff's not wrong but you could say the same thing about probably half a dozen other guys from the late 2000's early-2010's.

No! Jeff was one of a kind and will be remembered for his greatness. Matt was book-smart and an honor student, while Jeff was more into arts and creative pursuits. Both boys didn’t aspire to become pro wrestlers-they did it as a way to escape the tobacco fields.

@thomasshanks6735 i think pro wrestling is just a means to an end with Jeff. He likes his music, his art and to be with his family and friends, the wwe machine with the top guy comes with extra duties that would take that away
