    I use the Z6 on the daily. I shoot real estate as my bread and butter, so EVERYTHING I shoot is on that camera, day and night. 6 - 7 shoots a day, 6 days a week. That thing is a beast and after switching from Canon, I absolutely LOVE Nikon. Great vid, buddy!

      I've had a Z6 for 8 months now, (I love it) looking at a second body either a Z6 II or Z7 II.
      I've also added a couple of primes to my collection.
      Except for my D5500, and a couple of F lenses, All my DSLRs and lenses are gone.
      With the Z cameras is like I started photography all over again.

    Glad you like your camera. You're probably too young to remember that Samsung used to make cameras and one of them was the NX1. This camera shot 4K uncropped video with no binning and no nothing. It shot the most detailed videos of any other digital camera system back them...as it still does now. This camera was released in September 2014. This camera is the only one I still use in 2021.

    90% of time, you can get the job don, they have the same things, only small changes. It's not they a different from each.
    I invest more in good lenses, because they always get more inspensive over the jears. I have both Z6 as a allround, and the Z7 for special puporse background wit alot of details, landscapes.

    James, I completely understand your change. I used to have two Nikon bodies and a Lumix GH4 for travel. I got completely confused with the button locations and eventually settled with going Lumix only. I haven’t looked back! I did look at going Z6/Z7 when they first came out and I wanted to go mirrorless, but the tried and tested Lumix avenue looked the better option to me. I’m sure you will not regret your decision, especially if you are going to do event work, where you must have a backup option.

Never had a failure in any of the Nikons I got subsequently (FE, F301, F801, F4s , D200, D700, D7100 and D750) .Nikon lenses are just superb and fully reliable. I bought a new Z6 in September 2020 (the price dropped prior to the Z6 11 being announced. Don't worry about being unfashionable, you will have the last laugh with Nikon quality and reliability.

    I went to college with Nikon FG film days. Was really slow to move to DSLR’s, and bought the older bodies that no one wanted. Only now thinking of moving up from my D300’s and D5200 to current DSLR or Z6II. For video I have been on video camera bodies since the late 80’s. Today it’s mostly the BMPCC4K with 0.71x booster but really miss a super 35 sensor with MFT mount (JVC LS300 great design, but 8 bit only, even live output). So mostly using BMPCC4K with BRAW. Looking at maybe the MEtabones 0.58x with say some of my retro design lenses (Lensbaby Twist 60, Velvet) or future purchase (Lomography Degaurotype Achromatic etc). So My head is less about perfection though full frame corner to corner exploring 200 year old lens designs. So really thinking of the newest Nikon Z6II or cheaper Z6. Probably the Z6II since I believe it can do BRAW and Prores RAWwhile the Z6 can only do prores RAW. I like being format agnostic. (I have FCPX as well as Resolve Studio). BM doesn’t make a system yet that is full frame or even adaptable to full frame... Z cam makes some.. MFT mount with super 35 sensor as well as full frame sensors.. But I really like being able to head out with 1 camera and get both stills and video on the fly if I want. As far as the flips screen? Actually I like the idea of the format it is.. having had the articulated ones... having it side out off camera axis makes it more delicate and easy to hit and damage and feels weird.. so actually I prefer the format the Z series has. For video I have used external monitors for 20-30 years.. so I’m used to it.. I have the Atomos ninja V which would mount up great to the Nikon Z6/Z6II. Then honestly get the cheaper Atomos Shinobi for the BM series cameras since I don’t record externally with those systems.. CFII or USb3.1 drives. Anyway thank you for posting.. if you have any thoughts on my direction let me know.. I’ll check out your other videos.. and subscribing :)

    Nice to see a video where somebody isn’t trading in a 6 month old camera that they loved a week ago because something marginally better came out. I have the Z6. It is a better photography autofocus system away from being a perfect camera and even that has improved with firmware updates.

    I agree 100% with you. I did nearly the same in Nov2020. I sold my A6500 and bought a Z6 for 1100 Euro. Ok, it was a presentation model with 2000 shots, but it came with 2 years of warranty. I love the Z6. So far I have only 2 things to complain: the back dial goes to strong and the button on the mode dial is useless, I hate it. The dial move so strong, for what an extra button to safe? Its not a bigger problem for me, since I shoot 95% in M mode.
    I wish you all time good light

    Interesting thoughts. Z6 vs Z7: From the point of view of low-light photography/astrophotography the larger pixel size (Z6) is a distinct and significant advantage as each pixel collects more light, which boosts the all important signal to noise ratio.

    • @MH3GL
      @MH3GL 3 года назад

      What lens do you use for shooting that? I'm just getting into this and looking to purchase a Z6 (1st REAL camera). The 24-70 that comes with it is nice, but I'm thinking I will need something better to handle dawn/dusk/night shots.

    • @nigelorr7938
      @nigelorr7938 3 года назад

      @@MH3GL It depends what you wish to photograph. If Milky Way panoramas etc, where relative short focal lengths are needed, you might look at James Brew's video about this on this channel (April 2021). Specialised astrophotographers nearly always use fixed focal length/prime lenses and in this class the Sigma ART lenses (typically as fast as f1.4) have in general a very good reputation. It is quite possible that the new Z mount Nikkors will also be very good, but they are relatively new, so not a lot of tests etc on them. You might also like to follow some of Alyn Wallace's videos on his RUclips channel to get some very good guidance on techniques etc for this type of photography.

      Did some more digging, and it looks like the Nikkor 24mm-f/1.8s is probably going to be the way to go for me. I just can't figure out if the Z or F mount (FTZ adapted) version is the better way to go.
      If you have any thoughts on either of them, would love to hear them!!

    • @nigelorr7938
      @nigelorr7938 3 года назад

      @@MH3GL Can't really say - I gather that in principle the Z design lenses should be much better than the "older" F-mount lenses. I do not have it as I don't really go for widefield astro, but the Sigma ART 24mm f1.4 seems to be very good (and available second hand) but will need the FTZ adaptor.

    • @MH3GL
      @MH3GL 3 года назад

      @@nigelorr7938 gotcha.
      Will definitely check the Sigma out. 👌
      With regard to the Z mount being "better" because it's "newer", I rarely find those things go together in today's world. Older is usually built to a much better standard of quality.
      But we'll see! Sounds like this is all part of the joy of getting into the photography world 😁😬

    Well said James. But do not forget though please, video (unless someone is paying you for it) is not your mission. Your photography is why I'm here. Your rationale is exactly why I didn't sell my D750 when I bought my D850 and as regards your z6 over the Z6ii, it's exactly why when the D780 came out priced as it is, it was at the point that if I was to spend that much, I might as well bite the bullet and get a second D850, which I haven't done either. As I'm a vintage lens shooter it dovetails with staying with DSLRs. Nice kit and I look forward to your next work.

So far I couldn't be happier. I absolutely loved my Z6 but just couldn't justify holding on to it. If you don't need some of the improvements in the Z6/Z7 II bodies then it makes perfect sense to get a Z6 in 2021. I mean the only potential downside is that it may not get the same types of updates that the Z II bodies will, and it's firmware update lifecycle is shorter (by about 3 years, as I suspect Nikon will stop updating the firmware or at least adding any new features in about 2 years, as it seems that 5 years is about Nikon's lifecycle for its cameras in general). But yes it does make sense to get the Z6 if you don't need the second card slot, grip, USB power or the additional AF features, and personally if that was the case, you can save $600 and put that towards a lens. From an IQ standpoint, they are VERY similar (they do use the same processor and sensor however I believe Nikon did some refinements to the Z6 II's algorithms especially in the area of noise reduction at high ISOs, although this is more seen on the Z7 II than the Z6 II compared to their generation 1 counterparts; I believe this was because high ISO noise was a bigger problem on the Z7 and they improved it). So basically if you're not shooting sports or wildlife or need 4k60p, the Z6 is fine for everything else,

    I have a Panasonic G6 with articulating screen and a Z6. The only time I use the G6 is for a classic VLOG. The flip screen is superior in two major ways: (1) when attached to a gimbal, the flip screen is easy to use without unbalancing the rig, not true for an articulating screen, and (2) you can use it as a waist-level viewfinder a la Hasselblad, which I prefer. You can always view the VLOG on a Z6 by using Snapbridge on your phone.

    • @JamesBrewphoto
      @JamesBrewphoto  4 года назад

      As you say for classic vlogging out in the field which I do - snapbridge and phone is pretty much useless. I don't have the time to mess around which stuff like that when light and conditions are changing rapidly. If Nikon can develop a hybrid flip and articulating offering in the future - that will keep everyone happy.

    great points, also a couple others to ponder, the FLASH / batteries, grip, and lenses are interchangable between both cameras, so no need to get flustered because you picked up the other makers accessory!!, also the flash can be fired by the CL-S OR the radio triggers from both cameras; the other is that the IBIS and the "electronic VR" are TWO DIFFERENT BEASTS, the ibis moves the lens & sensor around, ie the whole sensor shifts around the body cavity, with "electronic VR" the image is cropped as the pixel shift method is used for the stabilization process!! that is to say pixels are alternately turned on/off, so some colour/exposure data is lost, as it is not captured, so some grain, and other issues are to be expected!!

I can reassure you that the Z6 is a little bit better for astrophotography, when you downscale any images taken with the Z7 down to 24Mpxs. If you use a tracker though and lower ISOs, then the Z7 is simply unbeatable.

I am starting to find out it’s limitations however, especially on AF. Good to get another perspective rather than Canon.

    I use my camera constantly at work. I shoot mostly still images in low light and overall photos, sometimes in macro. Currently, I use a D3500 because it is what I could afford at the time and I really needed a camera. I'm looking heavily into upgrading and will be using the camera for work and it will take a lot of rides on my motorcycle with me as I travel for personal use. I'm looking at a Z6 for about $1770 with the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F/4. That's a lot of of money for my though. I shoot only in manual and most of my video comes from GoPro, but I would like to dabble with the video capabilities. I guess the question is, is it worth upgrading? I also started checking ebay like you suggested.

      I've been doing these videos for 3 Years. SnapBridge & mobile phone is utterly useless for shooting these style of videos the majority of the time. It's cumbersome, time consuming and just not practical for the conditions I shoot in. Light and weather are often rapidly changing. I need to frame up my B-roll shots in literally seconds before moving on to the next. I also often need my phone for other functions during the shoot. Not to mention that Snapbridge isn't all that reliable or enjoyable to use IMO. I can assure you very few RUclips landscape photographers will use mobile phone screen solutions out in the field for these exact reasons. There is a reason they all use articulating screens and almost all camera manufactures are moving towards them - it's just the best and easiest solution overall.

And now with Photoshop's Super Resolution function - the z6 is going be awesome for landscape as well (provided you have a sharp lens). Canon M50 to Nikon Z6 is exactly the switch I'm contemplating, so this video is very timely for me (yes, I know it's been a year and a half since you released it, but I'm just finding it now). I'm waiting for some 3rd party lenses because for now I only have few lenses on ftz... Anyway, wireless shooting with Z is horrible. Application on smartphone not gives me right control and it's slow, so I bought a cheap wireless adapter. It's bad, that Z6 doesn't have built-in speedlight. How many money they saved? 10 dollars? Some people just want to enjoy their camera and not carry next few kilos of another stuff. The thing I like the most is how this camera fits in hands. It's really stable and built with good quality materials.

    I nearly bought another A73 and asked the store manager if a z6 would be comparable. He said you’ll save $800 and the z6 is just light years better. I was blown away. I was a Sony guy for a bit and I can’t stop praising my z6 with my 85mm. ALSO, and this is something I think many people don’t know or tend to over look but is key, Nikon Z f1.8 lenses are just as good as G master lenses at less than half the price. I got a 35, 50 and 85 for under 1900. G master 85mm is nearly that price. Lastly and this can not be overstated, the Nikon 50mm vs the Sony 50mm… well anyone who knows about the Sony 50mm knows it’s an embarrassment to photography. In contrast the Nikon 50mm ($479) is one of the best 50mm and is just under the sigma art 135mm as my favorite lens I’ve ever owned.
    Have you picked up the RAW firmware for the z6? I’m still so tempted. Lastly there’s a SmallRig half cage for the z6 that is a game changer to me.

    I get what you’re saying about the tilt screen for vlogging, but for the vast majority of us Z6 users, the tilt screen is a lot more convenient to use than a fully articulating screen. Most of us don’t need the ability to see the screen from the front, and having to have the LCD sticking out to the side when shooting high and low is very awkward to say the least.

    • @JamesBrewphoto
      @JamesBrewphoto  4 года назад

      Even if I didn’t do video at all, I’d prefer articulation in the screen. Low angle portrait landscape photography with a tilt screen is absolutely awful. Nikon appear to be the only major manufacturer that hasn’t yet moved away from tilting only. Fuji, Sony and Canon are now incorporating it into new releases. The market is moving away from them for good reason, they are dated and restricting IMO. Surely a tilting screen on an articulating arm would keep everyone happy - best of both worlds 👍

The 24-70 f4 would work at 35mm in the office, weights not an issue, but the 24mm small light lens would be nice as I would use the 24-70mm for stills in the field and the 24mm would do the video.

  • @WiseGuy.2013
    @WiseGuy.2013 3 года назад

    So. Long story short (not really). I own a DLSR and am in the market for new camera. Been using 7d with Magic Lantern. My main focus is on the best video my budget (which isnt really big, otherwise id get A7s3) can buy on a full frame sensor. In below 2k eur budget Z6 even tho it isnt the latest camera it seems like the best choice! On top of what you said, while doing my "research", i found out that (not all but) some of the Nikkor S's DO NOT FOCUS BREATHE almost at all (24, 35, 50 for example, 85 is bad at focus breathing but i guess its what youd expect from higher length lens - viltrox seems like a good half the price substitute). So thats another feature that screams "im all in" on the Z mount if youre serious about video.
    Saying that when i sell my canon APSC gear im getting Z6 mk1 and Ninja V. N-Log doesnt line skip (but it does x1.1 crop). I guess prores RAW is best shot in DX mode which could still be okish when looking for highest quality possible, its still sort of super 35, cinematically speaking (Prores RAW line skips when in FX mode).
    It seems to me like the best video camera up to 2k eur and even above especially when plugged into an external recorder. If you think otherwise please do comment. Im curious on why not, maybe ive missed something. After all... its sunday (almost as good as friday), and I had nothing else to do :)))
