  • Made an 18" chessboard with 2 1/4" squares. The chessboard is made out of walnut and maple with padauk accents. Flattening was done on my ‪@SienciLabs‬ Longmill CNC.

What a beautiful board. It's a real chess player's board - no distractions, simple (and you oriented it correctly, “light is right”). I wouldn't feel too bad about the engraving not standing out, I think it’s better than something in light letters “screaming” during a game. For a display board you can go crazy, but if your intention is to have this board actually used you hit the sweet spot.

Impressive build! Came out great. I’ve been using tung oil lately and like it but hadn’t considered adjusting the ratios like you did. Do you feel that worked well?

Yes, thinning at the beginning allowed it to soak in faster. You could really tell by the last coat that the wood had enough.

Sweet Chessboard! Ive seen a lot of cnc'rs use epoxy inlays and use the flattening bit to bring it to level before sanding.Anyways, great gift idea I'm sure it will be loved for years. What laser are you using?

Thanks, I just started working with epoxy and will definitely use it next time. I was hesitant to use it since I had very little experience. I bought an add on laser to the CNC, a little 7W one. I will probably want an upgrade soon 😬
