Which pedal would you feed this amp with?
I'd set the amp to where it starts to break up, Marshall clean so to say, set up an EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold in front of it, turn the knob till it pushes the Plexi really hard and starts to sound brutal and broken, dial the volume on the guitar back to 6 or 7 to get rid of too much low compressed tone, and Bob's your Uncle. That's what I like to do with my 1987X.
My MXR 5150 because it's so "expensive sounding"''. ;-)
A tubescreamer into a Klon or clone Klon into a plexi is essentially a Friedman HBE tone.
Let's go with DOD Overdrive Preamp 250.
I'd feed the amp to my fractal (for lunch). Just kidding (or am I?)
I approve the length of this video.
needed just one more bahee second!

"It just works" is a dangerous phrase to say. You might summon Todd Howard and unleash his wrath upon you.
That bugera vs marshall video would be sweet. As usual, good video, dude, keep 'em coming.
Genius video Kristian! Do you have a Laney? I am the hugest Tony Tommi fan! Would love to see you use one and hear the tones you get! Hmm Vol. 666? Haha! Metal Mania!
Tony Tommi was the original goat.
I'd love to test some Laneys Warren!
That's on the list and has been demanded by a lot of people.
Both their classic high gain amps (like the Iommi) and their modern stuff.
I have a Laney LC 30 II, best clean tone ever, for me !
@@KohleAudioKult Definitely check out the Ironheart series amps my dude
@@KohleAudioKult great! I’ll be glued to the screen on that one!! Tony Iommi is one of the players that made me want to play guitar!
Marshall JCM800 + RAT = instant Morbid Angel goodness.
And Obituary, if you crank the bass!
Love the morbid angel tone
@@ilikepotatoes1345 I think if you want full blown obituary you need to shut off the tone nob on the guitar and I think celtic frost did that aswell
@@jackko21 Ofcourse, tone all the way off is the main part of that sound. A medium output humbucker, tone all the way off, a proco rat (with the gain at like 1 o'clock, just before it gets fuzzy), any amp that can get a crunchy JCM800 type of sound (tons of bass, scooped mids and a good amount of treble) and you're all set.
"there is no point in playing any amp clean" i do support this message!!
The RAT with the TS is top tier
Drums sound too clean in modern metal!! Nasty drums next!!
Yes please!
1176 on brit mode for everything
St anger drums
@@Aubreyyy you just need a trashcan instead of snare
Great demo - this is a prime example of how you can get different flavors out of the same amp without a lot of $ and time. I've had success with a KTR in front of a high gain amp to bring in some great saturation - people tend to use it as a clean boost but playing with the settings all around opens up a whole world of interesting tones.
Honestly, this straight up reminds me of my favourite metal tone I’ve ever got for a record I was recording - Hiwatt custom 50, jumped with both channels driving STUPIDLY hard, and then boosted with a SD1.... was the most mental guitar tone I’ve ever had hahah!
A Silicon Treble Booster into the bass channel. Its the old Judas Priest tone. Add a graphic EQ pedal into the mix to drive the amp into more overdrive and you're set.
the 9v pedals wouldnt be ideal. something like TC integrated pre which is 18/36v would be a great clean boost and an even more great way to cut the lows and just drive the front end of that plexi.
Definitly a great idea, old JP tones just kill! But I think, they used different Marshalls, not sure.
Thats my settings,a laney t100 full on treble with litle gain (3) to use it as treble booster, then my amp on crunch channel (or any amp) puff magic crunch, grindy dirty tone, but agresive. Like a beast roaring behind me.
Anyone remember Feedback?? Haha. Man...those were the days.
*computer turns towards amp* “I’m sorry I can’t be her. 😭”
I know right! recorded a band last year and we captured real amps, feedback all over the record! I had another local producer email asking me how I got my feedback sounds lol. 🤷🏻
I have an old asf Peavy backstage 50 so yeah I deal with feedback every day
Right? I was just thinking about this the other day as i was listening to Slaughter of the Soul
The only amp I have now is a 120W Peavey 6505+ so yeah.. feedback is still very much a thing.
Haha, video is up a couple of hours and the donner fuzz is already sold out on amazon. :D
Cool to see how the combinations of 4 absoulte classics (EMG81, TS, Rat, Plexi) is so amazing for a rather unusual sound!
I’d be interested to see a video about mixing amps and cabs, like Adam Jones and his Diezels and Marshall. I’ve also read about Billie Joe from Green Day using a higher gain and lower gain amp, one scooped and the other mid heavy to have both distortion and note clarity
Every day that passes the more I like Telecasters for metal.
Either that or really bright humbuckers.
JCM 800 and Plexis, usually when you have a good booster works like a charm ! Very nice tone man !
Echoplex tube preamp
Man Richie Faulkner has been doing IG streams lately playing metal riffs through an attenuated cranked Super Lead and it just sounds awesome
When you used the rat with the tube screamer, the tone you created really reminds me of my old Peavey XXX. I miss that amp, what a KILLER tone! Herzlichen Glückwunsch!
I love my XXX, after 20 years still my favorite. Just face melting without any need for preamp pedals.
Its funny one of my favourite tones is a TS style OD (to tighten the bass) into a RAT type pedal(I use a Keeley Stahlhammer or a TRex Mudhonney2), into a DOD Gunslinger (which is basically a JCM800/Plexi in a box pedal) loved the tone you got here with the RAT
Heyho! There you go.
We all choose the cool stuff in the end. 😜
I love that the Donner 'Stylish Fuzz' has BUSTAIN!
Same lmao
Sounded very even across the frequencies, but still had enough attitude. Bargain basement distortion.
I often put rat style pedals infront of my Marshall JMP which was recently retubed with FREE TAD tubes thanks to you! It's a 2203, not a super bass but regardless, incredible sounding. I think my next amp may be a 1959.
2204 here, just waiting for some new filter caps. The originals still in it, so I try not to use it to much before I get them swapped out 😅
Wrong.
Stop flogging a dead horse.
Marshall is designed to play with other instruments like saxophone and piano etc.
They designed the bass out of the product.
Graduate to other brands and stay away from Marshall products.
Opened my mind big time on blending just a tad of fuzz I use to hate fuzz but I gonna try mixing it in again
Check out the other video I did about blending Fuzz. Lotsa cool options there.
ruclips.net/video/ty3-OZrhbx4/видео.html
Had the same mind opening experience when I say Kohle blending an HM2 tone with Aborted's main tone. Such an awesome way to add variety and dirt to certain sections.
That RAT sounded so darn hardcore like.
Awesome man! I have a plexi and now ill put a moden distortion in front of it!
Kool video man!! I’d love to just spend one day in your amazing studio, keep up the amazing work
A ProCo RAT driving a Super Lead happened to be the tone of choice for Metallica's Kill 'em All!
Oh really? Interesting.
Jose modded Marshall but yes
Contrary to popular myth; channel-jumping on a 4-holer will half the gain... not double it. The first two gain stages on a Super Lead are running in parallel... not cascaded in series as they are on a two-input Master Volume 2203/2204. #TheMoreYouKnow
With these pedals you can cover everything from an entombed sound to a doomy sound
I like it 😍
You summed it up pretty well, haha!
Wrong.
Stay away from Marshall products.
It's not your business.
*Nasty is a Boss FZ1-W. 🏆🎵🎶🎸 I’m ordering one soon because it is different compared to everyone playing different Peavey amps with a massive boost.*
Would really like to hear more vids like this that incorporate more esoteric distortion/fuzz combos. Try runing a ts into an EHX Russian Green fuzz sometime for a really thick and saturated tone.
I think I did that in my latest fuzz video.
Yes Kristian, guitars are too clean in metal. GIVE ME FILTH
Absolutely! Clean, low-gain guitars in metal just sound "polite", not brutal. More nastiness!
Lee Malia from BMTH plays his modern tones through distortion and JCM800 i think, so simple. I got here TS9 and bunch of TCE pedals like Spark, MojoMojo and Dark Matter, wanna try how they sounds through plexi.
Everyone sounds the same nowadays, because we all use the same plugins, same drums, etc, chasing THAT ONE TONE. It's so refreshing to see this kind of video honestly. EMGs (why not?), just straight up old school amp situation. Love it.
Thanks man!
Yeah, that's the whole idea on this channel when it comes to guitar tones.
Not only reviewing the same plugins everybody is using, haha!
Rat and plexi with greenbacks is one of my favourites. My rat is set up like dist 9 o clock to 12 o clock filter all the way to bright side and volume full, that makes some magic happen I think that the greenbacks are the key to open plexis potential and the crunchines.
and the plexi is set to that cleanish sweet spot you talked about. forgot to mention that
I seriously love just listening to your opinions and takes on each tone, makes me delve deeper into my production, I'm deaf in the left and partial loss in the right (Afghanistan combat), so I take your words and apply it to what I hear and get it close to what in listening to right now. Super informative, utmost appreciation ... As you're saying "this was my very quick and spontaneous..." Lol
Thanks man! ❤️🍺
Very sorry about your hearing loss. But I’m happy to guide you through the tone jungle!
Jan Jansohn rung a bell, then I remembered that he played for Agathodaimon for a while!
🤘🏼😉
Some of the stuff especially with the rat reminded me of bloodbath
When the phase splitter is cranked the tonestack becomes pre-eq so it doesnt affect the tone so much. It makes perfect sense.
Love it! I've been adding stupid crazy fuzz as basically an automation move in my mixes. Only on certain riffs. I love it. The more broken and crazy the better 💪🍺
Also one of the best metal guitar tones IMO are Tom Warrior's on early Celtic Frost.
Cheap Ibanez Iceman...tone rolled off...into a tube screamer into a JCM 800 2203
Monstrous tone.
Suggestion: Test some old peavey amps (supreme 160, transtube, etc). Love the show
cool concept! That patch thing reminds modular synths from the same era
This works surprisingly well with plugins!
Thanks Kohle for this amazing ideas.
A lot of the stuff I do here also works in the digital domain.
As long as people understand latency (especially when mixing analog and digital gear or when using digital hardware) you can even combine both worlds!
I always liked the Tube Screamer but really liked what you did with the Donnor Fuzz. I think I want a Donnor now. I don't have a Plexi but I do have an old JCM 800 2203. Wonder if it will come close to what you got.
Other good , affordable Fuzzes, Behringer Super Fuzz (you covered that on your Fuzz vid costs 20-25 $/£/Euro) , Big Muff Nano (50-60 $/£/Euro), TC Rusty Fuzz (30-35£/$/Euro), DOD Carcosa (60-70 £/$/Euro)
That's because with the electronics in the EMGs, it compresses the signal so that it sounds balanced across the board no matter your picking dynamic.
All I have to say is YES! bring back the DIRT!!
Awesome video as always!
I recently got a 50 watt plexi reisssue from the late 90s and in my opinion boosting it with a Boss SD1 gets it pretty tight (as tight as these old amps can be), but I'm thinking of getting a compressor to pair with the SD1 and thicken up the tone just a little bit more.
After watching this video I also need a Rat, that tone together with the Tubescreamer was amazing!
I’ve been using a REVV G3 with mu 2203 for quite some time now and I’m pretty satisfied, with my modern metal sound :)
I love that marshalls are getting a comeback in modern metal(core)!
To me it seems a marshall takes pedals way better than a 5150 for example, wich gives you tons of different tones :)
Yes! Would love to see the Marshall/Bugera comparison
You can get a lot more distortion out of that amp from just a diode bound before the EQ and add a master volume taped off the treble wiper. Much cheaper than a pedal and it makes the amp far more versatile.
Thanks!
As always, very refreshing content and so cool to see that a Rat can be used for something else than Territorial pissing of Nirvana (that's the only song I ever played with a rat 😝).
Man I would love to see you tackling in a video, Neural DSP plugins. You are a studio guy, you have the experience of the real gear and the real metal sound that we all crave for. It would be amazing to see you taking the Fortin Nameless for a ride , Nolly, Archetype Gojira or the recent SLO-100 !! These plugins are now getting notorious and very respected as the Metal ultimate plugins. I would really love to hear your opinion and see what you do with it. Cheers 🤘
I threw a misha mansoor pro tone overdrive behind the rat clone myomorpha and it sounds so unique i love it
Built a clone of the Black Russian big muff pi and it sounds incredible for metal tones; can’t do the super fast stuff, but sounds awesome for ripping fat riffs. Played it through the clean channel of my blackstar ht20 that I recently upgraded with a greenback
The Turbo RAT is perhaps my all time favourite distortion pedal and ever since moving to the digital world, I've been substituting it with a TS+RAT combo for almost all of the (very few) leads I'm doing (as I'm still to find a digital Turbo RAT). Sure, the Turbo's LED clip stage is a bit different, but essentially it's a higher-gain and brighter RAT, so with a disciplined RAT setup, this combination gets to the ballpark. I use it with graduates of the British amp school (both Orange and Marshall-style stuff); nice to see that it kinda makes sense also for real engineers :)
I'm gonna check out the Turbo then!
My new favorite RUclips channel!
Welcome! 🍺🤪❤️
Nice video man! I just can't get enough of these expirmental tone videos. I don't know why but i keep picturing you like a beer brewer crafting your exotic and unique tone together hahaha. I would be really intressed in a video where you cover all tones/sounds that can be achieved with a rectifier. Because everyone makes it sound the same but I think its a very versatile amp.
Keep chuggin mate!
Thanks man!
Ironically The Recto is THE amp that I only use for one sound too. At last my very old two channel version. Never liked the vintage mode or what it is called.
Maybe I need to revisit it.
I’m using EL34s these days though.
That rat sounds awesome! I guess if Obituary uses it, it has to be nasty.
What order are you running the Rat and TS in? TS into Rat would be the "expected" order, but for max tightness, maybe Rat first to let the TS cut more bass?
TS always first!
I have Donner stylish Fuzz pedal. It is actually good one and i mix it with Donner metalhead distortion for some stoner doom metal stuff.
Thx for your support!!
I have a donner. Sounds okish guess
I use many amps and one of my fav is the Marshall plexi with Friedman Be Od
the tone at 14:31 is killlllller
Nice to see the Mode 4 cab in use. I have the same cab and love it. The cabs were so much better than the amp heads themselves.
I agree
Hi Kohle, yes- i want a "vs" video from this Marshall and the Bugera ;)
Greetings and cheers!
Tobias
Love it! Exactly what I want to see! I love the Marshall Mode four cab. I have the 400 watt one with the K100 speakers
how do you "get rid of" those horrible sounds with the high gain sounds? I have so many issues with that when trying to record. My signal chain is guitar into a Tube Amp into a Torpedo Load box and then into a DAW and through your Eminence IRs loaded into NadIR. the quality is something else compared to digital amp sims. I'm just not sure where to target my tone to get rid of the extra noise and it makes me feel like i'm doing something wrong, so seeing you generate the same issues now is an eye opener! Id love to see a video where you deal with that!
I love your videos! Dirty guitar tones are the ones that matter! keep it up!
Hello, Thanks for the vidéo, I love the Plexi. You could try it with the distortion of the tube screamer, it's good, you wil see. Can you do a video with Bugera 33XL please?
Holy shit I was laughing. Shitty fuzz, dialed until there's no highs then... at a tubescreamer. Fuck that made my day.
Does the Plexi break up like the JCM800? Seems like I like cranked JCM800 tones better but haven't heard enough people trying to capture a cranked plexi metal tone on youtube. I wish I could afford an old 2203! Cranked amp tone seems to be the thing I need in my life. I play technical Death Metal and want a modernish tone but with power tube saturation and tons of compression and liquid tremolo-picked palm mutes that sound like one long churning miasma.
That Driftwood (loved the video on that one) mops the floor with that Marshall....Rat pedal sounded the best
the revv g3 is still my favorite distortion pedal since 4 years, trying hundreds of those
Give me a fuzz set with the gain low and the volume cranked, into my Rockerverb or my Triple XXX II, neck pickup with the tone rolled off to get that octave up, nasty sound and it’s great.
Note definition on the revv was nice
Super cool back to Sabbath and Slayer and Doom video, nasty tones.
I will never play a Marshall, but I'd like to see the Marshall-Bugera comparison. I think Bugera makes good stuff for non-touring artists.
Alternative title: Metal toanz with tubes: Distortion Pedals go brrr.
I probably shouldn't be trying to give you tips, but I get extremely brutal tones with my 68 50 watt Plexi/1987, that broken sound in the low-end your hearing, a big part of that is coming from jumping your channels, plug straight into the high treble Channel with no jumper you will get more gain and it will be a hell of a lot tighter, even though you're not plugged into the normal Channel the normal Channel volume will still affect the tone, I find I like it best around 3 or 4 Max for a metal tone, the high treble Channel I run at 8 or 7, this will give you a fat enough sound with plenty of highs and cut, another trick is to run the present High and the treble low this will give you more gain as well but I generally run it with presents around 3 or 4 and treble at 5, regardless of where you have the EQ set as long as the Bass is under halfway, you will get way tighter and more punchy metal tones..... the main thing is not jumpering the channels, to me that just cuts gain and adds mud therefore when you boost it it collapses
I’m not a Plexi expert and I like your tips! Thanks!
A really cool vst just released from fuse audio labs ( also German 🙂) called dozerdrive. A fuzz face and a tube screamer combined, can be parallel with mix knob or series with a choice to fuzz screamer or screamer fuzz. Has some cool switches for mods to give the screamer more balls or the fuzz more destruction. Goes from polite to really rude and everywhere in between.
I'll have a look. Thanks!
Kohle cracks me up....breaks wives tales...and says... "its true" .so great..
which tales?
I grew up on nu-metal and deathgrind. Both had dirtier guitars than most djent and metalcore nowadays (but also most deathgrind nowadays too). This is not an offence, just a historical difference I noticed. I prefer the hard rock/nu-metal song structure nowadays, so I look up for that guitar tone (and that variation of overall song energy and texture).
I’ve always loved amps which take pedals well... used to play live running a Carvin Valvemaster 100, which took pedal really well, and had as much headroom as a Hiwatt...
I wish i soon get some real amp, with torpedo captor, getting terribly tired of plugins. They always possess ton of white noise in sound, as well as mush in low mids, and when you filter all that you end up with boxy, or darker sound. If its not darker or boxy then it sounds over processed with later signal chain which destroys that natural raw sound of amps we want and love to hear in metal music.
Real deal just sound open, clear, defined, and always have better transient pick attack.
I enjoy every of your videos, and you talk in very friendly way, i sometimes feel like hanging out in your studio even obviously i never being there. :)
Keep making these experimental videos with various amps and pedals.
Metal regards from Bosnia and Herzegovina. \m/
Thanks man! and i agree that both real amps and cabs are more fun than plugins and IR players with endless lists.
I just got my first high gain amp after FAR too long. It's not even very good (Peavey 6505+ 112 combo turned into a head), but trust me, when I am playing it I NEVER feel like switching to my plugins.
Thanks Kohle! ❤🍻 Jensen speakers & Jansohn Amp ^^ Loving the Rat and OhMyGoat sound 👌
A DS-1, Rat, HM-2 swedish style (very reccomended on this amp!!) or just the booster pedal. And GT12-75 speakers please. Sounds way more in your face then these Jensen. Not sure though... A/B comparison would be nice. These amps are designed to be loaded with GT12's.
I had a lot of fun boosting metal zone with tubescreamer.
My favorite studio sensei!!
Pure nastiness. I love it!
Something cool for a future vid: Can you run through the Benighted guit tones on Necrobreed? It's such a disgusting and strident tone. One of my favorite guitar tones ever in modern metal. Would really love to see that one :)
I like the Rat too. It's basically a doom box in front of that amp and also has a great high end sizzle that is just awesome sounding.
Cheers
That was that weird pedal that Olivier brought with him. We played it into my Diezel D-Moll, then kempered just the amp to be able to tweak it even more on the Kemper. Then pedal into Kemper.
I have an Atomic Amplifirebox and with the Oh My Goat, this sounds like how I set the Dual Rectifier amp model. I turn the bass all the way down, the mids all the way up, and the treble just past noon. Then I boost it with a TS7 Tubescreamer. But you gave me an idea to try the Amplifirebox's JCM 800 model, then mess with the parametric EQ.
I recently tried the 2204 model on my Helix, and god damn does that thing scream when set right
Boost out front, gain at 3 (adjust to taste), crank the bass, middle, treble, and BIAS (yup, the bias) to 10, and tweak from there
Just tried to recreate in Helix chain with a TS > RAT>Brit Plexi Jump amp + some tweaking and it sounds too close to this video. Great!!!
Very nice video! So funny because I always loved the RAT best growing up. But I would get a lot of pushback from my colleagues haha! Where are they now? Probably complaining about some procedure to which someone did not adhere. Yes very badass with the OD. And I am also a big EMG fan. Thank you!
You're welcome! Brothers in Gain, haha!
@@KohleAudioKult 😄
I would love to see the Plexi Bugera comparison
Dude I love your stuff. All your tones are incredible. Have you ever considered creating some Kemper profile packs? I know I would buy them in a heart beat. Keep on keeping it brutal dude!! Your channel is the best.
Plexi’s are just magical.
Double thumbs up for bringing in the Rat.
Great video! You’ve been using a lot of fuzzes lately which is awesome, and I have a recommendation I haven’t seen you do yet. Run a fuzz into an overdrive with no boost. Use a little fuzz on the fuzz pedal, and then no gain on the overdrive and it creates this midforward tone very similar to an HM2 in some cases. Check it out and keep it up!
Good idea! Thanks!
The Marshall MF Cab should be a great one to put in some Celestion K100.. Guitars on Ghost reveries were recorded with that combination, If I remember correctly. With four (!) different amps blended.
I'm pretty sure Jens didn't only use that cab on the record. K100s sound ok their own, but great when blended.
I'm pretty sure, you are right. It's an older information, from a time where studio tricks were not revealed like today. Plus K100 solo in a mix is definitly meh, I agree.
I use a mix of Boss Metalcore(for some tightness) And metal muff
The Metalcore is badass
@@thephoenixcycle8854 Yessir
Kohle you should release a stand alone version of the grind channel of the grindstein to use in this kind of context, I already have a nice distortion pedal on my board and would love a “cleaner” version of the hm2 to dirty things up with!!
The Grindstein has a mixknob.
Here you can either blend the chainsaw channel with the included bottom shaker channel, or disable the bottom shaker channel by plugging in your favorite pedal into the efx loop. Problem solved! ❤️🤪🍺
In Sweden I tried my B.C. Rich JR.V loaded with SD Blackout1 in the bridge by a shop that installed it and me and who fixed it went to the amps room at that guitar shop and plugged to a Malmsteen amp patched and I riffed out Wolf by Iced Earth and me was blowed out by the sound and the guy in the shop was looking at the amp like.....is this true?! Can never heard this amp sounded like this! Both of us said it's a good result! But damn dunno of the Malmsteen amp is more gainy than the original but I remember the dude's face like "Unbelievable" expression by the sound
that funkin drumroom kicks arse
Excellent video. Thanks! Did you play with the $500 Marshall DSL20HR? Can you get anything useful from the Classic Gain channel?
