I assumed it was because he had already gotten sensory overload and was already starting to die. Like when something is so hot, you don't feel it for a second or, sometimes, it feels cold rather than hot. But, you could be right about all the pain he's endured in his life making him more tolerant. Or, maybe both. Or maybe they just wanted him to have one last cool line before he died.

From a scientific point I agree with you and I think you’re right because of some of the nuclear accidents that have taken place where people were instantly exposed to many times over lethal amount of radiation who didn’t die right away they slowly melted from within and grew in pain over time so theoretically if he did have an elevated pain tolerance he might not notice the immediate effects with the adrenaline rush and sheer mental fortitude to withstand but he figured we’d only be about 10 seconds

Also keep in mind that he saw the stones harm Banner first and then Thanos just a moment before he took them into himself, so he was able to brace himself for it somewhat. Tony Stark has a great deal of willpower, and in that moment he needed to keep his attention on the threat in front of him, not the sensations coursing through him.

In Infinity War, Thanos says "The hardest choices require the strongest wills". Then, we also know that the Infinity Stones have some degree of sentience or some kind of vague ability to manifest their "will". So, knowing these two things, I think the reason why Tony was able to withstand the power of the stones is because he, simply put, has a lot more willpower than Thanos or Banner/Hulk. He's willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of everyone else, so he's accepted it, whereas neither Thanos nor the Hulk were willing to die for the snap.
I guess a fitting analogy would be if you fall into a river and try to escape by going against the flow, you're going to struggle a lot, even if you do manage to make it out. But Tony essentially accepted his fate and went with the flow.

My personal theory is that it’s either the Soul Stone, the Mind Stone, or both that are boosting the power surges with Endgame Thanos and Professor Hulk. Endgame Thanos is conflicted with his desires and has ultimately strayed from the thing he originally thought he was meant for: Snapping half of all life in the universe. The Mind Stone probably upped its surges as it sees this Thanos unfit to snap.
For Professor Hulk, it’s probably both Mind and Soul Stones. The Soul Stone sees Prof. Hulk (and probably the rest of the Avengers) as crazy since snapping half of the universe back will cause massive chaos and more devastating damage than the one Thanos did. And/or theMind Stone upped it’s surge since Hulk sorta underestimated it’s maximum power as some “gamma radiation here and there nothing special”.
Tony resisted the pain probably cuz the Stones probably nerfed their surge, enough so that Tony can snap. They see him as a righteous man that will do any sacrifice for the good of his world.
Or you can go the more technical and say that the Nano Gauntlet is weaker than the Infinity Gauntlet but cmon that’s lame

Maybe it's because of what he was planning to use them for. Hulk was trying to bring back Natasha along with everyone else, and the Soul Stone probably didn't like that, so it made the others cause him pain, but since Tony was just trying to eliminate Thanos and his army, the Stones weren't bothered. This also explains why the energy surge stayed so strong on Hulk, while on Tony it stabilized quickly.
Plus, Tony is more used to pain due to how much he's been thrown around in the movies, while Banner doesn't usually feel pain as The Hulk (or at least he doesn't remember Hulk's pain). Not to mention Tony already knew it would hurt, while Hulk was taken off-guard.

    • @someoneofsomething

@@MeMe-tz5th I think it was mostly willpower and his nerves were probably completely fried by the time he snapped. It's sad to think about but Tony was probably dying before the first syllable came out. He only hung on due to sheer willpower and determination to see this through. His armor was probably shielding him in some way but I don't think Tony's armor was made to protect him at this point. It was made with the sole purpose of protecting others and the Infinity Gauntlet part of it was probably made so Tony could do exactly what he did if the other one didn't work. This all points to an unfortunate conclusion that Tony knew he would have to die. If the Radiation from the stones didn't kill him he was gonna die from his wounds anyways.
It's kinda a sad thought but I find it crazy how Tony's original reasoning for making the Armor went Full Circle in a lot of ways. In the beginning it was self preservation and in the end it was the exact opposite.

I feel that the arc reactor on his chest also plays a part in this since the Avengers have established that the scepter didn't affect tony for whatever reason but it affected other people. We also don't know what kind of element it is based on since it has never been established or the limits of its capabilities are in the movies. We don't know its power other than powering the suit and most likely helps charge the ironman armor when Thor uses his lighting on him as seen in the Avengers and Endgame since it looks like the armor was from ironman 2 in the Avengers and we don't know whether the suit automatically recharges itself when struck by lightning otherwise it is left unknown to us what else it can do other than being used as a battery.

It’s like the entire “Mcguffin” of that movie was lost/discarded moving forward and was a totally missed opportunity to circle back to it given how it’s been pretty well established that Tony had a strong tendency to recognize & account for prior weaknesses in designing future suits. Actually I think your point is among the more probable yet overlooked explanations… although I don’t recall any reference or evidence he actively incorporated the Extremis in his heart surgery procedure, in the movies at least. However it would make a great loose thread they could pull to bring him back for real in future films saying he either faked his own death to avoid any backlash from the likes of the Flagsmashers etc.

Right in line with what I was thinking as far as Hulk's seeming difficulty making his snap happen! He was trying to will half the universe back into existence, the complete opposite of Thanos' destruction...Destruction is much simpler than creating and, I'm guessing Hulk had an even more difficult snap than Thanos given how long it took him to get the stones' powers under control, PLUS the fact that he was trying to bring Nat back as well, in spite of what they were told about the finality of the Soul Stone sacrifice by Red Skull. Tony, I feel was aided by one, wearing his armor, and though Hulk could still put on the gauntlet, Tony designed it. And two, he also was snapping for a reason of 'destruction' much like Thanos' snap though on a massively smaller scale. I also believe he had accepted his fate so wholeheartedly and was so at peace with that, perhaps making the power a bit easier to bear. Who knows, perhaps the Mind and/or Soul stones sensed his complete, willing sacrifice and helped with that strain a bit.

My theory might be contradictory, but here goes.
As far as we understand this last iteration of Tony's suit was armed for offence more than defence and not for the sake of keeping Tony safe(r) than any prior iteration. Very early in the battle with Thanos, he takes an accidental blow from Mjolnir and knocks out until everyone from 5 years to present time have arrived to join battle. He is also 5 years older at this time and living in isolation from any fight. He is likely unfit even as he prepares for the journey to go back in time. Not doubting he has come to withstand pain - Civil War being the bloodiest, perhaps - I actually don't think he could have withstood the pain from the stones, and the offence of his now damaged suit at the time he is about to snap is actually absorbing most of the energy which is less apparent around his exposed body than we saw with Bruce and Thanos. Being older and unfit - maybe he cannot withstand the energy at all. And, yes, the power of his mind and determination to end 11 years of Thanos in his head is what is holding him together in his final moment. But I am more inclined to believe that his suit's offensive abilities are probably heightened by the stones just enough to allow him to snap, but the damage is already severe, his older and more feeble body does not withstand the energy surge to rid a "small" army which may have taken less "work" than Bruce's effort to bring back billions or trillions of all forms of life that were lost, PLUS the impossible of trying to bring back Natasha... for which he was punished for defiance of that everlasting exchange it takes to earn the soul stone, the stone which Red Skull said seems to have its own wisdom.

Okay so that doesn't track because in Infinity War The Avengers beat the ever-living crap out of Thanos in infinity war on Titan. Tony Stark, in his Iron Man suit, gave him everything that he had hitting him with pulsars and pulverizing him. Only to split his cheek and the mad Titan shrugged it off saying " All that for a drop of blood." Also he took Storm breaker to the chest and Thor pushing it in deeper and in all that pain still snapped.
Similarly the same goes for Hulk Tony fought him in Age of Ultran and only by trapping him was he able to be successful. Hulk can take pain.
I think the reason Tony was able to endure the power of the stones was he only wanted to snap an army out of existence. Not like Thanos who snapped out half the Universe, which takes a ton of power to do. Not like Hulk who TRIED to bring Natasha back and was severely punished by the soul stone for trying.
I love Tony Stark and Ironman, I'd like to believe he could endure more pain than Thanos but Tony was hit by Thor's hammer in Endgame when Thanos deflected it into him and it knocked him out cold. Thanos took multiple hits and lightening and continued to fight Cap. So I'm sorry come up with a better theory cause this doesn't work

    Here is my theory...
The act of snapping away half the life in the universe may take a lot of power from the stones. The wielder is the conduit that this power surges through. The act of snapping that half back into existence takes the same power. The stones are, in a way, sentient. Like Mul'nir, the stones can sense the worthiness of the user. The stones knew what Tony Stark would ask of them. Snapping away Thanos and his army is much less than half of all life. So it is a much smaller use of power. Even though he sacrificed his own life. Since he was willing to trade his life for everyone else. The stones didn't kill him immediately.

  • @Un4gettablewolf

The thing I came up with is this, tony was chosen. Being someone who has always put his life on the line and willing to die for others, the stones chose Tony because he was willing to die for everyone. And the Thanos we see at the end of endgame is not the same Thanos we see in infinity war. The Thanos in infinity war wanted to fix a broken universe even at the cost of his own love(remember, he mourned losing gamora) The one we get in endgame wanted to kill everyone and make a new universe in HIS own image. Also he didn't give up the one he loved most so the stones chose to hurt him and the hulk. Maybe even kill them if they kept it on.. the Thanos also in infinity war was more merciful than the one in endgame only killing the ones he knew would slow him down for correcting the universe.

It is not because of that. It is because the soul stone can determine who is worth and who isn't. Hulk wasn't worthy and nor was Thanos which is why you can see that the stones were "attacking" them, but for Tony, the soul stone saw his intentions and made it easier for him. It has nothing to do with pain and how much each character receives.

You can see that Starks nano tech can absorb/block a direct blow from the power stone when he is facing thanos as Tony forms a shield.

During the suit up scenes in both endgame and infinity war, we see Tony double tap the arc reactor, bringing the nano-bots to form around his body as a suit-like shape. He no longer has the arc reactor inside of his chest to shield his heart from the stone’s power. Making the theory that the arc reactor from Avengers shielded him highly unlikely.

I have to disagree. I believe since Tony's reason for wearing the stones was pure of heart and doesnt want anything thats against the stones ability. Although Thanos felt his reason was pure it wasn't and you see the stones are against it when he gets the soul stone. Gamora asks him if it was worth it. He was a butcher with his own agaenda. The Hulk also was fighting the stones with him trying to bring Nat back even though he knew it wasnt allowed or possible. Tony was the one who truly wanted to do good with no selfish wishes for himself. Thats just my opinion.

I like to think the intensity of the surge is directly related to the scale and price of the intended wish when the stones are assembled. If some guy named Joe wanted to make a sandwich using the ingredients in his refrigerator, it'd probably just feel like a static shock, maybe a shock from an electrical outlet or a honeybee sting or something. Stark wanted to merely snap away Thanos and his army, so while it was a lot of pain and destruction, it was nowhere near as much as the Hulk, who wanted to snap back the half that Thanos snapped away, or to Thanos, who literally wanted to destroy all 6 infinity stones.

    1. You have his armor, /nano tech healing him
    2. Yes is life of physical pain.
But you a few more factors to take into consideration.
    3. His feelings of responsibility to the world.
    A. Being the privileged and genius man he is.
    B. Redemption from the time he sold weapons and the blood on his hands
    C. Being the leader ( he would see himself as the leader no mater what..)
    4. His Pride, he may have been in pain but refused to show it especially to Thanos.
    5. Peter Parker. Anger, regret, revenge, at the loss of someone he took underwing and treated alot like a son.
    This is powerful powerful motivation.
And we have learned that will power.. dose pay a role when it comes to the stones.

I am pretty sure it is a combination of several factors. First, and possibly the largest, reason would be the Arc Reactor in his suit. As seen in original Avengers and Endgame, it is capable of absorbing energy (the new unnamed element Tony made for it is), with Thor's Mjölnir causing a surge of over 400% capacity. Second would be the fact that his entire body is covered in metal alloy from the suit. Yes, it does get into his body, but the energy is also conducted across every inch of his armor and dampens it. And thirdly, yes, all the crap he's been through has given him resistance to mental and physical pain, and the thought of losing his family is what pushed the guy over the edge. Sad to see him go.

The Arc Reactor in his chest is a machine that is normally much much larger and his small one generates the same amount of power. Tony also has a very strong will. A will I would say is stronger than Banner or even Thanos. I mean, look at all that he endured in his first movie. He was beaten and tortured, and he didn't give in. He fought his way out. He didn't let anything stand in his way of getting home.

I assume that Tony knows how painful it is, thus asked Friday to preset the snap in the first place before he took the stones. Meaning, once he took the stones, he was writhing in pain but his iron nanotech suit kept him in place. Friday snapped his fingers for him while he simply gave the will to snap.
If course like the video says he is mentally very strong. For example in Iron Man 1 he climbed downstairs to get the arc reactor after going into cardiac arrest for 15 minutes, and immediately went to suit up and save Pepper once he learned Pepper was in danger. Whatever his body couldn't do, his suit does it for him, while his mind is clear and determined.

My theory is that Tony upgraded his suit agin during the 5 yr span to the point that it can tank most of and power surge it receives. Also I do believe that after different kinds of fights with different kinds of enemies, by now, Tony had upgraded his suit to include some sort of parameters that helps him heal and recover while in the suit. Idk. Just remember that Tony uses his past shortcomings as his advantage whenever he rolls out a new suit (Ultra charged repulser powered by Thor's lightning, heater, parachute, his fix to the freezing problem, etc) like, whenever he realizes something that's missing, he almost immediately fixes it and implements it in a new suit.
Using this logic, I think they might've analyzed headless Thanos' body and from that, calculated how much damage it had done (Hence why Prof. Hulk said that he'd seen the damage, mostly Gamma). Just a theory tho.

It is like his first encounter with Thor in the first Avengers movie when the suit absorbed the lightning blast from Mjolnir before he redirected back to Thor! Thanos had to make a sacrifice to obtain it and successfully wield the gauntlet, but hulk did not make any sacrifices, in fact he tried to undo Natasha's sacrifice so the stones punished him for it. In the case of Tony Stark, he was sacrificing himself, and he did so willingly, as a result the stones allowed him to take the shot in the process of his sacrifice.

The stones have some form of sentience and the soul stone has a special place in that it is able to judge the wielder of the stones and either allow access, limit the power or outright deny their use. I believe the soul stone judeged Tony and saw what he wanted to do was good and so allowed him to sacrifice himself for the good of all living creatures in the universe. Remember that Thanos was set to destroy every living thing in the universe this time around after seeing that living half alive was a bad idea since they wouldn’t be “grateful” in his mind for the sacrifice. So Tony was allowed to use the stones to rid the universe of Thanos and his army once and for all and eliminate the threat of total universal genocide.

Perhaps the pain of the stones dissipated because once the soul stone connected with Tony’s armor, it showed Tony’s motives as pure, he only wanted to save the universe and beat the bad guy. He was in that moment worthy of the stones. i think its also probably possible that the reactor that is literally in his chest is taking a lot of the energy and probably also causing his heart to beat a ton faster which allows his body to make a lot more adrenaline at a much faster rate which adds to his already superhuman pain tolerance which would also explain why afterwards he is panting a lot and seems dizzy and weak because after snapping his fingers the reactor obviously struggled and like broke. because of that his heart basically went from like a million miles a minute to very extremely slow. this would be a shock to his entire system which would most likely cause internal damage that the infinity stones didnt already do and would explain why he didnt feel all the pain suddenly after snapping and having the adrenaline gone, because his system destroyed that part of his brain functions from the overload of adrenaline to a sudden slight trickle of production. or at least thats what i think *shrug*

So intense it was that even with the suit diffusing the energy, it killed him.

I always figured the Hulk's extreme pain was from trying hard to bring Black Widow back.
