  • Title says it all. Straightforward, no nonsense 1 to 1 comparison of the NEW Benson Germanium preamp to it's older brother, the original Benson Preamp. There are differences, it is subtle but definitely a noticeable difference and hopefully this helps you decide which is right for you, because spoiler: They are both awesome.
Thanks to ‪@knoxguitars‬ for making this video happen and ‪@BensonAmps‬ for making these period.

Thanks for the comparison. It would be interesting to hear how they sound stacking in front of pedals - both before something like a Nobels and after.

Both excellent, but I think the Germanium is just a bit more dynamic with the overtones. The saturation grains a bit larger if that makes sense. The Ge gets my pick.

I actually agree. Both are great, but I kinda like the subtle difference in favor of the germanium.

Germanium seems to have a bit more sag. Both sound good though.

I don’t disagree. It KINDA feels like that as well but I’m not sure if that just placebo from the low end being the most different aspect to me. Still subtle, and yes. Both great

@@aaroncporter I finally got my hands on both of these pedals, and to follow up on this little discussion, I think it's a combination of the germanium one having both a little more low end and just a touch more sag than the original preamp. Jay Leonard J described the original was being like a plexi and the germanium one as being like the JTM 45. This is a pretty apt description in my opinion. Ultimately, I like the germanium one a tad more because of that little bit of sag and the more rounded tone overall. They're both pretty great though.

@@TheRodge2112 I agree! I have a 45 clone and it's my favorite, most at home for me as well. It is a subtle difference between the 2.
