I was in a Korean rock n roll band back in the late 60's called the Devils. We sand this song in a verry similar tempo to what BTS is doing here. I guess we were about 50 years ahead of our time. I was the only American to ever be in this group and I sang Arirang in Korean, which was very unique.
I never realized BTS's song covered all the regional versions! I LOVE their cover of Arirang and it made me explore so much more about Arirang and traditional Korean music! I learned that there are different variations but I never put together that BTS's song weaves them into one. It is definitely a permanent song on my playlist. My favorite part is how the members harmonize at the end (Ari ari seurri seurri). Snatches my heart 😍 I'll never understand why there are kpop groups with so many members but so few harmonizing parts. . . A lesser known BTS song, but deserves a place in our hearts 💜
My go to Arirang rendition is Sohyang’s, but I did find out about it through BTS. Thanks for this video, it’s really helpful! I could deduce the emotions within the song just from the melody, but this more in depth analysis helps a lot.
Locals be saying we are so into korea that forgot our own country but for me it made me love my country even more because I admire BTS for loving their country...it depends on the fans how they interpret the song and apply to themselves Ofcourse I love korean culture too I'm curious of others too...I swear I wished I was into thier lyrics from the beginning:(
Honey, if anyone’s using anyone here it will be us using you to understand better what our boys are saying. Thank you again for explaining so thoroughly 💜🌈
That, along with BTS's version of the Arirang was a wonderful and simple explanation! I am a folk song and traditional and classic music lover, singer, and student. The Arirang has even influenced other cultures folk music around the world. It is a beautiful and touching history in music! Thanks for such a helpful simple explanation!!
I like that traditional way of singing. There's some charm to it. I've got goosebumps. 😊 I always liked the coexistence of tradition and modernity. And it's not only because of BTS that I'm interested in Korean history and culture. To be honest, I first started to be curious through historical kdramas xD
I am not korean, I'm asian But korean people must be proud of BTS, support them !!!! esp. haters and fans from other kpop artist fandom should accept their hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTS spreaded korean culture best way!!!!!!! So many many million people started to learn korean culture, history, life style, k-drama, and kpop!!!!! Many people traveled korea, visited because of BTS!!! Their all songs have deep meaning, about social problem, life about high school , youth, stress, depression, live goal, young age, love to yourself, social problem etc etc!!!!!!!!!!! esp. they produced all their songs!!!! also don't bash and insult BTS!!!!! They are one in billion!!!!!!!!!
Oh my good god that woman singing at 4:24-4:58 literally sent shivers down my spine and made me burst into tears. Gosh this song just conveys so many emotions its incredible. As always, thank you so much for explaining this in depth. I'd been wanting to understand some of the meaning behind Arirang ever since I found a video of BTS performing it in 2016, however all other explanations really fell short. Once again, you guys do such a fantastic job of laying out all the complexities and nuances in this explained series and I'm really truly grateful. Culture is such a wonderful, diverse, and incredible thing and I love getting these glimpses at the history and traditions of Korea. Thank you to you and BTS both!
I've only known BTS for a year so this is my first time understanding this song's meaning, thank you!! I admire how in love with their own culture they are! Adding parts from all provinces and then putting their own spin on it, anyone in Korea could relate to it I assume. Love those boys and love you guys!
Fun fact (not very fun), they teach Arirang to little Canadian kids in elementary school music class. We are all about the multiculturalism so they teach songs from different cultures (LOTS of Hebrew songs) and it's a good way to introduce that one scale, you know, the one you can play on only the black keys.
I've heard several of these variations of Arirang almost 8 years ago when we were playing Variations of a Korean Folk Song for concert festival for my high school band. I never had the chance to look into the lyrics, but it was one of my favorites from festival that we played and got us a high score for our orchestra. When I heard this version I tried to focus on the words and understand the deeper meaning of the song. So thank you guys for explaining it even more!
Sidenote becausee not BTS related, but can we acknowledge how amazing that one lady was, that was shown several times? Her voice and art of singing was really great. Another sidenote. My ARMY daughter just downloaded Arirang somewhere but did not know anything about the background. When we visited my parents together and were talking about how we both got into Kpop (or better BTSpop), we played some songs and Arirang came up. My mom who sings in a choir, where they sing songs from all over the world, said "I know this one, it's basically like a Korean anthem, the most popular song there". So my mom, who has no clue about South Korea otherwise taught us about Arirang.
Thank you so much, DKDKTV! Both of you work so hard to help intl fans understand BTS' messages! Their songs get even more special to us! I love today's "Explained by a Korean" so much. I'm always trying to get close to korean culture and when you say you're thankful to BTS 'cause they're spreading all of this rich culture of yours, I'd like to say that you guys are doing an amazing job promoting Korea as well!! Again, this channel gives me life! I love you two! Tons of purple love from Brazil!! PS. David, have you seen Taehyung's hair for MMA?? OMGG! That is power indeed!
I've always loved this song and I've never seen people give it any attention, so I'm really thankful you're "using" BTS to remind people this awesome song exists!
The lady singing Millyang Arirang stole my heart you guys. I love songs like this no matter what Asian Culture it is. Whew her voice and emotion. Anyways thank you 💜 you & BTS.
Arirang is my favorite korean folk song, if not my favorite folk song. Ever since I first heard So Hyang's version (which is my favorite version with BTS's being my 2nd fav -surprisingly-), I've loved this song.
Thank you, David, for explaining this so clearly. The example clips you used have me even more fascinated by Korean traditional culture and history. From the clips, I heard echos of Jimin's unique vocal style (or isn't it more the other way around?) and now I wonder how much traditional singing styles influenced him. Thanks so much for showing us what we don't even know we would want to learn! 💜💜
That's very very informative, thank you.🙏 I just appreciate BTS more of how they gives pride to S. Korea. They're truly a S.Korea's soft power. I love watching this again and again...💜💜💜💜
Great timing! I saw alot of ARMYs commenting on BTS Arirang as it recently came up that Koreans recently discovered this version and people had many questions. I'll be sure to refer them to your video! Thanks for doing this!
As a Korean American, this song wrenches my heart every single time I hear it. Nothing logical about it. It's so unbelievably beautiful and I can't properly verbalize it. FYI I cried through this entire video.
I have recently travelled with other army to South Korea and explored Busan, Daegu and Seoul. It was amazing seeing a little bit of the culture, hearing the language, blending in with locals and experiencing the vibe and atmosphere of the streets. The people were friendly and so welcoming. Even if they didn't understand much English they were all trying to help us out. I have fallen in love with all 3 cities and I cannot wait to come back and explore some more. Maybe learn the language also...I will try at least :)
U can’t just put a small part of satori rap there the audience want a full video explaining for that song please and thank u , and there’s something i have read before that this song can be interpreted as it’s for the division between N & S korea and how korean still feel the longing and the nostalgia towards their families there , the part when they said “Let’s meet let’s meet “ reminded me of that
I first heard about bts maybe around 2016. I might have been 10 and heard of it inspite not having a phone to use or being exposed to RUclips. Then around 2018 I slowly started following their music as my friends started loving it. As someone who is particular about not claiming to be a fan without decent knowledge over it, although I enjoyed the few works of theirs that I saw I didn't jump into calling myself army until I was fully content with my knowledge. Now am proudly an ARMY who can read hangul, can understand a decent amount of it without subtitles, can form short sentences, have discovered various korean traditional art forms, discovered more of kpop, seen sooo many well made k dramas and movies, seen a number of variety shows (not just bts related), know a basic amount of korean history, and so many more small small details. And although this is like a drop amongst the ocean of knowledge I have left to gain over everything related to Korea, I wouldn't even have had this drop of knowledge without BTS💜 And ofcourse dkdktv has had a huge role in making this learning journey much easier! Thankyou!💜💜💜💜💜
It was an acquaintance saying they watched some Korean shows on Netflix that led me to being a big fan of South Korea. I love the Kdramas and watching them has instilled a love for that country, their culture and traditions. Before this, I had no idea where it was in the world map and all I knew was they made televisions called Samsung! I have learned some basic (very basic) Korean words from watching Kdramas and learned quite a bit of history. (I could probably name most of the kings of the Joseon era from Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo) onwards.) Kdrama led me to the wonderful world of BTS who I love and think are marvellous! I am probably their oldest fan! I’m not just their fan, I’m a whole air-conditioner. Thank you boys for this video, I do so love listening to Arirang and you have given a deeper understanding for your national anthem which started life as a beautiful folk song. Regards from Australia.
It is so nice that you explained Arirang. Hope you keep this series going! Thanks for explaining the lyrics to people who don't understand korean and also giving us the knowledge of the social and cultural backround to see the songs in a larger picture. I think many people are keen to know more about korean culture and society and how it is represented in todays pop culture. I was at an Arirang festival myself when I was traveling Korea and didn't fully know what meaning it had, other than it just being a traditional form of music. So thanks for broadening my knowledge. Keep it up!
Yalls videos are so great and informative! Thanks to BTS, your channel, and learning a little about Korean culture at work from my Korean friend, my husband and I are visiting in March for two weeks! We are so excited to see, eat, and learn everything we can about South Korea!! Thank you guys for your awesome videos!
If it weren't for BTS I probably would never have informed myself more on the Korean culture. I used to be quite ignorant regarding eastern culture and wasn't in the least interested in it, everything just seemed too different to me. Suddenly BTS showed me this whole new different world, but hey, the different is beautiful and fascinating, and I caught myself thinking why the hell I hadn't read and seen more of eastern culture! I was really missing out on so much! I'll be forever thankful to BTS for removing the ignorance veil from my eyes and allowing me to see the world with different eyes. But I must also say that BTS' efforts wouldn't have such an effort if it weren't for people like David, Danny and other K-army who dedicated their time to explain the references, translate and educate us on Korean culture. So I really do think it's a great group effort between BTS and K-Army that's making Korea known to the world. Thank you, DKDKTV for this!
I would love to say thank you for this amazing video. It was the first one I've seen so far, but it was very informative and even gave me the in depth knowledge I wanted in a way that helped. I can't wait to see what other videos you have!!! Please keep doing what you do!!! 💜💜💜
Your explained series especially for BTS is seriously SO appreciated by the BTS ARMY. You have no idea how many times we have used them in threads or discussions. Thank you for being so positive about BTS and I hope you guys even get to interview them in the future!
After listening to your explanations of BTS songs I'm starting to wonder how much I've been missing not only in their older songs but other korean singers' songs.
Thank you so much guys for breaking down the lyrics & highly possible meanings of BTS's (and other Korean artists') songs for us, while also leaving room for interpretation. I only discovered their cover of this wonderful traditional folk song a while ago, so it's super meaningful to see this now. I'd also love to see more videos that deal with other aspects of Korean culture, traditions & history, if possible. I find your explanations pretty straightforward & detailed too. Thanks once again & keep going! 🔥💜
Honestly bless you for making this video, and all your videos explaining songs so foreigners like me can understand better. Through your videos, I've learned a lot that I didnt know before about Korea and it's gotten me genuinely interested. I take lessons twice a week to learn Korean so I can be ready when I finally get to visit and I have such an interest in the culture. Please keep making videos teaching us about it! I love them so much!
Thank you for the explanation. I actually love how BTS has taken to bring culture into the 21st century and to adapt it to modern times. As culture is ever evolving, integration and making it relatable to the new generation I feel is key to keeping it alive. It's great to learn about the roots but to add to it in your own fashion is what keeps it going. I hope you guys keep on using BTS to be honest, it's a very symbiotic relationship for us fans. There are youtubers who use BTS but don't actually provide anything in return (be it creativity, real emotions, or intelligent insights) but your videos really contribute to korean culture and the ARMY fandom in meaningful ways.
The fact that this makes me emotional as well as the comments really just shows how powerful bts are and to me, there's really no way I can compare them to any other groups seeing how much they've done for Korea and how big they are now is unfathomable
It was just recently that I saw that Arirang perf by BTS. The melody and Jin’s voice particularly caught my attention at the time -to me, it evoked such pride and happiness. I didn’t realize until your explanation vid that it was a Bangtan version of the song and that they re-wrote parts of the lyrics. Everyday, I find more and more reasons to be impressed by BTS. And great video as always, borahae ~ 😍😚💜💜
sakura heartfilia why did it take them so long to discover it in Korea?
감사해요..외랑둥이들에게 우리나라의 전통민요인 아리랑을 이해하는데 큰도움이 될거예요..
When i was younger i always wanted to learn the language but never attempted it,but since i became a fan of bts,i started learning korean and it made me want to learn more about the culture and hopefully one day i will be able to visit korea, also i feel proud how proud they are of their origin and how much they promote their country
BTS is genuinely genuis...I mean WOW,no boyband does this...at young age they are already legends...I love them even more.💜
I was in a Korean rock n roll band back in the late 60's called the Devils.
Locals be saying we are so into korea that forgot our own country but for me it made me love my country even more because I admire BTS for loving their country...it depends on the fans how they interpret the song and apply to themselves
Ofcourse I love korean culture too I'm curious of others too...I swear I wished I was into thier lyrics from the beginning:(
Jin's voice is perfect for this
Honey, if anyone’s using anyone here it will be us using you to understand better what our boys are saying.
@DKDKTV Thank you for your hard work. Really appreciate it a lot. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for explaining this. We, international armys, are really grateful to this information, making us appreciate it more. We purple you 💜
I am not korean, I'm asian
But korean people must be proud of BTS, support them !!!!
esp. haters and fans from other kpop artist fandom should accept their hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTS spreaded korean culture best way!!!!!!! So many many million people started to learn korean culture, history, life style, k-drama, and kpop!!!!!
Many people traveled korea, visited because of BTS!!!
Their all songs have deep meaning, about social problem, life about high school , youth, stress, depression,
live goal, young age, love to yourself, social problem etc etc!!!!!!!!!!! esp. they produced all their songs!!!!
also don't bash and insult BTS!!!!! They are one in billion!!!!!!!!!
90% of students in India who are learning Korean is because of BTS . BTS made me take interest in learning korean
Love those boys and love you guys!
bangtan arirang was the first bts song that I could sing from start to finish. It's still one of my favorites of all their songs
The BTS version of the song ARIRANG is just heart touching song ! The beginning of the music sounds like Bollywood music of India !!
I personally love BTS' rendition of Arirang, it sounded super upbeat and it makes you feel energized somehow
This video is how I discovered her, Song So Hee.
Jin's voice suits this song so perfectly. I love this version of the song, and how proud they are of their homeland
BTS is an Idol who will promote his own country through their music💜 And i'm proud of them💜
I fell in love with this song when I saw BTS performing it...still love it...
Her name is Song so hee
Back again with great a video
I love how the traditional versions are mostly by Song So Hee.
Bts is now teaching me Korean culture
Arirang is my favorite korean folk song, if not my favorite folk song. Ever since I first heard So Hyang's version (which is my favorite version with BTS's being my 2nd fav -surprisingly-), I've loved this song.
Thank you, David, for explaining this so clearly. The example clips you used have me even more fascinated by Korean traditional culture and history. From the clips, I heard echos of Jimin's unique vocal style (or isn't it more the other way around?) and now I wonder how much traditional singing styles influenced him. Thanks so much for showing us what we don't even know we would want to learn! 💜💜
Jin’s voice is perfect here!
That's very very informative, thank you.🙏 I just appreciate BTS more of how they gives pride to S. Korea. They're truly a S.Korea's soft power. I love watching this again and again...💜💜💜💜
arirang is beautiful . i like all versions and i love bts version. thanks for the explanation
Thank you for making these series. I learned a lot.
*Learn Korean culture by BTS ft.DKDKTV*
Lollolol
This was great! Thank you so much!
이 영상 잘 민들어서 좋아요 bangtan always make me proud as a korean
And although this is like a drop amongst the ocean of knowledge I have left to gain over everything related to Korea, I wouldn't even have had this drop of knowledge without BTS💜
And ofcourse dkdktv has had a huge role in making this learning journey much easier!
(I could probably name most of the kings of the Joseon era from Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo) onwards.)
Kdrama led me to the wonderful world of BTS who I love and think are marvellous! I am probably their oldest fan! I’m not just their fan, I’m a whole air-conditioner. Thank you boys for this video, I do so love listening to Arirang and you have given a deeper understanding for your national anthem which started life as a beautiful folk song.
Regards from Australia.
I love their version so much and Jin’s voice sounds so amazing
It is so nice that you explained Arirang. Hope you keep this series going! Thanks for explaining the lyrics to people who don't understand korean and also giving us the knowledge of the social and cultural backround to see the songs in a larger picture. I think many people are keen to know more about korean culture and society and how it is represented in todays pop culture. I was at an Arirang festival myself when I was traveling Korea and didn't fully know what meaning it had, other than it just being a traditional form of music. So thanks for broadening my knowledge. Keep it up!
Thanks for including videos of people singing the original versions, it was new, different and I loved it!
BTS' music is so rich and full of meanings, I love them so much, and I LOVED this video, you guys are doing a great job with this serie ;)
I didn’t know you guys knew that BTS covered this song! Thank you so much for making this explained video!
I am just hooked up on this song lately... thanks!!!!
Same!
thank you so much for the explanations! I learn a lot from this video!
I’m not even Korean but I’m so proud of BTS. I can’t imagine how proud Koreans people are. BTS definitely Korea’s national treasure
Thank you so much! I love this series! 💜💜💜
And antis say BTS is westernised and have forgotten their culture
Thanks for such a good explaination
I thank DKDKTV for helping understand their lyrics better. You guys are the real deal
Thank you for all this information and I'm so proud 💜
#BTS #BTSARMY 4EVER
The fact that this makes me emotional as well as the comments really just shows how powerful bts are and to me, there's really no way I can compare them to any other groups seeing how much they've done for Korea and how big they are now is unfathomable
It was just recently that I saw that Arirang perf by BTS. The melody and Jin’s voice particularly caught my attention at the time -to me, it evoked such pride and happiness. I didn’t realize until your explanation vid that it was a Bangtan version of the song and that they re-wrote parts of the lyrics. Everyday, I find more and more reasons to be impressed by BTS. Thank you for this vid. 😊💜
thank u DKDKTV
for your efforts on making this
🙌💜💜💜I know its selfish from me to say this but it would be lovely if can also explain bts satoori rap, I have been listening to it for years but I still can't get the translation
I fell in love with Jins Voice
