Top 5 Digital Art Mistakes (That We Keep Making!)

- 🌸 My debut book NIMA is out now: rossdraws.com/nima
Hey everyone! After SO much Nima content (which i love btw), it felt right to get back to basics and make an instructional art video. I normally like to focus on the positives, but it was finally time to address some of these common mistakes. There's a ton of content out there discussing "top" mistakes, but these five personally apply to me. I'll be honest, sometimes it pains me to reach deep into the vault and pull out some of these early pieces to prove a point, but if you all can learn from my mistakes then it's definitely worth it. Hopefully I can give you a different perspective and help you address your own top mistakes. Whatever you do, keep making art!

What's your biggest art mistake so far?? ✍🏻
Thanks for ALLLLLLL the love lately! It's been a crazy summer with the release of my book and my 2020 is looking better all thanks to you guys ❤️
Also! I'll be livestreaming on twitch/lightbox tomorrow at 2pm pst
www.twitch.tv/rossdraws
One of my biggest mistakes was composition (rule of thirds, direction, focus etc.), all of my illustrations back then are disorganized and don't have anything significant within the piece. I might even be doing the same mistake now but at least I notice I'm improving on it 👌
i did all things by airbrush TT, and I was drawing by mouse - not pen
one of my top mistakes was not discovering this channel earlier.
Trying to avoid humans, i love your videos and my friend bought your book and i already read it 2 times
I forget to draw the forehead. LOL
When he talks about Nima his face is so radiant like a ray of sunshine
Like real-life color dodge...

7:02 Liquify Tool
7:38 Face Aware Liquify
8:08 Magic Wand

Thanks a lot! :D
AaaYghggGhg thank you!
Haha No problem!!
i think ppl make that shading mistake because they usually go for colder less saturated shadow, which makes them look dull, try experimenting with different values
Thank you
My biggest mistake is I already know all of this but still manage to forget while drawing
ಥ_ಥ
A_Neko _C yo, that s painfully true.
Easier said than done eh😭😭😭
I made a checklist I pull up during my paintings, it helps to keep map out all the different attributes and eventually becomes second nature.
@@razor191919 woah, that's smart
Imagine having add and trying to comprehend all these informations
by the way, color dodge on Paint tool Sai is basically Luminosity or Lumi and Shade :)
And color dodge on Clip Studio Paint is called “Glow dodge.” There is an effect called “color dodge” but it doesn’t have the same features as Ross’. Glow dodge is more accurate.
@@catcactus1234 How about Add(Glow)?
Thank you kind stranger!
And color dodge on medibang paint is "dodge"
@@catcactus1234 is there a liquify on Clip Studio?
" I try to focus on painting small"
*has giant drawing tablet*
LOL
He meant canvas size, but lol
Oh wait I just realized that was a tablet lol. I thought it was some kind of computer
@@reallybad7062 Nope. He meant to sketch the thing zoomed out.
Leongon draws stuff What? That's different tho, because what he meant by painting small.. is trying to do the bigger picture first before doing highly detailed ones
The worst mistake is thinking you don't make them.
OMG I'm a top comment \o/
Omg this is so helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Much agreed my friend 💜👌🏾
Damn
True
You only spoke truth.
I STILL get caught up in the details. Especially when I'm working on line art. I really need to learn how to prioritize details. Not EVERYTHING needs to be in focus. I know that & yet l can't seem to help going into 1000% zoom mode...lol
I don't think it's a bad thing at all!! You shouldn't forget about the whole picture, but I really like those arts with little tiny details, they make the art much more interesting and deep!
I think my biggest mistake is the lack of foundation; I find it so hard to find references for the stuff I wanna draw, even when I know a lot of sites with this kind of stuff, even with a bunch of anatomy PDFs so I can study better... it's really hard for me to put it all together to draw lmao
Agreed
Pinterest is a good place to search for references,if you want to study anatomy study one part at a time dont go full blast body...once you understand each part you can figure out how they connect to each other,i recommend watch Proko in youtube
I recommend 3 things for you: One is taking your own photo references (Of yourself or someone helping you, so you have exactly the position you want), second is buying a figurine that you can pose to grab references (the usual ones for art are those made of wood, very simple shapes, I don't really like them but you can try). Third advice I can give you is getting a program like poser for example, that let's you position a character in a 3d space the way you want, and use that as a reference. Hope these 3 advices help you :P
Don't be afraid to franken-reference my dude, if you find something that looks kinda like what you want, and then something else that has a different aspect, photoshop them together. Especially useful for fantasy creatures, but just be mindful of the angles ^-^
thanks everyone for the tips! It's very helpful, now my challenge will be to actually study and learn from all these references :'3
hey Ross! I'd really like a video on "final effects", you know those last few hours of rendering you don't show on the videos, they really bring simple characters to life and perfectly matches with the background. Thank you!
I think he posted on his patreon.
For the people who think they don't have that liquefied tool thingy.
You have Mesh transform it's kinda the same
It gets blurrier every time I use it 😓
@@Noodelousart123 Work in a bigger canvas if your system can handle it.
@@Leongon gotcha, thx
@@Leongon It always creates some blur though, doesn't it? I sometimes use it but usually have to repaint a bit
@@scarlet8078 If you work in a bigger canvas, in pixels, you have more information for the warp to work with, leaving less blur behind after the operation. It's good to work in as big resolution as your system can handle for this kind of cases, you just work more zoomed out.
When you make all the mistakes he points out 😐😐.....
Just means you have opportunities to improve as an artist!!!
Lucky your mistakes pointed out, so you can fix them all
I hahe such horrific memories of the burn tool X,D
Hi!
I stopped drawing over 2 months, and I tried something today; I was like wth, how did I do this.
Nah your critical eye is not developed yet, don't get too confident kid.
That happens sometimes, just because you're not drawing doesn't mean you're not still absorbing more information ^-^
But in the long run it helps to practice more consistently, so you can actually figure out what is the thing that you're doing better rather than just by a fluke
I sometimes dont draw for a while and then when i do its like my real artistic skills come out of hiding and i draw the best thing ive ever drawn. Its wack.
@@CristalPeace I recommend you read the book "drawing on the right side of the brain" by Betty Edwards, I think that'll help explain it! Basically, the more you think about drawing, the more your brain interferes, so you tend to do better when you're not actively trying to do a good job ^-^
@FinikiFinFuzz Yeah, but have you been studying nonstop for a few months? Drawing the same mistakes over and over isn't nearly as useful as drawing a lot of life drawings and study stuff
my biggest regret and mistake, is that ive been drawing for 3 years so far, but in the first 2 years i drew like once a week and barely even practiced which made my art improve REALLLYYY slowly
And i wondered why my art wasnt good enough..well no wonder why. it wasnt until a year ago i started to do a few practice sketches a day and try to experiment with styles and poses, honestly i improved way more than before (Not to mention, i used to only draw headshots 3/4 for 2 fuckin years). A thing im tryna improve on right now is making my composition cool with cool angles, a really good tip i can give is basically you dont have to show everything in the picture just cuz you drew it, some parts can be taken out to show the focal point, even if it means cropping some parts out. Good luck everyone!!
I feel that 😭😭 I was born with zero talent when it comes to art. When I started drawing (I was around 11/12 years old) I only drew chibis and straight on faces with zero variation. I still enjoyed it sooo much that I kept drawing these things for like 3 years and that was the point when I finally switched to realism and stuff and sadly I realised I didnt learn a lot till then. 3 years wasted :)))) Afterwards I had too much going on with school so I was focusing on the right things, but I barely spend time actually drawing, so another couple years wasted.. But half a year ago I finally understood that I wanna become an artist, no matter what and now Im paying as much attention to my art as possible :) Better late than never!
Headshots are actually more important than some people think 😂
I listened to all those who said we need to work on anatomy, lights and that stuff, and realised that I actually don't know how to draw eyes and hair 😅 Now I still have a problem with hair and eyelashes, but it's getting better
@@astra8372 im glad you are improving, keep up the good work! :)
Um, I hated using blending, I still suck, Ross is god.
Yey. I like your art so much. I'm a biginner digital artist, and I learned a lot with your videos. It inspires me. Love it❤
Agreed
I love this vid so much!!!! 👏🥺I would also say lighting is a major part in art. It could literally make or break a piece. ❤️
EDIT: *And not using REFERENCES IS BAD!!!!!* You are sabotaging yourself by not giving yourself the opportunity to find what you like in another piece and implementing it into your own art so you can grow faster.
I've been using liquify for like 10 years and never looked to the right panel 🤦♂️
Years of academy training wasted
What do you mean by panel? I think I'm still not doing it right, so I would be very happy to understand what you mean by that. :)
@@lalartworks I've always only liquified everything manually, with the tools on the left. I've never looked at the features on the right until now. Maybe it's also only in newer versions of PS.
Thank you :)
Ayy just when i was struggling with my digital art
I really like how you've organized clear, simple and powerful problems everyone seems to run into. You're on the spot with your content for a community hungry to grow with their painting skills.
Yay! Thank you for the tips! I really need this so much! Your amazing! I'm so happy to get your book! ❤ I'm so excited for Nima merch!
Regardless, I still can’t help but want the expensive tools 🙄 lol
you just need good quality! it is t always expensive :D
A common mistake I see digital artists make is treating every part of an outfit or hair as a separate picture with no relation to each other - this or that isn't casting any shadows or reflections on the items around it, everything has a different color palette with different tones in the shadows and highlights... then it looks like a paper doll made from newspaper cutouts, not a unified image, yannow?
My own most common mistake is wildly over- or under-estimating how big my canvas needs to be. I end up with a ton of marginal space with nothing in it, or a resolution so small I find out too late I can't edit any details anymore.
OMG I MADE ALL OF THESE MISTAKES BUT NOW I KNOW WHAT TO DO! THIS WAS SO HELPFUL! TYSM ROSS NOW I CAN SEE MY ART HAS IMPROVED A TON!! TYSM TYSM TYSM TYSMMMMM BLESS THISSS MANNNN
Bruh this is basic stuff.
@@KershalJC That's not the point. They learned something new to maybe help improve their art. You might've known these things, but that doesn't mean its 'basic' knowledge.
@@KershalJC not everyone is at your level. Some people are below levels and some people are at higher levels than yours. This stuff is definitely not basic stuff for self-taught artist and for artist who don't draw digitally as much
I’ve already been taught a few of these including making sure not to zoom in on your work on my current university course, but a lot of the others are still very useful, especially in terms of applicable techniques in photoshop.
Listening to @Rossdraws made me go back and sit my ass on the chair and start studying to have a better basis, because that's what keeps me from improving my art. Thank you for lighting my mind.
You are one of the very few artists that I like. Your art is very unique and I think your digital art tips are very helpful. Thank you.
The advice with using more saturated colors for the shadows just blew my mind. For now I tried it in traditional art and thanks to that, I made my best paining so far! Thank you very much for this video, you're doing great job, Ross! 🥰🥰
You evolution is a inspiration for me! All videos have a edition so cool
MY BIGGEST ART MISTAKE WAS AVOIDING ASKING FOR ADVICE FROM PEOPLE THAT *ARENT* ARTISTS. THEY MIGHT NOT DRAW WELL BUT THEY CAN SEE THE MISTAKES THAT YOUR MAKING AND GIVE GREAT ADVICE. ASK YOUR FRIENDS FOR HELP KIDS
Jaimmmee Jooonnneees. Such a king. I'm waiting for his next art drop online. Great tips, Ross! Keep up the excellent work. I remember finding the fundamentals through Andrew Loomis and how I grew 3x that year than I had in the previous 5 years. Gotta hit the basics hardcore.
I mean I feel like “ dull shadows” are preference and not a mistake . They can drive an emotion that can’t be seen with saturated tones
Rren Dre I was just thinking this! That painting he showed (girl with the hat) looked just as good before as it did after - the two versions just gave a different feel and it’s a matter of what effect you’re going for that determines how saturated the shadows should be.
However I do think that advice is for beginners only cause they might mistakenly?? Use really dull shadows due to not having so much knowledge on shading/lighting etc.
Your channel has helped me so so much in my digital art journey! Crazy thankful for people like you!
Thanks, those were some mistakes I was trying to correct on my own and you really cleared me up Ross! But I didn't know about the "liquify" tool, this is totally going to save my future art✨✨💕💕
You're so energetic and optimistic in these videos, it's great! Thanks for sharing your experience
I just love the way Ross colors his art. The colors are so bright and interesting!
I want to become an illustrator when I am older so your videos are really helping me a lot! I still have to learn so much, but I hope that one day I will be able to create amazing art like you do. Thank you so much for inspiring me and many others! ❤
I’ve been binge watching art tips and tutorials lately but this one really stuck out from the rest. I just kept going “ohhh!” This is just everything I needed. I have so much to practice.
Thank you so much for making videos like this!
Your early ones were fun and lively, but very hard to actually learn from. Please teach us more when you can ^^ !
Thank you so much for sharing these tips!!! I cant wait to apply them to my work!
I am digital artist for around eleven years now, started to work recently on concept art portfolio and i have to say your videos make me feel more confident in my art, want to try more new things and so. Thank you very much ☺️
Damn I Missed those Videos so much 😍 I really appreciate how much work you put into them and how reflective and honest you are about your old work! This really motivates me and keeps me pushing my Art every day! You always remind me of Not using too many brushes as soon as I get into rendering and it definetly pays of in the end! Keep up the amazing work 😄
At 4:42, I understood what you meant by focusing too hard on the details and not looking at the bigger picture. However, it can be exciting to find something new every time you revisit a painting. Kind of like how reading can be an adventure, you can also "explore" in an art piece like it's its own lil world. Love your work bro.
These are very helpful. Thank you so much for having this video Ross!!!
I really had soooo many brushes, now I use 6, and just sometimes I go after something more specific. Love the video 😊

Also Ross: *Uses Photoshop
You can get PS for free easily :/
You can get a vpn to get ps for free
Why don't you guys also suggest shoplifting a display tablet?
@@Leongon wow, nice idea mate! 😂😂
Leongon draws stuff Funny comparison, but stealing physical items is not the same as duplicating a program’s license from an infinite supply. Adobe is outrageously expensive and has a near monopoly on the art industry. They also have terrible anti-consumer practices, mainly when they turned all their software into subscription-based services upwards of $1,000 a year just to milk corporations. Adobe is the only company I’m morally acceptable with pirating, as should everyone else.
This was being awaited thank you Ross!
one of the helpful top art mistakes videos!! finally. you dont seem like you're talking down to people when mentioning the mistakes, and you dont just talk about pet peeves, but mistakes that you yourself have made!! thank you.

This was a huge help! Thanks Ross! 💫❤️
This is such a great tips! Thank you so much!

I love color dodge too! 😍❤️❤️
The 2nd advice is soooo true!
Back when I was a student, my art teacher always told me to not lean in too close when drawing, and to always try to stand up and step back for a moment from time to time, so that I can see the drawing as a ''one big picture'', and not just focusing on a particular part of the drawing. Because only when you do that can you see if your drawing looks weird or not.
I have been forgetting that too, so thank you for the reminder!
And btw, yes, color dodge is love 💕💕
Ahhhh I can't wait for the new merch!!!
a lot of these mistakes i already know but this vid still was really helpful, seeing that you also made a lot of mistakes and are not some kind of god above all others with your stunning artworks. I'm already studying the fundamentals everyday now since about 4 months but i fear i'll just never be able to get a job as a concept artist or get accepted in to any art school after graduating high-school. Thanks for reminding me that also the best of artist also started out making tons and tons of mistakes, having bad anatomy and being bad at shading and digital painting. Thanks a lot Ross!

I have never heard of underpainting! But it makes so much sense, thank you!
My BIGGEST art mistake, was probably thinking I could never do good lineart. So what did I do to fix this? I used the circle tool for every. single. line. For any line, I just resized the tool and then traced the line. It took SO long and I absolutely KNEW that it wasn’t going to work, but I did it anyway.
Great tips! You always give me inspiration

You're just so amazing man! I always have the biggest smile on my face while watching your videos and the biggest feeling of inspiration after. I hope I get to meet you someday so I can thank you. :))))
Such a cool way to show the improvement. Loved it.
Hey Ross! You're my favourite artist and I've always wondered how you get your sketches to a finished piece. I can't seem to wrap my head on how to make such a clean digital painting from a rough sketch like you do.
I'm so used to using linearts/inking with very clean hard shading and I kinda want to break that kind of habit.
