I'm 58 years old and I have no idea WTF people mean by "real woman". I've been told that I'm not a real woman because I never had kids, even though I did menstrate for years before menopause. Judgemental types can always change the goalposts for realness to only include them and exlude anyone different than them. Realness is so over-rated.
It's preposterous! Grew up with everyone around me telling me that I wasn't really a woman, 'Because you're too active. Because you think too much. Because you're too tall. Because you're too dark. Because you ask too many questions. Because you read too much. Because you won't accept abuse in exchange for the attention of a man. Because you get too angry when someone abuses others.' And on and on and on. Yet, I've always been a woman. I am MY kind of woman, authentically. Same way they can't tell me I'm 'womaning' wrong, they can't and shouldn't tell trans folk shit! Trans folk know who the fuck they are!! 'Realness' is gatekeeping nonsense from people who have no clue how to be a Self.

I'm a middle aged cis-woman and I've been told I'm not a real woman because: -I didn't have kids -I never got married and I never will -I'm asexual -I'm aromantic -I have hobbies that are "male interests" (video games, comic books, stuff like that) -I don't wear make up -I don't wear perfume -I don't care about fashion trends -I don't care about home-making -I have no interest in looking good for men -I don't like romance movies, I prefer action and fantasy -I'm too 'aggressive' -I don't have enough stereotypical female interests -I have no maternal instinct -I'm not submissive -I had permanent sterilization with zero regrets I have an ex who to this day insists I'm a trans man because he has decided my interests and lack of being "a beautiful feminine flower" mean that I must be a man inside. It's ridiculous how gatekeepy the term "real woman" is even for cis women let alone trans ones. No one can win because they keep moving the goal posts.

I saw a post on Tumblr that was like, "We were able to get the community to boycott orange juice in the 70s because of Anita Bryant, but now we can't get the gays to stop eating at Chick-Fil-A." Otherwise progressive people purchasing HL gives me that same energy. There's a conversation to be had about the efficacy of boycotts-especially these days-but I think the point still stands.
I grew up intersex with queer parents in the mid seventies (in a terrible conservative place), have been out as trans for almost 25 years. I can say that this is the scariest the world has ever felt. Love to everybody

as a trans person who grew up in tennessee, it was amazing to watch people go from ignorant, but mostly kind, to opinionated and cruel. i used to be able to talk about my transness with strangers and mostly be heard- not always understood or received, but almost never written off entirely. now i mostly stay on the dl after being out for 11 years. i don’t trust people to listen anymore. even people i consider acquaintances don’t know who i really am. i’ve been talked over, harassed, and assaulted this year more than any other. i thought i felt helpless when i came out at 14, but i had no idea how bad it could get.
The past year or two have been some of the hardest for me and my identity. In the past it was relatively peaceful around the topic of being a trans person but recently I have seen some of the most disgusting things being said online and in general life and society which I have had an unbelievably difficult time handling. I still to this day cannot understand where such hatred comes from towards us who have absolutely no affect on other people’s lives, who are just trying to cope with how hard we already have it, without the added hatred from those we don’t even know that judge us for the sole reason that we’re different. I’m struggling with the vision of my future, as I’m scared I’ll never be able to live as I want. I’m still hiding from everyone I know but I’m hoping one day things will get better and us as people who deserve respect will be able to live without these worries.

Its interesting, because I’m black and a trans male and hearing about the vitriol espoused by the cpac just made me… so tired. My brain is just on “yep just another day, at least they’ll kill me for being black. Somehow my identity will be protected by my blackness.” Like, if I retreat into the closet and remain a “black woman” I’m already masculinized, deprived of femininity in a way, convenient to me. If I come out and proud as a trans male, I may not be deprived socially because most social consequences of existing will hit my blackness. Antiblackness is gender neutral and white transphobes will fall for anti-blackness before they reach for transphobia because both are so deeply intertwined.

There is still so much fucking shame surrounding being intersex and it needs to be discussed more often. My daughter in law is quite willing to talk about being trans, but if you ask her about being intersex she will just shut down.

wow, another great video Ro. I’m a 14-year-old closeted trans girl and I cried watching this. Recently, I was getting carpooled by my friend with another friend who rides home with him. At one point the second friend I mentioned said that he was getting Hogwarts legacy and then he talked about how people are getting “canceled” for playing it. And the other friend’s dad who was driving didn’t know why so he asked. I was eager to tell him “Jk Rowling” and so were my friends. But we had different motivations. Everyone in the car gave an eye roll at Jk Rowling being transphobic. They said it shouldn’t matter what they do with their money. And I agreed at the time. It felt wrong hearing them brush off how bad Jk Rowling is. She is someone who has harmed me and people like me immeasurably. Yet, they didn’t care. But I care. I wish I could just tell them they’re supporting a horrible person, but I would never be able to. I started questioning my gender more than a year ago. Since that time, I’ve had constant dread and I’ve been constantly depressed. I switched schools recently and the people there are about every -phobic and -ist you can think of. It seems like every time I get close to coming out, I see more news about anti-trans bills. I’m too scared to talk to my therapist about how trans issues are affecting me or how dysphoria is because I’m not out. Like a lot of trans people, I felt hopeless hearing politicians basically advocate for my death. And it's gotten worse hearing about the anti-trans bills being passed in my state. I’ve heard so many anti-trans people, I even had a teacher say transphobic things when we were talking and he did it TWICE. All of this hate has scared me into not coming out. I’m even writing this from a secret account. And... it’s also made me side with people who really don’t care about trans people. I’ve been taking the bare minimum and ignoring how uncomfortable some of the actions people do and some of the words they say make me feel. I shouldn’t have to be out for them to stop saying slurs, I shouldn’t have to be out for them to stop making fun of trans people, and I shouldn’t have to be out for them to at least listen to trans people telling them not to play the game. You can’t be neutral about trans people when we are literally dying and getting denied medical care. So moving forward, I’m gonna call people out when they’re deserving and I’m not gonna be friends with people who don’t care about me. I’m also not gonna let people scare me into hiding. “They are not stupid.” As a queer black female presenting non binary human this has been my main point in arguing against bigots. It works for specifically for a member of a marginalized group hating another marginalized group. Because all marginalized people know what it’s like to be misunderstood and doubted.
I agree ,I really hate the word "stupid"and find it ableist I dislike calling people who deliberately expresses bigotry and harm to marginalized groups as ignorant or unaware of what their doing , they know the harm they are doing especially in this period in time it would be foolish to call someone ignorant when their deliberately causing harm.

There's actually a card in Yugioh that has basically been nicknamed "the white woman" so there's a lot of jokes about how she's used. One of them is openly mocking her as the "white woman savior" because of her effects. In the digital version she has an animation and when used it's called a "white woman jump scare" and it amuses me.

Recently, Arkansas passed a law to limit trans children's access to life-saving hormones... and then passed a law to remove protections for children against workplace mistreatment and excessive work hours. They do not care about the children.
I think the biggest thing I learned throughout all of the Hogwarts Legacy discourse over the past few months is that a lot of folks on the left see trans people as a concept. Like, they understand trans people exist and proudly will say to support trans rights because of course you should support the rights of someone just trying to be themselves!, but there is a separation. They might watch some trans creators or follow a few on socials, but they don't really know any trans people. They don't have trans friends, they don't spend time on a regular basis around trans people, and they don't think about trans issues when they aren't looking at discourse about them. To them, trans people are just out there doing their own thing, but that thing is far away from them. Unconnected. As you said in the video, if someone is a piece of shit to your friend, you wouldn't turnaround and then support that person, and that is how everyone who considers themself an ally should be treating this. To too many though, when looking at Hogwarts Legacy and the request from many trans people to not play it, they don't think of an actual trans person; they instead relate it to the concept of transness, and when there is this separation, they don't feel any sort of stakes, any sort of emotional tie, and I think because of that, it makes it easier for them to justify to themselves why buying the wizard game isn't that bad because she's already a billionaire! and it can be used as a way to raise money for a trans charity! and this one trans person on twitter said that the game is great! and whatever else helps them feel less bad about doing something that they know people will judge them for--that they hopefully know is shitty. I can't help but think that if more people actually had trans friends, they wouldn't think twice about buying the game simply because that'd be a shitty thing to do to a friend. And yeah, obviously trans people are not a monolith so I am sure there are exceptions, but given that the vast majority of the trans community has expressed discomfort with the idea of people playing the game, I'd imagine those exceptions are few and far between. To be honest, even though seeing the trans people I know express discomfort with playing the game made my decision to not play it a no brainer, I don't think it should take having a personal stake in the trans community to support it in this way, but that does seem to be the case for many people and that is beyond frustrating, especially when they never take any active steps to get to know a trans person. I really hope people stop treating trans folk as a concept and start actually treating them like humans. Anyway, wonderful video that I know must have been hard to make for about a billion different reasons. Also, thank you for continuing to spread the good word of Outer Wilds and why most open-world games suck.
I saw some trans ppl being okay with ppl playing the game, some not etc. So who should we listen to? Sadly I don't have any real life trans friends since it's dangerous for trans ppl here to even express themselves. But my opinion (probably doesn't matter) is that the discourse in the end was a bit more harmful overall. It seems like it only generated more clicks for the game etc. (And assholes buying the game just to spite trans ppl). I do wonder if there was something better we could've done
@@rG1vZ I can only go off of my anecdotal experience which obviously is not perfect, but I have only seen some trans people be okay with people playing the game whereas I have seen A LOT of trans people being uncomfortable with it. I can’t make your choices for you or tell you what to value, but I do not think the trans community is split down the middle on this. They are heavily leaning to the side of being uncomfortable with the game, and I think that is important to take into account. As for if the discourse was helpful or harmful, obviously the response to many trans people expressing their uneasiness and frustration about people playing the game has been bad, but I don’t think that means that they shouldn’t have voiced their opinion by just staying quiet so people could play the wizard game guilt free. Doing the right thing goes wrong sometimes.

(this is going somewhere, it’s not meant passive aggressively, i promise) sometimes it helps imagining how you would feel in a situation like this. i‘m not trans either but i am a lesbian so how would i feel about giving money to a company and/or a person who believes that i shouldn’t express my sexuality in harmless ways in public (i.e. holding hands with a girl or giving her a forehead kiss)? and that makes the question really easy to answer. for me it already was an easy no because i have many trans friends (it just happened that my gay friend group is also the trans friend group) and even though none of them were ever particularly into harry potter and therefore didn’t care all that much it would make me feel like a terrible friend and a hypocrite. i still think that everyone needs to arrive at their own conclusion. you should definitely factor in trans voices because they do know more about their own community than you do as an outsider. at the end of the day the trans™️ aren’t an organized force that will burn people at the stake for playing a video game. it won’t turn anyone’s financial situation on the harry potter side of things around because they’re already billionaires and therefore deserve to be eaten. if you very desperately want to play the game, consider doing it with a parrot on your shoulder why you slam the hook you replaced your hand with into the keyboard.
I might not get the point here. Trans people are angry that people buy hogwarts legacy due to rowling, the creator of the wizarding world, giving disgusting statements about them. So buying hogwarts legacy leads to supporting rowling. To me that's not a fair argument. By that logic everyone who possesses a IPhone is supportive towards the chinese government. As far as I know Rowling was barely involved in this game. Many people gave their best to fulfill the dreams of millions of harry potter fans. It's not fair towards them to tell others to not buy the game.

i really liked the her “neopronouns from different languages and cultures” example, never thought of it that way, but my first language pronouns definitely feel more validating than english ones. and one of the languages common in my area comes from turkic group, so they only use Ул (ul or ool) instead of she/he/it, and i can 100% see how they can prefer it to english ones. anyways, i’ll rather have weird pronouns than d3ad kids you know?

I was interested to hear Ro's discussion on the neopronouns. I don't think I've ever come across someone who uses them, but I have noticed that they are picked up by a lot of people talking about trans issues. Like I have seen people who say they are fine respecting trans women wanting to be called "she" or trans men wanting to be called "he" but they have a problem with "they" even (which isn't even a neo pronoun, in my view - because I've seen plenty of people who use "they"!) or they go "hu, huh ,huh - but using a made up word like "ze" or "ve" is just stupid". I think the people harping on that like it's the biggest problem they have with respecting people's pronouns probably haven't got as far as the ones like "cat" and "fae".

I was roughly harry's age when I read both the first and last books of the series and I was poor/in foster care so it resonated with me in ways I find it hard to describe as an adult. That being said I dropped off with all of joannes content years ago. I'm here, I'm on your team, and I'm doing my best to listen and learn. Solidarity.

@@buzzardproductions593 I do that also. I'm not asking for a medal, I'm voicing my support. I read the books roughly 15-21 years ago depending on which book we're talking about and because of that whole child poverty thing I didn't actually get to keep them so it's not like I threw them out in protest of her views. I don't have a platform of any kind beyond my personal voice so I do my best to learn directly from trans people about the issues that affect them and direct people to learn from trans people as well. I try to convey what I learn to people when topics come up and remind others that trans people are people and idle opinions on their health and personal lives is something they wouldn't tolerate others doing to them. I try to show people that large platforms voicing hate have direct consequences on the harm and violence experienced by the trans community and in the case of Joanne specifically that support for her works is seen by her as direct support for her ideals. Expressing solidarity is inherently performative. I can't actually be an ally unless I perform being an ally. I'm not looking for recognition, but to show others that there is support from people outside the trans community. Ro specifically mentioned that the channel doesn't reach many people in my demographic which is why I made a point of mentioning anything in the first place. I understand if you don't trust or believe me, or feel that I'm not doing enough. The more I learn the more I see how cis people continue to fail to be allies. It's entirely reasonable to believe that I'll fail you to. I'm just doing my best not to.

No one is denying that trans women are of the male sex or trans men are of the female sex (obviously, otherwise they wouldn't identify as trans). As for what "woman gender" and "man gender" (and other genders) are, they are a mix of social interactions, external perception, and internal identity. Much like religious or political identity, genuine self identification under a label is the main thing that makes a person that thing. How they are perceived and their social interactions may reflect stereotypes of that label or not, what makes perception and interaction part of gender is mainly because of how we often use it to denote those stereotypes.

In the 90s I lost the love of my life because of transphobia. Rowling and everything attached to her poisonous legacy can rot. Are there any specific considerations in person to person interactions that allies could take to make your life even a little bit easier? Like, I know in my own life, sometimes the smallest considerations can make the game changing difference in how my day goes. The places that have free tampons in the bathroom, the person who doesn't assume my gender/race/sexuality, the free snacks in the lobby that keep me from passing out. If there are any of these micro changes you could think of that might help me learn to help trans people be more comfortable in spaces I have agency in, I would like to learn. My family and I live in ohio, and we all are on hrt and live out as trans. My health insurance tried to take away the testosterone ive been taking for over a decade. I had to prove i was "mentally capable of consenting" to treatment. Even back when i first started my medical transition, when i had to skirt aroubd my therapist at the time who refused to write me a recommendation letter for hrt so i had to go to the local lgbt clinic, get misgendered by the doctor and lie my ass off about how stereotypically masculine i am and i like ONLY women, deal with the doctors very uncomfortable comments on my race (im black and mixed) (in reality im very gnc and queer and love all genders) and then pay OUT OF POCKET for my hormones (and eventually get a discount with goodrx) bc insurance refuses to cover any trans healthcare back then... Even with all that. I never once had to prove i was psychologically competent enough to consent to my own medical care. That i wasnt being "influenced". I'm 30 goddamn years old. Ive had top surgery. I know whati want, ive known since i was 16. But now we have to consider fleeing our state for real. We're poor, disabled, and we might have no choice but to flee. So many trans people in just my city have been talking about where to go, how to train each other in self defense, have plans to escape. And some streamers cant even not spend money for a mediocre video game. Damn. That must be so hard for you.

I am a white nonbinary and queer person, so while I cannot directly understand what it’s like to experience racism, I’ve noticed that a lot of similar tactics are used by bigots to target POC and queer people.

hilarious and insightful as always. recently, a coworker apologized to me for using the wrong pronouns. i immediately brush it off, because that's what we do. "no worries, im used to it. i hear it all the time, pretty much every day," i told him. this is true and i try not to take it personally for obvious reasons. "i know, but i'm better than that," he said, and i believe him. he seems like a really nice dude. i feel like there's a lot one could unpack in this scenario, this simple instance. my other job is at a fabric store with a generally conservative clientele, and it always comes as a surprise when people use my pronouns and acknowledge the 'he/him' written in bold black sharpie on my nametag, likely written bigger than my name itself. even so, it still feels like a slap in the face when everyone ignores the rest. just a slap i'm used to.
there's multiple coworkers that ive corrected at the fabric store, and most of them have been corrected multiple times. its been years since i publicly came out. one of my coworkers corrected a repeat-offender coworker on their pronouns in front of customers and now they hasn't been scheduled in over five weeks.
this made me so emotional. as a semi-closeted trans person who cant get any aid due to my health insurance issues (im an immigrant), i got so emotional, i related so much to this video, thank you so much for this video.
i really appreciate you putting so much raw unfiltered emotion into this. as a trans person i find myself constantly censoring my feelings so i dont hurt cis people's, so seeing another trans person be openly, unashamedly angry and hurt about all of this is cathartic. combine that with your artistic talent and this is just such a powerful video. thank you for doing what youre doing, and stay safe
I'm trans, I have a friend who's a trans ally. Her brother is trans. But she told me recently she bought the game. Then went on this whole rant about how she doesn't get what the big deal is, how her giving money to Rowling isn't going to make a big difference anyway because she's already rich, about how she only wants to play the game to relive nostalgia she has for the original books, and how, sure, there are other wizard games she could play, but she wants to play in Hogwarts. And the whole time she was saying this to me, I just sat there, silently nodding and agreeing, because even though I disagreed with everything she was saying, even though it hurt so, so much that a video game was more important to her than a community not only am I in, but her own family too, I am still so deeply terrified of coming across as the angry reactionary trans person who hates cis people and takes everything too seriously. I'm so tired of walking on eggshells for people to gain just the smallest amount of respect, when at the end of the day, even if they say they care about me, they don't care if I get to exist in a world that doesn't want me dead. This video is so important. And while I'm terrified to send it to this person, I sincerely hope she finds it on her own. Edit: I'd like to clarify, the things I'm willing to say online are very VERY different from the things I'm willing to say in person to the face of someone I know. Out in the real world I shut my mouth, I conform, I try to not get hurt. Online I can and will stand up for myself.

Maybe you believe the ideology but you must tolerate people who don't. You're obviously terrified of the world, most likely because of stories you've been told by the trans activists. The world doesn't want you dead. Trans activists are using dubious tactics to scare you into conformity. You may think you've heard statistics about disproportionate violence committed against trans people because they are trans. I invite you to look into it with healthy skepticism. Many trans people have escaped the trans activist cult to lives of free contentment. You can too.

Thank you for the quick explanation of neopronouns. While the majority of my close friends are trans (binary and nonbinary), the only time I ever asked someone how to actually conjugate their neopronpuns, they called me ignorant and refused to answer. For a while I harbored a silent resentment of neopronouns because of it but this really opened it up to me.

This video made me cry a bit, but in a good way. Being a trans person especially a trans person who doesn’t pass as cis but presents very hyperfeminine feels like the worst thing I could possibly be right now, and I’ve been feeling so hopeless. I am constantly scared when I ride the train home because of the men who wait for me every day and shout obscenities and violent threats at me, the other day a woman looked at me and said out loud “what the fuck is that”. I’ve almost given up entirely on trans advocacy, it feels so hopeless and exhausting and I usually avoid any topic regarding trans rights legislations online, this is the first video I’ve watched about this stupid fucking game and I’m so glad it was you. You are so articulate and smart and empathetic and it was honestly such a breath of fresh air, I feel the same heartbreak I did when I woke up today but I feel weirdly energetically renewed and understood in a way doomscrolling through twitter discourse was absolutely not achieving for me. I'm a nonbinary 19 year old that wants to retain my feminine style while having facial hair, and I fear that if I do people will think I'm a predator. I know this is just a comment on a RUclips video, a drop in the ocean but...I hope you know how much it means. Truly. we've gotta be there for each other.
What makes this fear so crushing for me is that I cannot be open about feeling it. I cannot show it except in stolen moments with other trans people and with my therapist. I’m surrounded by cis people whose understanding of trans identity and transphobia is often at best a lukewarm compassion that begins and ends with „uwu trans people aren’t hurting anyone and deserve rights.“ At worst, they may want people like me to disappear forever. What situations like this show us over and over is that not only can we expect to continue to be shocked by the depth of loathing that people have for us, we can continue to expect detached sympathy from the bulk of even the best „good ones“ in our lives. It is lonely. It is frightening. I deeply love the trans people in my life and I just want to be able to sleep at night imagining that all of us are safe, and that feels less and less true in times like this as things escalate.
What would you suggest we cis people could offer beyond the belief that trans people deserve the same rights and compassion as others? Because you seem to feel that isn't enough, but without guidance it's hard to offer more.

They sometimes develop coping mechanism bluring their own body image in a way to prevent gender dysphoria of occuring and therefore, the easiest way to tell if someone is trans is hidden. Its still a source of distress, though. These are my thoughts and more or less useless for conversations with trans ppl. Because other than having a different experience we are (usually) able for small talk with other humans that arent openly hostile

Words that I and many other trans people cannot or are afraid to say, compiled into such a human and genuine way is so cathartic, but the reality of the situation is still terrifying. I wasn’t allowed to read hp growing up in evangelical culture, so when I first read it it was freeing. Now it feels so dark and oppressive. It’s funny how things change, but that’s life
For me it was fundamentalist culture, and yeah, I watched all the movies and read all the books from the library when I was still in the IFB cult. I was so disappointed when it came out that JKR is transphobic. I had left the cult the previous year and had just recently discovered I am non-binary. The Harry Potter series when I was growing up represented rebellion against oppressive (specifically religious) systems for me... who would've guessed it would come to represent upholding oppression.

Of course, there's context to that too, if they're unafraid to speak up for trans people regardless of their company or personal relationships, that is at once a tough thing to do for some people and a brave action depending on who they're talking to and the repercussions they might face for supporting trans people, again see hell reality.

Interesting day that you released this. I have a queer cis friend that loves this game and today she got me to try it out. I was shocked about the whole goblin thing that they chose to focus on. Honestly I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable about the plot. It felt like there was an attempt to include trans people but obviously a shallow one. I had the discussion about it with my friend but it was more about the magic for her. I hate that art I loved as a child turned out to be so bigoted. Frankly I don’t have any conclusions, between all of my nuanced ideas on the subject. But as a non-cis person it made me feel weird and I’m still conflicted
Gotta say, as a cis person it definitely makes me feel a bit weird too. But I feel like I’m constantly finding bigoted things in all sorts of media I enjoy. Sometimes it is big enough to ruin my enjoyment, and other times I am able to look past it and enjoy the media anyway. This problem just isn’t unique to Hogwarts Legacy. Lots of media and businesses perpetuate some negative attitude towards some group of people, and most have at least one bad person profiting off of the product, and many donate to causes that make life worse for marginalized people. Unfortunately, this problem is just so common, and people would have to boycott everything if they really wanted to be ethical. And the media you’d consume if you didn’t want to consume any even subtly bigoted narratives would be reduced to a relatively small pool.
As a trans jewish person i hate that even queer people easily dismiss the antisemitism in the game and hp, it feels like 90% of the people pointing it out and paying attention at all are just other queer jews, other than maybe a small mention in addition to always just talking about the transphobia

@@Undeadsweater yeah, it's been difficult for me to articulate how i feel regarding the argument i keep seeing about how it's inappropriate even for those who pirate the game to engage at all with legacy. i don't want to be insensitive to or dismissive of trans and jewish people, because their criticisms of the content and jk rowling are absolutely justified and deserve to be shouted out from the rooftops, but i don't think the answer should be passing absolute moral judgments onto people for playing the game. spending cold hard cash on it is one thing, as it directly contributes to the violence enacted against trans and jewish people, but simply consuming it as any other piece of media is consumed? as you said, this problem isn't unique to hp legacy, it proliferates in nearly every piece of media whether it's done consciously (like with legacy) or subconsciously. that's why media literacy and how you engage with said media is so important! there's content i enjoy that is toxic in its portrayal of indigenous people, bisexual people, mentally ill people, neurodivergent people, and trans people, and these are spaces that i myself occupy and move within. i understand the emotions and the motivations behind it, but i don't think it's helpful to act as if enjoying a particular piece of media is morally wrong and bad. after all i enjoy that content in spite of its hatefulness and bigotry, not because of it! at the end of the day, we need to look at real world solutions that help protect and value trans and jewish lives. what that looks like is different for each person depending on their individual circumstances like location and finances, but simply avoiding a video game is not the answer here. on a political level, it's absolutely devoid of any meaning.

I live in tennessee, things've never been *great* here seeing as it's literally illegal for any county to create anti-discrimination laws and that sort of thing, but even then, I remember visiting nashville a few months ago and there were drag queen busses all over the place. They have all disappeared. And you talked a little bit about SB0003 (the anti-'drag' bill going into affect april 1st): "*This bill creates an offense for a person who engages in an adult cabaret performance on public property or in a location where the adult cabaret performance could be viewed by a person who is not an adult*. The bill defines an "adult cabaret performance" to mean a performance in a location other than an adult cabaret that features topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, *male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest*, or similar entertainers, *regardless of whether or not performed for consideration*." I disagree with you on the point that it bans trans people performing specifically, it just outright bans trans people entirely. Because what counts as an "adult cabaret performance"? What is entertainment that "appeals to the prurient interest"? I mean it outright said that the intent of the person being punished doesn't matter, so effectively it's up to the very progressive leftist trans ally cops enforcing the bill to decide whether the "male or female impersonator" in question is being "prurient" and as we all know trans people and our bodies are famously not seen as perverted or inherently sexual or a fetish or whatever at all. I'm a trans guy, let's imagine that said law is being enforced now I'm driving on the highway and I get pulled over. None of my legal documents are changed, to change the sex marker on your drivers license here you need to have a court order recognizing or statement from a physician confirming that you have "fully transitioned" which a very small minority of people fall under. I get asked for my license and the cop sees a giant F in the sex section. I'm unfortunately still pre-everything, but what if my appearance is decided that it doesn't reflect that? Me driving a goddamn car could very well count as performance and god knows how many minors COULD have seen me in the drivers seat (while the bill was being heard they made it a point that even being seen through a car/bus window counts), so now I can be charged with a class A misdemeanor if it's my first time, which could land me in jail for up to about a year or a fine of up to 2.5k dollars (or both), if it's a repeat offense, I can be charged with a fucking class e *felony* and be put in prison for 1-6 years plus potentially a 3k dollar fine. The 8th stage of genocide is persecution by the way. Not to trauma dump in the ro ramdin comment section but I would be lying if I said I wasn't constantly wondering if I'll even still be around to make these sort of comments this time next year. I'm scared. I'm fucking terrified. I don't know what I'm going to do. i always knew things would get worse just in time for me starting HRT, here i am 6 months in and its complicated, scared of what will happen but not regretting starting hrt, if it goes worst case then at least i got to be me before the end, still watching all my cis friends buy this even after i beg them not to and explain how harmful it is only to hear them deny the impact is depressing and concerning, its to hard to let go of these people so far at least i haven't they're close friends but my trust in them has been shattered and i do worry how far will they go, will this start them down a pipeline to transphbia
Hey, just here to share some care. I got in a s imilar situation with my friend group and it was heart breaking, but at least in those situations one can make out who will really be there to have your back and who won't. I'd say don't worry about the transphobia pipeline, you're part of their lives, and that alone means for them trans people are not just a vacuous concept that can be dehumanized into a threat or a ridicule, to the very least now it represents a person; you. I know it's not much coming from a stranger in the internet, but things do get better. You'll pull trough, and even when you don't, sometimes the most unexpected people will be there to help you out, you got this. BTW nice avatar, I'm glad watamote is still relevant these days
the wild thing for me about the harry potter universe was how it was introduced to me by my abuser forcing me go so see the second film because she didn't want to go alone. watching harry be abused by his so-called family just went right over her head and i had to sit there and act like i didn't feel something in the moment when he was rescued by his friends. it's been easy to dump jk rowling, rOWling, fuck her and the fandom she rode in on.

Especially when you take into account someone’s young age coinciding with the theatrical release. I mean, one of those types of movies has to be your first, so why not HP? Or, it could be that HP was just the first prominent example from their childhood that they can remember, and they’ve forgotten about other movies from their childhood with similar scenarios.

Harry Potter was a massive part of my childhood. It was one of the main things my siblings and I bonded over. My sister and I would stand in line for the books and the movies and we’d marathon the films around Christmas. Suffice it to say, Harry Potter was a big part of my life for a long time. I did not buy Hogwarts Legacy. It was not a difficult thing to do. Yea it looked like it was fun, and I’m sure it’s perfectly serviceable at the very least. But despite the fact the this franchise was a huge part of my childhood, letting it go and not buying a video game was not a challenge. I have never felt like I missed anything. Never regretted that choice. You can buy the game if you want, but by doing so you are openly stating where your priorities and values lie. It is the easiest thing in the world to save yourself $70+ to show support for something that matters. For a community that desperately needs it right now. If you don’t, that is your choice. But as the old adage goes “Actions speak louder than words”, and your actions are speaking volumes.

Trans people are nothing like gay people. Gay people just want equal rights for their relationships, and there’s literally no rational argument for denying those rights. Trans ideologues are thoroughly irrational and at the highest level trying to deny and destroy sех-based rights and protections (ie in advocating for any man to be placed in a woman’s prison based on “self-identification”, or women’s sports etc). Hey, I'm the cishet white male that's watching, and I watched it all lol. I have nothing to say in response other than this video was incredible, thoughtful, and heartbreaking. You are hilarious. Thank you for sharing your experience, and on the off chance you see this, I would like to share mine. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, it's more of a "was" now, but still, I followed the development of the game closely. I had every intention of buying it, then the discourse started. I do try to be an ally where I feel I can, so I decided to try and understand how trans people felt about this. The more I watched the more I saw myself asking "this seems like a weird hill to die on". I went down the same apathetic path of "she's not directly involved, it's just a video game" so on so forth. I am so glad that I decided to keep paying attention. I have been of the mind that transphobic genocidal action is on the rise. I know that genocide, whether it's physical or cultural, is slow and insidious. This was the feeling I had deep down in my stomach. I am glad I never purchased this game. I felt sick watching how people so easily fell into transphobia. I took a step back and was baffled. Soon I was saying "it's just a game, why are people being so ruthless to the trans community". I will never know that fear, that pain and that betrayal that all of you felt seeing how quickly everyone demonized you over a video game. The closest I will ever get is the last part of this video, and it won't even scratch the surface. Everyone can agree that harassment is bad. It would be great if people could have empathy and there wouldn't need to be an outcry of pain. That's all I could see from the trans activists that were sending threats and denouncing public figures. Having to live in fear day in and day out, never knowing who you can trust, it can turn the most compassionate souls into monsters. Monsters are always seen as easy fodder and it's just the status quo when someone kills them. "Riots are the language of the unheard" always pops into my head with these kinds of things. Of course no one wants violence, but when everything else has been left unheard, what do we expect? For them to just shrug and say "whelp we tried the nice way guess we will just die now". To reference Zelda, I think everyone who looks into the bosses and monsters of those games, you start to feel like maybe we are the bad ones. Maybe Link is the one forcing his way into the monster's home. Maybe he is the one who looks like a threat and kills the monster for simply protecting what little they have. Then you have to wonder if they are monsters at all or do they just look different. Are they just doing what anyone would do to survive? and suddenly it's okay to destroy them because they "look" evil. Why do they look evil? Is it because we are told they are, we are told these traits are evil, that no matter what they do it has to be an evil act. I can't help but see this in the current culture war. We are being told all of these things about trans people, yet why can't anyone see all these evil things? It's because none of that is happening. If we really want to go on a crusade against child predators why not the right? At least if we went after right and far-right representatives we would have real evidence of their predation. I regret ever doubting the trans community and I hope to grow from this and be a useful ally. I hope the trans community can forgive me and my ilk for our often willful and dangerous ignorance after we have seen the light. I am so glad this video popped up in my feed.

Also I wanted to say you and all other trans people have my support. I...don't know if that necessarily makes me an ally - I haven't really actively contributed much as of yet, but I've at least done the bare minimum of cutting out gross celebrities and companies from recieving my money. Never getting Hog Legacy. Trying to listen to a lot of other voices within the community and broaden my knowledge as well. I'm not sure I would have made it this far if it weren't for all the friends I've made who've dealt with the trans experience. I was unfortunately apart of the group who thought It didn't matter as it's just a drop in the bucket for blue eyes white woman. I'm Trans fem NB myself and this really put into perspective with what I failing to see. I was duped by rose gold glasses of being young. When ro brought up reading the books and not getting why they were still treated differently really put it into place. Sucks I already paid for the game but at least I can pull my head out of the sand and be more attentive and supportive to my community and others as well. as a trans person who grew up in tennessee, it was amazing to watch people go from ignorant, but mostly kind, to opinionated and cruel. i used to be able to talk about my transness with strangers and mostly be heard- not always understood or received, but almost never written off entirely. now i mostly stay on the dl after being out for 11 years. i don’t trust people to listen anymore. even people i consider acquaintances don’t know who i really am. i’ve been talked over, harassed, and assaulted this year more than any other. i thought i felt helpless when i came out at 14, but i had no idea how bad it could get.
I am so sorry. I wish I could offer you comfort, but I can't. Instead I'll say that I am absolutely horrified by what is happening.

The past year or two have been some of the hardest for me and my identity. In the past it was relatively peaceful around the topic of being a trans person but recently I have seen some of the most disgusting things being said online and in general life and society which I have had an unbelievably difficult time handling. I still to this day cannot understand where such hatred comes from towards us who have absolutely no affect on other people’s lives, who are just trying to cope with how hard we already have it, without the added hatred from those we don’t even know that judge us for the sole reason that we’re different. I’m struggling with the vision of my future, as I’m scared I’ll never be able to live as I want. I’m still hiding from everyone I know but I’m hoping one day things will get better and us as people who deserve respect will be able to live without these worries.
Because WE DON'T CARE. What a sad excuse for human being. All you people are wanting attention, love and support from other because you can't even do that yourself. That is why there is THERAPY. You clearly need it.

Its interesting, because I’m black and a trans male and hearing about the vitriol espoused by the cpac just made me… so tired. My brain is just on “yep just another day, at least they’ll kill me for being black. Somehow my identity will be protected by my blackness.” Like, if I retreat into the closet and remain a “black woman” I’m already masculinized, deprived of femininity in a way, convenient to me. If I come out and proud as a trans male, I may not be deprived socially because most social consequences of existing will hit my blackness. Antiblackness is gender neutral and white transphobes will fall for anti-blackness before they reach for transphobia because both are so deeply intertwined.

wow, another great video Ro. I’m a 14-year-old closeted trans girl and I cried watching this. Recently, I was getting carpooled by my friend with another friend who rides home with him. At one point the second friend I mentioned said that he was getting Hogwarts legacy and then he talked about how people are getting “canceled” for playing it. And the other friend’s dad who was driving didn’t know why so he asked. I was eager to tell him “Jk Rowling” and so were my friends. But we had different motivations. Everyone in the car gave an eye roll at Jk Rowling being transphobic. They said it shouldn’t matter what they do with their money. And I agreed at the time. It felt wrong hearing them brush off how bad Jk Rowling is. She is someone who has harmed me and people like me immeasurably. Yet, they didn’t care. But I care. I wish I could just tell them they’re supporting a horrible person, but I would never be able to. I started questioning my gender more than a year ago. Since that time, I’ve had constant dread and I’ve been constantly depressed. I switched schools recently and the people there are about every -phobic and -ist you can think of. It seems like every time I get close to coming out, I see more news about anti-trans bills. I’m too scared to talk to my therapist about how trans issues are affecting me or how dysphoria is because I’m not out. Like a lot of trans people, I felt hopeless hearing politicians basically advocate for my death. And it's gotten worse hearing about the anti-trans bills being passed in my state. I’ve heard so many anti-trans people, I even had a teacher say transphobic things when we were talking and he did it TWICE. All of this hate has scared me into not coming out. I’m even writing this from a secret account. And... it’s also made me side with people who really don’t care about trans people. I’ve been taking the bare minimum and ignoring how uncomfortable some of the actions people do and some of the words they say make me feel. I shouldn’t have to be out for them to stop saying slurs, I shouldn’t have to be out for them to stop making fun of trans people, and I shouldn’t have to be out for them to at least listen to trans people telling them not to play the game. You can’t be neutral about trans people when we are literally dying and getting denied medical care. So moving forward, I’m gonna call people out when they’re deserving and I’m not gonna be friends with people who don’t care about me. I’m also not gonna let people scare me into hiding. So thank you for helping me some Ro and thank you if you read this far.

It works for specifically for a member of a marginalized group hating another marginalized group. Because all marginalized people know what it’s like to be misunderstood and doubted.

Recently, Arkansas passed a law to limit trans children's access to life-saving hormones... and then passed a law to remove protections for children against workplace mistreatment and excessive work hours. They do not care about the children.
I think the biggest thing I learned throughout all of the Hogwarts Legacy discourse over the past few months is that a lot of folks on the left see trans people as a concept. Like, they understand trans people exist and proudly will say to support trans rights because of course you should support the rights of someone just trying to be themselves!, but there is a separation. They might watch some trans creators or follow a few on socials, but they don't really know any trans people. They don't have trans friends, they don't spend time on a regular basis around trans people, and they don't think about trans issues when they aren't looking at discourse about them. To them, trans people are just out there doing their own thing, but that thing is far away from them. Unconnected. As you said in the video, if someone is a piece of shit to your friend, you wouldn't turnaround and then support that person, and that is how everyone who considers themself an ally should be treating this. To too many though, when looking at Hogwarts Legacy and the request from many trans people to not play it, they don't think of an actual trans person; they instead relate it to the concept of transness, and when there is this separation, they don't feel any sort of stakes, any sort of emotional tie, and I think because of that, it makes it easier for them to justify to themselves why buying the wizard game isn't that bad because she's already a billionaire! and it can be used as a way to raise money for a trans charity! and this one trans person on twitter said that the game is great! and whatever else helps them feel less bad about doing something that they know people will judge them for--that they hopefully know is shitty. I can't help but think that if more people actually had trans friends, they wouldn't think twice about buying the game simply because that'd be a shitty thing to do to a friend. And yeah, obviously trans people are not a monolith so I am sure there are exceptions, but given that the vast majority of the trans community has expressed discomfort with the idea of people playing the game, I'd imagine those exceptions are few and far between. To be honest, even though seeing the trans people I know express discomfort with playing the game made my decision to not play it a no brainer, I don't think it should take having a personal stake in the trans community to support it in this way, but that does seem to be the case for many people and that is beyond frustrating, especially when they never take any active steps to get to know a trans person. I really hope people stop treating trans folk as a concept and start actually treating them like humans.
Anyway, wonderful video that I know must have been hard to make for about a billion different reasons. Also, thank you for continuing to spread the good word of Outer Wilds and why most open-world games suck.

Sadly I don't have any real life trans friends since it's dangerous for trans ppl here to even express themselves.
But my opinion (probably doesn't matter) is that the discourse in the end was a bit more harmful overall.
It seems like it only generated more clicks for the game etc. (And assholes buying the game just to spite trans ppl).

@@rG1vZ I can only go off of my anecdotal experience which obviously is not perfect, but I have only seen some trans people be okay with people playing the game whereas I have seen A LOT of trans people being uncomfortable with it. I can’t make your choices for you or tell you what to value, but I do not think the trans community is split down the middle on this. They are heavily leaning to the side of being uncomfortable with the game, and I think that is important to take into account. As for if the discourse was helpful or harmful, obviously the response to many trans people expressing their uneasiness and frustration about people playing the game has been bad, but I don’t think that means that they shouldn’t have voiced their opinion by just staying quiet so people could play the wizard game guilt free. Doing the right thing goes wrong sometimes.

I was interested to hear Ro's discussion on the neopronouns. I don't think I've ever come across someone who uses them, but I have noticed that they are picked up by a lot of people talking about trans issues. Like I have seen people who say they are fine respecting trans women wanting to be called "she" or trans men wanting to be called "he" but they have a problem with "they" even (which isn't even a neo pronoun, in my view - because I've seen plenty of people who use "they"!) or they go "hu, huh ,huh - but using a made up word like "ze" or "ve" is just stupid". I think the people harping on that like it's the biggest problem they have with respecting people's pronouns probably haven't got as far as the ones like "cat" and "fae".

I read the books roughly 15-21 years ago depending on which book we're talking about and because of that whole child poverty thing I didn't actually get to keep them so it's not like I threw them out in protest of her views.
I don't have a platform of any kind beyond my personal voice so I do my best to learn directly from trans people about the issues that affect them and direct people to learn from trans people as well. I try to convey what I learn to people when topics come up and remind others that trans people are people and idle opinions on their health and personal lives is something they wouldn't tolerate others doing to them. I try to show people that large platforms voicing hate have direct consequences on the harm and violence experienced by the trans community and in the case of Joanne specifically that support for her works is seen by her as direct support for her ideals.
Expressing solidarity is inherently performative. I can't actually be an ally unless I perform being an ally. I'm not looking for recognition, but to show others that there is support from people outside the trans community. Ro specifically mentioned that the channel doesn't reach many people in my demographic which is why I made a point of mentioning anything in the first place.
I understand if you don't trust or believe me, or feel that I'm not doing enough. The more I learn the more I see how cis people continue to fail to be allies. It's entirely reasonable to believe that I'll fail you to. I'm just doing my best not to.

@@blacktigerpaw1 Under the parameter of gender, which is a different concept to sex. No one is denying that trans women are of the male sex or trans men are of the female sex (obviously, otherwise they wouldn't identify as trans).
As for what "woman gender" and "man gender" (and other genders) are, they are a mix of social interactions, external perception, and internal identity. Much like religious or political identity, genuine self identification under a label is the main thing that makes a person that thing. How they are perceived and their social interactions may reflect stereotypes of that label or not, what makes perception and interaction part of gender is mainly because of how we often use it to denote those stereotypes.

Like, I know in my own life, sometimes the smallest considerations can make the game changing difference in how my day goes. The places that have free tampons in the bathroom, the person who doesn't assume my gender/race/sexuality, the free snacks in the lobby that keep me from passing out.
If there are any of these micro changes you could think of that might help me learn to help trans people be more comfortable in spaces I have agency in, I would like to learn.

My family and I live in ohio, and we all are on hrt and live out as trans. My health insurance tried to take away the testosterone ive been taking for over a decade. I had to prove i was "mentally capable of consenting" to treatment.
Even back when i first started my medical transition, when i had to skirt aroubd my therapist at the time who refused to write me a recommendation letter for hrt so i had to go to the local lgbt clinic, get misgendered by the doctor and lie my ass off about how stereotypically masculine i am and i like ONLY women, deal with the doctors very uncomfortable comments on my race (im black and mixed) (in reality im very gnc and queer and love all genders) and then pay OUT OF POCKET for my hormones (and eventually get a discount with goodrx) bc insurance refuses to cover any trans healthcare back then...
Even with all that. I never once had to prove i was psychologically competent enough to consent to my own medical care. That i wasnt being "influenced". I'm 30 goddamn years old. Ive had top surgery. I know whati want, ive known since i was 16.
But now we have to consider fleeing our state for real. We're poor, disabled, and we might have no choice but to flee. So many trans people in just my city have been talking about where to go, how to train each other in self defense, have plans to escape.

recently, a coworker apologized to me for using the wrong pronouns. i immediately brush it off, because that's what we do. "no worries, im used to it. i hear it all the time, pretty much every day," i told him. this is true and i try not to take it personally for obvious reasons. "i know, but i'm better than that," he said, and i believe him. he seems like a really nice dude. i feel like there's a lot one could unpack in this scenario, this simple instance. my other job is at a fabric store with a generally conservative clientele, and it always comes as a surprise when people use my pronouns and acknowledge the 'he/him' written in bold black sharpie on my nametag, likely written bigger than my name itself. even so, it still feels like a slap in the face when everyone ignores the rest. just a slap i'm used to.
there's multiple coworkers that ive corrected at the fabric store, and most of them have been corrected multiple times. its been years since i publicly came out. one of my coworkers corrected a repeat-offender coworker on their pronouns in front of customers and now they hasn't been scheduled in over five weeks.

I'm trans, I have a friend who's a trans ally. Her brother is trans. But she told me recently she bought the game. Then went on this whole rant about how she doesn't get what the big deal is, how her giving money to Rowling isn't going to make a big difference anyway because she's already rich, about how she only wants to play the game to relive nostalgia she has for the original books, and how, sure, there are other wizard games she could play, but she wants to play in Hogwarts. And the whole time she was saying this to me, I just sat there, silently nodding and agreeing, because even though I disagreed with everything she was saying, even though it hurt so, so much that a video game was more important to her than a community not only am I in, but her own family too, I am still so deeply terrified of coming across as the angry reactionary trans person who hates cis people and takes everything too seriously. I'm so tired of walking on eggshells for people to gain just the smallest amount of respect, when at the end of the day, even if they say they care about me, they don't care if I get to exist in a world that doesn't want me dead.
This video is so important. And while I'm terrified to send it to this person, I sincerely hope she finds it on her own.
Edit: I'd like to clarify, the things I'm willing to say online are very VERY different from the things I'm willing to say in person to the face of someone I know. Out in the real world I shut my mouth, I conform, I try to not get hurt. Online I can and will stand up for myself.

Since you've had this experience it should make you sympathetic to family/friends who've had to hear trans ideology blasted at them while they could only nod and pretend to agree. Maybe you believe the ideology but you must tolerate people who don't. You're obviously terrified of the world, most likely because of stories you've been told by the trans activists. The world doesn't want you dead. Trans activists are using dubious tactics to scare you into conformity. You may think you've heard statistics about disproportionate violence committed against trans people because they are trans. I invite you to look into it with healthy skepticism. Many trans people have escaped the trans activist cult to lives of free contentment. You can too.

Thank you for the quick explanation of neopronouns. While the majority of my close friends are trans (binary and nonbinary), the only time I ever asked someone how to actually conjugate their neopronpuns, they called me ignorant and refused to answer. For a while I harbored a silent resentment of neopronouns because of it but this really opened it up to me.

This video made me cry a bit, but in a good way. Being a trans person especially a trans person who doesn’t pass as cis but presents very hyperfeminine feels like the worst thing I could possibly be right now, and I’ve been feeling so hopeless. I am constantly scared when I ride the train home because of the men who wait for me every day and shout obscenities and violent threats at me, the other day a woman looked at me and said out loud “what the fuck is that”. I’ve almost given up entirely on trans advocacy, it feels so hopeless and exhausting and I usually avoid any topic regarding trans rights legislations online, this is the first video I’ve watched about this stupid fucking game and I’m so glad it was you. You are so articulate and smart and empathetic and it was honestly such a breath of fresh air, I feel the same heartbreak I did when I woke up today but I feel weirdly energetically renewed and understood in a way doomscrolling through twitter discourse was absolutely not achieving for me. What makes this fear so crushing for me is that I cannot be open about feeling it. I cannot show it except in stolen moments with other trans people and with my therapist.
I’m surrounded by cis people whose understanding of trans identity and transphobia is often at best a lukewarm compassion that begins and ends with „uwu trans people aren’t hurting anyone and deserve rights.“ At worst, they may want people like me to disappear forever.
What situations like this show us over and over is that not only can we expect to continue to be shocked by the depth of loathing that people have for us, we can continue to expect detached sympathy from the bulk of even the best „good ones“ in our lives.
It is lonely. It is frightening. I deeply love the trans people in my life and I just want to be able to sleep at night imagining that all of us are safe, and that feels less and less true in times like this as things escalate.
What would you suggest we cis people could offer beyond the belief that trans people deserve the same rights and compassion as others? Because you seem to feel that isn't enough, but without guidance it's hard to offer more.

They sometimes develop coping mechanism bluring their own body image in a way to prevent gender dysphoria of occuring and therefore, the easiest way to tell if someone is trans is hidden. Its still a source of distress, though.
These are my thoughts and more or less useless for conversations with trans ppl. Because other than having a different experience we are (usually) able for small talk with other humans that arent openly hostile

this was such a visceral experience. Words that I and many other trans people cannot or are afraid to say, compiled into such a human and genuine way is so cathartic, but the reality of the situation is still terrifying. Things are currently looking grim and it's so fucking hard to not get lost in the thousands of legislations that are floating around, waiting to be passed. An absurd, hurt, terrified catharsis can be found in this video for managing to take these tangled emotions and slam them on the table for the world to see.

The Harry Potter series when I was growing up represented rebellion against oppressive (specifically religious) systems for me... who would've guessed it would come to represent upholding oppression.

Of course, there's context to that too, if they're unafraid to speak up for trans people regardless of their company or personal relationships, that is at once a tough thing to do for some people and a brave action depending on who they're talking to and the repercussions they might face for supporting trans people, again see hell reality.

Interesting day that you released this. I have a queer cis friend that loves this game and today she got me to try it out. I was shocked about the whole goblin thing that they chose to focus on. Honestly I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable about the plot. It felt like there was an attempt to include trans people but obviously a shallow one. I had the discussion about it with my friend but it was more about the magic for her. I hate that art I loved as a child turned out to be so bigoted. Frankly I don’t have any conclusions, between all of my nuanced ideas on the subject. But as a non-cis person it made me feel weird and I’m still conflicted
Gotta say, as a cis person it definitely makes me feel a bit weird too. But I feel like I’m constantly finding bigoted things in all sorts of media I enjoy. Sometimes it is big enough to ruin my enjoyment, and other times I am able to look past it and enjoy the media anyway. This problem just isn’t unique to Hogwarts Legacy. Lots of media and businesses perpetuate some negative attitude towards some group of people, and most have at least one bad person profiting off of the product, and many donate to causes that make life worse for marginalized people.
Unfortunately, this problem is just so common, and people would have to boycott everything if they really wanted to be ethical. And the media you’d consume if you didn’t want to consume any even subtly bigoted narratives would be reduced to a relatively small pool.
As a trans jewish person i hate that even queer people easily dismiss the antisemitism in the game and hp, it feels like 90% of the people pointing it out and paying attention at all are just other queer jews, other than maybe a small mention in addition to always just talking about the transphobia

as you said, this problem isn't unique to hp legacy, it proliferates in nearly every piece of media whether it's done consciously (like with legacy) or subconsciously. that's why media literacy and how you engage with said media is so important! there's content i enjoy that is toxic in its portrayal of indigenous people, bisexual people, mentally ill people, neurodivergent people, and trans people, and these are spaces that i myself occupy and move within. i understand the emotions and the motivations behind it, but i don't think it's helpful to act as if enjoying a particular piece of media is morally wrong and bad. after all i enjoy that content in spite of its hatefulness and bigotry, not because of it!
at the end of the day, we need to look at real world solutions that help protect and value trans and jewish lives. what that looks like is different for each person depending on their individual circumstances like location and finances, but simply avoiding a video game is not the answer here. on a political level, it's absolutely devoid of any meaning.

I live in tennessee, things've never been *great* here seeing as it's literally illegal for any county to create anti-discrimination laws and that sort of thing, but even then, I remember visiting nashville a few months ago and there were drag queen busses all over the place. They have all disappeared. And you talked a little bit about SB0003 (the anti-'drag' bill going into affect april 1st): "*This bill creates an offense for a person who engages in an adult cabaret performance on public property or in a location where the adult cabaret performance could be viewed by a person who is not an adult*. The bill defines an "adult cabaret performance" to mean a performance in a location other than an adult cabaret that features topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, *male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest*, or similar entertainers, *regardless of whether or not performed for consideration*." I disagree with you on the point that it bans trans people performing specifically, it just outright bans trans people entirely. Because what counts as an "adult cabaret performance"? What is entertainment that "appeals to the prurient interest"? I mean it outright said that the intent of the person being punished doesn't matter, so effectively it's up to the very progressive leftist trans ally cops enforcing the bill to decide whether the "male or female impersonator" in question is being "prurient" and as we all know trans people and our bodies are famously not seen as perverted or inherently sexual or a fetish or whatever at all.
I'm a trans guy, let's imagine that said law is being enforced now I'm driving on the highway and I get pulled over. None of my legal documents are changed, to change the sex marker on your drivers license here you need to have a court order recognizing or statement from a physician confirming that you have "fully transitioned" which a very small minority of people fall under. I get asked for my license and the cop sees a giant F in the sex section. I'm unfortunately still pre-everything, but what if my appearance is decided that it doesn't reflect that? Me driving a goddamn car could very well count as performance and god knows how many minors COULD have seen me in the drivers seat (while the bill was being heard they made it a point that even being seen through a car/bus window counts), so now I can be charged with a class A misdemeanor if it's my first time, which could land me in jail for up to about a year or a fine of up to 2.5k dollars (or both), if it's a repeat offense, I can be charged with a fucking class e *felony* and be put in prison for 1-6 years plus potentially a 3k dollar fine.
The 8th stage of genocide is persecution by the way.

Hey, just here to share some care. I got in a s imilar situation with my friend group and it was heart breaking, but at least in those situations one can make out who will really be there to have your back and who won't.
I'd say don't worry about the transphobia pipeline, you're part of their lives, and that alone means for them trans people are not just a vacuous concept that can be dehumanized into a threat or a ridicule, to the very least now it represents a person; you.
I know it's not much coming from a stranger in the internet, but things do get better. You'll pull trough, and even when you don't, sometimes the most unexpected people will be there to help you out, you got this.

the wild thing for me about the harry potter universe was how it was introduced to me by my abuser forcing me go so see the second film because she didn't want to go alone. watching harry be abused by his so-called family just went right over her head and i had to sit there and act like i didn't feel something in the moment when he was rescued by his friends. it's been easy to dump jk rowling, rOWling, fuck her and the fandom she rode in on.
Had you not seen any other movie before Harry Potter? Being a foster child to a abusive family is not a new concept that was intruduced with HP.

@@verdisteller While having an abused child protagonist is a common trope in fiction, sometimes the stars align that Harry Potter is the first movie that people see feature it. Especially when you take into account someone’s young age coinciding with the theatrical release. I mean, one of those types of movies has to be your first, so why not HP?
Or, it could be that HP was just the first prominent example from their childhood that they can remember, and they’ve forgotten about other movies from their childhood with similar scenarios.

Harry Potter was a massive part of my childhood. It was one of the main things my siblings and I bonded over. My sister and I would stand in line for the books and the movies and we’d marathon the films around Christmas. Suffice it to say, Harry Potter was a big part of my life for a long time. I did not buy Hogwarts Legacy. It was not a difficult thing to do. Yea it looked like it was fun, and I’m sure it’s perfectly serviceable at the very least. But despite the fact the this franchise was a huge part of my childhood, letting it go and not buying a video game was not a challenge. I have never felt like I missed anything. Never regretted that choice. You can buy the game if you want, but by doing so you are openly stating where your priorities and values lie. It is the easiest thing in the world to save yourself $70+ to show support for something that matters. For a community that desperately needs it right now. If you don’t, that is your choice. But as the old adage goes “Actions speak louder than words”, and your actions are speaking volumes.

Because as your legibility stands currently, trying to figure out what you were saying was akin to trying to have a conversation with someone that only speaks a fictional language featured in a filler episode of Star Trek.
From what I was able to deduce from your incoherent rambling was that you think that people spending the equivalent of what they would pay in union fees on coffee instead makes them class traitors by my logic. So I ask, where did I say that? I know you’re trying to relate the logic I put forth to your scenario, but given that they are two completely different situations, the comparison is pretty fucking stupid. I never said that people who choose to buy Hogwarts Legacy are traitors of any kind, I just said that by choosing to buy it despite all they know about the franchise, it’s creator and where the money goes, they are stating through their actions where their priorities lie. And that, you could relate to union fees. Yes, if someone is against unionization because of the fees they might have to pay, but spend that amount of money on coffee, you could make the same statement about their priorities that I did about the priorities of the Hogwarts Legacy purchasers. In that, they value their own personal entertainment/luxury etc. over the lives or quality of life of the people around them. You don’t have to be “relaxed” about it because it’s a choice they made, nor should you respect it. The point of my comment was literally the opposite of that. That they are free to make those choices if they want to, but their choices speak volumes about where their priorities lie and ultimately the kind of people they are. This is where I would encourage you to pair the learning of literacy and sentence structure with basic reading comprehension as well. I think you’ll find that it keeps you from making yourself look like an idiot.
As for your last question “are you organized?”. What the fuck do you even mean by that? I’m not even sure you know at this point. I am generally an organized person, yes. Are you asking if I belong to a union? If so, why? Being unionized isn’t something that’s really in my control. How is that relevant? Are you asking if I belong to an organization? If so, what kind specifically? You’re really just throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks. Well, it doesn’t.
And then there’s your point about having to argue with “so called left and woke people” for one, I know for a fact that if you were asked to define “woke” you wouldn’t be able to. I am so sorry you have still in 2024 all these bills against trans people in america, i had no idea. A lot of what you said is educating, helping me to learn. I stumbled upon you video abd its safe to say i am a trans ally. Ill look into your videos more to understand how trans people live and what oppression they have to deal with.
Trans people are nothing like gay people. Gay people just want equal rights for their relationships, and there’s literally no rational argument for denying those rights. Trans ideologues are thoroughly irrational and at the highest level trying to deny and destroy sех-based rights and protections (ie in advocating for any man to be placed in a woman’s prison based on “self-identification”, or women’s sports etc).
It’s also reinforcing the most regressive gender stereotypes about what it means to “be” a man or woman.

Thank you for sharing your experience, and on the off chance you see this, I would like to share mine. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, it's more of a "was" now, but still, I followed the development of the game closely. I had every intention of buying it, then the discourse started. I do try to be an ally where I feel I can, so I decided to try and understand how trans people felt about this. The more I watched the more I saw myself asking "this seems like a weird hill to die on". I went down the same apathetic path of "she's not directly involved, it's just a video game" so on so forth. I am so glad that I decided to keep paying attention.
I have been of the mind that transphobic genocidal action is on the rise. I know that genocide, whether it's physical or cultural, is slow and insidious. This was the feeling I had deep down in my stomach. I am glad I never purchased this game. I felt sick watching how people so easily fell into transphobia. I took a step back and was baffled. Soon I was saying "it's just a game, why are people being so ruthless to the trans community". I will never know that fear, that pain and that betrayal that all of you felt seeing how quickly everyone demonized you over a video game. The closest I will ever get is the last part of this video, and it won't even scratch the surface.
Everyone can agree that harassment is bad. It would be great if people could have empathy and there wouldn't need to be an outcry of pain. That's all I could see from the trans activists that were sending threats and denouncing public figures. Having to live in fear day in and day out, never knowing who you can trust, it can turn the most compassionate souls into monsters. Monsters are always seen as easy fodder and it's just the status quo when someone kills them. "Riots are the language of the unheard" always pops into my head with these kinds of things. Of course no one wants violence, but when everything else has been left unheard, what do we expect? For them to just shrug and say "whelp we tried the nice way guess we will just die now".
To reference Zelda, I think everyone who looks into the bosses and monsters of those games, you start to feel like maybe we are the bad ones. Maybe Link is the one forcing his way into the monster's home. Maybe he is the one who looks like a threat and kills the monster for simply protecting what little they have. Then you have to wonder if they are monsters at all or do they just look different. Are they just doing what anyone would do to survive? and suddenly it's okay to destroy them because they "look" evil. Why do they look evil? Is it because we are told they are, we are told these traits are evil, that no matter what they do it has to be an evil act. I can't help but see this in the current culture war. We are being told all of these things about trans people, yet why can't anyone see all these evil things? It's because none of that is happening. If we really want to go on a crusade against child predators why not the right? At least if we went after right and far-right representatives we would have real evidence of their predation.
I regret ever doubting the trans community and I hope to grow from this and be a useful ally. I hope the trans community can forgive me and my ilk for our often willful and dangerous ignorance after we have seen the light. I am so glad this video popped up in my feed.

Powerful and painfully real at the end. I shared about a minute and a half starting with the "what do we need to do?" section to friends who have continuously insisted that it's not a big deal. The frustration at others wanting to buy this game has been frustrating on it's own - i had a hard time putting to words exactly why it hurt. Thank you for pouring yourself into this video, for eloquently placing words where i found only wide-eyed anger and head-hanging hurt. I know my (cis) friends don't intent to harm anyone, but the growing anti-trans rhetoric is only amplified by those who will continue to support its most vocal supporters.

Also I wanted to say you and all other trans people have my support. I...don't know if that necessarily makes me an ally - I haven't really actively contributed much as of yet, but I've at least done the bare minimum of cutting out gross celebrities and companies from recieving my money. Never getting Hog Legacy. Trying to listen to a lot of other voices within the community and broaden my knowledge as well.
I'm not sure I would have made it this far if it weren't for all the friends I've made who've dealt with the trans experience. I'm thankful that I got to meet them all, and I'm glad that at the very least I can be a support and a listening ear to them.
I was unfortunately apart of the group who thought It didn't matter as it's just a drop in the bucket for blue eyes white woman. I'm Trans fem NB myself and this really put into perspective with what I failing to see. I was duped by rose gold glasses of being young. When ro brought up reading the books and not getting why they were still treated differently really put it into place. Sucks I already paid for the game but at least I can pull my head out of the sand and be more attentive and supportive to my community and others as well. (Also got like 30 hours in and it's so boring, this is what I deserve.)
