I'm 74 years old, and I stopped drinking eight years ago. This was after drinking for fifty years. Anytime I hear of someone who has relapsed, it's a stark reminder how fragile my sobriety really is. I made a promise to myself that I would never seek no fault excuses to go back drinking. There is no possible way that if I went back, I'd magically become a social drinker. Take care and the best of luck

Exactly. I have recently convinced myself that the overall idea about learning to control alcohol is one of the biggest illusions. It is a poison that always poses a danger regardless of how succesful someone has been up until the point of going back to drinking. We should consider alcohol as a vicious toxic enemy and avoid thinking of it in any positive way.

No, the best one can do is to make the mental switch to no longer see alcohol as being anything positive. I didn't personally do Leon's course but I did something very similar out of my own motivations, so I very much agree with him.

You aren't a failure just because you relapsed! Relapsing is part of the sobriety process. Stop looking down on yourself! You will quit drinking one day soon, all the ups and downs are part of the journey. As long as relapsing doesn't become a habit, and you learn something along the way, I agree. It shouldn't be an excuse to yourself to drink. Thanks for the inspiring video Leon and keep up the good work!🙌❤👍

@@Lone_Star86 Did you read this part of my comment? "As long as relapsing doesn't become a habit, and you learn something along the way, I agree. It shouldn't be an excuse to yourself to drink." Its okay to relapse because that's part of recovery. You start to learn that if that happens, you can fix it and stop yourself there, instead of rolling further down the hill. Its part of the process learning what does make you relapse so you can prevent it.

    • @JIMKATSANIDIS

@@Lone_Star86 Being alone with one's thoughts for too long can lead to relapse. Also seeing old friends who still use drugs and over-confidence that everything is under control. Relapse is not a sign of failed recovery. It’s an acknowledgement that recovery takes lots of learning. Recovery from addiction requires significant changes in lifestyle and behavior, ranging from changing friend circles to developing new coping mechanisms. You just have to make sure you’re continually trying to get better and not let your relapse push you back down. You can do this.👋

The thought "i will be fine having a drink on this one occasion" has been my biggest downfall.
This time last year i was recovering from major surgery (not brought on by alcohol).
My aim was to get fit and healthy.
I didn't touch a drink for 8 months then in june we got invited to an in laws bbq.
I thought, one time having a drink won't do any harm.
From that day to now i have drank two, three or four times a week.
It was that thought that one time won't do any harm that caused the issue again.

Whenever I see good looking, young, happy people out on a nice night drinking at a bar I always think to myself that I never know their story. I always looked pretty good at the start of the night and it always ended up in a bender. Who knows, maybe those people can have 3 drinks and go home. Most of them most likely are going to be a complete mess by the end of the night, completely hungover the next day. There really are no benefits to drinking at all - they're most likely having fun because they're out with friends, the music is playing, it's a nice night. The alcohol alone isn't making their time better, it's everything else.

I've discovered your channel recently... What a blessing... I've decided to quit like 2 weeks ago, after drinking almost every day (like 5 days in a week, these 2 days without it I only didn't drink, because working late and didn't manage to buy alcohol or had massive hangover) for years, my evenings suddenly felt boring and empty, every day was a struggle, few days ago I told myself, f#ck this, they've pissed me off at work, I deserve it, I get wasted....but after watching 2 of your videos, I didn't buy any alcohol, you've opened my eyes, there are really no benefits from drinking, it's a drug addiction, it doesn't make problems to disappear, with your guidance I feel, I can do it, you cannot imagine how thankful I am for your work Leon👏👍❤️

I still dont know how I relapsed so quickly once. I am sober for half a year now, but the last time was just weird. Basically I was in a restaurant and there were some folks, we were talking a bit, and one of them invited me for a drink (and btw, I was sober for 4-5 months then too). After I drank it I was concious about stopping it then and there, I finished my meal and went home... nothing bad happened for days. Then I drank a pint just because "yeah, I was able to drink just one the other day". And I did it, was proud of myself, so I was like... "okay, if I can stop after one drink, I can stop after too"... yeah, bad dicision. And I dont know the specific time (maybe a week or so) but I started to drink like crazy again. This really is a disgusting drug, and messes with the head and mind. Now I am also afraid to accidently drink alcohol, because that might trigger these events too.
Actually, thats a good question... what if someone drinks something accidently that has alcohol in it without him knowing? Can that unconcously trigger a relapse?

The strangest part is that the people who criticized me for drinking to excess seemed to be the MOST dismissive of my sobriety, and I got zero credit for stopping. The truth is, quitting to please someone else will NEVER last, and your sobriety is a threat to their own selfish excuses for drinking. The only thing to do with relapsing is chalk it up to experience and start again. If you're a problem drinker, you became complacent and started listening to that wee voice in your mind telling you it's ok to have a drink. And it sounds like you've learned from this experience so nothing is wasted. Just don't let your guard down again and keep an eye on your thinking before taking the first drink.

Almost 2 years for me. Basically one day got so tired of waking up feeling like doo doo that I said screw it. January will be 2 years for me. I was doing shots of tequila just about every night. I would wake up with heavy head and slight headache most of the time. Got so sick of that feeling. I think for the most part, at least with me, I just had to be more stubborn than my craving. I can be pretty stubborn sometimes and luckily one of the times is with this. The first couple weeks were the toughest. But after that the craving starts to fade away and it gets easier. Every now and then I do get a small craving but it's pretty easy now to just turn the other way. So for me it wasn't that hard but I can definitely see how it would be very tough for other people.

@jaketaylor-richardson1695 thanks 1 week sober. Seeing counseling and have been taking medication to help with the cravings. Ultimately it's on me to take it day by day

@@stevend7091 small steps mate, i’m coming up 7 months this time but i’ve relapsed multiple times in the past. The guilt and shame is overwhelming. Did you relapse due to losing the job or was that after? Take care anyway man, hope things work out for you 👍

@jaketaylor-richardson1695 Thanks for the encouragement. I lost the job due to a relapse. Learned a lot from this experience. I got comfortable in sobriety when I had it. I realized even one drink will send me down a dark path

@@stevend7091 yeah man, i’ve learned the hard way we just can’t drink, period. I relapsed last time when everything was going well, thought i’d be okay. Think of it as an allergy, if we were allergic to peanuts we wouldn’t eat peanuts yet we think we can drink again? Doesn’t work bud

And more importantly one mind. The damage it can do to that. Just over 2 months for me now and still not fully recovered.

Just took an 18 month break. Added some whiskey to my coffee. Missed that. I’m going to die someday. I’m not going to deprive myself of pleasures here and there.
I’m just not inflicting myself with hangovers, surrounding myself with gluttonous drinking friends, drinking every day, every week, and drinking because it’s a fucking holiday for the holidays sake.
If I feel like having a head change I will. No drunkenness. Thus far it’s working for me. May not work for everyone. Know yourself. Don’t do what I do.

What about the medical side. Where detox can kill me. I lost my job and insurance. Can’t afford a hospital.

I never relapse. Because I never decided to stop 😂. All jokes aside I love drinking but not every day. I respect the daily grind 9-5 and the usual stuff but few times a week when I get the urge I get blacked out drunk after Im done with work.

Drunk driving kills 11,000 a year. Could you be next? Please- drink at home or take a cab to the bar. The life you save just might be your own!

Because sobriety is fuckin boring. The only reason I don't drink is to keep my relationship. Without her my ass would Def be drinking

the scariest thing was when i tried to break into someone’s house. thank God i couldn’t get over the fence, if not they would have probably beaten the shit out of me and called the authorities. after that day i never got wild drunk again. maximum i had after that was 1 beer a day. and i’m taking that to zero.

The body stops craving alcohol during sobriety the mind doesnt necessarily. Its a dangerous time. That's all ill say.
