    Wow! Those good old days! Helen, and Craig and everybody else. There will never be another era like the Sixties again!

  • @1962Rebel
    @1962Rebel  12 лет назад +10

    I agree wholeheartedly. The sixties just kept getting better. At the time you just thought it would never end. This clip kind of typifies that transition period between the end of the fifties and just before the advent of the Beatles and everything that followed from them. The British charts in that short period was dominated by US teen idols such as Bobby Vee and British acts like Craig Douglas who specialised in covers of American hits.

    I was brought up on pop records as a child on the radio and the record player always on. I have a fondness for the late 1950's early 1960's pop music there was so much choice.

    Thank you Mummy for teaching me about great 60's music! I miss you everyday and yesterday was very difficult and then I find your note today asking me to look for Craig Douglas and Rainbows. I was meant to find it only now and listen to this and let it give me the comfort I need! You had great taste!

    It's a shame that we didn't get to hear so many of these songs and artists in the US (New York). Our radio stations were tightly controlled (payola) and they kept all of these great artists off the airways.

      I can even remember when a chapter of the KKK threw hundreds of Beatles records on to a bonfire and set fire to them. That was in 1964 a couple of years after Craig's chart success with Rainbows.

      I've seen the movie before and like you saw it today as well. And like you was really surprised at what a beautiful song, a song new to me, that this song is. Douglas recorded quite a few songs and after hearing this one I did a little searching here and found two more that I thought I might recommend to you. One is called Our Favorite Melodies and the other is Town Crier. I think you will probably enjoy them as well. Also on youtube is another from the film, also posted by 1962Rebel, from the Brook Brothers, Double Trouble, that is also worth another listen.

    @errolflynn451 This was just before the Beatles and the other beat groups stormed the charts and ushered in a new era so that the careers of some really good acts like Craig Douglas ended overnight from 1963. Even top US artists like Bobby Vee struggled and by 1964 they had all but disappeared. Craig specialised in covers of US hits such as 'Only Sixteen', 'A Hundred Pounds of Clay', 'Pretty Blue Eyes', 'When My Little Girl Is Smiling' and Our Favourite Melodies. He was very popular here.

    It's not a well known one, they spelt his name wrong on the 45 and i think the record company withdrew it from sale, anyway it's a brilliant pop song, got to be my fave from Douglas by far.

  • @1962Rebel
    @1962Rebel  12 лет назад

    Yes, I can see where you are coming from. They sang similar types of songs and both singers had that safe/feel good factor and the songs they sang were always melodic and memorable. Helen Shapiro's chart career compared to Craig Douglas was quite short-lived lasting just under two years and unfortunately she didn't get enough exposure in the US.
